Research Proposal Submission Guide
All student-led research projects need formal department approval before data collection can begin. This guide explains the procedure and rules for submitting your proposal.
Submission Window
Proposals are only accepted during the fall and spring cycles. The fall cycle runs from September 1st to October 15th, and the spring cycle from February 1st to March 15th. If your documents arrive outside these windows, the system will automatically reject them and they cannot be opened. There are no exceptions.
What a Proposal Must Contain
A complete package must include three separate parts, each of which the review committee will assess independently. First, a project statement that explains your research based on a review of existing studies and describes your method. Second, a timeline with clear, measurable milestones for the project period. Third, a cost breakdown showing that all expected expenses are necessary and reasonable. Packages that are incomplete or in the wrong order will be returned without being evaluated.
File Naming Rules
Every file you upload must follow this naming pattern: Surname_Initials_Component.pdf — for example, Chen_X_ProjectStatement.pdf. A file with a title that does not match this pattern or cannot be recognized will be treated as missing. It is your responsibility to double-check this before you finalize your submission.
Review Standards
The committee uses a standard scoring framework. The four weighted factors are: academic value (40%), soundness of design (30%), achievability (20%), and budget reasonableness (10%). The design score mainly reflects whether your research design is logically consistent. Proposals that rest on unverifiable assumptions or lack a clearly defined, measurable outcome will be scored poorly.
After the Review
Within four weeks of a cycle closing, the committee gives one of three decisions: approved, revisable, or declined. A “revisable” decision is time-sensitive — you have exactly 14 calendar days to upload a revised version that addresses all the committee’s concerns.
1.What happens to a proposal handed in on October 20th?
A.It will be held for the next cycle.
B.It will fail to clear the system’s check.
C.It will be reviewed with a lower priority.
D.It will be given a manual extension.
2.Which of the following aspects carries the least weight in deciding a proposal’s fate?
A.Whether the money asked for makes sense.
B.Whether the goals can be clearly measured.
C.Whether the research design holds together logically.
D.Whether the project is of high academic worth.
3.What must a student do upon receiving a “revisable” decision?
A.Move forward with data collection while fixing the proposal.
B.Reach out to committee members for individual guidance.
C.Beat the clock and get the revised version back in two weeks.
D.Challenge the committee’s concerns through a formal channel.

My first college class was philosophy, and it completely changed the course of my life. Our first assignment was to write an original 1000-word analysis of Albert Camus’ essay The Myth of Sisyphus within a week. The task filled me with deep anxiety. However, through all the confusion in philosophy class, I found answers to my inner questions about life.
I entered college aiming for an engineering degree, drawn to mathematics for its clear right and wrong answers. Facing my first philosophy task, I was confused. What was the correct way to analyze Camus’ essay? The professor offered no guidelines and simply said, “I want to see what you come up with.”
I was used to examples and explanations of solutions, but this assignment offered no references. Burdened with worry, I read Camus’ essay several times and took careful notes. I thought of a million ways to interpret the essay, but which one was my professor looking for? I attempted various strategies — brainstorming, idea mapping, outlining. Eventually, my ideas became well-organized. I submitted my own interpretation of The Myth of Sisyphus.
A week or two later, the professor returned our papers. Surprisingly, I received an A.The professor spoke highly of my original reading and logical thinking. As I went through his written feedback, a wave of relief and newfound confidence washed over me.
What I learned through this process extended well beyond how to write a college paper. I learned to be open to new challenges. This class and assignment gave me the faith, critical thinking skills and courage to explore a new career path. I left engineering, studied law and became a lawyer. More importantly, rather than viewing college as a direct stepping stone to a job, I came to see it as a place to first learn, then pursue a career.
4.Why did the author feel confused about his first philosophy task?
A.He had no passion for philosophy. B.No specific requirements were set.
C.He failed to grasp the essay’s meaning. D.The teacher gave no relevant guidance.
5.How did the author complete his paper?
A.By drawing inspiration from other essays.
B.By abandoning ideas and changing topics.
C.By adopting various thinking approaches.
D.By turning to the professor for assistance.
6.What can be inferred about the author?
A.He had intended to be a lawyer.
B.He regretted quitting engineering.
C.He came to value reasoning skills.
D.He shone in courses with clear-cut answers.
7.What does the author’s experience show?
A.Rome was not built in a day. B.A small key opens big doors.
C.No sweet without sweat. D.Think twice before you act.

