Celebrate spring days with these brilliant birding breaks in the UK.
Big day birding tours
If you’re short on time but want to increase your bird count, David Leslie’s big day birding tours could be the solution. Do you want to pack as many feathered encounters as possible into one day? There are two tours available in Aberdeenshire, an area with a variety of habitats ranging from mountains and freshwater lakes to beaches and woodland.
Exploring the sky and land
Birding trips don’t always have to be about checklists and binoculars. Many of the areas frequented by bird species also happen to be scenic and often only accessible on foot, making them ideal stops for a walking tour. North Norfolk is the perfect example; trails running through meadows, woodlands, vast sandy beaches, and marsh areas are prime spots for some of the UK’s top birding spectacles (壮观的景象).
Meet the UK’s feathered marvels
Observe both bird and marine life on a wildlife-themed tour based in Dorset at Warmwell House. Naturalists Mike Dilger and Ed Drewitt will guide several excursions, including a trip to Salisbury Plain to learn about a successful project to reintroduce bustards (大鸨).
Follow in the footsteps of Anderson
Dr. James Anderson was amazed by the sight of 150,000 northern gannets (北鲣鸟) gathering at Bass Rock in Scotland. The birds arrive around mid-February and reach their peak in the summer, forming the world’s largest colony of this species. You can witness this gorgeous scene on a guided trip to Northumberland and Scotland, visiting top seabird colonies.

During my summer exchange program in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, I experienced a series of awkward yet enlightening moments caused by cultural differences in body language.
On my first day, my host family greeted me with overwhelming warmth. When the father, Carlos, approached me with a strong embrace and kissed both my cheeks, I instinctively stepped back, my body stiff with surprise. In my culture, such intimate(亲密的)gestures are reserved for close friends or family, not offered to strangers upon first meeting. I noticed a flicker of confusion on his face, which immediately made me regret my reaction.
The following day, I joined some local students at a café. Everyone was friendly, and the conversation flowed. At one point, a girl named Ana described her plan for the weekend and made the “OK” hand gesture, forming a circle with her thumb and index finger. I smiled and returned the same sign, assuming it meant agreement or approval. To my surprise, she looked startled and quickly lowered her hand. Later, a friend gently explained that in Brazil, that particular gesture is considered rude and offensive, similar to raising a middle finger in some other cultures. I felt my face burn with embarrassment.
Another incident happened during a group discussion. I maintained steady eye contact to show that I was attentive and sincere. However, I noticed that my Brazilian counterparts frequently glanced away instead of holding my gaze. It felt as if they were disinterested or distracted. Afterwards, my host sister told me that in her culture, prolonged eye contact, especially in casual conversations, can be perceived(理解)as confrontational or even aggressive. They prefer softer and shorter eye contact to show respect and maintain harmony.
These experiences made me realize how easily nonverbal signals can be misread across cultures. I had assumed that my own habits were universal, but I was unintentionally causing confusion. Since then, I have made an effort to observe and learn the local customs of any country I visit. Understanding body language is just as important as learning the language itself when it comes to truly connecting with people from different backgrounds.
24. How did the author react when the host father greeted him with a hug and a kiss?
A. He responded with the same gesture. B. He stepped back nervously.
C. He shook hands instead. D. He ignored the greeting.
25. Why did the author feel embarrassed after making the “OK” gesture?
A. Because it meant something negative in Brazil.
B. Because he didn’t say thank you.
C. Because the girl didn’t understand him.
D. Because he made the gesture incorrectly.
26. The underlined word “confrontational” in the fourth paragraph most likely means ________.
A. friendly and warm B. likely to cause argument
C. full of respect D. shy and nervous
27. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To introduce Brazilian culture and customs.
B. To explain how to avoid body language mistakes.
C. To describe the author’s unforgettable travel experience.
D. To show the importance of understanding cultural differences in body language.
C
“Only by making good use of China’s cultural heritage can we tell China’s stories better.” This was the key message from a special lecture at Tongji University on March 17, 2026.
The event, part of the “Decoding China” series, invited Shan Jixiang, a well-known expert on cultural heritage and former director of the Palace Museum. He spoke to teachers and students on the topic: “The Power of Culture — Bringing Cultural Heritage to Life.”
Shan began by noting two important anniversaries. “2025 marked 40 years since China joined the World Heritage Convention,” he said. “This year, we also celebrate 40 years since China’s first successful world heritage applications.” He then shared stories behind famous sites such as West Lake in Hangzhou, the Historic Center of Macau, the Grand Canal, and the Beijing Central Axis. According to Shan, China has moved from simply protecting relics to a broader idea of cultural heritage protection.
The Grand Canal project, he noted, took eight years and covered 35 cities across eight provinces. “It was not just a battle to protect heritage, but also a fight to break regional barriers,” Shan said. Today, the canal has become beautiful and lively again.
Shan also talked about his time as the guardian of the Forbidden City. He walked through all 9,371 rooms and opened more than 80% of the palace to the public. “I want to give a magnificent Forbidden City to the next 600 years,” he said. Besides, he introduced the Cultural Relics Hospital, where over 2,000 experts use modern technology to repair and protect artifacts.
The lecture ended with warm applause. Many students said they were deeply moved. “This is not just a cultural feast, but also a lesson on responsibility in passing on our heritage,” said a student from the university. “Shan Jixiang’s journey, taken step by step in his cloth shoes, shows how cultural heritage can be protected, shared and loved by consistent efforts from younger generations. We hope Chinese civilization will shine even brighter in a new age.”
28. What is the genre of this text?
A. A news report on a university event.
B. A scientific paper on cultural heritage.
C. A personal diary about attending a lecture.
D. A historical introduction to the Forbidden City.
29. What is the shift in China’s approach to cultural heritage protection?
A. From opening sites to keeping them closed.
B. From famous sites to only the Forbidden City.
C. From modern technology to traditional methods.
D. From tangible relics to comprehensive heritage protection.
30. What is the symbolic meaning of Shan Jixiang’s “cloth shoes” in the last paragraph?
A. Shan prefers informal clothing for his lectures.
B. Cultural heritage protection requires steady efforts.
C. Traditional clothing is part of China’s cultural heritage.
D. The university should provide better facilities for speakers.
31. What can we infer about Shan’s intention from the underlined sentence?
A. To pass on a well-preserved Forbidden City.
B. To rebuild the Forbidden City every 600 years.
C. The Forbidden City will last only 600 more years.
D. To keep the Forbidden City unchanged for 600 years.
D
Researchers chose 433 participants to evaluate science-related social media posts, some accurate and some false on purpose, covering food safety and disease prevention. Some posts carried a bright red warning: “Attention: The content was detected as being generated by AI.” Others did not. Participants rated how credible(可靠的)each post seemed to them.
When a false health post carried the AI label, participants rated it as more credible than the same false post without it. Accurate posts showed the opposite: The label made them seem less trustworthy. Researchers described this as a “truth-falsity crossover effect”. To understand why, consider how most people actually read social media. Nobody is fact-checking claims while reading. Instead, readers rely on habitual thought processes to decide what feels believable. An AI label appears to function as one of those shortcuts, but not in the way anyone intended.
The researchers suggest one possible explanation. The label may draw on a widespread idea that AI is objective and data-driven. Misinformation, typically written to sound plausible, could benefit from that association. Accurate science posts, which tend to involve qualified claims and layered reasoning, may get hurt by it. A label saying “a machine made this” might signal cold, mechanical precision by chance, even when the content is completely wrong.
Health posts are not simply claims. They are explanations. Readers must trust not just the facts but the reasoning behind them. An AI label may short-circuit that trust in accurate content while lending false authority to misinformation written to sound like settled fact. The researchers proposed one potential fix worth testing: pairing an AI warning label with a second label, something along the lines of a caution that the content has not been independently proven. Rather than letting the AI label carry all the interpretive weight, a two-part reminder might encourage more careful reading across the board. It’s an untested idea, but a logical direction given what the study found.
32. What causes the truth-falsity crossover effect?
A. The AI label’s warning color.
B. Accurate posts’ layered reasoning.
C. Misinformation’s generous tone.
D. Readers’ automatic thinking patterns.
33. What does the underlined word “plausible” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Optional. B. Reasonable. C. Different. D. False.
34. What is the author’s attitude toward the two-label solution proposed by researchers?
A. Doubtful. B. Uninterested. C. Critical. D. Favorable.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Accurate Posts Suffer from AI Labels
B. Doubters Distrust True Labeled Posts
C. AI Labels Can Mislead Public Judgment
D. False Claims Can Profit from AI Labels

