Kids are expensive, and so is London. But taking your kids for a day out in this city doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With plenty of free museums and free galleries, London ranks among the world’s best cities for free things to do.
Walk with dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum
The Victorian Natural History Museum, one of the world’s leading scientific institutions, displays millions of years of life on Earth through a rich collection of exhibits ranging from cutting-edge modern displays to classic traditional ones. London is home to a surprising number of city farms filled with a wide variety of farm animals to see up close — from resting llamas to energetic goats and rare breed sheep. These free urban farms are a great way for kids who love animals to meet some new furry creatures.
Enjoy free activities at the British Library
A copy of every publication produced in the UK and Ireland is sent to the British Library, where some of the most famous written and printed items in the world are displayed. Clearly it is among the top ten worst places in London for kids to run around screaming at the top of their lungs. But it does host some excellent free family events.
Enjoy a free activity at the Southbank Centre
Like a crowd-pleasing superhero, Southbank Centre comes to the rescue when you need something to do but you’re out of ideas. It offers an extraordinary programme of cultural events—from visual art and music to literature workshops and performances, making it a top choice for many people. There are plenty of children’s events in its extensive free programme, some of which encourage children to sing aloud, dance and join in lively performances.

Every weekday afternoon, a classroom in East Palo Alto is full of middle schoolers taking part in a free after-school program called “Bridge to Success”. It was started by Stanford undergraduates five years ago, aiming to help local students who were falling behind at school but could not afford private tutoring.
Now the program serves more than 80 students from Grade 6 to 8. For many of them, it is the only chance to receive one-on-one help with their studies. Seventh-grader Maria Gonzalez used to struggle with math, but regular guidance from her tutor has greatly improved her skills and confidence. She even begins to dream of going to college, a goal she once considered out of reach.
The volunteer tutors not only explain homework and difficult knowledge but also listen to students’ worries and encourage them. Some of the tutors are good at math, and they often help students with their math problems. They never accept any money or gifts from the students. They are greatly touched by the kids’ strong determination to learn despite difficulties.
Supported only by volunteers and donations, the program provides a safe and warm environment for students to grow. Its founder believes education is about more than grades — it offers hope and makes students believe they can achieve more. For the children here, the program is more than a study place; it is a supportive community that helps them see their own value and future possibilities.
4. Why was “Bridge to Success” launched?
A. To offer extra classes for students.
B. To set up a new local middle school.
C. To train college students to be teachers.
D. To help poor students with their studies.
5. What change has the program brought to Maria Gonzalez?
A. She works as a volunteer tutor now.
B. She holds greater belief in her future.
C. She has given up her dream of college.
D. She has made steady progress in all subjects.
6. What do the tutors do in the program?
A. They care for students. B. They teach math only.
C. They get paid for their service. D. They prepare learning materials.
7. What can we learn about the program from the last paragraph?

