第一节
Dear Mr. Davis,
I am Li Hua, an exchange student from China. I am writing to bring to your attention some issues regarding the locker room in the gym.
Recently, I have noticed that the floors are often wet and slippery, with litter lying around, which poses a safety risk. Additionally, several lockers are old and damaged, making it difficult to store belongings safely.
I sincerely hope that regular cleaning and maintenance can be arranged. Placing “Wet Floor” signs and repairing the lockers would greatly improve the experience for all users. Thank you for your time and understanding.
Yours,
Li Hua

The next morning. I decided to write a letter to my father. Difficult as it was for me, I first apologized for my rude behavior. Sitting at my desk, tears blurred my words as I explained how stressed I was under the heavy load of study and training. I described sleepless nights drowning in textbooks and aching muscles from relentless drills, admitting I feared failing both academically and as his son. Hoping to clear the misunderstandings, I put the letter on his desk before leaving for school. My hands shook — would this help him understand, or deepen the gap between us?
When I returned home that evening, I found my father waiting for me. His eyes were gentle, lacking the anger from yesterday. He walked towards me, holding my letter. “I’m sorry for pushing you too hard” he began, then stopped. Slowly, he reached out and touched my shoulder. We hugged each other tightly, both of us knowing that the gap between us was bridged at that moment. Finally, we agreed I’d take a break from basketball — not quit forever. From that day forward, we learned to communicate openly and respect each other’s choices, which laid a much stronger foundation for our father-son bond.

A
Which book you should read based on your next travel destination
Haruki Murakami’s “1Q84” is a dystopian adventure that’s perfect for the plane ride to Japan.
Famed Japanese author Haruki Murakami creates an alternate 1984 called 1Q84 where nothing feels right and everything is slightly different. Set in Tokyo, Japan, this dystopian, mystery-filled fantasy novel is sure to keep your captivated during your trip.
Bring “One Hundred Years of Solitude” to read in South America.
A significant work of literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s classic follows generations of the Buendia family as they live in their South-American town. Garcia Marquez’s magical realism paired with his lush descriptions makes the book a perfect read for visiting some of the breathtaking sights of South America.
Consider picking up “The Great Gatsby” if you’re going to The Hamptons in New York.
Although the “West Egg” and “East Egg” in the classic novel more greatly resemble the Great-Neck and Port-Washington peninsulas (半岛) on Long Island, F. Scott Fitzgerald is believed to have been inspired by the Hamptons when crafting this book. Set in the Jazz Age, the book’s decadence, hot summers, and longing for past lovers make it a great companion for pool hopping, charcuterie eating, and luxury shopping in The Hamptons.
As you’re travelling around Amsterdam, read “The Fault in Our Stars”.
Previously adapted into a film in 2014, John Green’s story of star-crossed teenagers famously includes a trip to Amsterdam. The Anne Frank House and The Rijksmuseum are two of many major destinations mentioned in the book. Plus, the bench from the film adaptation of this novel has ever become its own tourist spot.
21.If you are into parallel existence and you are full of imagination, which book would you like to pick up?
A.The Fault in Our Stars. B.One Hundred Years of Solitude.
C.1Q84. D.The Great Gatsby.
22.Which one of the followings is NOT true?
A.Generations of the Buentia family live in their South-American town.
B.One Hundred Years of Solitude is a book mainly about sights of South America.
C.“West Egg” and “East Egg” are both place names.
D.The Great Gatsby is written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
23.An excerpt from the book: One might marvel at the insanity (疯狂) of the situation: A mother sends her16-year-old daughter alone with a 17-year old boy out into a foreign city.
According to the introduction mentioned above, which city is probably this foreign city?
A.Tokyo. B.New York. C.Amsterdam. D.Sao Paulo.
根据第一段中“Famed Japanese author Haruki Murakami creates an alternate 1984 called 1Q84 where nothing feels right and everything is slightly different. Set in Tokyo, Japan, this dystopian, mystery-filled fantasy novel is sure to keep your captivated during your trip. (日本著名作家村上春树创造了另一个1984,名为1Q84,在那里一切都感觉不对劲,一切都略有不同。以日本东京为背景,这本反乌托邦、充满神秘的奇幻小说一定会让你在旅途中着迷)”可知,《1Q84》这本书涉及平行存在,充满神秘,因此适合对平行存在感兴趣、充满想象力的读者。故选C项。
22.细节理解题。根据第二段中“A significant work of literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s classic follows generations of the Buendia family as they live in their South-American town. (作为一部重要的文学作品,加布里埃尔·加西亚·马尔克斯的经典作品讲述了布恩迪亚家族几代人在南美小镇上的生活)”和第三段中“Although the “West Egg” and “East Egg” in the classic novel more greatly resemble the Great-Neck and Port-Washington peninsulas (半岛) on Long Island, F. Scott Fitzgerald is believed to have been inspired by the Hamptons when crafting this book. (虽然经典小说中的“West Egg”和“East Egg”更像长岛的大颈和华盛顿港半岛,但人们认为,弗·斯科特·菲茨杰拉德在创作这本书时受到了汉普顿斯的启发)”可知,布恩迪亚家族家族几代人都住在他们的南美小镇上,“West Egg”和“East Egg”都是地名,《了不起的盖茨比》是弗·斯科特·菲茨杰拉德写的,A、C、D与文意相符。根据第二段中“Garcia Marquez’s magical realism paired with his lush descriptions makes the book a perfect read for visiting some of the breathtaking sights of South America. (加西亚·马尔克斯的魔幻现实主义与他丰富的描写相结合,使这本书成为参观南美洲一些令人惊叹的景点的完美读物)”可知,B项“《百年孤独》是一本主要描写南美洲风景的书”与文意不符。故选B项。
23.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Previously adapted into a film in 2014, John Green’s story of star-crossed teenagers famously includes a trip to Amsterdam.

