Marie Curie, one of the greatest scientists in history, was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1867. When she was young, her family went through hard times: her mother died when she was 10, and her father lost his job soon after. Though life was difficult, she fell in love with science and kept studying hard. Peng Shilu was born in a family of heroes in Haifeng, Guangdong on December 18, 1925. When he was less than five years old, his parents died. The young boy was taken care of and protected by the poor. He moved between 46 different families and lived a hard life.
In 1940, Peng Shilu was taken to Chongqing. Later he went to study in Yan’an. In 1951, he went abroad to learn chemical engineering. When he completed his studies, he got an excellent grade.
In 1956, Peng Shilu was asked, “Are you ready to change your research field?” “Of course, as long as the motherland has a need!” With the strong belief (信念), Peng Shilu began to study nuclear power (核动力) at once. In the early 1960s, China knew little about developing nuclear submarines (核潜艇). Peng Shilu and other scientists were learning, researching and practicing. In 1970, China’s first nuclear submarine was built. In 1974, China became the fifth country in the world to have a nuclear submarine.
Peng Shilu worked very hard. He spent all his life on nuclear power. “I have only done two things in my life. One is to build nuclear submarines and the other is to build nuclear power stations,” said Peng.
He died on March 22, 2021, at the age of 96. As a pioneer in nuclear power, he is remembered by the people and the country. On March 3, 2022, he was named “Touching China’s Figure (人物) of the Year 2021.”

Marie Curie, one of the greatest scientists in history, was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1867. When she was young, her family went through hard times: her mother died when she was 10, and her father lost his job soon after. Marie Curie, one of the greatest scientists in history, was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1867. When she was young, her family went through hard times: her mother died when she was 10, and her father lost his job soon after. Though life was difficult, she fell in love with science and kept studying hard. At that time, women in Poland were not allowed to go to university, so she worked for years to save money and finally moved to Paris for further study at the age of 24.
In Paris, Marie met Pierre Curie, a talented French scientist. They got married and worked together on the study of radioactivity (放射现象). In 1898, the couple discovered two new elements (元素). One was named polonium (钋), after Marie’s home country Poland. The other was radium (镭), and it had much stronger radioactivity than any known material at that time. In 1970, China’s first nuclear submarine was built. In 1974, China became the fifth country in the world to have a nuclear submarine.
Peng Shilu worked very hard. He spent all his life on nuclear power. “I have only done two things in my life. One is to build nuclear submarines and the other is to build nuclear power stations,” said Peng.
He died on March 22, 2021, at the age of 96. As a pioneer in nuclear power, he is remembered by the people and the country. On March 3, 2022, he was named “Touching China’s Figure (人物) of the Year 2021.”