Jules Verne is widely regarded as one of the fathers of science fiction. His “Extraordinary Voyages (航海)” series transport readers on grand adventures to the far reaches of Earth and beyond. But Verne did more than just tell entertaining stories — he also predicted over 100 modern-day inventions and technologies in his writings.
For example, in the 1889 short story In the Year 2889, Verne painted a picture of a highly networked world with global multimedia communications. He described the “phonotelephote,” which sent sound and images over great distances. The main character, Fritz Napoleon Smith, is able to easily communicate via this technology with his wife on another continent:
“Mr. Smith was able distinctly to see his wife despite the distance that separated him from her. Mrs. Smith immediately appeared on the telephotic screen, with her features smiling and her eyes moist (潮湿的) with tears.”
Verne’s technically-grounded adventure tales represented a new approach to imagining the future through fiction. Unlike other writers of his day who penned more fanciful or supernatural stories, Verne aimed for realism in his futuristic visions, always basing them on cutting-edge science and his own extensive research. This laid the foundation for the “hard science fiction” of the 20th century and beyond.
Verne is often thought of as a technological optimist, a champion of scientific progress and innovation. But his writings also reveal another perspective. Many of his stories feature a brilliant but mad scientist whose inventions ultimately bring more harm than good. Captain Nemo in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea uses his submarine (潜艇) to violently attack ships. For Verne, human nature determined whether technology would be a force for good or a source of destruction.
The spirit of adventure in Verne’s timeless stories will live on, continuing to inspire generations to push the boundaries of the possible and create the world of tomorrow. That is perhaps the greatest achievement of the extraordinary voyages of Jules Verne.
8.How does Mr. Smith get in touch with his wife?
A.Via a sound-image communication device.
B.By sailing a cross-continental submarine.
C.Through traditional handwritten letters.
D.By driving fast vehicles to visit her.
9.How did Verne’s writing differ from that of other writers at his time?
A.He focused on supernatural events.
B.He preferred fanciful and unrealistic plots.
C.He based his stories on realistic science and research.
D.He only wrote about optimistic futures.
10.What can we infer about Verne from Captain Nemo’s story?
A.He is confident in human nature.
B.He is supportive of scientific advance.
C.He is different from the writers of his time.
D.He is aware of the danger of technology.
11.What is the most suitable description of Jules Verne according to the passage?
A.Sensitive and positive-minded. B.Imaginative and forward-thinking.
C.Creative and strong-willed. D.Adventurous and fantasy-seeking.
D
A newly published report claims “AI-generated poetry is indistinguishable from human-written poetry and is rated more favorably”, which has drawn massive attention to this criticized yet beloved art form. The Washington Post definitively declared that “ChatGPT is a poet”. Others more closely echoed the age-old claims that poetry is dead, or as one publication offered, “Yield, Shakespeare.”
Reports like these are important to investigate as they have practical and potentially serious consequences. They can strengthen what some argue is the art form’s nugacity, which in turn helps fuel arguments that discredit the importance of teaching poetry and supporting passionate poets, as well as nonprofit poetry organizations and publishers dedicated to their work.
The authors of the new report, scientists Brian Porter and Edouard Machery, entered their experiments with the premise (前提) that a poem is something to be solved and poetry, a competition to win.
In the first of the scientists’ two experiments, they directed ChatGPT to produce texts that imitated poems by 10 poets. Participants were assigned a poem and asked to determine the origin of the work: poet or bot. The scientists reveal that the study participants “are non-expert readers of poetry” and “found the task very difficult, and were at least in part answering randomly”.
Their second experiment asked a different, smaller group of participants to review poems authored by poets and ChatGPT texts imitating poems and then assess them based on some characteristics. Participants rated the bot’s texts higher. However, it should be noted that, among the characteristics, only rhyme is a specific and distinct formal element, making it easily recognizable. Rhyme, therefore, as in the previous experiment, could have influenced results favorably in the direction of ChatGPT.
Porter and Machery propose that their participants’ apparent preference for algorithmically-generated texts is because they were “generally more accessible” to those who may not have the time or interest for the in-depth analysis demanded by the poetry of human poets. This reveals a questionable assumption about poetry. It’s true that reading poems takes time. In fact, one of the art form’s benefits is that it slows readers down and invites them to another place for a few moments. But it’s not true that poems sweepingly “demand” “in-depth analysis”.
The scientists’ second experiment also confirmed that participants judged texts more negatively when it was revealed they were actually produced by ChatGPT. They draw the conclusion that this means there is "a mismatch between readers’ expectations and reality". This could instead be something more fundamental: a confirmation of a desire to be led by a human guide, to be able to imagine the hand, to take comfort in another being, to know soul.
12.What is probably the author’s attitude towards the reports mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.Tolerant. B.Humble.
C.Pessimistic. D.Critical.
13.What does the underlined word “nugacity” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Unreliability. B.Insignificance.
C.Contradictoriness. D.Backwardness.
14.As for the experiments, the author thinks that _________.
A.participants’ desire for easy reading affected the result
B.experimenters' capability to judge poems was shown
C.the assessment features weakened the credibility
D.deep analysis of poems should serve as the basis
15.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.The Power of AI’s Words: Can Humans Grasp?
B.Human Poetry: The Last Art in the Age of AI?
C.AI-generated Poetry: A New Renaissance?
D.Voices of the Heart: Can AI Bridge?

