It all started two years ago. Emma’s mother wanted to throw away a pair of old white shoes. “Don’t throw them away!” Emma said. “Let me try something.” She took out her paints and started to draw flowers on the shoes. When she finished, the shoes looked beautiful and new. Her mother loved them so much that she wore them to work the next day.
Since then, Emma has painted over 50 pairs of shoes. She paints all kinds of things—animals, cartoon characters, and beautiful scenery. Her friends and family all want her to paint their shoes. Some people even pay her to paint their shoes!
“Painting shoes is really fun,” Emma says. “I can make something old become new again. It’s good for the environment too. We don’t need to throw away old shoes anymore.”

If you put two bottles of water—one hot and the other cold in a fridge, which will freeze quicker? The cold water, right? But in fact, the hot water most probably freezes first. Strange, isn’t it? Scientists call it the Mpemba effect (姆潘巴效应).
Once Erasto Mpemba, a schoolboy, was making ice cream in a cooking class. He was surprised to find that a heated mix froze more quickly than a cold one. He wondered why this happened. When Osborne, a university scientist, came to the school, he asked him about it. Osborne took it seriously. He suggested that they work together to find out why. They tested many times by using water with temperatures from 25℃ to 90℃, and found that the higher the water temperature was, the less time it took the water to freeze. It means water at 25℃ takes the longest time to freeze and water at 90℃ takes the shortest.
What causes this effect? Some scientists think that the gas leaves water as water heats up, which makes it freeze quicker. Other scientists think differently. They say water in a bottle keeps moving, with hot water rising and cold water going down. This convection is stronger in the hotter bottle, which makes hot water lose heat faster than cold water.
Last winter, the Mpemba effect became popular online. Many people went to Harbin and threw hot water into the freezing air. The hot water would turn to ice at once, allowing people to enjoy the beautiful ice mist in the air. People took videos of this process and put them on the Internet.
11. What is the Mpemba effect?
A. A study plan. B. A test result.
C. A scientific finding. D. A natural guess.
12. Which of the following can show Mpemba and Osborne’s discovery?
A. B. C. D.
13. What does the underlined word “convection” mean?
A. The wind in the fridge. B. The force from the outside.
C. The movement of heat in water. D. The weight of the water bottle.
14. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. People in Harbin created beautiful ice mist with hot water.
B. The Mpemba effect got great popularity online last winter.
C. Many people travelled to Harbin to try the Mpemba effect.
D. More and more people begin to study the cause of the Mpemba effect.
15. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage? (①=paragraph 1)
A. ①/②/③④ B. ①②③/④ C. ①②/③④ D. ①/②③/④
【答案】11. C 12. A 13. C 14. B 15. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了姆潘巴效应的发现过程、科学解释以及它在网络上走红的现象。
【11题详解】

【13题详解】
第三段提到“water in a bottle keeps moving, with hot water rising and cold water going down”,这种水内部冷热循环的现象就是对流,因此“convection”指的是水内部热量的传递运动。
