Beautiful walking trails with both mountain and seaside views are the perfect way to start a refreshing fall morning before taking in the scene at the K-U-K art gallery or a visit to the largest medieval cathedral (中世纪大教堂). It is also surrounded by countless small and large-scale food producers.
◆ Mdina—Malta
With no cars allowed, the “silent city” has maintained an atmosphere of beauty and delight throughout time, and its mix of medieval and baroque (巴洛克式的) architecture, including palaces, gives the feeling that you are truly traveling back in time.

It was a regular Monday when I received an email from my son’s school about a coming science fair. At first, I thought, “Great, I can’t wait to see the project of my son, Tim.” The thought of colorful displays and creative ideas cheered me.
However, as I read further, my excitement quickly turned to anxiety. Not only were students required to present their projects, but parents were expected to participate as well! This unexpected change left me feeling upset. “Oh, no. I’m not good at science and I haven’t done a project since I was in school. How can I help him?” I was also worried about how my lack of experience might affect my son and his chance to shine.
That evening, my son came home full of excitement, “Dad, this is going to be wonderful. We should make a volcano that erupts!” And so, we began our project with some online research and a trip to the store for supplies. I realized that our project might be displayed for everyone to see and any mistake could be embarrassing.
Our first attempt at building the volcano was a disaster. Fast forward to the weekend, and it was time for a practice run at school. I expected the other parents to be as confused as I was. I was wrong! They were so prepared that they could be scientists themselves. The pressure was on.
Over the next few days, we worked hard and our project improved. My son was excited, and I started to enjoy the process, too. The day of the science fair arrived, and my nervousness faded. It turned out that concentrating on having fun with my son was the best way to overcome my worries. Plus, seeing his smile made everything worth it.
Reflecting on the experience, I realized it had brought us closer. It was the first time my son and I had created something together. I now look forward to more projects in the future.
24. How did the author feel on receiving the letter?
A. Disappointed. B. Anxious. C. Excited. D. Content.
25. What could be inferred about the son?
A. He found the project too hard to complete. B. He relied heavily on his father for ideas.
C. He obviously lacked self-confidence. D. He really looked forward to the project.
26. What helped get rid of the author’s worries?
A. Completing the project without mistakes. B. His awareness that effort mattered more.
C. Focus on working with his son together. D. Good preparations for the science fair.
27. What did the author realize after the science fair?
A. The experience strengthened father-son ties. B. Those who are determined will succeed.
C. The spirit of science is to keep trying. D. Two heads are better than one.

When children learn a musical instrument, one of the hardest things for a parent to do is encourage them to practice. But here’s something parents can use to give their kids a reason to try: A study has found that playing a musical instrument may lead to better brain health in later life. That might not be enough to encourage a child who has better things to do, but it’s good news for those who enjoy music.
Researchers from the UK looked at data from an online survey of more than 1,000 people over the age of 40 who had been asked to talk about their musical experiences and exposure (暴露) to music during their lives. They were also given tasks that tested their memory and skills in things like planning and focusing.
The study found that playing a musical instrument, especially the piano, was connected with better memory and thinking skills. And continuing to play an instrument into later life was found to have an even more salutary effect. Singing was related to better brain health in older age too. The research team suggested that the social factors that came with singing in a singing group may also have had an effect.
One of the researchers, Anne Corbett, who is a professor of dementia (痴呆) research at the University of Exeter, said that encouraging older adults to return to music later in life could be a useful public health strategy. She said, “There is much evidence for the benefit of music group activities for individuals with dementia.” And she suggested that such activities could be used to reduce the risk of developing dementia.
Of those who took part in the survey, 89% said they had played a musical instrument at some time in their lives, and about half still played one. Around seven out of ten said they had taken part in group singing.
28. Which is a benefit children learning musical instruments get according to the text?
A. Having better brain health in later life. B. Encouraging them to do things well.
C. Getting courage to try new things. D. Becoming famous.
29. What does the underlined word “salutary” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Sufficient. B. Positive. C. Absolute. D. Typical.
30. According to Anne, how could music benefit older adults?
A. It helps them stay physically active. B. It provides a relaxing mind in their free time.
C. It lowers the chance of developing dementia. D. It encourages them to sing more.
31. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To encourage people to join in music activities. B. To tell us what we should do in daily life.
C. To describe that singing is good for health. D. To explain the importance of a hobby.