Jessica Matthews is an inventor who uses technology to do social good. Born in the United States to Nigerian parents, Jessica grew up experiencing two different cultures. This unique background inspired her to think about global challenges in new ways.
At just 19 years old, while studying mechanical engineering in college, Jessica and her classmates brainstormed a groundbreaking idea: a soccer ball that could produce electricity. The idea for this invention came during a family trip to the countryside of Nigeria, where she saw firsthand how families struggled without regular electricity. The Soccket Ball, a name combining “soccer” and “socket”, looks like any other soccer ball, but it has a special feature. As you play with it, the ball captures the energy from being kicked and rolled. After a game, this energy can power small devices like LED lights. For many families without regular electricity, this invention can make a big difference.
Despite gaining strong support from global organizations and media attention, the product faced unexpected difficulties after its launch. Many users reported that the balls broke or stopped working within a few months, failing to live up to the promised three years of useful life. The problems led to criticism from users and negative headlines, putting pressure on Uncharted Play, the company Jessica founded. The team openly admitted that they hadn’t expected the equipment to be so damaged by rough play in the country and promised to revise the design with stronger materials and improved internal parts.
Despite these setbacks, Jessica and her team at Uncharted Play continued to work on energy solutions. Their latest invention, a portable jump rope that generates electricity, builds on the Soccket’s success with a more durable, lightweight design. Designed for both children and adults, the jump rope can power small devices like phones or flashlights, expanding the reach of their mission. Jessica’s key goal remains unchanged: to provide clean renewable energy to people around the world, where electricity shortage limits education, health, and economic opportunities. Her journey proves that even simple, fun activities — like playing soccer or jumping rope — can be transformed into powerful tools to address pressing global affairs.
24.What inspired Jessica to invent the Soccket Ball?
A.Her trip to America with her family.
B.Her mechanical engineering studies.
C.Her unique cross-cultural background.
D.The energy shortage problem she noticed.
25.Why did the Soccket Ball disappoint users?
A.It performed with high costs.
B.It didn’t last as long as expected.
C.It can only power small devices.
D.It was uncomfortable to play with.
26.What does Jessica finally hope to achieve?
A.To improve people’s lives through sports and play.
B.To discover more possible tools for power generation.
C.To solve global power shortage with playful solutions.
D.To achieve worldwide market success for her inventions.

