第四部分 写作 第一节 参考范文
Dear Steven,
Hope this email finds you well. I'm glad to tell you about elective courses in our high school. We have a rich variety, including art courses like painting, calligraphy and some traditional Chinese courses. As far as I'm concerned, these electives have great effects. What is most impressive is that some students have shown a great passion for art because of the painting elective. Now, I'm quite curious about elective courses in American high schools. Could you share details like course types and selection methods? Looking forward to your reply.
Best regards,
Li Hua

Mrs Moreno was shocked at the sight of Yollie, but she quickly got her sense of humor at work in just seconds. She smiled warmly and said, "Well, my dear, it looks like you've turned into a little black cat tonight! But don't worry, we'll fix this." She took Yollie inside and started to wash the dress, trying to remove the black dye as much as possible. While doing so, she told Yollie a funny story and they both laughed heartily, and Yollie felt a little better about the situation.
From then on, Yollie took the ugly dress with her wherever she went. It became a reminder of her mother's love and her own determination to overcome difficulties. Whenever she faced challenges or setbacks in her medical studies, she would look at the dress and remember that night at the dance. It gave her the strength to keep going and never give up on her dreams. The dress became a symbol of her resilience and perseverance. And as she stood there on her graduation day, she knew that her mother would be proud of her no matter what.

A 16th-century painting, Madonna and Child by Venetian artist Antonio Solario, has become the focus of an international legal battle after resurfacing in Britain. Stolen in 1973 from a museum in Belluno, Italy, the artwork was recovered in Austria alongside other stolen pieces but later acquired by Barbara De Dozsa, a British woman, whose late husband purchased it "in good faith" that year.
De Dozsa refuses to return the painting, citing Britain's Limitation Act 1980, which ensures legal ownership to buyers of stolen goods if purchased innocently and held for over six years. However, Italian authorities and art lawyer Christopher Marinello argue the work remains stolen property. The painting was identified in 2017 when De Dozsa attempted to auction (拍卖) it, drawing special attention from Interpol police and Italian police databases. Due to the delays for some unstoppable reason, Italy missed the deadline to submit legal documents, leading British police to return the painting to De Dozsa in 2020.
Marinello, founder of Art Recovery International, insists the museum keeps legal ownership, stressing that British police clearly denied transferring title to De Dozsa. The Belluno museum's Carlo Cavalli stressed this position again, stating that possession does not equate to ownership.
De Dozsa claims financial burdens to contest the case, including $ 6,000 in legal fees and insurance costs, but Marinello contradicts that the painting's value($60,000-$80,000)and illegal status render it unsellable. British police cited Italy's delayed response as a good reason for releasing the artwork to her.
The case underscores tensions between legal technical details and ethical obligations in art ownership. Solario, active in Italy and possibly England, has works displayed in London's National Gallery, highlighting the cultural significance of reclaiming lost heritage. As legal efforts continue, the dispute remains unresolved, testing international diplomatic manners for recovering stolen art.
( )24. What happened to the painting Madonna and Child?
A. It was sold in 1973. B.It was found in Italy.
B. It was stolen in Austria. D. It was auctioned in 2020.
( )25. What empowers De Dozsa to defend her legal ownership?
A. The painting's high restoration cost.
B. The Limitation Act 1980 in British law.
C. The museum's failure to report the theft timely.
D. Her late husband's preference as an art collector.
( )26. According to Marinello, why can't De Dozsa sell the painting?
A. It remains stolen property under law.
B. Its market value is too low to attract buyers.
C. British police ban any auction of the artwork.
D. The museum has already reclaimed it through legal means.
( )27.What is the best title of the passage?
A. The Challenges of Art Heritage Preservation
B. A Stolen Painting's Recovery Through Europe
C. Ownership Dispute Under Different Legal Systems
D. A legal Battle Over a 16th-Century Stolen Masterpiece

