As they got close to a big turn, Jackie realized he couldn’t win this way. He drove his car to the side and helped Jimmy come to a safe stop.
Jimmy thanked Jackie for his help. Then, Jackie told him everything about the wheel. It was not easy for Jackie to say sorry, but he did. Luckily, Jimmy forgave (原谅) him.

Minor Cold (小寒) is the 23rd of the 24 solar terms (节气) in a year and the fifth one in winter. It comes between January 6th and 7th. During this time, people notice three special natural signs Each sign lasts about five days, and together they are called the “Three Signs of Minor Cold (小寒三候)”.
First Sign: Wild Geese Head North
Wild geese start to move north during Minor Cold. At that time, the north is still frozen with ice. But the wild geese in the south can feel small changes in nature. They know spring in the north is coming soon. They eat more to store energy, stay close together, and prepare for their long trip.
Second Sign: Magpies Build Their Nests
It takes magpies one to two months to build their nests. If they start during Minor Cold, the nests will be ready just in time for spring. In Chinese culture, the magpie is a lucky bird. Seeing magpies build nests also holds people's wishes for a happy life.
Third Sign: Pheasants(野鸡) Start to Call
In the last five days of Minor Cold, the male (雄性的) pheasant starts to call. People believe this is a special sign. It means spring's energy is returning. They call the pheasant a“bird of the sun”.
Minor Cold is a cold solar term, but these natural signs all show that spring is not far away.
9. How long do the three signs of Minor Cold last in total?
A. About 5 days. B. About 7 days. C. About 15 days. D. About 23 days.
10. What does the underlined word “store” mean in Paragraph 2?

第一段提到“Each sign lasts about five days”以及文中提到“First Sign、Second Sign、Third Sign”,每这说明个物候现象持续约五天,有三个物候,三者总时长约为3乘以5等于15天。
第二段提到“They eat more to store energy, stay close together, and prepare for their long trip.”,这说明大雁多吃是为了“储存”能量以备后用。

Have you ever stopped to think about what other people around the world are doing at this very moment? There are 24 time zones on Earth. When it is daytime in one country, it could be the middle of the night in another. Let’s take a journey across the world and see how people are living their lives right now.
Beijing, China 8:00 pm
It’s Friday evening, and Li Wei, a 13-year-old student, is enjoying hot pot with his family. As his mother is putting some beef into the pot, his father is telling a funny story about his day. Li Wei’s little sister is trying to catch a meatball but it keeps dropping. Everyone laughs.
London, the UK 12:00 pm
At the same moment, it’s midday in London. Emma, a 32-year-old engineer (工程师), is having lunch with her friend in a small park near her office. She is eating a sandwich and having a cup of tea. Her friend Jenny is excitedly telling her about her coming trip to Scotland. All around them, office workers are making the most of their break — some are reading books on the grass, while others are chatting on their phones.
Sydney, Australia 10:00 pm
On the other side of the world, it’s already nighttime. Chloe, a 22-year-old university (大学) student, is studying in her dorm (宿舍). She has a big exam tomorrow. Her desk is covered with books and notes. She feels tired, but she takes a deep breath (呼吸) and keeps on reading.
At this very moment, people all over the world are doing different things. But one thing connects (连接) us all: we are all here, on this same planet (行星), living our lives — each in our own time, each in our own way.
13. What is Li Wei’s dinner like?
A. It is quiet and perfect. B. It is quick and awful.
C. It is noisy and terrible. D. It is warm and full of fun.
14. What is Emma doing in London when it’s 8:00 pm in Beijing?
A. She is reading books on the grass. B. She is having lunch with her friend.
C. She is telling her friend about her trip. D. She is enjoying hot pot with her family.
15. Why does Chloe take a deep breath at night in Sydney?
A. The room is too hot for her to read. B. She finishes all her notes and wants to sleep.
C. She feels tired but keeps on studying. D. She is afraid of the coming exam and cries.
16. What does the writer want to show in the last paragraph?
A. Different customs make us different. B. Different places share the same Earth.
C. People should live in the same time zone. D. Different people live in different planets.
D 14. B 15. C 16. B
根据第二段“Li Wei... is enjoying hot pot with his family... his father is telling a funny story...
根据第三段“Emma... is having lunch with her friend in a small park near her office.”,可知当北京时间晚上8点时,伦敦正值中午,Emma正在和她的朋友一起吃午餐。
根据第四段“She feels tired, but she takes a deep breath and keeps on reading.”,可知Chloe深呼吸是因为虽然感到疲惫,但仍然要继续学习。

根据前文“They were not in a hurry”(他们不着急),可知他们走路的速度应该是慢的。
后文儿子说“Can I ride the donkey?”,提出骑驴的请求,且前文提到“a long way from here to the village”(离村子还有很远的路),可知儿子感到有点累,tired意为“疲倦的”符合题意。

“You have a donkey, but you both walk”带有贬义和嘲讽,表示“有驴不骑反而走路”的行为不明智。
前文父亲说“we can’t make everyone happy”(我们无法让所有人都满意),后文“and do it”表示选定正确的事并付诸行动。