We grow up eating the food of our cultures. It becomes a part of who each of us is. Many of us connect food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. When I was sick as a kid, I couldn’t eat rice because I was too weak, so my mother would cook soup and bring it to bed for me. Now, whenever I feel tired or stressed, I remember the soup my mum used to make for me.
Food is an important part of culture. Immigrants (移民) bring the food of their countries with them wherever they go and cooking traditional food is a way of keeping their culture when they move to new places. Many open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. When immigrants sell food in another country, they have to change the original dishes to satisfy a wider range of customers with different tastes and flavour (味道) preferences. Changes to original dishes can create new flavours that still have the cultural significance of the dish.
In China, harmony is an important character in almost every side of life. This is mirrored in Chinese food, where almost every flavour is used in a balanced way creating delicious dishes with flavours that go well together. Additionally, they believe that food not only needs to be nutritious (有营养的) but also needs to look attractive, so they put a lot of effort into beautifying the dishes and making them look colourful.
The food of the United States mirrors its history. The European colonisation (殖民) of the Americas introduced European ingredients (原料) and cooking styles to the US. Later in the 20th century, the arrival of immigrants from many other foreign nations developed a rich variety in food preparation throughout the country.
As the world becomes more globalised, it is easier to have food from different cultures. We should hug our heritage through our culture’s food, but we should also know about other cultures by trying their food.

Dialects are a cultural resource and the collection of ordinary people’s wisdom. They promote the culture of a region. When an area’s dialect dies out, it means the failure of the local culture. Dialects are also an essential material to study the history of a country’s language and its evolution, making up for lack of documents.
According to UNESCO, nearly 7,000 languages and dialects worldwide are facing extinction (消亡), falling out of use at the rate of about one every two weeks. In China, there are over 120 languages at risk of extinction. More than half of them is spoken by fewer than 10,000 people.
Xu Kaifei, a new media journalist who has a 7-year-old son finds that Hainanese is not being spoken by the younger generation: “Children do not use the dialect, and some can’t even understand it.” So, he started to teach his son the language word by word, uploading videos on social media platforms for viewers interested in Hainanese.
Due to education and work, where standard Chinese is used, many young people who spoke dialects have turned to standard Chinese. Some think speaking only a dialect is a barrier to finding jobs in cities, where standard Chinese is widely used. So, they stop using their native tongue. In many families, the parents guide the switch for their children.
To research dialects, Zhao Rixin, a professor studying dialects at the Beijing Language and Culture University, has visited over 100 places, mostly village. “Villages are the best sites as their dialects are well preserved, thanks to the small-scale input of outsiders,” he said. His last survey was done in a village in Chengde, Hebei Province in north China, whose dialect is close to standard Chinese. “The dialects in north and northeast China have been better preserved than in other places”, he said. The dialects of northeast China are popular due to their culture, tradition and economic development. The development of the media and genres (类型) of art has also enhanced people’s pride in this region’s language
32.Why are dialects considered valuable?
A.They are created by both the official and the folks.
B.They are mainly used in formal education systems.
C.They document the development of a country’s language.
D.They have been replaced by written documents in most regions.
33.Why was Xu Kaifei’s son mentioned in-paragraph 3?
A.To show younger generations’ dialect loss. B.To explain how social media spreads dialects.
C.To give an example of a child learning Hainanese. D.To highlight a parent’s effort to save dialect.
34.What does “the switch” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Speaking standard Chinese in big cities. B.Speaking more dialects when finding jobs.
C.Giving up the native tongue for the standard Chinese. D.Taking seriously parents’ advice on language learning.
35.What do Zhao Rixin’s words imply?
A.The northern dialects are popular and easier to understand.
B.Dialects are better preserved in areas with fewer outsiders.
C.Many local dialects are very similar to Standard Chinese.
D.Economic development in the north is faster than that in the south.

In many families, the parents guide the switch for their children.(由于教育和工作中使用标准汉语,许多说方言的年轻人转向了标准汉语。

