Stay Healthy and Safe: Take Good Care of Ourselves
How do we take care of ourselves? This big question guides us to learn about common illnesses, painful injuries and vital safety rules. Importantly, we should master first-aid skills and use modal verbs to give wise advice to ourselves and others.
Luca, Bruno and Maya are exchange students from India. Unlike locals who often eat out, they try to cook by themselves. One night, careless Jeff turned on the stove to fry peanuts. In a panic, he left the gas on and walked away. Surprisingly, the pan caught fire fast, with bright flames jumping onto his shirt. “No way!” James shouted. Allen was about to get water, but he stopped short—he knew water would make oil fires worse. He quickly grabbed an extinguisher and put out the smoke. Sadly, Jeff’s arm got burnt, and his skin started to bleed. He threw himself onto the floor and rolled to cool the painful bruise.
After the accident, all of them suffered from stress. Some got a sore throat, cough or runny nose; others developed stomachache, headache, toothache or backache. One boy even had a nosebleed and a high fever with flu virus. They visited the dentist and took an X-ray for body tests. The doctor gave them bitter medicine and white pills, and told them to wear masks to stop the virus from spreading. He pressed their stomachs gently and asked about every pain, injury and illness description.
The patient students learned a lot of safety knowledge to protect themselves . Here is the useful advice with should, shouldn’t and could:
1. You should avoid using sharp knives carelessly, or you may cut yourselves. When crossing the road, you shouldn’t stare at screens with high brightness; what’s more, you could set clear screen environment to protect your eyes.
2. If you hurt yourselves or get bruised, you should take a seat and take your temperature first. You could ask for first aid instead of dealing with serious burns alone.
3. You shouldn’t touch burning gas stoves or play with fire. If clothes are on fire, you should roll on the ground to put out flames.
4. From now on, we mustn’t do harmful things to our bodies. Badly polluted smoke will harm our lungs; tight seats may cause backache, and peanut food can make allergic people feel shocked nervously.
Luckily, no one’s wound was the worst. They all took time to recover and promised to be more careful. We must remember: safety and health belong to ourselves. We should watch over one another, learn to clear dangerous surroundings, and always stay calm instead of falling into panic when accidents happen.

Grammar Focus)
语法一:反身代词 ourselves /themselves(4b 核心考点)
1. ...they try to cook by themselves.(对应 4b 第 3、5 题:enjoy themselves /protect themselves)
2. We must remember: safety and health belong to ourselves.(对应单元主题问句 take care of ourselves)
3. you may cut yourselves(课本原句 Don’t cut yourself.
必考搭配:hurt oneself /protect oneself /enjoy oneself /by oneself
语法二:情态动词 should /shouldn’t /could 表建议(4a、4c 核心)
You should avoid using sharp knives carelessly. You should see the dentist.
You shouldn’t stare at screens with high brightness. You shouldn’t eat so much next time.
You could set clear screen environment to protect your eyes. You could eat some soft food for now.
1. stop sb. from doing sth. 做某事 原文:wore masks to stop the virus from spreading
Some got a sore throat; others suffered from flu
4. be about to do 正要做某事;stop short 突然停住(课文 A Cooking Accident 原文短语)
How do we take care of ourselves?
1. 日常健康管理:识别头痛、胃痛、流感等各类病症,掌握测体温、吃药、看牙医等基础护理;
2. 居家安全防护:以课文油锅起火事故为故事主线,还原厨房火灾急救流程,讲解灭火器、不能用水灭油火等安全常识;
3. 科学护眼生活习惯:延伸屏幕亮度、用眼环境等现代青少年健康痛点;
