Mrs. Smith was a teacher in a middle school. One day, she decided to do an activity with her students. Mrs. Smith told each student to bring along a plastic bag with a few tomatoes in it the next Monday. Each tomato would be given the name of a person who had made them angry.
On Monday, every student brought their bags of tomatoes. Some had two tomatoes. Some had three, while some had up to five. Mrs. Smith then told the students to carry the tomatoes with them in the bag wherever they went for a whole week.
Days passed by, and the students started to talk about the bad smell from the rotten tomatoes. The smell became worse with each passing day, making it hard for them to pay attention to their daily tasks. Those who had five tomatoes were especially unhappy. After one week, the students were glad when the activity finally came to an end. Mrs. Smith asked, “How did you feel while carrying the tomatoes with you for a whole week?” The students started talking about the trouble that it caused them. Then Mrs. Smith said, “This is exactly what it’s like when you don’t let go of what someone has hurt you with. The bad smell of anger will stay around you and you will carry it with you wherever you go. If you cannot live with the smell of rotten tomatoes for just one week, can you imagine what it is like to carry around the bad smell of anger for a lifetime?”
The aim of the activity was to show the students that it is much better to let go of what others have done wrong than to hold onto anger about it all their life.

B. To buy some fresh tomatoes from the supermarket.
C. To collect rotten tomatoes for the activity.

43. Why did the students with five tomatoes feel especially unhappy?
A. They had more names to remember.
B. They had to carry a heavier bag.
C. They had more rotten smells to bear.
D. They had more daily tasks to finish.
44. What do Mrs. Smith’s words mainly focus on?
A. The result of doing something wrong.
B. The importance of letting go of anger.
C. The difficulty of carrying heavy loads.
D. The challenge of managing bad smells.
45. Which of the following will Mrs. Smith probably agree with?
A. Anger solves nothing. B. Anger blinds the wise.

推理判断题。根据第三段中史密斯老师的话“This is exactly what it’s like when you don’t let go of what someone has hurt you with. The bad smell of anger will stay around you and you will carry it with you wherever you go. If you cannot live with the smell of rotten tomatoes for just one week, can you imagine what it is like to carry around the bad smell of anger for a lifetime?(这正是当你不肯放下别人对你造成的伤害时的感受。愤怒的臭味会一直伴随着你,无论你走到哪里,它都会伴随着你。如果你不能忍受腐烂番茄的味道一周,你能想象一辈子都带着愤怒的臭味是什么感觉吗?)”可知,她的话重点强调了放下愤怒的重要性。
【45题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The aim of the activity was to show the students that it is much better to let go of what others have done wrong than to hold onto anger about it all their life.(这次活动的目的是向学生表明,放下别人的过错远比一辈子心怀愤怒要好得多)”可知,怀揣愤怒只会让人痛苦,无法带来内心的平静。D项“Anger brings no peace.(愤怒带不来安宁)”最符合史密斯老师的观点。

If a child has brown hair and blue eyes, it is highly likely that one or both of the child’s parents share those same features. This is because physical appearance is passed down through genes — the biological instructions stored in our cells. But how about other things? If a parent is shy, then would the child also be shy? Scientists want to know how much a person is determined by genes and how much by the way they are raised.
Scientists study this question by observing identical twins (同卵双胞胎). Identical twins are twins that look the same on the outside. They also have the same genes on the inside. By studying twins who were separated at birth and raised in different families, scientists can better understand whether they turn out the same despite having different life experiences. If genes were the only factor, these twins should be identical in every way, even if they grew up thousands of miles apart.
For some things, the answer is yes. The twins turn out to have the same look or disease. Research shows that identical twins often reach similar heights regardless of their diets or lifestyles. Similarly, if one twin is more likely to get a certain disease because of their genes, the other often faces a similar risk, even if one exercises regularly and the other does not. In these cases, how a child is raised seems to have a limited impact on their physical development.
However, as for personality, the answer is not so clear. Some separated twins have completely different personalities and lives as adults. Other separated twins are almost exactly the same. They even have the same jobs, even though they have never met.
In the end, there seems to be no simple answer. As a whole, it seems people become who and what we are because of both genes and how we are raised.
46. What may determine the colors of a child’s hair and eyes?
A. The child’s genes. B. The parents’ education.
C. The child’s date of birth. D. The parents’ health.
47. According to Paragraph 2, how do scientists study the question?
A. By observing identical twins. B. By interviewing twins’ parents.
C. By doing experiments in the lab. D. By discussing with other scientists.
48. According to the study, what can we know about the separated identical twins when they grow up?
A. They never do the same jobs. B. They always have different looks.
C. They probably are of similar heights. D. They seldom get serious diseases.
49. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The data of the study. B. The result of the study.
C. The method of the study. D. The process of the study.
50. Where is the passage probably taken from?
A. A travel guide. B. A popular novel.
C. A science magazine. D. A business report.

第II卷(共35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
In her small home in the capital of Greece, Athens, 93-year-old Joanna has been knitting thousands of brightly colored scarves for children in need across Europe. Despite her advanced age, she has no plans to stop just yet. “It brings me great joy to share them with others,” she says with a gentle smile.
Since she embarked upon knitting in the 1990s, Joanna has easily made over 3,000 scarves. Her house has become a small “factory” of kindness. By the door to her home, bags filled with her latest works wait for their new owners. A knitted blanket is thrown over a large chair where she spends her days knitting. In the beginning, the scarves were gifted to children in her community. As the number of scarves grew, they were donated to children’s homes all over Greece. Eventually, with the help of friends and relatives, they reached children in many other European countries.
“The fact that we give them away gives her strength,” said her daughter Amy. She read one of the letters her mother received over the years: “Thank you. You gave joy to children. You gave joy to people… Be well, and keep going.” That’s what Joanna has got: letters with kind words. Joanna knits only one scarf a day now, because her eyesight suffers and she sometimes has a great pain in her hands. Amy said, “Even so, my mother is always an example of strength and hope.”
Joanna may have discovered the secret to a long and meaningful life. Sitting beside a large blue bag filled with wool, she says, “It’s the happiness of giving.” For Joanna, the wool is more than just material; it is a bridge connecting her heart to the world.

【答案】Dear Chris,
I’m glad to hear from you. You asked about my recent family trip. Let me share it with you.
Last summer holiday, my family visited the Yellow Mountain. Standing on the top and enjoying the sunrise was the most breathtaking moment of my life. However, the trip was not all smooth sailing. While hiking down, it suddenly started to rain, making the path so slippery that we had to walk extremely slowly and carefully.
Seeing my parents holding each other tightly on the slippery stairs, I felt for the first time how important family is. This trip taught me that the most unforgettable journeys often come with both beauty and difficulties.
Yours,
Li Jin

41. What was Mrs. Smith’s instruction to the students?
A. To bring a bag of named tomatoes to class.
B. To buy some fresh tomatoes from the supermarket.
C. To collect rotten tomatoes for the activity.
D. To remember the names of their angry friends.
42. What made students unhappy during the activity?
A. The bad smell. B. The heavy bags. C. The daily task. D. The passing days.
C. Anger leads to shame. D. Anger brings no peace.
