Britain’s Beautiful National Parks Offer Lots to See
Many visitors to the UK go straight to London and never explore outside the capital, which is a pity, for there is a huge variety of landscape only a few hours away, in any one of Britain’s largest areas of protected countryside, its national parks.
The Cairngorms
The biggest is the Cairngorms in northern Scotland, with some of the country’s highest mountains and the best place for skiing. Climbing and fishing are also popular, along with Scotland’s national game, golf. Wildlife enthusiasts are well rewarded, this is the home of the red deer, red squirrel and golden eagle.
The Lake District
Over the border in England is the Lake District, originally made famous by local Romantic poet William Wordsworth two hundred years ago. Crowds of people have been travelling here since 1847 when a railway was built to its biggest lake, Windermere. Children’s writers have found inspiration here too, and the mountains make for excellent walking, with breathtaking views.
Snowdonia
Wales also has its fair share of very impressive landscape. Snowdonia was one of the first national parks to be created in 1951. You will find the road signs in two languages and hear Welsh spoken in the local shops. If mountain climbing is not your thing, try visiting a castle built by a 13th-century prince, or check out the nearby beaches.
The Jurassic Coast
Covering 95 miles of the coastline from East Devon to Dorset, the Jurassic Coast is just as amazing, with rocks recording 185 million years of the earth’s history. The first underwater dinosaur (恐龙) remains were found in the high rocks here in the early 19th century.
The Giant’s Causeway
For the strangest coastal scenery of all, cross the Irish Sea to the Giant’s Causeway. Created 50-60 million years ago, the Giant’s Causeway has been a source of respect, fear and wonder through the ages. So it’s not surprising that all kinds of imaginative stories come from it.

In modern daily life, people fill almost every spare moment with endless short videos and quick online news. Such easy access to fast entertainment has quietly changed people’s reading habits, leaving traditional literary works far less favored than they once were.
Many ordinary people have formed a fixed belief that novels and poems serve little practical purpose, unable to solve real-life troubles or bring immediate benefits. so they choose to stay away from serious reading completely. However, this view is one-sided. Literature is actually an irreplaceable treasure that benefits people greatly in the long run.
When one spends time staying with literary works, they are no longer limited to their own life experience. Between the lines, they can quietly experience the joy and sorrow of characters living in different surroundings and times.
This light emotional experience gradually shapes one’s inner sensitivity, allowing individuals to view life events from more than one angle instead of sticking to their own narrow understanding alone. Such inner growth can hardly be gained from those fast-paced online contents designed only for instant amusement.
People are easily influenced by popular online views which are usually simple and one-sided, leaving little space for personal thought. Literary creation behaves quite differently. It seldom provides definite answers to complex life problems, nor does it force readers to accept fixed opinions. Instead, it presents complicated life situations and inner conflicts, pushing readers to sort out hidden relations, observe human nature, and form their own judgments independently.
Some old literary works have survived hundreds of years and still attract modern readers. Behind their lasting attraction lie the shared human feelings and life puzzles that never change with time. Modern readers may find their own confusion and expectation reflected in those classic lines, feeling closely connected with strangers from distant generations.
It is improper to regard literature as nothing more than a way to kill time. Its value lies in polishing people’s inner world, shaping their way of thinking, and helping them keep a clear mind in the chaos of the noisy flow of modern information.
24. What is the author’s major concern?
A. Fast entertainment is changing people’s spare time.
B. People ignore the long-term value of literary reading.
C. Online opinions limit people’s independent thinking.
D. Modern readers lose interest in short online entertainment.
25. How does literary reading promote people’s inner growth?
A. By improving people’s inner feelings and views of life.
B. By helping readers form independent judgments quickly.
C. By freeing people from various real-life limitations.
D. By offering different new ways to solve personal troubles.
26. Why can classic literary works attract modern readers?
A. They exactly record real historical events.
B. They provide fixed views on human nature.
C. They completely set people free from modern noise.
D. They carry everlasting human feelings and puzzles.
27. What is the author’s attitude towards people’s wrong idea against literature?
A. Fully understanding. B. Strongly disapproving.
C. Completely confused. D. Slightly doubtful.

Seattle’s waterfront has a new look with art celebrating the city’s history and native culture. A key piece is a series of wooden posts inspired by traditional native longhouses, stretching from Columbia to spring streets and towers over plant beds and a new bike path. The artwork is a part of Seattle’s larger waterfront revitalization (翻新) project inspired by the history, ecology and communities of the land on which they stand.
Three of the new artworks were created by native artists, highlighting the importance of native people in Seattle’s history and future. For many years, the waterfront has been crowded with heavy traffic. Now these new changes create a space that invites personal interaction — and allows people to recognize native culture. land and peoples in Seattle’s past and future.
Oscar Tuazon is the lead artist behind the artwork on the waterfront. Though not native himself, Tuazon worked with other native artists. They included house posts carved by local artists, such as Randi Purser. One of the two house posts will complete a family in sculpture (雕像). Tuazon used native trees for the artwork, stressing the connection between traditional native and industrial Seattle architecture. He believed wood represents a process of renewal, much like culture, which develops over time.

A group of clams (河蚌) recently caught people’s attention after an article was posted by China Science Communication online. Although these clams are usually regarded as nothing more than delicious food, they work to monitor the local water quality in Poland.
Gruba Kaska pumping station, which stands in the River Wisla, helps provide millions of liters of water to Warsaw, the Capital of Poland. However, one particular concern for the water quality has been heavy metals, and researchers sought help from nature to solve this problem.
Clams are sensitive (敏感的) to pollutants in their environment as they filter (过滤) water to feed on microorganisms (微生物). They shut their shells immediately after detecting “dangerous” water.
Based on this, the researchers selected eight clams at a time and recorded the natural opening of their shells. After the clam “employees” become used to the local water, they are placed in a specially designed container. With sensors stuck onto their shells, the clams are connected to a system that records how wide the shells are open.
If four or more clams close their shells at the same time, an alarm will be triggered (触发) and the water supply will be shut down. The result is reliable because the creatures are considering many different factors at the same time, according to ZME Science.
Animals have long been helpers for human activities. Farmers in north Queensland, Australia, have been ordering different species of dung beetles (屎壳郎) to help clean up cattle dung, according to ABC News. As the number of cattle grows, their waste increases, leading to an enormous population of flies and a worsening environment. Dung Beetles, however, take the waste and bury it. This way, they help improve soil quality.
Similarly, cockroaches (蟑螂) are used to deal with kitchen waste at several firms in China, according to a report of The Beijing News in 2018. About 300 million cockroaches are fed 15 tons of food waste on a daily basis, and they themselves are a good protein resource for livestock (牲畜).
32. Why did researchers look for help from clams to monitor water quality?
A. They are good at sensing pollutants. B. They can help clear heavy metals.
C. They are inexpensive and easy to find. D. They live on microorganisms.
33. What will happen when four or more clams close their shells at the same time?
A. The clams will be removed from their container.
B. The system recording the clams will break down.
C. The sensors on their shells will be changed.
D. The water supply will be turned off.
34. How do dung beetles help improve soil quality in north Queensland, Australia?
A. By digesting harmful waste. B. By burying cattle dung in the soil.
C. By producing fertilizer (肥料) themselves. D. By controlling the loss of soil nutrients.
35. What can we infer from the text?
A. Cockroaches are harmful to the environment.
B. Dung beetles can solve all environmental problems.
C. Clams are the only animals that can detect water quality.
D. Animals can play a role in solving some human problems.
