We have all heard the expression: “Remember to stop and smell the roses.” But how often do we really take time out of our busy, ___16___ lives to notice the world around us?
A short time ago, I ___17___ an event that showed how being absorbed in my own little world had kept me from realizing the bigger ___18___ around me. I was driving to a business appointment as usual, ___19___ in my mind what I was going to say, when I came to a very busy intersection (十字路口) where the stoplight had just turned red. “All right,” I thought to myself, “I can beat the next light if I ___20___ ahead of the other cars.”
My mind and car were on autopilot, ready to go, ___21___ suddenly my attention was caught by an unforgettable sight. A young couple, both blind, were walking arm-in-arm across this busy intersection ___22___ cars passing by in every direction. I was terrified for them because they probably didn’t know the ___27___ they were in.
But then I saw it happen — a miracle ___28___ before my eyes. Every car came to a simultaneous (同时的) stop. There was not a sound of brakes, not a yell from the drivers. Everything ___29___. In that moment, time seemed to stand still for this ___30___.
Amazed, I looked at the cars around me to be sure that we were all seeing the same thing. Every driver fixed his attention on the couple. Suddenly, a driver ___31___ his head out of his car and shouted: “Turn to your right!” Other people followed. The couple ___32___ their course, trusting their white canes and the calls from the ___33___ citizens. They ___34___ to the other side of the road. Everyone, including me, sighed with ___35___.
What I learned that day still rings true today, for it’s in those small, mindful moments that we find the most beautiful and meaningful parts of life.

Global Summer Camp Stories — Share your experience!
Posted on 1st June, 2026 9:30 am
Lily
If you’re a high school student (9th grade and above) looking for an amazing summer experience that’s both fun and rewarding, let me tell you about EPGY Summer Institutes—run by Stanford University. This three-week program is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I can’t recommend it enough!
What I love most about EPGY is the variety of courses it offers — there’s truly something for everyone, whether you’re into writing, computer programming, math, or even law. There is definitely one for you!
As someone who’s attended this program for two years in a row, I can say that I looked forward to it every summer. My days there followed a nice, balanced routine: after breakfast, we’d head to class. I took Creative Writing and Expository Writing during my two years, and both were incredible in their own way.
In Creative Writing, we wrote poems and short stories and shared our works with our peers, giving each other constructive feedback. We even dove into analyzing short stories by famous authors like Ray Bradbury. Expository Writing was just as great—it gave me the chance to practice writing all kinds of pieces, from memoirs about my own life to persuasive essays and even book reviews.
“All work and no play ???” Don’t worry — EPGY gets it! There are tons of fun activities to choose from, so you’ll never be bored. You can sign up for sports teams like basketball or flag football, or try something more relaxing like yoga or swimming. I even tried jewelry making one day, which was way more fun than I expected!
Now, let’s talk about the application process — you need to fill out an application early, so don’t wait until the last minute! You’ll also need to submit your report cards, unless you’re an international student. Of course, there’s an application fee, but the good news is that EPGY offers scholarships for students who have financial difficulties.
These summer experiences are the most precious memories in my life, because I have learned and grown. They are filled with so much fun, so many new skills, and lifelong friendships.

When you live a long time with trees, they become part of you. So it pained me to cut down the old sugar maple, my mental home.
The tree was old when we moved to the farm 36 years ago — we figured she was about 160, the same age as our farmhouse. She had a personality: not straight and narrow, branches extending this way and that. I felt privileged to live under her for so many years.
But she’d been damaged by heavy rains and then drought. Summers were hotter, winters were not as cold. The forester said climate change likely made her more susceptible to fungus. She wasn’t alone: ash trees were killed by beetles; native dogwoods were dying of fungus; hemlocks were attacked by insects. Woods that were once woods are becoming fields again.
We watched her die slowly. “She’s not doing well,” my husband said. Then one season, her entire left side began to fall — some branches crashing onto the house, bark everywhere. Even the birds left. They knew the branches were no longer safe.
Still, I begged for a little longer — I was too attached to her. My children grew up beside her; animals ran and jumped around her; black bears wandered by; and at night I watched the moon circle above her. She was more than a tree — she was a village.
I wondered what she’d seen in 160 years: horses and buggies, log-house farmers, snowy winters, more birds, insects, and bats (now nearly gone). Darker skies, brighter stars; she watched us dig the pond, modernize the house, and change the land. Like my wrinkles, her roots held the story of years gone by — blessed and painful.
My husband cut her down. But that wasn’t the end. Neighbors urged me to repurpose her, so I turned to Corey Snyder, whose business card reads “Turn it, don’t burn it.” A few months later, Snyder gave me three beautiful honey-colored bowls — one for each of our family members. The most unique one had a “bark inclusion,” a dark brown mushroom-shaped mark from a damaged branch. When I asked how he chose their forms, he said, “I let the wood dictate.” The old maple had spoken.
Now, instead of looking up at her, I hold her in my hands. The smooth, light bowls are her second life. She will stay here, rooted deep in my heart.
41. What does the underlined word “privileged” in Para.2 probably mean?
A. Feared. B. Elegant. C. Fortunate. D. Stressed.
42. What does the author try to tell us in Paras. 3 and 4?
A. The dying process of the old tree and the poor condition of other trees.
B. The warning signals of climate change and their influences on people.
C. The typical origin of the species and their life styles on the old tree.
D. The shortage of trees on the farm and the changes in nearby areas.
43. What can we infer from Paras. 5 and 6?
A. The author had a deep emotional connection with the old sugar maple.
B. The tree was finally turned into a home for the animals living around it.
C. The tree was cut down by the author’s husband and her neighbors.
D. The author promised her children to save the old sugar maple.
44. The old sugar maple was made into three bowls mainly to _____.
A. inspire people to protect the environment by reusing waste
B. express the author’s worries about extreme climate change
C. keep the memories of the tree alive in a new form
D. stop people from destroying the environment
45. What probably is the best title of the passage?
A. Memories on the farm B. Turn It, Don’t Burn It
C. Save trees, save nature D. My old sugar maple