Eating a plant-based diet has been shown to be very good for your heart and your overall health. In fact, a recent study found a young person could live an additional 13 years by eating more vegetables and legumes (豆类),as well as whole grains, fruit and nuts. That makes the findings of a new analysis of the diets of nearly 400,000 UK adults published on Monday in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition rather shocking: Eating veggies, especially cooked ones, doesn't reduce your risk of heart disease over time.
"Our large study did not find evidence for a protective effect of vegetable intake on the occurrence of CVD (cardiovascular disease)," said Qi Feng, an epidemiologist at the University of Oxford, in a statement.
While the study found eating raw veggies could protect against heart disease, cooked vegetables did not. Any benefit went away when researchers factored in lifestyle factors such as physical activity, educational level, smoking, drinking, fruit intake, red and processed meat consumption, and use of mineral and vitamin supplements.
"Instead, our analyses show that the seemingly protective effect of vegetable intake against CVD risk is very likely to be accounted for by bias (偏见)...related to differences in the socioeconomic situation and lifestyle," Feng said.
Don't start celebrating yet, veggie haters. Experts in the UK and the United States quickly took exception to the study's conclusion.
"Although this study found that eating more vegetables wasn't associated with a lower risk of heart and circulatory diseases once other lifestyle and other factors were taken into account, that doesn't mean we should stop eating vegetables,"said Victoria Taylor, a senior dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, in a statement.
"The results are not surprising. Picking out one single component and assuming just adding it to the diet, e. g.,vegetables,is not likely to result in the desired effect,"Alice Lichtenstein, director and senior scientist at Tufts University's Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory, told CNN in an email. "One thing that has become clear over the past decade is that we should not be looking at single foods or nutrients, rather the whole dietary pattern," said Lichtenstein.
( )28. What can we learn from the new study led by Feng?
A. It followed a young UK person for 13 years.
B. Its findings came as no surprise to other people.
C. It overturned the conclusion of previous studies
D. Its purpose was to find the right vegetables for people.
( )29. What did Feng imply about vegetables' protective effect?
A. It was made up by some researchers.
B. It is true despite some different findings.
C. It can be achieved through a healthy lifestyle.
D.It is a misconception caused by other factors.
( )30.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined phrase "took exception to"?
A. Voice objections to. B. Add details to.
C. Display ignorance of. D. Take notice of.
( )31.What did Lichtenstein think of the study?
A. It was groundbreaking. B.It was one-sided.
B. It would cause confusion. D.It needed more evidence.

The possibility of hydrogen-powered flight means greater opportunities for fossil-free travel, and the technological advances to make this happen are moving fast. New studies from Chalmers University of Technology, in Sweden, show that almost all air travel within a 750-mile radius (半径) could be made with hydrogen-powered aircraft by 2045,and with a novel heat exchanger currently in development, this range could be extended even further.
"If everything falls into place, the commercialization of hydrogen flight can go really fast now.As early as 2028,the first commercial hydrogen flights in Sweden could be in the air,"says Tomas Gronstedt, professor at Chalmers University of Technology.
Some of these technological advances can be seen inside the Chalmers wind tunnels, where researchers test airflow conditions in cutting-edge facilities. Here, more energy efficient engines are being developed that pave the way for safe and efficient hydrogen flight for heavy-duty vehicles.
Heat exchangers are a vital part of hydrogen flight, and they are a key part of the technological advances taking place. To keep the fuel systems lightweight, the hydrogen needs to be in liquid form. This means that the hydrogen is kept supercool in the aircraft, typically around-250 degrees Celsius. By recovering heat from the hot exhausts of the jet engines, and by cooling the engines in strategic locations they become more efficient. To transfer the heat between the supercool hydrogen and the engine, novel types of heat exchangers are needed.
To meet this challenge, researchers at Chalmers have been working for several years to develop a completely new type of heat exchanger. The technology takes advantage of hydrogen's low storage temperature to cool engine parts, and then uses waste heat from the exhaust gases to preheat the fuel several hundred degrees before it is injected into the combustion chamber (燃烧室).
( )32. What may be an effect of hydrogen-powered flight mentioned in the text?
A. Making air travel more affordable.
B. Reducing air pollution significantly.
C. Increasing the speed of aircraft sharply.
D. Providing more comfortable flights.
( )33. What is Tomas' attitude towards the future of hydrogen-powered flight?
A. Unfavorable. B.Dismissive. C.Unclear. D.Positive.
( )34. What is the main function of the novel type of heat exchanger?
A. To cool the hydrogen to its liquid state.
B. To release heat from the engines to the air.
C. To increase the efficiency of the jet engines.
D. To help waste heat get into the combustion chamber.
( )35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Key to Hydrogen-Powered Flight: Heat Exchanger Technology
B. The Future of Fossil-Free Travel: Hydrogen-Powered Flight
C. Taking Hydrogen Powered Flight, Overcoming More Challenges
D. Hydrogen-Powered Flight: Ready for Take-off with New Advances

