第一节 阅读下列短文,从A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。(每小题1.5分,共15分)

What I always loved most about middle school was that it was separate(分开的) and different from home. I could go there and be Olivia Pullman—not Via, which is my name at home. Via was what they called me in primary school, too. Back then, everyone knew all about us, my parents and August.
But in middle school, a lot of people didn’t know about August. My old friends did, of course, but my new friends didn’t. Or if they knew, it surely wasn’t the first thing they knew about me. “Olivia? Yeah, she’s nice. Did you hear she has a brother who’s deformed(畸形的)?” I always ▲ the word, but I knew it was how people described(描述) August. And I knew those kinds of conversations probably happened all the time, every time I left the room at a party, or ran into groups of friends at the pizza place. And that’s okay. I’m always going to be the sister of a kid with a birth defect(缺陷): that’s not the problem. I just don’t want others to define me that way.
The best thing about high school is that hardly anybody knows me at all, except Miranda and Ella. And they know not to go around talking about it. Miranda, Ella and I have known each other since the first grade. What’s so nice is that we never have to explain(解释) things to one another. When I decided I wanted them to call me Olivia instead of Via, they got it without my having to explain.
Throughout middle school, Miranda, Ella and I were pretty much our own little group. I don’t know whether the three of us found each other because we were so alike in so many ways, or whether we’ve become so alike in so many ways because we found each other. We were so happy when we all got into Faulkner High School, especially when almost no one else from our middle school did.
This is why I haven’t understood what’s been going on with us lately, now that we’re in high school. It’s nothing like how I thought it would be.

The Classical Gardens of Suzhou, which are also called Suzhou Gardens, are a group of beautiful gardens located in the city of Suzhou in Jiangsu Province. The first classical Suzhou garden was created during the Spring and Autumn Period in the 6th century BC. More gardens were built in the following centuries and most of them were private gardens of scholars(学者) and officials. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the construction(建设) of the gardens reached its peak because of the prosperity(繁荣) of Suzhou in that period. It is said that there were more than 200 gardens all over the city and that Suzhou was famous as the “paradise on earth” and the “City of Gardens”.
Nowadays, 97 well-protected gardens are open to the public as tourist attractions. Among them, some famous gardens are regarded as typical examples of Suzhou Gardens, such as the Humble Administrator’s Garden, the Lingering Garden, the Master of the Nets Garden and so on.
Suzhou Gardens in many ways explain the ideas behind classical Chinese garden design. Their owners were not just interested in having a pleasing arrangement(安排) of plants and flowers: they used history, philosophy, art and architecture(建筑学) in their designs. Each element(要素) of a classical Chinese garden—each hill, pond, plant and rock—is filled with meaning. Although every element was carefully designed, the end goal was always to have a garden which looked like it was created by nature, without the help of human hands.
Suzhou Gardens show the development of Chinese garden design over more than two thousand years. They are national 5A tourist attractions in China and 9 of them have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

A DIY bookmark for my favourite book
Last week I took part in our school’s Reading & Bookmark-making activity. Its purpose was to help us enjoy reading our favourite book. My favourite book is the classic novel Journey to the West, one of the Four Great Classical Novels. I like Monkey King best because he helps the weak and never gives up.
In order to make a bookmark, I prepared a card, scissors, glue and so on. First, I cut the card into long strips. And then I drew a picture of a monkey on the left and wrote down a famous saying “Nothing is impossible if you put your heart into it.” on the right to encourage me not to give up when facing difficulties. At last, I glued it to a thin piece of wood.
Although I met with some difficulties in this process, I never gave up and I am proud of myself.
