I was at a new school in a new state and
needed something solid to stand on:a place to
feel grounded.I also needed to do laundry,so I
walked to a nearby self-service laundry and
stuffed a machine with my clothes.As I
struggled to close the washer door, the woman
working behind the counter told me to give it a
good hit with my hand. The washer did its job,
yet even after an hour, the dryer seemed to have
barely warmed my clothes.I left, having decided
to air-dry them on my car in the August heat.
A month later,I learned her name was
Sandy, which she told me after I'd helped her
stop a washing machine from moving across the
floor.I was grading poems at a table when one of
the washers broke loose and skipped an inch into
the air.I jumped to the machine and held on

while she unplugged it.The next week,Sandy
told me dryer No.8 was the fastest.
It went on like this.I'd do laundry once a
week,usually Thursday or Friday.Sandy
worked Tuesday through Saturday and we'd talk
small while I folded clothes. She told me about
her son and his grades,as well as the new dog
they'd just adopted.She was fascinated that I
was studying poetry..She teased(开玩笑)that it
was harder making a living as a poet than as a
laundry attendant.Even then I knew she was
probably right.
I began to recognize others there:workers
taking breaks by the door,a mother and her
baby, and even some delivery drivers. But Sandy
was the center of my community. For nearly
three years and almost every week,I'd do
laundry and talk with her.We checked on each
other, expecting the other to be there. We asked
where the other had gone when we missed a
week. There was a note of concern for the
other's absence,a note of joy at their return.
I'd found a place to stand on solid ground.

Popularly known as the environmentalist
and founder of the international tree-plant,Felix
Finkbeiner is only 25 years old but he has been
urgently at work for over a decade.
In 2006,Finkbeiner was asked to give a
presentation on climate change in his class.
Inspired by Nobel Prize winner Wangari
Maathai, who led an effort to plant 30 million
trees,Felix spoke about deforestation and its
effect on the planet. At the end of his talk,he
followed with his own fearless idea that a million
trees should be planted in each country to fight
climate change. He challenged his classmates to
help him.One year later, the project named
"Plant-for-the-Planet"was born.It wasn't long
before his fearless dream was realized.
When he was just 13,he was invited to
speak at a United Nations conference and made
the call for others to join him."We cannot trust
that adults alone will save our future,"he said in
the speech."We have to take our future in our
own hands.”
Finkbeiner is now in his twenties, and
Plant-for-the-Planet is an organization with
around 70,000 members. It works to teach
people about climate change and to encourage the
planting of more trees.Finkbeiner has taken over
the United Nations'Billion Tree Programme,
planning to plant another trillion trees instead.
Finkbeiner continues to give talks on climate
change to world leaders."I don't think we can
give up on this generation of adults,"he says,
"and wait 20 or 30 years for our generations to
come to power. We don't have that time. All we
can do is to push present world leaders in the
right direction.”

Many of us suffer(受苦)needlessly when it
comes to our well-being or physical health.
That's because we don't know how to keep a
healthy lifestyle. If we learn how to keep
healthy, our lives would be so much more
enjoyable.
With so many places to find a fast meal,it is
hard to keep control of your eating habits. We do
need food to provide the energy for our bodies

we are attacked with endless quick meals.
However,we must give our body what it needs
to get healthy and not what our taste buds
蕾)want.
The other key to keeping healthy is
exercise.You don't have to be a gym rat,but you
must develop some type of workout. It can be
something as little as walking.Exercising just 30
minutes of your day is all you really need if you
want to stay healthy. You can do as little as 3 to
4 days a week.
Our bodies are not strong enough to deal
with endless stress.Endless stress can lead to a
rise in blood pressure which increases your
chance for a stroke(中风)or a heart attack.It
also influences the blood cells(细胞)that help
fight infections. These weak cells leave you
helpless against common colds,other illnesses,
and medical conditions.Therefore,you should
learn to relax yourself by spending some time
every day chatting with your family, playing
with your friends or just watching a film or
listening to some soft music.
There is no big secret on how to keep
healthy. If you take care of your body,it will do
the same for you in return. It is best that you take
every possible measure to lead a healthy
lifestyle.Keep healthy by treating your body
right.
12.Why do many people eat fast food according
to the text?
A.It is good for our health.
B.The price is very low.

I am extremely pleased to learn that you intend to
engage in volunteer activities during your summer
vacation. This is an exceptionally noble and rewarding
decision.
Both the local community library assistance and the
beach clean-up project organized by the environmental
organization are outstanding options, each possessing its
own unique advantages. The library option allows you to
interact with various people, help with book arrangement
and run reading clubs, improving your communication
with others.Plus, you can immerse yourself in books. The
beach clean-up project,on the contrary,lets you work
outdoors, protect the environment and learn about
ecosystems.
If you prefer indoor,book-related work,go for the
library. If you love nature and hands-on work, choose the
beach clean-up.No matter which one you choose,I'm sure
you'll have a great time!

第二节
One possible version:
But no one was willing to leave. We immediately took
quick action to begin the rescue. We first encouraged her
to keep calm and build up confidence. We gently removed
the blocks one by one. Then we gently lifted her out.She
was bleeding from several injuries in her body.During our
rescue, there were several small earthquakes occurring
and the building shook violently.Without delay,we
wheeled her to the treatment room and treated her
wounds as quickly as possible. Then we took her
downstairs to safety.
My next task was to settle and care for the sick on
the ground.I was relieved that the patients and the
doctors and nurses had safely escaped from the building.
However, because the patients were too weak to stand for
long periods of time,I went back to the sickroom to get
some quilts and spread them on the grass for the patients
to rest on them.I then helped rescue workers set up tents
and create a rescue center, and thus the patients recovered
their normal treatment.
