In 1990, during a performance of my stage play, I became preoccupied with one particular member of the audience. While everybody else laughed, there she sat, staring at the floor, with her fingers in her ears. I’ll never forget her look of complete discomfort.
That woman was my mother. Despite the fact I’d established myself as a humorist, my mother never found me or my work particularly funny. She was my hardest critic. “Is Drew really that funny?” she’d ask family members.
To make matters worse, the feeling was mutual (相互的): though our social circle swore that she was humorous, I never saw it. My mother was supposedly very funny in her first language, Anishinaabemowin—an Indigenous (原住民的) language, but alas, I didn’t speak it. At family gatherings, when somebody would say something “funny” in Anishinaabemowin, she’d explain it to me. Sometimes the humour translated. Sometimes it didn’t.
For a while I was convinced I would never make her laugh. Then, in 2005, I succeeded. I had published a book called Me Funny. In it were dozens of essays deconstructing Indigenous humour, along with 50 so-called “Indian jokes” to break up the various chapters. (For instance, “Why do Native people hate snow? Because it’s white and all over our land.”) She laughed hard and declared, “Wow, that was funny!”
In 2009, my mother passed away at the age of 77. During the funeral, in the tears, family member after family member got up and recounted things she had done and said over the years. To my surprise, I found myself laughing. Suddenly I remembered a moment from the early ‘90s, when my mother asked me, completely serious, what “owie” meant in French. I struggled to come up with an answer until I spelled it out in my mind: oui (“yes” in English).
More and more stories about her surfaced. We laughed as we remembered her. I couldn’t see my mother’s forest for my own trees. I wish I could have shared those laughs with her while she was alive, but I’m glad I finally made the connection.
24. What prevented the author and his mother from understanding each other’s humour?
A. Language barriers.
B. The author’s unique job.
C. Mom’s critical personality.
D. Views of Indigenous people.
25. Why did the author laugh at mother’s funeral?
A. He tried to fit in his Indigenous family.
B. He recalled amusing moments about mom.
C. He wanted to hide his sadness over mother’s death.
D. He intended his laugh to make mother rest in peace.
26. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. The author learned from mother a very important life lesson.
B. The author failed to relate to his mother from her perspective.
C. The author finally understood mother’s sense of humour better.
D. The author didn’t write enough humorous books to make mother laugh.
27. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Am I funny? B. Why isn’t Mom laughing?
C. What’s so funny? D. Does laughter have an accent?
C
A new study on baby birds shows that traffic noise can affect their growth and lead to lifelong harm. The finding raises new concerns about the effect of noise pollution on wildlife — and humans as well.
Researchers already knew too much noise is likely to disturb birds, making it more difficult for the parents to communicate with and care for their baby birds. But it wasn’t clear whether the noise itself could directly harm young birds.
Mylene Mariette, a behavioral ecologist at Deakin University, and her team set out to answer that question with birds held on campus in Melbourne, Australia. For 5 nights in a row, they played eggs either road noise or bird songs for several hours. The sounds were kept at a volume of 65 decibels (分贝)— about the same loudness as a conversation in a bar or city traffic. Other eggs were left in silence. After the eggs hatched, the baby birds received one of two treatments — road noise or bird songs — for another 9 nights. The baby birds heard the sounds in a separate room, and then were returned to their nests.
Eggs exposed to traffic sounds were 19% less likely to hatch compared with those exposed to the sound of songs. It shows a clear effect of traffic noise, Mariette says. As the baby birds developed, they also showed worrying development signs. Those exposed to noise grew slower. Moreover, when those birds grew up, they had about half as many offspring (后代) as the birds exposed to songs as youngsters.
Hans Slabbekoorn, an ecologist and animal behavior expert at Leiden University, notes that these concerns apply to humans as well. “The findings suggest that the acoustic (听觉的) environment of birds in cities and along highways should be better managed,” he writes, “and that the acoustic comfort in hospital environments for pregnant mothers and babies requires special attention.” Eventually, the research might help reveal how much and in what ways noise pollution should be reduced.
28. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on about the study?
A. Its process. B. Its result. C. Its difficulty. D. Its purpose.
29. How are the findings explained in paragraph 4?
A. By giving examples. B. By analyzing reasons.
C. By making comparisons. D. By making predictions.
30. What do the findings indicate?
A. Move the birds from cities to protected areas.
B. Make laws to close highways and other noisy places.
C. Educate people on the bad effects of noise pollution.
D. Pay special attention to the hospital environment for babies.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Traffic noise helps birds communicate B. Scientists have found ways to reduce noise
C. Hospital environments are greatly affected D. Traffic noise causes lifelong harm to baby birds
D
A new study of e-sports gamers has found that sparkling water could be a better alternative to still water for those aiming to maintain concentration and alertness during extended periods of desk work.
Gamers often rely on caffeine-rich drinks such as coffee or energy drinks to stay in the zone during long sessions. However, consuming these caffeinated drinks in large quantities poses significant potential health risks, including sleep disruption and increased heart burden. Researchers from the University of Tsukuba in Japan thus sought to investigate whether sparkling water could provide a safer and equally effective alternative.
On two separate occasions, 14 casual gamers were asked to play virtual soccer for three hours. In one trial, they drank plain water; and in the other, they consumed sparkling water. Based on comprehensive measurements, including reaction speeds, pupil size changes (a key indicator of tiredness), physical stress hormones, and self-reported exhaustion levels, the results clearly indicated that sparkling water was superior in sustaining attention levels and minimizing tiredness.
Scientists propose a plausible theory behind this improvement. The carbon dioxide mixed in sparkling water interacts with specific sensory receptors in the mouth known as “transient receptor potential” (TRP) channels. This interaction triggers an increase in mental alertness, thereby enhancing cognitive performance during extended tasks.
Beyond subjective feelings of alertness, players also reported enjoying the sessions more when drinking sparkling water. Furthermore, statistical analysis revealed that players committed fewer in-game errors while under its influence, although their overall offensive and defensive skills remained unchanged.
“These findings demonstrate that sparkling water effectively reduces both subjective and objective signs of cognitive tiredness during extended e-sports performance”, the researchers concluded.
Nevertheless, these results should be considered alongside the study’s funding sources. The research received partial financial support from a soft drink company that manufactures the sparkling water employed in the experiments, and two of the study’s authors work for this company. These financial links introduce potential conflicts of interest that may have biased the results.
32. What does the study focus on?
A. A better option for sustained concentration.
B. The effects of caffeine-rich drinks on gamers.
C. Measures to reduce gaming-related tiredness.
D. The role of TRP channels in mental alertness.
33. How did sparkling water affect gamers’ performance?
A. By increasing physical stress levels.
B. By reducing misplay during matches.
C. By improving reaction speed significantly.
D. By enhancing offensive and defensive skills.
34. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. The core logic of the improvement.
B. The overall process of the research.
C. The key factors for the improvement.
D. The procedures for collecting experimental data.
35. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The Hidden Dangers of Caffeine Drinks
B. E-sports Gamer’s New Favorite: Sparkling Water
C. A New Study on TRP Channels and Mental Alertness
D. Sparkling Water—A Safer Choice for E-sports Gamers

