Mrs. March read it, then dropped it to the floor, her face white. Jo picked up the telegram and read it to the others in a shocked voice.
Mrs. March,
Your husband is very ill. Come at once.
S. Hale,
Blank Hospital, Washington
The girls and their mother became very sad in a moment.
“I shall go at once,” said Mrs. March, “but it may be too late. Oh, my children!”
For a few minutes, there was only the sound of crying, then Hannah hurried away to get things ready for the long journey.
“Where’s Laurie?” Mrs. March asked.
“Here,” said the boy. “Oh, Mrs. March, let me do something!”
“Send a telegram and say that I’ll come at once,” said Mrs. March. “The next train goes early in the morning. Now, I must write a note to Aunt March. Jo, give me that pen and paper.”
Jo knew that her family must borrow the money for the journey from Aunt March, and she also wanted to do something to help her father.
Later, Laurie came back with a letter and money from Aunt March, but Jo did not come back.
It was late afternoon when Jo came walking in and gave her mother some money.
“That’s to help make Father comfortable and to bring him home,” she said.
“Twenty-five dollars!” said Mrs. March. “My dear, where did you get it?”
Jo took off her hat.
“Jo, how could you…?” cried Meg.
“My dear girl, there was no need for this,” said Mrs. March.
“She doesn’t look like my Jo, but I love her dearly for doing it!” said Beth, and began to cry.
“Don’t cry, Beth,” said Jo. “I’ll soon have curly hair again, which will be short and easy to keep tidy.”
But later, when Amy and Beth were asleep, Meg lay in bed and heard Jo crying.

“Go on outside and practice for a while. You’ll get the hang (诀窍) of it finally. It’s great exercise! My mother said it would help you to grow strong.” said Martha.
Mary put on her coat and hat, and went out right away with the jump-rope. She skipped (跳) all around the gardens for quite a while. Even the gardener was surprised and pleased.
“Look there, the robin (知更鸟) is even more interested in you now,” he said. “He’s never seen a rope like that!”
Mary skipped on, always reaching twenty, and then having to start over again. Then she noticed that the robin had followed her, and was singing to her from a tree branch. As she jumped, she remembered the key in her pocket.
“You helped me find this key. Why don’t you help me find the door, too?” she said to the robin.
The bird then flew to the top of the garden wall, and sang a very pretty song, as if it wanted to show how well it could sing. Just then, a strong wind blew through the garden path (小路) and made some ivy (常春藤) on the wall move. For a moment, Mary had seen something shiny (光亮的) behind the moving ivy. She touched a doorknob (门把手) . And under the doorknob was a keyhole.
Quickly, Mary took out the key, and found that it fit perfectly in the hole. She had to use both hands to turn it, and she soon felt a click. Looking both ways down the path to make sure no one could see her, she then slowly pushed the door open.
She was now inside the secret garden!

Table manners are very different in every country. For example, when you are in England, you must not lift your soup plate to your mouth. This is very impolite. But when you are in Japan, this is completely normal. Lifting your plate to your mouth in Japan is a traditional way of drinking soup. And also in Japan you don’t have to worry about making a noise when you drink it. It just shows that you really like the food! But it is not the same in Britain, so you shouldn’t make a noise when eating there.
In Britain, people don’t put their hands or arms on the table during the meal. But in Mexico, guests keep their hands on the table all the time. In fact, you should watch what your hands do very carefully. In Arab countries, it is impolite when you eat with your left hand, so don’t do it!
In Ukraine you should not start eating first; you should wait for all the others to start eating with you. You also have to say “please” and “thank you” every time you ask for and get something. If you don’t like some food, don’t make faces and don’t say: “Yuk! I hate that!”
In all the cultures it is impolite to speak when you are eating. The best way to avoid making mistakes in other countries is to watch the host and try to do as he does.

根据后文“So she stopped her car”,明确她当时在驾驶车辆,应选driving,意思是“驾驶”。 riding(骑行)、walking(步行)、running(跑步)均与“停车”的动作逻辑不符。
of、at、in均无法构成该固定表达。
air(空气)、water(水)、blood(血)均不符合火灾场景。

“Send a telegram and say that I’ll come at once,” said Mrs. March. “The next train goes early in the morning. Now, I must write a note to Aunt March. Jo, give me that pen and paper.”

“Wow, do you think I’ll be able to do it as well as you some day?” asked Mary.