Getting to Know the Plants Around Us
Last Sunday witnessed an activity themed "Getting to know the plants around us", which involved all students in Senior One.
The activity began with a lecture where we learned how to identify various plants depending on their characteristics. Following that, we set out to explore the environment and were fascinated by the incredible varieties of plants. Finally, we collected some maple leaves as a reminder of the discovery journey to the plant world.
Apart from getting acquainted with the plants around us, we also gained a greater appreciation for the role that plants play in ecological balance.

M: Hello and good morning! Well, we’re off to a good start in the south this week, as most of the rain from the weekend has disappeared. ⑰It will clear up by lunchtime, though. Over the next day or so, London and the area around Kent can expect a couple of showers, but mostly dry through until Thursday. It’s not such good news for the northwest this week. I’m afraid; more wet weather, and not much sunshine. Some of today’s showers will be heavy, and even thundery in Manchester and across the Pennines. Leeds will escape the thunderstorms, with light rain only throughout the rest of the day and tonight. Elsewhere it becomes dry today, but with some foggy patches towards Wales. ⑱In England, tomorrow morning will see a dry, bright start in most places. We might see one or two thunderstorms appearing as the week goes on, with temperatures everywhere at 29 to 30 degrees. By the weekend, unfortunately, the dry weather will make way for mostly cloudy skies and rain. ⑲The rain will move from Scotland, down towards the north and reach the south coast by Saturday afternoon. ⑳Temperatures, at least, will stay mostly warm at around 21 degrees for the weekend. It might feel like a nice change from the high 20s and early 30s we’ll see in the week. That’s all from me until tomorrow.