World Water Day on 22 March is a reminder of the importance of water for people and the planet. 36
Whether you’re splashing in a pool or walking by a river, water connects your senses. At the beach, you can see the waves rolling in, hear them crashing, smell and taste the salty air and feel the cool water on your feet. 37 This can refer to the sea, canals, lakes, rivers and fountains — anywhere that people can enjoy water. Scientists think blue spaces help you relax because, over time, lots of humans have lived near water, so it feels safe and familiar.
Researcher Kate Campbell studies blue spaces and says they have the power to “relax our bodies and tell our minds to switch off”. Even just looking at water can help you feel focused. A study in 2022 found that it made volunteers feel relaxed and slowed their heart rate. 38 Studies show that people often feel happier when they live close to the coast. Water has also been shown to boost creativity, which is why you might get good ideas in the shower or bath.
39 Author Catherine Kelly says relaxing in the bath is good too, or feeling rain on your skin. If you don’t like getting wet, sit indoors by the window and watch raindrops race to the bottom. At the beach you can go for a swim if an adult says it’s safe to do so, or sit on the shore and watch the horizon. 40 Kelly says you can think, “Here I am, this small thing. So my problems are not that big after all.”
A.But did you know it keeps your mind healthy too?
B.Water is important for agriculture and industry worldwide.
C.Watching waves calms mind and rushing water aids sleep.
D.Breathing sea air can also be good for your physical health.
E.You don’t need to live by the sea to feel connected to water.
F.This peaceful feeling near water actually has a name: blue space.
G.Seeing a huge blue space has been shown to help you let go of things.

Tasmania, an island 56 lies about 150 miles off Australia’ s southeast coast, is one of Earth’s most beautiful places. It is roughly the same size as the state of West Virginia, but it is largely untouched — more than 20% of the state 57 (protect) as part of UNESCO’s Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, and just over 40% of the entire island is a national park or reserve.

主语 more than 20% of the state 与 protect 是被动关系,描述客观现状用一般现在时;主语核心为单数概念的 state,因此填一般现在时的被动语态is protected。

Last weekend, my father and I had a heated argument that left both of us deeply hurt. It all began when I gathered the courage to tell him my decision to quit the school basketball team. I found it hard to deal with lots of schoolwork, endless tasks, and the physically-demanding daily training sessions. The pressure was too heavy, and I felt like I was about to break down.
However, my father couldn’t see things from my point of view. In his eyes, the basketball team was a golden opportunity for me to build my strength, character, and teamwork skills. He thought I was being a quitter, giving up easily just because of a little hardship.
Our voices rose higher and higher as we tried to defend our own views. Words that were better left unsaid were thrown back and forth. In the heat of the moment, I even accused him of not caring about my feelings. In the end, I lost my temper, stormed out of the house, and shut the door behind me heavily, leaving my father standing there in a state of shock.
That night, I turned in my bed, the argument replaying in my mind like a broken record. I stared at the ceiling, the moonlight streaming in through the curtains, casting a dim (昏暗的) light in the room. I kept thinking about the disappointed look on my father’s face. I knew he had high hopes for me, always dreaming that I could achieve great things. But at that moment, I just couldn’t take the pressure anymore. I felt so confused and sad, not knowing how to bridge the gap that had suddenly opened between us. I regretted my hasty (草率的) words and wondered if our relationship could ever be the same again.

27.Which of the following words can best describe Jessica?
A.Creative and polite. B.Gifted and selfless.

28.What does the author want to tell us by the soup story?
A.He has a memorable childhood. B.Food reminds him of his family.
C.Food plays an important role in our life. D.He has a great mother good at cooking.
29.What do immigrant restaurants do with their traditional food in new places?
A.Create new dishes from it. B.Change its flavours.
C.Replace it with local food. D.Change its cooking style.
30.What do we know about the Chinese food?
A.It mainly focuses on nutrition. B.It’s time-consuming to prepare.
C.It is influenced by other cultures. D.It stresses nutrition and appearance.
31.Which of the following can best describe the American food style in the 20th century?
A.Rich. B.European. C.Traditional. D.Simple.
D

Haruki Murakami’s “1Q84” is a dystopian adventure that’s perfect for the plane ride to Japan.

Bring “One Hundred Years of Solitude” to read in South America.

25.Why did the Soccket Ball disappoint users?
A.It performed with high costs.
B.It didn’t last as long as expected.
C.It can only power small devices.

26.What does Jessica finally hope to achieve?
A.To improve people’s lives through sports and play.
B.To discover more possible tools for power generation.
C.To solve global power shortage with playful solutions.
D.To achieve worldwide market success for her inventions.
27.Which of the following words can best describe Jessica?
A.Creative and polite. B.Gifted and selfless.

D.Simple.
D
