About five years ago, I was waiting for my flight at the airport in London. A young boy, maybe seven years old, sat alone by the window, staring at the runway with tears in his eyes. His hands were tightly holding an old, worn-out soccer ball.
I walked over and sat down beside him. His name was Leo. He told me he was flying to Manchester with his mother to try out for a youth soccer team, but they had missed their connecting flight. His mother was at the service desk, trying to find another way, but every flight looked full.
Leo loved soccer more than anything. He practiced every morning before school, even when it was cold or rainy. He told me he had been saving his pocket money for months just to buy new soccer shoes for the tryout. But his family didn’t have much money, and this tryout was his only chance to join a team that offered training scholarships.
I happened to have a soccer magazine with me. I gave it to Leo. His eyes gleamed with excitement when he saw the poster of a famous player inside. Then I took out my phone and started searching for other flights to Manchester. After about an hour, I finally found two seats on a later flight.
Leo’s mother came back from the service desk, looking tired and disappointed. When I told her about the tickets, she almost cried. Leo hugged me quickly before they ran toward the gate.
Six months later, a photo arrived at my office. It was Leo in a youth club uniform, standing with his new teammates. On the back he had written, “We won our first game. Thank you for everything.”
I put the photo on my desk. Sometimes, on busy days, I would look at it and remember the boy with the old soccer ball. I never saw Leo again, but every time I walk through an airport, I find myself looking around — just in case.
4. What made the author notice Leo?
A. His loud crying near the departure gate.
B. His usual behavior in the waiting area.
C. His friendly greeting to other passengers.
D. His sad expression while holding an old ball.
5. What can we infer about Leo from paragraph 3?
A. He gave up easily. B. He loved traveling.
C. He was strong-willed. D. He was afraid of strangers.
6. What does the underlined word “gleamed” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Lit up. B. Turned wet. C. Looked around. D. Took over.
7. What does the last paragraph imply about the author?
A. He doubts Leo’s success. B. He often helps kids at airports.
C. He keeps Leo in his mind. D. He regrets losing touch with Leo.

Ants that consume a sugary treat mixed with caffeine become noticeably better at finding their way back to it. A new study, published in Science, focused on Argentine ants, a widespread attacking species. Efforts to control them typically rely on poisonous bait (诱饵), but these strategies often fall short. The colony of ants may ignore the bait or abandon it before it spreads widely. The research team from the University of Regensburg explored whether caffeine, which is already known to enhance learning in bees, could help ants better remember bait locations and lead more nestmates to them.
To investigate this idea, the scientists designed a controlled experiment using different caffeine levels. 142 ants crossed a small toy drawbridge onto a test surface, which consisted of an A4 sheet placed over acrylic (丙烯酸). There, they encountered a drop of sugar solution containing 0 ppm, 25 ppm, 250 ppm, or 2,000 ppm of caffeine.
The team tracked each ant’s movement with an automated system, measuring both travel time and how direct their paths were. Ants that received only sugar showed little improvement over time, indicating they were not learning the reward’s location effectively. For ants exposed to 25 ppm of caffeine, foraging (觅食) time decreased by 28 percent with each visit. At 250 ppm, the improvement reached 38 percent. The highest caffeine level did not produce the same benefit.
The improvement was not due to increased speed. Instead, caffeinated ants followed more direct routes, suggesting stronger focus and better spatial memory. Their pace remained unchanged across all doses, but their paths became less winding at the lower and intermediate levels of caffeine.
The findings suggest that caffeine could play a role in improving pest control strategies for Argentine ants. By helping ants learn bait locations more quickly and bring back more nestmates, caffeine could increase how effectively poison spreads through a colony before the ants detect it. However, the researchers caution that more work is needed before applying this approach in real-world settings.
8. What inspired the research team to conduct the experiment?
A. The desire to stop ant attack.
B. The impact of caffeine on bees.
C. The need to increase ants’ speed.
D. The failure of their using previous baits.
9. What can be said about the ants exposed to 250 ppm of caffeine?
A. They increased their movement speed.
B. They were unable to return to their nests.
C. They acquired positional memory effectively.
D. They required additional duration for foraging.
10. How did caffeine affect the ants’ movement?
A. It greatly increased their pace.
B. It helped them avoid winding routes.
C. It brought them more food choices.
D. It encouraged them to explore new areas.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Caffeine Helping Ants Find Food Faster
B. Effective Poisonous Bait Attracting Ants
C. Caffeine’s Role in Controlling Ants’ Memory
D. A New Way to Study Ants’ Foraging Behavior