These days, artificial intelligence or AI, is showing up everywhere in our daily life. What sets AI apart from earlier technologies? AI can perform tasks that only humans used to do, and it works at high speed. The current global interest in AI really began in November 2022, when OpenAI released ChatGPT. As the first chatbot of its kind, capable of performing a wide variety of tasks, it quickly captured the public’s imagination and became the fastest-growing app with 100 million users in just two months.
What Is AI?
AI is technology that helps machines do complex tasks that are typically associated with human intelligence, such as learning and problem-solving. When people talk about AI today, they mostly mean generative AI — a type of AI system that can create writing, images, videos and computer code. AI chatbots are powered by large language models trained on huge amounts of language data. They work as pattern-analyzing machines, predicting the next proper words to answer questions. AI can copy human speech, but it does not truly think or have self-awareness like the smart robots in movies.
What Can You Do with AI?
AI has many practical uses. It can organize information, explain difficult ideas simply, and create plans. It can also work with images and videos, helping people solve daily problems. For students, AI is a great creative partner. It can brainstorm ideas, polish homework, improve resumes, and help with study plans. Many people use AI to make weekly schedules, design workout plans, or even create picture books for children.
Tips for Using AI
There is no best AI tool, so you can try different platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. The key to using AI well is giving specific and clear prompts (指令). Avoid asking too broadly. Break big tasks into small steps and provide enough background information. The quality of AI’s answer depends mostly on your request.
What to Watch Out For
AI has clear weaknesses. It may make up false information, so you should not depend on it for health or legal advice. Spending too much time on AI may lead to loneliness and less real‑life communication. There are also privacy risks, because personal information shared with AI may not be safe. In addition, some AI-generated pictures and videos look real and can mislead people.
AI is a tool created by humans. We should use it wisely and properly. AI can become a helpful partner in study and daily life.
46. Why did AI attract worldwide attention rapidly after November 2022?
A. It developed more rapidly.
B. It was used in digital products.
C. It took the place of human beings.
D. A new intelligent chatbot came out.
47. What can we know about AI from Para. 2?
A. It has the same thinking ability as human beings.
B. It owns real consciousness like the robots in films.
C. It works out answers by studying language patterns.
D. It produces language materials for the world on its own.
48. Why does the author explain the use of AI to readers?
A. To show AI is the most advanced technology in the world.
B. To illustrate the practical value of AI in different areas.
C. To prove AI can replace human’s work in daily life.
D. To emphasize the necessity of using AI at school.
49. What is the most important thing when we use AI properly?
A. Trying different AI platforms.
B. Avoiding asking general questions.
C. Offering detailed and clear instructions.
D. Picking the best and most famous AI products.
50. Which of the following is a possible danger of overusing AI?
A. Losing interest in communicating with real people.
B. Making people lack the ability to use computers.
C. Keeping our personal information protected.
D. Leading people toward a brand-new life path.
Imagine this jar is your life.Take the jar and fill it with rocks. Is the jar full? It certainly looks that way, doesn't it? Well, now add some pebbles, smaller than the rocks. Give the jar a shake. The pebbles all fit in the spaces in the jar. Is the jar full now? Again, it does seem so. But...
Now let’s add some sand. Look! We can fit quite a bit of sand in there, can’t we? Surely the jar has to be full now, right? Here’s a cup of tea. Pour it slowly... Look at that. It fits into the jar, too!
Let’s think about this. There’s only one jar: that is the one life you have. It’s a life where you can do anything, if you spend your time well. The rocks are the most important things in your life: your family, your friends, your health, your hopes and dreams. The pebbles? They are the other important things you need to keep your life going: your job, your house, things like that. What about the sand? The sand is all the little things in life, the annoying things that distract you and take up so much of your time if you’re not careful.
What would happen if you put the sand in the jar first? You’d never have room for the pebbles, let alone the rocks. In the same way, if you waste your time worrying about all the small things in life, you’ll never have time for the things that are really important to you. So, concentrate on the important things first. Don’t worry about the small stuff!
And the tea? That’s easy. No matter how busy you are in life, you should always find time to have a cup of tea and a talk with a good friend!
51. What does the jar stand for in the passage? (no more than 3 words)
________________________________________________
52. According to the passage, what do the rocks represent in our life? (no more than 8 words)