A dried-out plain in the north of Sacramento, California was in perfect condition to fuel wildfires. It was 2014, and California was experiencing its worst drought in decades. The plain was full of dry brush. Fire prevention workers and ecologists in the state were desperately working to reduce potential wildfire fuel sources anywhere they could. Ecologists, facing a dangerously dry plain and a price tag of at least one million dollars for a major construction project to fix the site, did something surprising. They called in the beavers (河狸).
Thanks to the introduction of the animals, the site was restored to a lively plain, with trees popping up and streams flowing across the land. Damon Ciotii, a biologist who led the project, said he was amazed by the results of the project. He had estimated that the beavers would take about a decade to return the dried-out land to streams in the region, but the animals blew away his expectations. By year three, water was back. Ultimately, the project only cost $58,000, which was used to prepare the land for the beavers to come in and do what they do.
Beavers have essentially evolved to be the engineers of nature, transforming their landscape to suit their needs and to protect them from predators. They are quick in the water and can build dams (水堤) to make ponds and wetlands where they can better survive.
The population of beavers in North America was once driven down due to heavy hunting. However, after the desire for beaver hats and coats reduced, the population began to recover. The success of the project has led to a number of other projects using beavers for land restoration through California. Government programs were beginning to take notice and offer training to local people on how to use beavers for wild fire prevention.
32. Why was Ciotii surprised by the project?
A. It changed the land into a lively plain. B. It took effect quicker than expected.
C. It used animals to solve the issue. D. It cost significantly less money.
33. How did the beavers reduce the wildfire fuel sources?
A. They helped the trees grow better. B. They created water bodies.
C. They protected dams. D. They ate the dry bush.
34. What do we know about beavers in North America?
A. They are the main solution to the wildfire problem.
B. They got protected for their roles in ecology.
C. They were threatened by humans.
D. They are trained to stop wildfire.
35. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To inform the use of beavers in wildfire prevention.
B. To introduce the benefits of working with animals.
C. To illustrate the cause and effect of wildfire.
D. To present a study on beavers behavior.

To protect yourself and your information, you’ll want to use long and strong passwords on the Web that are easy for you to recall but difficult for others to guess. However, some of the most commonly used passwords (密码) are based on family names, hobbies, or just a simple pattern. ____36____ Let’s take a look at some of the most common password mistakes and how to fix them.
Password: brian12 kate 5 — It’s my kids’ names and ages.
Problem: This password uses too much personal information, along with common words.
Solution: ____37____ And rather than using family names, we could combine a character from a movie with a type of food. For example, Chewbacca and pizza could become chEwbAccA&p! ZZa.
Password: w3St! — It’s just the beginning of my street address with a few extra characters.
Problem: ____38____ It also includes part of the user’s address, which is publicly available (可获得的) information.
Solution: A stronger version of this password would be much longer, ideally more than 10 characters. We could also use a nearby street name instead of her current address. For example, Pemberly Ave could become PeMberLY% Av.
Password: 123abccba321 — ____39____
Problem: While patterns like this are easy to remember, they’re also some of the first things a hacker (黑客) might guess when trying to get your account (账户).
Solution: Remember that random passwords are much stronger than simple patterns. If you’re having trouble creating a new password, try using a password generator (密码生成器) instead. Here’s an example of a generated password: #eV $plg& qf.
Password: BrAve Z! 2 — I use the same passwords for all my accounts.
Problem: ____40____ However, remember that you should never use the same password with different accounts.
Solution: Create a unique password for each of your online accounts.
A. This password is available at any time.
B. This password is too short and simple.
C. It’s long and difficult for someone else to guess.
D. There’s nothing really wrong with this password.
E. It’s easy to remember the simple pattern and type on my keyboard.
F. This kind of password is easy to remember but highly insecure (不安全的).
G. A stronger password would use symbols, capital letters, and a random order.

