Most people enjoy listening to music. But when you ask your classmates what they like listening to, you are likely to get many different answers. Why do different people have different musical tastes? Do you know about the reasons? What do these differences say about us?
Researchers set out to answer these questions. They surveyed 350,000 people from 50 different countries. Then, they detected some connections between musical tastes and personality. Outgoing people preferred music with a fast rhythm (节奏), such as rap. Country music lovers were shown to be more responsible. The researchers guessed worried people might like either sad music or rhythmic music. But it turned out that these people liked neither. Instead, they preferred loud and powerful music.
The researchers also said that climate might influence people’s musical tastes and personality. People in warmer climate preferred rhythmic music. They were more outgoing. This might be a result of longer daylight hours and warmer evenings. They encouraged people to join in social activities.
Of course, we might not divide people simply by their musical tastes. The study just showed us that people from different cultures are more similar than we think. “People are divided by languages and cultures,” said Dr. David Greenberg, “But if an outgoing person in one part of the world likes the same music as outgoing people elsewhere, then we can say that music is really like a powerful bridge.”

Many students think that learning a new language is very difficult. Now think how difficult it is to learn English when your brain is only the size of a bird’s brain! The following is what some birds can do.
Many different kinds of birds can copy the sounds of language. African grey parrots are the best known for this. Every December in London, the National Cage and Aviary Bird Show tries to find the best “talking” bird in the world. One bird named Prudle stood out among the “talking birds”. She won this prize from 1965 to 1976.
Prudle was taken from her nest in Africa in 1958. She was sold to Iris Frost in England. Prudle knew almost 800 words in English. She was also the oldest bird in the world that lived in a cage. Ms. Frost took care of the bird until Prudle died in 1994. Prudle was 35 years old.
A different kind of bird named Puck was tested in 1993. It turned out that Puck knew more English words than Prudle did. Puck knew more than 1,700 words.
If a bird can do it, anybody can do it.

38. How does the writer develop Paragraph 1?

39. What does the underlined word “they” refer to?

A. Because people from different countries build a bridge to music.
B. Because people from different cultures have different tastes of music.
C. Because people with different personality prefer the same taste of music.
D. Because music is a good way of communication between people with similar personality.
42. What is this passage mainly about?

【答案】例文
Good Manners Make a Better Student
Good manners are important for every student. As a middle school student, we should follow proper manners at school.
When we meet a teacher, we are supposed to greet them politely. A simple “Good morning, teacher” can show our respect. During the class, we must listen to the teacher carefully and avoid talking with classmates. We should also raise our hands first if we want to ask a question or give an answer. It’s impolite to interrupt the teacher or other students.
Good manners can help us build good relationships with teachers and classmates. They can also create a harmonious learning environment for everyone. In short, good manners not only make us better students, but also better people.