53. What does the underlined word “distract” in Para. 3 probably mean? (no more than 8 words)

54. What can we learn from the example of putting sand into the jar first? (no more than 10 words)

55. What do you value most in your life? Please explain.(no more than 25 words)

Each of them had a white cane (拐杖) extended, ___23___ clues to ___24___ them across the intersection.

My thought was quickly___26___ by horror as I noticed that the couple was walking directly toward the middle of the intersection.

根据第二段中“The tree was old when we moved to the farm 36 years ago — we figured she was about 160, the same age as our farmhouse. She had a personality: not straight and narrow, branches extending this way and that. I felt privileged to live under her for so many years.(36年前我们搬到农场时,这棵树已经很老了——我们估计她大约有160岁,和我们农舍的年龄一样大。她有自己的个性:不笔直也不修长规整,枝条向四面八方伸展。我觉得能在她下面生活这么多年是privileged的)”可知,从对老糖枫树的描述中可以感受到作者对它的喜爱,由此推知,老糖枫树庇护作者家多年,作者会觉得这是一种“幸运”。故划线词privileged与“Fortunate”意思相近。
【42题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“But she’d been damaged by heavy rains and then drought. (但她已经遭受了暴雨和随后干旱的损害。夏天更热,冬天不再那么寒冷。林务员说气候变化可能使她更容易受到真菌感染。她并不孤单:白蜡树被甲虫杀死;本土山茱萸因真菌死亡;铁杉受到昆虫侵袭。曾经是森林的地方正在重新变成田野)”以及第四段“We watched her die slowly. “She’s not doing well,” my husband said. Then one season, her entire left side began to fall — some branches crashing onto the house, bark everywhere. Even the birds left. They knew the branches were no longer safe. (我们看着她慢慢死去。“她状况不好,”我丈夫说。后来到了某一季,她整棵树的左侧枝干开始枯落——一些树枝砸到房子上,树皮到处都是。连鸟儿都离开了。它们知道树枝不再安全了)”可知,这两段主要讲述了老树的死亡过程和其他树木的糟糕状况。
【43题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“I was too attached to her. My children grew up beside her; animals ran and jumped around her; black bears wandered by; and at night I watched the moon circle above her. She was more than a tree — she was a village. (我太依恋她了。我的孩子们在她身边长大;动物们在她周围奔跑跳跃;黑熊从旁边走过;夜晚我看着月亮在她上方旋转。她不仅仅是一棵树——她是一个村庄)”和第六段中“Like my wrinkles, her roots held the story of years gone by — blessed and painful. (就像我的皱纹一样,她的根承载着岁月流逝的故事——有福也有苦)”可推知,作者与这棵老糖枫树有着深厚的情感联系。
【44题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The smooth, light bowls are her second life. She will stay here, rooted deep in my heart. (光滑、轻巧的碗是她的第二次生命。她将留在这里,深深扎根于我的心中)”可知,将老树做成三个碗主要是为了以新的形式保留树的记忆。
【45题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段“When you live a long time with trees, they become part of you. So it pained me to cut down the old sugar maple, my mental home. (当你与树木长期生活在一起时,它们会成为你的一部分。所以,砍倒那棵老糖枫树——我精神上的家——让我感到痛苦)”和最后一段中“The smooth, light bowls are her second life. She will stay here, rooted deep in my heart. (光滑、轻巧的碗是她的第二次生命。她将留在这里,深深扎根于我的心中)”可知,文章围绕作者与老糖枫树的故事展开,讲述了它们的相伴、老树的死亡以及老树以碗的形式获得第二次生命的过程。故D项“My old sugar maple (我的老糖枫树)”能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。

Treat Others as You Want to Be Treated — A lesson for life

Treat Others as You Want to Be Treated — A lesson for life
Well goes an old saying: “Do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you.” It teaches us to put ourselves in others’ shoes. If we do not want to get hurt, we should never hurt others.
For example, I once spoke ill of my teammate with my friends after our basketball team lost the match, just to let off steam. Soon my words got back to the teammate, leaving him really upset. I felt terribly embarrassed when facing him. I came to realize how painful I would be if others talked behind my back. I made a sincere apology to him afterwards. Later, we analyzed our shortcomings together and made thorough preparations for upcoming games. We ought to treat others as we wish to be treated, with kindness and respect.
When every student follows this principle, there will be less quarrel and misunderstanding at school, building a harmonious campus. Furthermore, if everyone thinks more about others in society, people will get along more peacefully, creating a warmer and more civilized society.