How to stay focused while studying
Focus is like a muscle: it tires if you use it too long. The brain’s front part, responsible for willpower, needs regular breaks to refill its fuel. Study for 50 minutes and then walk away. A five-minute walk, preferably outside, boosts blood flow and clears mental rubbish. ____36____
Your phone is a slot machine(自动售货机)in your pocket. Every buzz or flashing pictures causes a happy feeling that breaks the weak chain of concentration. ____37____ If that feels impossible, start with “flight mode+1-hour timer”; after four cycles, reward yourself with a 10-minute scroll. The key is to make distraction harder than studying itself.
Multitasking is a lie. What feels like doing two things at once is actually the brain switching rapidly between tasks, eating extra sugar each time. ____38____ Close every tab that is not the one you are working on; turn the desk so it faces a blank wall. One task, one window, one goal — that is how deep focus is born.
____39____ Write tomorrow’s top three tasks on a sticky note the night before. Then divide the day into “focus blocks” of 90 minutes at most, with 15-minute recovery gaps. During a block, nothing else exists; during recovery, do something fun and totally unrelated. By 5 p.m. you will have spent four high-quality hours, not ten distracted ones.
Finally, train your brain to recognize when it has wandered. The moment you notice yourself rereading the same line, silently say “back” and return to the text. ____40____ After a week, you will catch yourself earlier; after a month, the number of “backs” drops sharply. Soon you will find yourself reading faster and remembering more.
A. Therefore, create a single-task battlefield.
B. This simple action acts like a mental seat-belt.
C. The earlier you start, the longer you can concentrate.
D. When you return, your“focus container” is full again.
E. Put it in another room, or at least inside a closed drawer.
F. Even the brightest students admit that they check phones too often.
G. Willpower disappears gradually as the day goes on, so treat focus like money: plan it.