While compliments (赞扬) may seem simple, they can have a large impact on you and the people around you, creating a ripple of positivity. However, giving compliments requires skills and knowledge.
Most compliments in our culture follow a very predictable pattern. 36 About two thirds of compliments in the US are made using just five adjectives, nice, good, beautiful, pretty, and great. In addition, about 80% of compliments follow three formats. So if I liked a book you wrote and wanted to say something positive about it,my compliment would probably follow one of these basic patterns: "Your book is great.""I love your book." or "That is a terrific book."
37 For example,in 2011 a scholar showed that women in unstructured settings both give and receive far more compliments than men. About three quarters of women's compliments to other women in an unstructured, informal setting involve appearance. In a goal-oriented, formal setting,68% of praise statements are about performance.38
Whether the compliment is effective depends on whether it is believable, appropriate, and unqualified. 39 If you tell me my hair looks good. I will dismiss it and suspect your motives, because I have little hair. More generally, people with low self-esteem don't usually receive compliments well. As researchers have shown, in people with high self-esteem, a compliment stimulates parts of the brain responsible for self-referential thinking. This occurs significantly less for people who have low self-esteem.
Even if a compliment agrees with one's self-image, scholars concluded, it must meet three criteria to be accepted by its object.40 It must be sincere. And it must occur in the appropriate context.
A. They must follow the basic patterns.
B. People tend to dismiss praise from those they dislike.
C. The praise must come from a person who is trustworthy.
D. A good compliment must match its receiver's self-image.
E. They typically focus on appearance, abilities, or belongings.
F. What we choose to compliment varies between men and women.
G. Men, however, often praise each other based on skills in any situation.

It was the day Yollie got her graduation certificate of Baylor College of Medicine. Her dream finally came true. She took out an old greyish dress from her suitcase, her mind flooded by memories of the days when her mother saved money for her education.
Yollie's mother, Mrs Moreno, was a woman with a unique sense of humor. As a single mother, she supported the family by working at the local market. She didn't earn much money, but she was always positive and had her own way to provide for Yollie and at the same time saved as much money as possible. Her ways were not always clever ones, though, among which an embarrassing one stood out in Yollie's memory.
Yollie was a smart kid at Saint Theresa's High School. She was the winner of the school's spelling bees. Mrs Moreno encouraged her daughter to study hard, hoping Yollie would realize her dream of becoming a doctor one day. She provided Yollie with a desk, typewriter, and a lamp to protect her eyes from long hours of studying. One day, Yollie needed a new black outfit for the eighth grade fall dance, but unluckily, their old car had already cost them nearly a hundred dollars in repairs. Mrs Moreno didn't have much to spend on the outfit so she decided to buy Yollie a pair of black shoes and fabric dye (染料) to turn her white summer dress black.
At first Yollie doubted her mother's idea. However, to her surprise, the dress turned out shiny and sophisticated after being dyed. She was excited to go to the dance. The dance was romantic, with paper lanterns swinging in the trees and creating a scene straight out of a movie. Yollie enjoyed dancing with her friends under the lanterns until rain began to fall. Disaster struck when Yollie's dyed dress started to leak black dye, ruining her outfit. In embarrassment, she ran home through the storm.