There are days when your mind feels like an overflowing inbox (收件箱). 16 Emotions arrive faster than you can name them. You move from task to task, but inside, your inner noise never finds a place to land.
For a long time, I tried to manage this inner noise by thinking harder, planning more or “being positive”. It rarely helped. I didn’t need more thoughts about my thoughts. 17
Only then, almost by accident, I started opening a voice-to-text tool on my phone and talking to narrate my inner life in real time. Later, I read the transcripts (文稿). At first, it was uncomfortable, like overhearing a stranger’s private conversation. 18 I stopped reading as if it were about “me” and started reading as if I were discovering a character in a story. Who is this person? What’s driving them? I call this process Write Yourself Every Day (WYED).
In that small shift, I step out of being the person inside the feeling and become the observing reader — and then the writer who can choose what comes next. 19 I’m no longer stuck in the mood of the moment. I can understand the “character”, notice my blind spots, and decide how the next page might go.
20 While those tools can be useful, they often guide you toward specific interpretations. By contrast, WYED does not. You just need 10 minutes a day, the willingness to tell the truth for a moment, and then the commitment to keep coming back, reading and authoring your story with care.
A.A new kind of space opens.
B.But gradually something shifted.
C.I chose to record my inner feelings.
D.The practice differs from AI journal apps.
E.Thoughts pile up without being answered.
F.It allows you to use tools you already have.
G.I needed somewhere for those thoughts to go.