The race started. The boy showed his determination, strength and power and he was first. The crowd cheered and waved at the boy. The wise man remained still and calm. The little boy, however, felt proud and important.
A second race was called, and two new young challengers came forward to run with the little boy. The little boy finished first once again. The crowd again cheered and waved at the boy. The wise man expressed no opinion. The little boy, however, felt proud and important.
“Another race, another race!” shouted the little boy. The wise old man stepped forward and presented the little boy with two new challengers, a frail old lady and a blind man. “What is this?” asked the little boy. “Race!” said the wise man. The race was started and the boy was the only finisher. The little boy raised his arms in delight. The crowd, however, was silent showing no happiness. “What has happened? 第一节 (满分15分)
Dear Peter,
I’m Li Hua, director of our school English Club. This December we plan to stage a 30-minute classic English comedy for the whole school. We have ten student actors and simple stage properties, but we are still looking for the right play.
Could you please recommend a short, funny play that is easy for Chinese high-school students to understand and act? We hope the story needs only everyday clothes and a few small props. If possible, tell us the title, the number of roles and where we can find the script.
Thank you very much. I look forward to your reply.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
Paragraph1:
The little boy thought a little, stood between the blind man and the frail old lady, feeling hesitant. Finally, he held the two special challengers' hands and started moving towards the winning line together. The race began. He walked more slowly than any other race he had participated in before. When they reached the finishing line, a great cheer went up from the crowd, which made him confused instead of feeling proud and important as before. Then he went to the wise old man in puzzlement.
Paragraph 2:
"Old man, I don't understand! Who are the crowed cheering for? Which one of us?" asked the little boy."They're cheering for you, my little boy," the wise old man answered, smiling gratifyingly, “what really matters is the process to success but not the result." Lost in deep thought for a while, the boy thanked the wise old man for making him realize the real meaning of success. From then on, he could be regarded as a truly successful athletic.

In old times, there was a story about a young athletic boy hungry for success, for whom winning was everything.
One day, the boy was preparing himself for a running competition in his small native village. He and two other young boys were to compete. A large crowd had gathered to witness the competition and a wise old man, upon hearing of the little boy, had traveled far to see it too.
Why don’t they join in my success?” he asked the wise old man. “Race again, ” replied the wise man. “This time, all three of you, finish together,” continued the wise man.

M: Didn’t people use to smoke and salt their foods to keep them longer?
W: Yes! Those are some methods I read about. I think drying is actually the oldest method. The method I was most interested in is called “canning”, though. I think it’s quite an easy and cheap way.
M: You mean keeping foods in metal cans like those we have now?
W: Yes, but that wasn’t invented until about 1810. In fact, the first commercial canning didn’t hit the market until about 100 years later.
M: That’s a long amount of time in between. Why do you think it took people that long to accept the process?
W: I read that it was because the method wasn’t perfect enough at first. It still had many problems that needed to be worked out. Particularly, if the can wasn’t closed correctly, it could cause serious illnesses.

C 19. B 20. A
Hello, everybody. We know that animal documentaries are always fun to watch. Lions hunt smaller animals. Monkeys play with each other. But do you know how people film these videos? Usually, a camera team goes into the wild. They use special cameras to film. However, the BBC wanted to get much closer. So they made “animal spies”! The animal spies are robots. They have cameras in their eyes. But they look and move like real animals. These spies worked in the wild. They tried to be part of real animal groups. The BBC used them to make a documentary called Spy in the Wild. To finish the documentary, the camera team made 34 robot animals. They made monkeys, birds and even worms. It could take about 40 days to 180 days to make one animal spy. And it took the team three years to shoot the documentary. The team traveled 530 kilometers. They went to the Arctic, the Antarctic and many places in between. They filmed more than 8,000 hours of material. Every hour-long episode was made from 1,250 hours of material. To make good spies, the camera team needed to learn the living habits of real animals. Many funny things happened between the spies and the animals. Find out more by watching the documentary yourself.

