Many people believe a common saying: fish can only keep memories for just seven seconds. For a long time, we think fish are forgetful and they will never remember past experiences. However, a new scientific study shows that this old idea is completely wrong.
According to a new study published in the famous science magazine Nature, fish are much smarter than we imagine. Some kinds of fish have special DNA in their bodies. Surprisingly, this special genetic (遗传的) structure helps them form clearer and longer-lasting memories than human beings. More amazingly, their precious memories can be passed down to their young through genes.
This amazing ability plays an important role in fish’s survival in nature. It helps fish stay away from dangers and live longer. Here is a clear example. If parent fish once suffered from hunger in a special water environment, their baby fish will naturally remember this dangerous situation after birth. The young fish will make full preparations ahead of time to avoid hunger and keep safe.
In fact, fish can remember dangerous places, food sources (来源) and useful skills for months. Next time when your friends talk about fish’s seven-second memory, you can share this interesting science fact with them. It is really surprising that such small sea creatures have such powerful memories.
25. For a long time, what do people think of fish?
A. They are smart. B. They are special. C. They are forgetful. D. They are interesting.
26. What does the underlined word “precious” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. valuable B. terrible C. dangerous D. countable
27. What will happen when parent fish once suffered from hunger in one place?
A. They will tell their baby fish to remember this place.
B. The parent fish will remember this dangerous place.
C. Their baby fish will avoid hunger in this place after birth.
D. Their baby fish will naturally forget this dangerous place.
28. According to the text, fish can remember ______ for months.
A. a kind of food B. a good friend C. useful tools D. unsafe places
C
Tea and coffee are two of the most popular drinks in the world. However, people usually like one more than the other. These drinks also have very different uses.
Tea drinking started in China and India over 4,000 years ago, around 2700 BC. Tea is made from a leaf. These days, some people drink tea for health, using it to help with sleep, stress, or losing weight. However, most people in tea-drinking countries see tea as more than just a healthy drink. In fact, tea drinking in countries such as China is a part of the culture. In China, tea is always present when people meet. Whether in someone’s home or a business, tea is always offered as a way of welcoming. In the UK, homes and offices usually have tea time. This is a time when tea and other dishes are served in the afternoon. It is a way of relaxing with friends or co-workers.
Coffee came much later than tea, at just over 1,000 years ago. Coffee is made from beans. Something in the coffee beans makes a person feel more energy. Most people do not drink coffee to relax. Instead, they drink coffee to get going. Many people drink coffee in the morning to help them wake up. Others will also drink coffee during short breaks in the afternoon to keep going through the work day. Some people may visit coffee shops just to meet and talk with friends. However, many people at the coffee shop drink coffee while working on their computers.

Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for inviting me to speak to you about Blue Sky Rescue today. Let me begin with my own story.
Back in 2008, I was hiking in the mountains with some friends when one of them fell and got a bad head injury. We had to find help quickly, so we called an emergency (紧急情况) number. It was already dark, and we couldn’t even see where we were. After some time, we heard dogs barking and the voices of the Blue Sky Rescue team. I nearly started crying. We were so thankful that they found us!
I’ve never forgotten that day. Since then, I’ve wanted to help others too. I signed up with Blue Sky Rescue in 2009, and I’ve been a volunteer ever since. We’ve been to schools and other communities to teach children and adults how to stay safe and prepare for the worst. We’ve provided medical aid and searched for missing people after natural disasters.
Working as a volunteer has taught me many practical life-saving skills. It has also helped me understand the power of teamwork because it’s the key to successful rescues. Most of all, being a volunteer has taught me the value of every life.
The work is difficult. It’s voluntary, so we aren’t paid. We often go without food or sleep. But our primary goal has always been to save as many people as we can. I’m just an ordinary person, but I’ll rush into danger. To the people we’ve saved and their loved ones, I know we’re their heroes. And that makes everything we do worth it.
We want to do even more, but we can’t do it all alone. Will you join us as a volunteer? Together we can make a difference!
33. Why did the writer tell his own story in the second paragraph?
A. To introduce himself.
B. To become a volunteer.
C. To tell the reason why he joined Blue Sky Rescue.
D. To remind people of calling an emergency number.
34. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 4?
A. Working as a volunteer B. Hiking in the mountains
C. Teaching practical life-saving skills D. Searching for missing people
35. From the text, we can infer (推断) that ______.
A. the writer is paid for his work B. the writer wants to be a hero
C. some voluntary work is dangerous D. voluntary work is the key to success
36. How does the writer feel as a volunteer?
A. Bored. B. Proud. C. lonely. D. Successful.

Many people enjoy looking 52 pieces of art, but there are not many people who would like to pay a lot of money for art. Still, his paintings sell for millions. Another artist’s photograph of a simple, brown potato sold for 57 (much) than a million dollars. These are examples of when the value given to a piece of art may confuse (使困惑) some people.
In the end, the value of a piece of art 58 (depend) on each person. What may be worthless to 59 (first) person may be very valuable to another. In the end, the buyer decides 60 worth of a piece of art. The value of a piece of art just becomes the price someone pays for it.

Once upon a time, there was a family with 18 children living in a village. Two of the children, both boys, loved painting very much, but the family was so poor that it was impossible to send both of them to study at art school at the same time.
After many discussions, the two boys finally worked out a plan. They would toss (抛) a coin. The loser would go down into the mines (煤矿) and, with his money, pay for his brother’s college tuition (学费). Then, when the brother who won the toss finished his studies, he would pay for the other brother to study at the college.
One of the brothers, Albrecht Durer, won the toss and his brother Jack went down into the mines. Durer worked with all his heart and his paintings were much better than those of most of his teachers. He was beginning to make a lot of money for his paintings.
Durer returned. When he told Jack he could go to art college, Jack said softly: “The four years in the mines have done too much to my hands. It is too late. Now I can’t even hold a glass.”
To show his great love and respect for his brother, Durer drew his brother’s hands with palms (手掌) together and thin fingers towards the sky. He called his drawing The Praying Hands, which became very famous years later.
The next time you see a copy of that touching work, take a second look. Let it be your reminder: No one can ever succeed alone!
