On January 27, 2026, local time, the twin giant pandas Xiaoxiao and Leilei, which had been living in Japan, left Ueno Zoo in Tokyo and returned to China. This marks the end of an era of exchange. As we all
know, the China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA,中国野生动物保护协会) sent giant pandas Yun Chuan and Xin Bao to the San Diego Zoo in the United States in 2024, which is a symbol of a new 10-year period of international conservation(保护) partnership(合作关系). The CWCA organized experienced caretakers and doctors to go with the pandas to the US. The zoo provided the pandas with a larger and more comfortable living environment. It also formed a team with special skills related(相关的) to panda care, daily nursing, and scientific research.
The cooperation(合作) between the CWCA and the San Diego Zoo dates back to 1996 when Bai Yun and Shi Shi became the first pair of pandas to live in the zoo. Giant pandas Hua Mei, born in 1999, and Mei Sheng, born in 2003, who used to live there, are the result of China-US giant panda research cooperation. Over the past years, the two sides have cooperated and solved many technical problems, including important discoveries in key areas like panda raising.
Since the 1990s, China has cooperated on giant panda conservation with 20 countries. “International cooperation in fields such as disease prevention and control, treatment, and wild training and reintroduction to the wild, has achieved good results. Giant pandas will facilitate communication between people and let people around the world know China better,” said Li, from the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda.
“Scientific and educational outreach(外展服务) also plays a key role in international giant panda exchanges, allowing more people to understand giant pandas, which provides very good support for our efforts to protect wild giant pandas,” Li said.

To save endangered Arctic wolves, the Beijing-based Sinogene Biotechnology Company cooperated with Harbin Polarland on cloning(克隆) the Arctic wolf. As a result, after two years of hard work, the Arctic wolf was cloned successfully. It is the first case of its kind in the world.
Born on June 10, 2022, the wolf, named Maya, is energetic and in very good health. Her donor cell(供体细胞) came from a wild female Arctic wolf from Canada. However, her oocyte(卵母细胞) was from a female dog, and her surrogate mother(代孕母体) was a beagle. The scientist chose a dog as Maya’s surrogate because they are similar in genes(基因), and it’s easier to succeed through cloning technology.
“This is our new try and it has been a development in protecting and producing wild and endangered animals. The birth of Maya is an important thing for the development of cloning technology and is of great value to biodiversity(生物多样性), the protection of wildlife, and the restoration(恢复) of endangered animals in the world,” Mi Jidong, the company’s general manager, said.
Cloning technology is a breeding method different from natural reproduction. Some gave different opinions about the cloned Arctic wolf. Sun Quanhui, a scientist from the World Animal Protection, said that cloning technology is still in the exploratory stage of research. And there are many technical and ethical(伦理) problems that need to be treated properly. Sun believed cloning should be used only for endangered wild animals whose species are dying out or whose captive populations(圈养种群) are very limited.
Maya first lived with her surrogate mother in a lab, and later she was sent to the Harbin Polarland and displayed to the public. Maya had to live by herself in the park at first because she might not be able to fit in with original Arctic wolf groups. However, it is reported that the technology of cloning Arctic wolves has gained strong value in its application.

As a saying goes, “You are what you eat.” This is really true for the giant panda. What pandas eat has a big influence on many different parts of their lives.
11. This is because pandas mostly eat bamboo, which is very poor in nutrition(营养) and difficult to take in. Since 99% of a panda’s food is bamboo, pandas also have really small babies because of their food. Baby pandas are born helpless and tiny. 12. No other mammal’s babies are born so much smaller than their mother or father. But baby pandas also grow quickly. 13.
The black-and-white fur of pandas may help them to hide. Once again, we can look at a panda’s food to help understand the reason. In winter, they can’t change their fur quickly enough to match their background like other animals can. 14.
In the past, pandas lived in and travelled across large places and faced lots of predators(捕食性动物). So, their black-and-white fur was very important for them to stay safe.
15. The main danger to pandas is not from predators, but rather from less bamboo, more human activities and climate change. The good news is that pandas are no longer known as endangered.
A. However, things are a little different today.
B. One-year-old pandas can weigh about 45kg.
C. Pandas are still one of the endangered animals in the world.
D. They are just 140g, about 1/1,000 the size of their mother.
E. For one, pandas have to spend more than half a day eating.
F. So being black and white helps them hide in both the snow and the dark.