根据第二段中“The selection process begins with an application. Applicants are asked to hand in a two-page summary of their business idea along with resumes (简历).(选择过程从申请开始。应聘者被要求在提交简历的同时提交一份两页纸的商业理念总结)”和“only a small percentage of applicants — about the top 5% — are invited to move on to the second stage. This stage involves responding to a set of detailed written questions within a two-week window. (只有一小部分申请者——大约前5%——能获邀进入第二阶段。这一阶段要求在两周内完成一套详细的书面问题作答)”;第三段中“From there, a final group of standout applicants is chosen for interviews conducted through phone and email.(从这些申请者中,最终会筛选出一组最杰出的候选人,通过电话和邮件进行面试)”可知,选拔过程包括申请提交、书面问题回答和面试三个阶段。故选B项。
22.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Beyond financial support, selected applicants will also benefit from the recognition and visibility that comes with being chosen by a respected global funding initiative.(除了资金支持外,被选中的申请者还将受益于被一个受人尊敬的全球资助项目选中所带来的认可和知名度)”可知,除了资金支持外,获奖者还能获得更高的公众关注度。故选A项。

A 25. B 26. B 27. C
根据第三段“To make matters worse, the feeling was mutual : though our social circle swore that she was humorous, I never saw it. My mother was supposedly very funny in her first language, Anishinaabemowin—an Indigenous language, but alas, I didn’t speak it. At family gatherings, when somebody would say something “funny” in Anishinaabemowin, she’d explain it to me. Sometimes the humour translated. Sometimes it didn’t.”(更糟糕的是,这种感觉是相互的:虽然我们的社交圈都说她很幽默,但我从来没有看到过。我的母亲在她的第一语言anishinaabemowin(一种土著语言)中被认为非常有趣,但是,唉,我不会说这种语言。 故选A项。
根据第五、六段中“During the funeral, in the tears, family member after family member got up and recounted things she had done and said over the years. To my surprise, I found myself laughing. Suddenly I remembered a moment from the early ‘90s, when my mother asked me, completely serious, what “owie” meant in French. I struggled to come up with an answer until I spelled it out in my mind: oui (“yes” in English)...More and more stories about her surfaced.
根据第三段中“To make matters worse, the feeling was mutual : though our social circle swore that she was humorous, I never saw it.”(更糟糕的是,这种感觉是相互的:虽然我们的社交圈都说她很幽默,但我从来没有看到过。)以及文章最后一句“I wish I could have shared those laughs with her while she was alive, but I’m glad I finally made the connection.”(我希望我能在她活着的时候和她分享那些笑声,但我很高兴我终于建立了联系。)
通读全文,尤其是第二段中“Despite the fact I’d established myself as a humorist, my mother never found me or my work particularly funny. She was my hardest critic. “Is Drew really that funny?” she’d ask family members.”(尽管我已经把自己塑造成一个幽默作家,但我母亲从未觉得我或我的作品特别有趣。 和第四段“For a while I was convinced I would never make her laugh. Then, in 2005, I succeeded. I had published a book called Me Funny. In it were dozens of essays deconstructing Indigenous humour, along with 50 so-called “Indian jokes” to break up the various chapters. (For instance, “Why do Native people hate snow? Because it’s white and all over our land.”) She laughed hard and declared, “Wow, that was funny!””(有一段时间,我确信我永远也逗不了她笑。

A 29. C 30. D 31. D
根据第三段“Mylene Mariette, a behavioral ecologist at Deakin University, and her team set out to answer that question with birds held on campus in Melbourne, Australia. For 5 nights in a row, they played eggs either road noise or bird songs for several hours. The sounds were kept at a volume of 65 decibels (分贝)—about the same loudness as a conversation in a bar or city traffic. Other eggs were left in silence. After the eggs hatched, the baby birds received one of two treatments—road noise or bird songs—for another 9 nights. The baby birds heard the sounds in a separate room, and then were returned to their nests.”(迪肯大学的行为生态学家Mylene Mariette和她的团队开始用澳大利亚墨尔本校园里饲养的鸟类来回答这个问题。 故选A。
根据第四段“Eggs exposed to traffic sounds were 19% less likely to hatch compared with those exposed to the sound of songs. It shows a clear effect of traffic noise, Mariette says. As the baby birds developed, they also showed worrying development signs. Those exposed to noise grew slower. Moreover, when those birds grew up, they had about half as many offspring (后代) as the birds exposed to songs as youngsters.”(与那些暴露在歌声中的蛋相比,暴露在交通声音中的蛋孵化的可能性要低19%。
根据最后一段“The findings suggest that the acoustic (听觉的) environment of birds in cities and along highways should be better managed,” he writes, “and that the acoustic comfort in hospital environments for pregnant mothers and babies requires special attention.”(研究结果表明,城市和高速公路沿线鸟类的声环境应该得到更好的管理,”他写道,“医院环境中孕妇和婴儿的声舒适需要特别注意。”)
根据第一段“A new study on baby birds shows that traffic noise can affect their growth and lead to lifelong harm.”(一项关于幼鸟的新研究表明,交通噪音会影响它们的生长,并导致终身伤害。)

