A cute animal with four legs? Actually, dogs are much more than that. There are many secrets about them. Let’s take a closer look into the world of dogs and learn more about them.
Dogs are famous for their great senses (感官) of smell and hearing. With over 100 million scent cells (嗅觉细胞), dogs can smell thousands of scents. And they can hear sounds from farther away than humans because of their special ear shape. These abilities make dogs important in many places. For example, in places like train stations and airports, police dogs can find out dangerous things like drugs and bombs (毒品和炸弹). And for blind people, guide dogs are very helpful. They can help them “see” and travel around safely.
Just like humans, most dogs have a favourite paw (爪). They might be right- pawed or left- pawed. To figure out which paw your dog prefers, you can watch it walk and see which paw it usually puts forward first. Besides walking on paws, dogs also sweat (出汗) through them. Because of this, their paws are easy to get dirty with bacteria, and sometimes they even give off a popcorn-like smell.
Dogs have many ways to communicate. One way they do this is by smelling each other’s butts (屁股). The special smell can help dogs learn about others’ gender (性别), feelings, and health. Dogs also use body language to “show” their feelings. For example, they may turn in circles to say hello or hold their tails between their legs when they are afraid or sad.
29. What can dogs help humans do with their great senses?
a. hearing sounds from farther away b. finding out dangerous things at airports
c. helping blind people travelling safely d. sweating through their paws
A. a; b B. a; d C. b; c D. b; d
30. What does the underlined word “bacteria” mean in Chinese?
A. 习性 B. 环境 C. 细菌 D. 温度
31. How many dogs’ communicate ways are introduced in paragraph 4?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
32. How is the text organized?

I hope this letter finds you well.
Thanks for asking about my ideas on future life. I think it’ll be amazing. Robots will handle most housework, like cleaning and cooking, giving us more free time. We might live in smart homes where everything is controlled by our voices. Travel could be easier too—maybe flying cars will make commutes faster. Also, clean energy like solar power will be widely used to protect the environment.

31. How many dogs’ communicate ways are introduced in paragraph 4?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
32. How is the text organized?
A. B. C. D.

The Last kids on Earth is the first book in Max Brallier’s best-selling The Last kids on Earth series (系列丛书). It came out in 2015. Brallier, the writer, likes using the end of the world as a setting (背景) because he thinks there are no rules in such a world. “As a kid, you always have to follow rules,” he says. “But if it’s the end of the world, suddenly, you can do anything!”
The story happens in a world filled with monsters (怪物). At the start of the book, Jack Sullivan, a 13-year-old boy, is alone. After 42 days alone, Jack learns that three of his classmates are still alive (活着). Slowly Jack finds them. He first teams up with his best friend, Quint. Then Dirk joins the team.