“There’s another deep infection... I’m afraid we’re going to have to amputate (截肢) your son’s leg,” the doctor explained to Jackie Burns as she fought back tears of desperation.
In June 2018, her 10-year-old son Gavin was in a horrific car accident. He had been airlifted by medical helicopter to a local children’s hospital where he underwent several surgeries trying to save his left leg and foot. But nothing had worked. Gavin ultimately had to have his leg amputated from the knee down. After 17 days in the hospital, the boy was finally able to go home.
The following year, Gavin did not go to a regular school. Instead, he was taught at home. This was very difficult because he had to handle many things at once. He needed to go to physical therapy (治疗) regularly, visit the doctor, and learn how to use his prosthetic leg (假肢). Later, he had to have another surgery. Life was very hard for him.
When he was finally able to go back to school, he still needed help. Besides using his prosthetic leg, he also had to use a wheelchair to get around. He was very worried about fitting in with his classmates again. Other kids could run and jump, but he was not the same. He was afraid people might look at him differently or think he was strange.
“You’re still the same Gavin inside even though you may look different from other kids,” Jackie said, hugging him tightly. “You can still do anything you put your mind to. I believe in you!”
As the years rolled by, Gavin held on to his mother’s words, and by high school, he had become stronger, more confident and more skilled at using his prosthetic leg.
One day, the 17-year-old came into the kitchen with a smile. “Mom, I want to play football.” Jackie froze and her heart skipped a beat. “Are you sure?” Gavin raised his head with confidence and answered loudly and clearly, “I am. After all, you said I could do anything!”

【答案】17. C 18. C 19. A 20. C
【解析】
【原文】“The average person spends between eight and ten hours on average in bed every night, so it’s important to spend some time getting your bedroom environment right!” Hayley Worley, founder of Sheet Society, knows a thing or two about getting a good night’s sleep. And she believes that your bedroom plays a huge role in the length and quality of your sleep. So what can boost our beauty sleep in the bedroom? First, with the right styling, blankets can bring warmth and softness to your bedroom. Position a small blanket at the foot of your bed to create visual balance and a sense of cosiness around the space where you rest and sleep. Second, for a deep sleep, we’re turning to soft and silky bamboo bedding. Third, add a new step to your “wind down” routine with a hot cup of herbal tea. Fourth, color plays an important part in calming you down, so pick a color or combination that suits your personal style. Last but not least, the right lighting is the key to relaxation. In the evenings, it helps to switch off any main lights and use softer, warm lighting to light your home. Style your bedside with a low-lit table lamp, as darker light is proven to be helpful for sleep.

【答案】28. A 29. B 30. C 31. A

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
With his parents’ support, Gavin signed up for the football team and was accepted. At first, he was a bit nervous, wondering if he could keep up with the other players who all had two healthy legs. However, his coach, who had seen Gavin’s determination during the tryouts, encouraged him, saying, “You’ve got a strong spirit, Gavin, and that’s what matters most on the field.” Gavin took these words to heart and practiced tirelessly, learning how to balance and run with his prosthetic leg. His teammates, who initially had doubts, soon grew to respect him for his hard work and positive attitude.
Finally, the day for the football game came. Gavin’s heart pounded with excitement as he stepped onto the field, his prosthetic leg feeling steady beneath him. The crowd roared as the game began, and Gavin focused on every move, knowing that this was his chance to prove himself. During a crucial play, he intercepted the ball and sprinted towards the goal, his teammates cheering him on. As he scored, the stadium erupted in applause, and Gavin knew that all his efforts had paid off. After the game, his coach hugged him and said, “You’ve shown everyone that nothing can stop you, Gavin.” Gavin smiled, feeling proud of what he had achieved, knowing that his mother’s words had guided him every step of the way.