D 37. E 38. A 39. G 40. B
36.由上文“Study for 50 minutes and then walk away. A five-minute walk, preferably outside, boosts blood flow and clears mental rubbish. (学习50分钟然后离开。五分钟的步行,最好在室外,能促进血液流动并清除大脑垃圾。)”可知,本空要说明短暂休息后带来的积极效果,D选项“When you return, your ‘focus container’ is full again. (当你回来时,你的‘专注力容器’又满了。)”能承接上文,符合题意,该选项中的“return”与上文的“walk away”形成对应,说明短暂离开后回归的状态,且形象地解释了休息对恢复专注力的作用。故选D。
37.由上文“Your phone is a slot machine(自动售货机)in your pocket. Every buzz or flashing pictures causes a happy feeling that breaks the weak chain of concentration. (你的手机就像口袋里的自动售货机。每一次嗡嗡声或闪烁的图片都会带来愉悦感,打断脆弱的注意力链条。)”可知,本空要提出应对手机干扰的具体办法,E选项“Put it in another room, or at least inside a closed drawer. (把它放到另一个房间,或者至少放进一个关着的抽屉里。)”能承接上文,符合题意,该选项直接给出了物理上远离手机的建议,是解决上述干扰问题的有效策略。其中“it”指代前文的“your phone”。故选E。
38.由上文“Multitasking is a lie. What feels like doing two things at once is actually the brain switching rapidly between tasks, eating extra sugar each time. (多任务处理是个谎言。感觉像是同时做两件事,实际上是大脑在不同任务间快速切换,每次切换都消耗额外的能量。)”以及下文“Close every tab that is not the one you are working on; turn the desk so it faces a blank wall. One task, one window, one goal — that is how deep focus is born. 故选A。
39.由下文“Write tomorrow’s top three tasks on a sticky note the night before. Then divide the day into ‘focus blocks’ of 90 minutes at most, with 15-minute recovery gaps. (前一天晚上把明天最重要的三个任务写在便利贴上。然后把一天分成最多90分钟的‘专注区块’,中间留出15分钟的休息时间。)”及“By 5 p.m. you will have spent four high-quality hours, not ten distracted ones. (到下午5点,你将已经度过了四个高质量的小时,而不是十个分心的小时。)” 可知,本段主要讲的是提前规划时间和任务,G选项“Willpower disappears gradually as the day goes on, so treat focus like money: plan it. (意志力随着一天的推移逐渐消失,所以像对待金钱一样对待专注力:规划它。)”能概括本段主旨,符合题意,该选项点明了提前规划的原因(意志力会衰减)和核心方法(像规划金钱一样规划专注力)。故选G。
40.由上文“The moment you notice yourself rereading the same line, silently say ‘back’ and return to the text. (当你注意到自己在重读同一行时,默默地说‘回去’并回到文本。)”以及下文“After a week, you will catch yourself earlier; after a month, the number of ‘backs’ drops sharply. Soon you will find yourself reading faster and remembering more. (一周后,你会更早地察觉到自己走神;一个月后,‘回去’的次数会急剧下降。很快你会发现自己读得更快,记得更多。)”可知,本空要说明“silently say ‘back’ ”这个简单动作的作用,B选项“This simple action acts like a mental seat-belt. (这个简单的动作就像一条精神安全带。)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“This simple action”指代上文的“silently say ‘back’”,并用比喻说明了其保护专注力、防止思维进一步偏离的作用,与下文的训练效果相呼应。故选B。

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In old times, there was a story about a young athletic boy hungry for success, for whom winning was everything.
One day, the boy was preparing himself for a running competition in his small native village. He and two other young boys were to compete. A large crowd had gathered to witness the competition and a wise old man, upon hearing of the little boy, had traveled far to see it too.
Why don’t they join in my success?” he asked the wise old man. “Race again, ” replied the wise man. “This time, all three of you, finish together,” continued the wise man.