The Science Of Scratching
Mom knew what she was talking about after all: Scratching really does make the itch worse. Good 36 it feels, the burst of ecstasy (狂喜) you get from clawing your irritated skin only prolongs a vicious itch-scratch cycle, putting true relief 37 (far) out of reach.
But why? Though itch has troubled our species for thousands of years, scientists have just begun to comprehend the physiological mechanisms 38 it. Over the past couple of decades, research has shown 39 scratching taps into our brains’ reward and immune systems, producing a strange mix of sensations that makes it all but impossible to resist.
“You scratch to feel better,” says Brian Kim, a neuroimmunologist at Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine, “but in doing so, you actually activate immune pathways that are counterproductive.”
In 1660, a definition of itch arose that’s still in use today: an unpleasant sensation that provokes the desire to scratch. It results from 40 from insect bites and poisonous plants to allergic reactions and skin conditions like eczema (湿疹).
Until recently, itch was considered a form of mild pain 41 (arise) from the weak activation of pain receptors. This “intensity theory” speculated that itch stood at one end of the pain spectrum, and 42 (transition) all the way to full-blown suffering as a stimulus grew stronger.
But in 2014, Zhou-Feng Chen, an itch researcher then at Washington University, discovered that serotonin (the mood-regulating “happiness hormone”) plays a big role in perpetuating (使永久) the itch-scratch cycle. The research team found that when mice scratch an itch, their brains release a surge of serotonin, resulting in a moment of pure bliss.
These results were consistent with a PLOS One study from the previous year, which showed that scratching activates the brain regions 43 (involve) in the reward circuit, a neural network that floods the body with euphoria-inducing chemicals in response to pleasurable activities and substances. It’s the same system 44 underlies addiction, which isn’t surprising if you’ve ever lost an hour scratching at mosquito bites.
But Kim notes there’s another side to this coin: the longing not to feel pleasure 45 to ease discomfort. “That’s what’s so complex about it,” he says. “There are different levels at which you need to scratch.”

Make Full Use of Our Labor Practice Base
Mr. and Mrs. Lee moved into the apartment next door in early September. At first, we exchanged polite smiles when passing by, but things changed soon. My younger brother, Tom, was crazy about playing the drums. He’d been dreaming of joining the school’s music band and practiced hard every evening right after finishing his homework, usually from 5 pm to 6 pm. He said the loud beats helped him release stress from a day of studying. However, our thin apartment walls turned his practice sessions into a headache for the Lees.
Mrs. Lee worked night shifts at the hospital. She relied on the afternoons to sleep and recharge for the next shift, but the drumbeats would wake her up repeatedly. Mr. Lee, a freelance writer who worked from home, needed complete quiet to focus on his stories, but the constant “boom-boom-boom” would break his train of thought. We didn’t notice their trouble at first; Tom always closed his bedroom door when practicing, and we thought that would reduce the noise enough.
One Tuesday evening, Mr. Lee knocked on our door. His face looked serious, and I could tell he was upset. “I’m sorry to bother you,” he said, “but the drum noise has been making it hard for my wife to rest and me to work. We’ve tried closing the windows, but it still doesn’t help much.” My parents apologized immediately, but Tom felt wronged. He argued that he only practiced for an hour each day and had nowhere else to play. For the next few days, the atmosphere between our two families became awkward. We stopped greeting each other, and the walls seemed to grow thicker.
Deciding to fix the situation, my mom baked a plate of chocolate cookies — Mrs. Lee’s favorite, which we learned from a casual chat before — and asked Tom and me to take them to the Lees.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
When we arrived, Mrs. Lee opened the door with a surprised look.
After a discussion, they agreed on a new schedule for drum practice.