Step into a tropical forest, and something feels different right away. The air feels rich, the ground feels alive, and every plant seems part of a bigger system. This sense of connection is not just your imagination. Science now shows that trees in these forests actively support one another, creating a strong and balanced ecosystem.
To understand tree behavior, scientists from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) studied 17 forests across different countries, which ranged over three million trees and over 5,000 species. Each tree was measured and mapped using the same method, which allowed fair comparison between different forests.
This careful approach helped scientists see clear patterns. Forests closer to the equator showed more positive interactions between trees. Forests farther away showed fewer supportive connections. Trees still interact everywhere, but the balance changes with location and climate. This discovery helps explain why tropical forests feel so full and diverse. The environment encourages trees to work together instead of only competing.
One key reason for this support comes from special trees called legumes (豆科植物). These trees take nitrogen from the air and turn it into nutrients in the soil. Nearby plants benefit from this process and grow better. Another important system exists underground. Tree roots connect with tiny fungi in the soil. These fungi form networks that help trees absorb nutrients more easily.
Tall trees also play a big role in tropical forests. Large canopies (树冠) spread wide and cover the forest floor. This shade protects smaller plants from strong sunlight and dry conditions. Young plants often struggle in harsh environments. In tropical forests, shade creates a safer space for their growth. This protection increases survival and allows more species to exist in one place.
Understanding tree cooperation can help improve forest restoration. Planting nitrogen-rich trees and protecting large canopy trees can strengthen ecosystems. These steps can support more plant and animal life.
12. How did the author introduce the topic?
A. By listing sensory observations.
B. By explaining a scientific theory.
C. By presenting a false assumption.
D. By describing a personal imagination.
13. Why did scientists use a unified method to map all trees?
A. To speed up the measuring process.
B. To include as many trees as possible.
C. To protect the trees from being harmed.
D. To ensure comparability among the results.
14. How do legumes contribute to the forest ecosystem?
A. By offering shade for young plants.
B. By forming underground networks.
C. By enriching the soil for nearby plants.
D. By sending nutrients from air to ground.
15. What is the significance of understanding tree cooperation?
A. It explains forests’ diversity.
B. It improves trees’ overall quality.
C. It predicts the way climate shifts.
D. It guides forest restoration efforts.

My name is Kim Perlak. Back in 2009, right after graduate school, my life felt like a constant and lonely race. I was teaching music part-time at several colleges while also working for a couple of nonprofits. I loved music and the work, honestly, but rushing between jobs meant I never truly connected with anyone. I’d dash in, teach or work, and then dash out. Lovely places, wonderful colleagues... yet I always felt like an outsider looking in, never part of a real community.
One morning, on my way to one of my teaching jobs, I was walking through campus with my guitar slung (挂) across my back and two bags in each hand. As I was walking down the path to the music building, I tripped. My lunch, which was homemade chili in a plastic container, flew out of my bag and made a huge mess. Since it wasn’t a busy time of day on campus, I was left to clean up the chili without any witnesses and with little success. I had a moment when I was just thinking, “What am I doing? What am I doing with my life? What am I doing teaching at these places?” I just felt I was totally alone.
With my next class starting in just a few minutes, I didn’t have time to think. I was scheduled to work the next eight hours. So, I pulled myself together and headed into my first class.
After a few hours of teaching, it was time for my 30-minute lunch break. I didn’t know how I would gather something together before my next class. But I was in for a surprise.
While I had thought no one had seen the chili catastrophe (不幸事件) that morning, I was wrong. There was a wonderful woman in the registrar’s office and she had seen the entire thing from her window. She must have looked me up and figured out who I was.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
During the woman’s break, she drove to buy some food.

A. He gave up easily. B. He loved traveling.
C. He was strong-willed. D. He was afraid of strangers.
6. What does the underlined word “gleamed” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Lit up. B. Turned wet. C. Looked around. D. Took over.
7. What does the last paragraph imply about the author?
A. He doubts Leo’s success. B. He often helps kids at airports.

【答案】8. B 9. C 10. B 11. A

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“The research team from the University of Regensburg explored whether caffeine, which is already known to enhance learning in bees, could help ants better remember bait locations and lead more nestmates to them.(雷根斯堡大学的研究团队探究咖啡因能否帮助蚂蚁更好地记住诱饵的位置,并带领更多巢穴同伴前往那里,而已知咖啡因可以增强蜜蜂的学习能力)”可知,正是咖啡因对蜜蜂的作用给了研究团队灵感,促使他们开展针对蚂蚁的相关实验。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“At 250 ppm, the improvement reached 38 percent.(摄入250ppm咖啡因的蚂蚁,每次到访所需觅食时间减少了38%)”以及第四段“Instead, caffeinated ants followed more direct routes, suggesting stronger focus and better spatial memory...their paths became less winding at the lower and intermediate levels of caffeine.(相反,摄入咖啡因的蚂蚁会走更直接的路线,这说明它们注意力更集中,空间记忆也更好……在中低等剂量咖啡因的作用下,蚂蚁的路线蜿蜒程度更低)”可知,250ppm属于中低剂量区间,该剂量下的蚂蚁能有效获得位置记忆,缩短觅食时间,路线也更笔直。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Their pace remained unchanged across all doses, but their paths became less winding at the lower and intermediate levels of caffeine.(所有剂量组中蚂蚁的步速都没有变化,但是在中低等剂量咖啡因的作用下,蚂蚁的路线蜿蜒程度更低)”可知,咖啡因帮助蚂蚁避开了蜿蜒的路线,让路线更直接。

【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. D

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
During the woman’s break, she drove to buy some food.

That kind gesture and warm words changed everything for me.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
During the woman’s break, she drove to buy some food. So, when I came into the little music adjunct office, there was a bag on the table and it had everything in it. It had a sandwich, snacks, a drink, and a coffee. There was also a note with the bag. It read, “Dear Dr. Perlak, I saw you come in this morning and I wanted to make sure you had lunch. I hope you have a great day.” Holding the note and looking at the food, I couldn’t help but let tears flow down the face.
That kind gesture and warm words changed everything for me. It changed how I felt in that community. It felt like I belonged there. It felt like people did want to know me. It also changed how I moved through the world. I started to be conscious of the ways I could show up for other people, much as that woman in the Registrar’s office had shown up for me. I had a wonderful grandmother who used to say, “Any day can be improved by a sandwich and a cup of coffee.” I think this woman proved that to me and now I get to prove that to everybody else because of her.