Have you ever heard birds singing loudly before sunrise? This natural concert usually s 1 around 4 a.m. and continues for hours. Scientists have found three main r 2 for this behaviour.
First, birds sing to find mates and protect their l 3 areas. Early morning darkness makes it difficult to look for food, so singing becomes their main a 4 . Second, their songs show strength. B 5 singing energetically at dawn, birds prove that they survived the night and would be good partners. Third, morning air h 6 their songs sound clearer. Cooler, drier air carries bird voices better, helping others recognize different birds e 7 .
Some people once thought morning songs travelled f 8 with less wind, but this was proven wrong. Researchers discovered bird songs aren’t louder in the morning, but more regular. Since birds have limited energy, singing when others can hear them works best. The quiet morning e 9 acts like a perfect “music studio” for their performances.
Next time you hear birds singing at dawn, r 10 they’re doing important work—making friends, protecting homes, and showing their best voices to the world!

七、 任务型阅读。(每小题2分,共10分)
Happiness is a feeling that lights up your eyes, makes your steps light and makes you want to sing for no reason. Everyone wants to be happy. But sometimes, a guest comes in without an invitation. It’s unhappiness. Don’t let it get you down. Send it away!
When you are happy, the world feels like a better place. As a saying goes, “When you smile, the world smiles with you; when you cry, you cry alone.” Wearing a smile will make you more charming(迷人的) and help you to win lots of friends. A good mood always gives you hope, which makes problems easier to work out.
No matter how happy you are, it’s normal to feel angry and sad sometimes. Life is full of ups and downs. We can’t change the way life is, but we can do our best to change a bad situation into a good one. To help us do this, it’s good to know some of the factors(因素) that influence happiness.
One of the biggest factors is the social relationship. People who are close to their family and friends are happier than those who don’t have those relationships. Talking and sharing are good ways to relax and build confidence. Knowing someone is there for you will make you braver and more outgoing.
Another factor is work or school. If you enjoy school, even if you have lots of homework or extra classes, you will still feel that your school life is meaningful and happy. But if you hate school, your negative attitude(消极的态度) may cause you to feel bored and upset.
A third factor is your attitude towards life. How do you feel if you fail an exam? Maybe you think it’s unfair because you always study hard and should have got a good mark. You can’t stop blaming(责怪) yourself. Or, maybe you accept it. You go through the paper carefully, find out why you made stupid mistakes, and tell yourself, “Take it easy! I’ll do better next time!” Your attitude makes a big difference.
Do you smile a lot or wear a long face most of the time?
根据短文内容回答问题,每题答案不超过6个词。
1. What will make you more charming?
2. Which are good ways to relax and build confidence?
3. How will you feel about your school life if you enjoy school?
4. How many factors can influence happiness according to the passage?

Have you ever heard birds singing loudly before sunrise? This natural concert usually s 1 around 4 a.m. and continues for hours. Scientists have found three main r 2 for this behaviour.

Wearing a smile.

八、 书面表达。(共10分)
所有生物都是地球的主人,人与动物共享同一家园。学校英语期刊将要举行以“One earth, one home”为题的英语作文竞赛活动,请根据所给提示,用英语写一篇作文。
要点提示:
1. What problems are wild animals facing because of humans?
2. Which season brings the most problems to wild animals and what are they?
3. Why should we protect wild animals and what can we do to protect them as students?
注意:
1. 词数不少于90;2. 须包含全部提示内容,可适当发挥。
One earth, one home
The earth is home to both humans and animals.
But today, wild animals are facing serious problems because of humans and the seasons. Humans cut down forests and hunt animals, destroying cover and even causing some species’ extinction.
Winter is the hardest time because when temperatures drop, animals struggle to find food and shelter, and many weak ones can’t survive the harsh cold.
We must protect wild animals because they keep a balance—every creature has an important role in nature. As students, we can say no to animal products, plant trees and spread protection awareness among peers.
Remember: saving animals is saving ourselves!
