While English is getting more important in our schools, Chinese has become popular among foreign kids. But Chinese can be more difficult to learn. At least 16-year-old Piao Chenglong thinks so. “English is easier for me. Chinese characters (汉字) have too many strokes (笔画),” said Piao. “But I want to learn it. Insomnia is a sleep disorder that affects about 10% of adults in the United States. It is characterized by difficulty with falling asleep, or waking up too early, at least three times per week for a period of three months or more. If you happen to struggle with insomnia, you can try a weighted metal chain blanket (毯子), one that might sound a little strange but effective.
A team of researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden conducted a study to determine whether a weighted metal chain blanket could improve insomnia symptoms (症状) compared to a light plastic chain blanket. Subjects were randomly given either a weighted metal chain blanket or a light plastic chain blanket, which were the same shape and size. Those who were provided with a weighted metal chain blanket first tried on an 8-kilogram blanket. If this was too heavy, a 6-kilogram blanket was then provided. Over a four-week period, their sleep was judged using surveys and a wrist-based device called an actigraph.
They found participants who used the weighted metal chain blanket reported that their insomnia symptoms dropped significantly, while those who had used the light plastic chain blanket did not experience such obvious improvements. Furthermore, anxiety symptoms decreased much more for those who used the weighted metal chain blanket than those who used the light plastic chain blanket.
The principle behind these blankets is that the pressure of the weight provides some value of treatment. It’s almost like a baby’s wrapping blanket that calms it as it sleeps. Weighted blankets can calm your nerves. Pressure from the blanket may contribute to nervous system responses that lower your heart rate and breathing when you’re anxious. This can help you calm down and sleep. The pressure could also cause your brain to release a chemical called serotonin, which helps your mind and body calm down.
“While these findings are promising, more research is needed to support the effectiveness,” says the lead researcher.
28.How does the author introduce the topic?
A.By giving an example. B.By raising a question.
C.By analyzing causes. D.By describing symptoms.
29.What does paragraph 2 focus on concerning the research?
A.Its background. B.Its process. C.Its findings. D.Its limitations.
30.Why can a weighted metal chain blanket promise a better sleep?
A.Its pressure calms people down. B.Its material reduces people’s anxiety.
C.It monitors people’s heart rate. D.It gives off comforting chemicals.
31.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the research?
A.Doubtful. B.Unclear. C.Objective. D.Indifferent.
D
Dogs have been a part of human society for over 20, 000 years. Whereas they first served people by supporting hunters, it did not take long before they became part of the home. Companion dogs might not help secure food, but for years evidence has mounted that they help reduce anxiety and improve social skills.
Research led by Kikusui Takefumi at Azabu University in Japan, published recently in iScience, reveals that the microbes (微生物) found in the guts of dog owners are notably different from those who do not own dogs and that this is, at least partially, responsible for the behavioural differences.
Dr. Kikusui specifically worked with teenagers. He and his colleagues psychologically analysed 96 teens who were dog owners and 247 teens who were not. As expected, dog owners suffered from fewer social problems. More specifically, they showed lowered aggression, reduced bad behaviour and less social withdrawal. Dr. Kikusui and his colleagues then collected saliva (唾液) samples from the participants and noted that several bacteria were significantly more abundant in samples from dog owners. They further found that participants within whom these key microbes were rare also tended to have more bad behaviours. This finding suggested that microbes, added to the human gut by dogs, may be influencing the brains of their owners in healthy ways.
In the next step, he cultured microbe samples from both groups of teens in the lab and fed them to 24 mice. After six weeks, he monitored them as they were put through a series of social skills tests. Remarkably, mice carrying the microbes of teen dog owners spent up to 14 seconds sniffing (嗅) unfamiliar mice whereas mice carrying the microbes of teens without dogs spent only six seconds doing so.
Dr. Kikusui admits that making direct comparisons between mouse and human behaviour is not ideal, but his findings indicate that the probiotic changes brought about by dog ownership influence the brain. If the conclusions hold, it seems that the path to a healthier mind may begin not with self- reflection, but with a gentle touch and a few lick.
32. What does the underlined word “mounted” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Increased. B. Changed. C. Disappeared. D. Commented.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The preparation work for the mouse experiment.
B. The process of behavioural research on teenagers.
C. The relationship between social problems and dogs.
D. The ways of collecting saliva samples from teenagers.
34. What is the purpose of Dr. Kikusui’s experiment?
A. To prove that dogs became an essential part of the home.
B To find out how to cure teenagers’ social problems completely.
C. To explore if microbes from dogs influence owners’ brains positively.
D. To study the difference between mice and human behavioural patterns.
35. What is Dr. Kikusui’s attitude towards the result?
A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Overconfident.

