Bertha Ngumbi, my mother, is one of the kindest women I know. However, when I was a child growing up in Kenya with my four siblings (兄弟姐妹), her kindness often annoyed us. Whenever visitors came to our home, whether relatives or strangers, expected or not, my mother would ask us to prepare and serve them black tea. If visitors arrived during lunch or dinner, she would invite them to eat with us, which meant less food for the family. As children, we felt unhappy and sometimes even complained about it.
My sister Faith especially disliked those moments when we had little firewood or when the wood was wet from rain, because making tea became difficult. My sisters and I even believed that some people took advantage of our mother’s generosity by appearing at mealtime.
Years later, after moving to the United States to live and teach, I began to see things differently. My mother’s kindness had deeply influenced me. Even when I struggled myself, I still tried to help relatives, friends, and even strangers. If unexpected visitors came to my house one day, I would warmly offer them tea and food, just as my mother always did.
Wanting to understand the source of her kindness, I asked my mother about it. She explained that she had learned it from her own mother, my grandmother. Growing up in a large family with eight siblings, my mother often returned home from school to discover that some of their lunch had been given away to hungry travelers. Although the children were upset at times, their mother continued helping others whenever she could.
When I asked my mother whether she would have changed if she had known we disliked her generosity, she answered firmly that she would never stop helping people. Today, I fully understand her actions and remain deeply grateful for the compassion (同情) she planted in me.

All but two of Austria’s 96 glaciers (冰川) have retreated (缩小) over the last two years, the monitors in the Alpine country reported on Friday, saying the “dramatic development” highlights the impact of climate change. The latest report from the Austrian Alpine Club shows the Alpeiner Ferner in the western Tyrol region and Stubacher Sonnblickkees in Salzburg to the east are facing the greatest loss, each with a retreat of more than 100 meters (about 328 feet) . The average retreat was more than 20 meters (about 65 feet) .
“The breakdown of the glacier tongue is also progressing at the Pasterze, Austria’s largest glacier, making the results of climate change visible,” the club said in the report covering 2024 and 2025. It added, “The report confirms once again the long-term trend: The glaciers in Austria continue to retreat significantly in length, area, and volume.” Neighboring Switzerland, which is home to the most glaciers in Europe, has noted a similar retreat in its glaciers in recent years, a trend that has been reported around the world.
The retreat of the glaciers in Europe has implications for drinking water, power generation, agriculture, infrastructure, recreational activities, the Alpine landscape and more. “The glaciers are melting, and with every new report, the urgency grows,” club vice president Nicole Slupetzky said. “It’s no longer a question of whether we can still save the glaciers in their old form; it’s about relieving the results for ourselves.”
Poor weather conditions such as low snowfall, warm temperatures including an exceptionally hot June last year — nearly 5 degrees Celsius above the average — have contributed to the retreat, the club said. These factors accelerated the melting of ice. Without a shift in weather patterns, the trend will likely worsen.

San Francisco Bay is one of the busiest waterways in the US. Ferries, cargo ships and tankers cut through its choppy (波浪起伏的) waters every day. Unfortunately, they share the bay with an unexpected visitor: gray whales searching for food.
Last year, 21 dead gray whales were found in the Bay Area, with at least 40% killed by ship strikes. Scientists believe the real number is even higher, since many bodies sink before being found. At least 10 more have died in the Bay Area so far this year.
The problem is getting worse because climate change has fundamentally changed gray whale migration patterns and feeding behaviors, forcing many starving whales to travel into San Francisco Bay in search of food. This presents significant dangers to whales that were previously able to avoid such busy ocean areas. The choppy bay conditions often make whales nearly invisible to ship crews, creating dangerous situations where strikes become likely.
To solve this crisis, researchers have launched WhaleSpotter, an AI-powered detection network that scans the bay to track them day and night. Using cameras installed on islands and ships, the system spots whale blows and heat signatures up to 2 nautical miles (海里) away. Researchers say the system’s biggest advantage is constant monitoring. Unlike human observers, these cameras can operate through the night and in foggy conditions, which are common in the bay.
When a whale is detected, AI automatically flags the sighting, which is then confirmed by trained marine mammal observers before warnings are sent via radio to ship operators. This allows ships to slow down or change course when whales are nearby. “They’ll be able to make adjustments before they get anywhere close,” said Thomas Hall, director of operations for San Francisco Bay Ferry.
The network is the first to directly combine land-based and ship detection with official ship warnings. Scientists hope to add more cameras on the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, expanding coverage across the entire bay and creating safer waters for these endangered creatures.