根据原文第二段“He described the “phonotelephote,” which sent sound and images over great distances. (他描绘了一种名为“声像传讯仪”的设备,它可以远距离传输声音和图像。)”以及第三段“Mr. Smith was able distinctly to see his wife despite the distance that separated him from her.(尽管相隔遥远,史密斯先生仍能清晰看见妻子。)”
根据原文第四段“Unlike other writers of his day who penned more fanciful or supernatural stories, Verne aimed for realism in his futuristic visions, always basing them on cutting-edge science and his own extensive research.(与他那个时代其他创作奇幻、超自然故事的作家不同,凡尔纳力求对未来的构想贴合现实,所有构想都以前沿科学和他大量的研究为依据。)”
根据原文第五段“Many of his stories feature a brilliant but mad scientist whose inventions ultimately bring more harm than good. Captain Nemo in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea uses his submarine (潜艇) to violently attack ships.(他许多故事里都有聪慧却疯狂的科学家,他们的发明最终弊大于利。《海底两万里》中的尼摩船长驾驶潜艇暴力袭击船只。)”可知,凡尔纳意识到科技存在潜在危险。
11.推理判断题。根据原文第一段“But Verne did more than just tell entertaining stories — he also predicted over 100 modern-day inventions and technologies in his writings.(但凡尔纳不只是讲述有趣的故事,他还在作品中预言了一百多种现代发明与科技。)”以及末段“The spirit of adventure in Verne’s timeless stories will live on, continuing to inspire generations to push the boundaries of the possible and create the world of tomorrow.(凡尔纳经典故事中的冒险精神永存,不断激励一代代人突破可能性的边界,创造明日世界。)”

根据第一段中“A newly published report claims “AI-generated poetry is indistinguishable from human-written poetry and is rated more favorably”, which has drawn massive attention to this criticized yet beloved art form.(一份最新发布的报告称,“人工智能生成的诗歌与人类创作的诗歌已难以区分,且(AI诗歌)得到的好评更多”,这一说法让这种既饱受争议又备受喜爱的艺术形式引发了广泛关注。)”以及第二段中“Reports like these are important to investigate as they have practical and potentially serious consequences.(像这样的报告值得深入调查,因为它们具有实际的、潜在严重的后果。)”
根据第二段中“They can strengthen what some argue is the art form’s nugacity, which in turn helps fuel arguments that discredit the importance of teaching poetry and supporting passionate poets, as well as nonprofit poetry organizations and publishers dedicated to their work.(这些说法可能会强化某些人所主张诗歌这种艺术形式具有nugacity,它们会加剧某些人认为该艺术形式空洞无物的观点,进而助长贬低诗歌教学重要性、不支持有激情的诗人,以及削弱致力于诗歌事业的非营利组织和出版社公信力的论调。)”
根据第五段中“However, it should be noted that, among the characteristics, only rhyme is a specific and distinct formal element, making it easily recognizable. Rhyme, therefore, as in the previous experiment, could have influenced results favorably in the direction of ChatGPT.(然而,应该注意的是,在这些特征中,只有押韵是一个具体且独特的形式元素,使其容易被识别。
B选项“Human Poetry: The Last Art in the Age of AI?(人类诗歌:AI时代的最后艺术?)”

根据“Good ____ it feels”和后文“only prolongs a vicious itch-scratch cycle”可知,前后为让步关系,as/though引导让步状语从句时需部分倒装,即“Good as/though it feels”。

Our school’s labor practice base has been left idle for a long time, which is a great waste of valuable resources. The fields are overgrown with weeds, and the farming tools are covered with dust.
To make full use of it, I suggest we organize regular gardening activities where students can grow vegetables and flowers. Besides, we could invite biology teachers to give outdoor lessons there, turning the base into a living classroom. Moreover, the produce can be donated to the local community.

47.例文:
When we arrived, Mrs. Lee opened the door with a surprised look. Her tired eyes softened the instant I handed her the cookies and expressed our sincere apology. Tom said sorry again for the disturbance, not knowing how to make up for the trouble. To our surprise, Mr. Lee wore a smile and said to Tom, “We appreciate your kindness and passion for music. You may continue practising at home. How about adjusting the time for your drumming?” Tom agreed without hesitation.
After a discussion, they agreed on a new schedule for drum practice. Tom decided to shift his one-hour practice to 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., a time when Mrs. Lee had woken up from her afternoon rest and Mr. Lee had finished his most intensive writing work. Satisfied with the thoughtful arrangement, the Lees praised Tom for his sincerity and consideration. The awkward atmosphere between the two families disappeared completely. The once annoying drumbeats turned into harmonious music bridging our two families, teaching us that mutual understanding is the best way to settle conflicts.