Today was the district violin competition—the one Lina had been dreaming of. She’d received the well-worn violin from Grandma on her 10th birthday, and for years, Grandma had sat beside her, teaching her every note until her hands shook too much to hold the bow.
“Music isn’t just about perfect notes, ” Grandma always said, gently wiping sweat from Lina’s forehead after late- night practice. “It’s about the heart you put in—let the music tell your story.” Those warm words had fueled Lina through countless tough days, when sore fingers made her want to give up.
Disaster struck last night. Lina was deep in practicing her favorite piece, Amazing Grace, when a sharp sound popped—her G string had broken. She was in panic as she dug through her violin box, only to find no spare. The music store had closed hours ago, and no neighbors in her quiet neighborhood owned a violin string to lend. Hot tears rolled down her cheeks as she sat onto the floor, the broken string lying lifeless at her feet.
Grandma, who’d been reading by the window, set down her book and headed for her slowly, a weak but warm smile on her face. She knelt beside Lina, touched her hair softly and said, “Don’t cry, dear. Use the old string from my first violin—it’s in the bottom drawer of my desk. It’s worn and not perfect, but it holds stories of perseverance, just like we do.” Lina nodded, a flash of hope returning to her eyes.
Now, the competition hall was bright and crowded with contestants (选手) and audience members. Lina found a quiet corner, her hands trembling slightly as she carefully fitted the old string to her violin. When her name was called, Lina grabbed her violin tightly, her damp palms sweating. Then she took a deep breath and stepped onto the stage. Closing her eyes, she let Grandma’s words echo (回响) in her mind, then placed the bow on the strings and began to play.
When she was playing the second part, the string fell off.

W: No, I don’t think so. My parents have offered to take care of him, and I don’t think he’d get used to the city life.
M: You are probably right. But aren’t you afraid of moving to such a big place, especially after living in a small village?
W: Not really. I think I’ll enjoy myself. There’s so much to do there. I expect I won’t miss the countryside much and I can always come back and visit it.

30.Why can a weighted metal chain blanket promise a better sleep?
A.Its pressure calms people down. B.Its material reduces people’s anxiety.
C.It monitors people’s heart rate. D.It gives off comforting chemicals.
31.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the research?
A.Doubtful. B.Unclear. C.Objective. D.Indifferent.

B. The process of behavioural research on teenagers.
C The relationship between social problems and dogs.
D. The ways of collecting saliva samples from teenagers.
34. What is the purpose of Dr. Kikusui’s experiment?
A. To prove that dogs became an essential part of the home.
B. To find out how to cure teenagers’ social problems completely.
C. To explore if microbes from dogs influence owners’ brains positively.
D. To study the difference between mice and human behavioural patterns.
35. What is Dr. Kikusui’s attitude towards the result?
A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Overconfident.

故填were。
固定搭配“be known for doing sth.(因做某事而闻名)”,介词for后接动名词形式。
固定句型“It takes (sb.) some time to do sth.(做某事花费(某人)多长时间)”,句中It为形式主语,真正主语为后面的to do不定式。 故填It。
故填from。
故填what。
故填was started。
故填To sell。

When she was playing the second part, the string fell off.A sudden silence fell over the hall. Lina froze for a second, panic flashing across her face. However, Grandma’s words instantly calmed her down. Instead of giving up, she adjusted her breath and continued the melody with the remaining strings. She poured all her passion and perseverance into every note. Her tender yet powerful music touched every audience present. When she finished, the whole hall burst into warm and long-lasting applause.
After the competition, Lina was invited to deliver an award speech.Lina shared her special experience on stage. She said that perfect equipment never makes perfect music, but a sincere and persistent heart does. The worn string was not a disaster but a gift from Grandma, carrying endless love and encouragement. She also mentioned that perseverance beats all difficulties. Her sincere speech won another round of applause. From this experience, Lina truly understood the real meaning of music and grew more confident in her musical journey.

C.It monitors people’s heart rate. D.It gives off comforting chemicals.
31.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the research?
A.Doubtful. B.Unclear. C.Objective. D.Indifferent.