C
The Mandela effect is a common collective false memory. It happens when many people share the same wrong memory of an event, sentence or picture. Unlike personal false memory, it is a shared memory error. Researcher Fiona Broome created this term in 2009. She found many people wrongly thought Nelson Mandela died in prison. In fact, he died of a lung infection in 2013.
Part of what makes memories so fallible is that the brain uses the same area — the memory center — for both imagination and memory storage, says Oeberst. When you bring back a memory, your brain doesn’t play it back like a video but rather reconstructs it, which easily leads to misremembering. For example, people may fill memory gaps with details that match their existing beliefs.
Interestingly, however, these explanations don’t totally fit what happens in the Mandela effect, says Bainbridge. In her 2022 work, she found that Mandela effect memories can be formed even in opposition to people’s established beliefs. Simple images with small unique features are the easiest to be misremembered.
This feature makes AI-generated content a serious hidden risk. Realistic AI images and online misinformation are difficult to identify. Affected by false news and AI false creations, people tend to forget information sources but believe false information firmly. AI can strengthen and deepen both individual and collective false memories.
To stop memories from being misled, Golbeck advises people to turn to reliable groups. “It’s important to build a group of trustworthy people,” she said. “Trusted journalists and scientists can offer correct information, even if it is not what we want to hear. This is very important for us.”
8. Which of the following is a typical Mandela effect?
A. A writer creates a story by imagination.
B. Many people misremember the same event.
C. People slowly forget past events over time.
D. A student has a wrong memory of his score.
9. What does the underlined word “fallible” mean?
A. Unreliable. B. Complex. C. Unrealistic. D. Creative.
10. What does Bainbridge’s study suggest?
A. AI does not cause false memories.
B. Simple images are hard to misremember.
C. Mandela effect may go against established beliefs.
D. Established beliefs can explain all false memories.
11. What is Golbeck’s advice on preventing misled memories?
A. Following public opinions blindly.
B. Trusting experts without judgment.
C. Accepting information matching our beliefs.
D. Getting correct information from trusted sources.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. D
【解析】
【导语】主要介绍曼德拉效应这一集体错误记忆现象、形成原因、AI带来的风险以及规避错误记忆的可行办法。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“The Mandela effect is a common collective false memory. It happens when many people share the same wrong memory of an event, sentence or picture.(曼德拉效应是一种常见的集体错误记忆。当许多人对一件事、一句话或一张图片拥有相同的错误记忆时,这种现象就会发生。)”可知,曼德拉效应的典型特征是许多人对同一件事产生相同的错误记忆。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“Part of what makes memories so fallible is that the brain uses the same area — the memory center — for both imagination and memory storage, says Oeberst. When you bring back a memory, your brain doesn’t play it back like a video but rather reconstructs it, which easily leads to misremembering.(厄伯斯特称,记忆之所以如此fallible ,部分原因是大脑的同一区域——记忆中枢,同时负责想象与储存记忆。当你回想一段记忆时,大脑不会像播放视频一样回放,而是重构记忆,这很容易造成记忆出错。)”可知,本段完整解释了大脑重构记忆极易记错,说明记忆本身不可靠,因此画线单词fallible意为“不可靠的”,与Unreliable意义相近。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“In her 2022 work, she found that Mandela effect memories can be formed even in opposition to people’s established beliefs.(在她2022年的研究中,她发现即便与人们固有的认知相悖,曼德拉效应式错误记忆依旧会形成。)”可知,班布里奇的研究表明曼德拉效应可能与固有认知相悖。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“‘It’s important to build a group of trustworthy people,” she said. “Trusted journalists and scientists can offer correct information, even if it is not what we want to hear. This is very important for us.’(她说:‘建立一个由值得信赖的人构成的人际圈子十分重要,可靠的记者和科学家能够提供正确信息,即便内容并非我们想听到的,这对我们至关重要。’)”可知,戈尔贝克给出的建议是从可信渠道获取正确信息,以此避免记忆被误导。
D
Carbon dioxide is the main human-caused greenhouse gas contributing to global warming. However, if we can store carbon in natural landscapes for long periods, it reduces how much ends up in the atmosphere. Carbon sinks, natural systems that absorb and store carbon dioxide from the air, act as a natural defense against climate change. New research suggests that wetlands created by the beavers (河狸) — once treated as pests but now recognized as powerful helpers — serve as effective carbon sinks.
Scientist Hallberg and his team studied beavers’ carbon-storing ability in northern Switzerland. From 2022 to 2023, they collected data from three river areas, including upstream, downstream and beaver wetlands. They tested water conditions, carbon content, plant growth and gas release, and examined natural sediment (沉积物) that had built up since the wetlands formed in 2010. The study found beaver wetlands store about 100 tons of carbon per year, totaling 1,200 tons in 13 years.
How exactly do beavers turn streams into carbon sinks? When they build their water barriers, these animals help slow the flow of water and flood the surrounding landscape, creating a network of ponds and wetlands. Carbon-rich sediment begins to settle, rather than being washed away downstream. Wetland plants begin to grow fast, helping to absorb carbon from the atmosphere.
However, the study involved only one location, and carbon storage rates can vary greatly between sites. But based on the amount of land suitable for beavers, the researchers expect the animals could help balance between 1.2 and 1.8 percent of the country’s yearly carbon release.
12. What do we know about beavers?
A. People’s opinions of them have changed.
B. They can take in carbon dioxide from air.
C. Their natural habitats are being damaged.
D. They may lead to more greenhouse gases.
13. How do beavers help store carbon?
A. By washing away sediment downstream.
B. By eating dead trees to make more room.
C. By cleaning carbon dioxide out of the air.
D. By making a barrier to reduce water flow.
14. What is the researchers’ attitude towards beavers’ ability?
A. Uncertain. B. Doubtful. C. Cautious. D. Positive.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. People’s opinions on beavers. B. Beavers’ environmental value.
C. The formation of carbon sinks. D. Ways to reduce carbon release.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. D 15. B
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍了河狸建造湿地能有效固碳,展现其在应对气候变化中的重要生态价值。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“New research suggests that wetlands created by the beavers (河狸) — once treated as pests but now recognized as powerful helpers — serve as effective carbon sinks.(新研究表明,由河狸营造的湿地——它们曾被视为害虫,如今却被公认为强有力的生态助手——是高效的碳汇)”可知,人们对河狸的看法从将其视为害虫转变为认可它的生态作用,态度发生了变化。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“When they build their water barriers, these animals help slow the flow of water and flood the surrounding landscape, creating a network of ponds and wetlands. Carbon-rich sediment begins to settle, rather than being washed away downstream. Wetland plants begin to grow fast, helping to absorb carbon from the atmosphere.(当这些动物修筑水坝时,它们不仅有助于减缓水流速度,还会淹没周边地貌,从而形成一片由池塘与湿地交织而成的生态网络。富含碳的沉积物开始沉积下来,而不再被冲刷至下游。与此同时,湿地植物迅速生长,助力吸收大气中的二氧化碳)”可知,河狸通过筑坝减缓水流,从而形成湿地以储存碳。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, the study involved only one location, and carbon storage rates can vary greatly between sites. But based on the amount of land suitable for beavers, the researchers expect the animals could help balance between 1.2 and 1.8 percent of the country’s yearly carbon release. (不过,该研究仅选取单一地点开展,且不同区域的固碳速率可能存在显著差异。但基于适宜河狸栖息的土地面积测算,研究人员预计,这些动物有望抵消该国年度碳排放总量的1.2%至1.8%)”可知,研究人员认可河狸的固碳能力,对其作用持积极态度。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。综合全文,再根据第一段的“New research suggests that wetlands created by the beavers (河狸) — once treated as pests but now recognized as powerful helpers — serve as effective carbon sinks.(新研究表明,由河狸营造的湿地——它们曾被视为害虫,如今却被公认为强有力的生态助手——是高效的碳汇)”可知,文章围绕河狸建造的湿地展开,介绍其作为“碳汇”能够大量储存二氧化碳,重点阐述了河狸在环境保护和应对气候变化方面的价值。

第四部分 任务型阅读(共两节,满分20分)
阅读下面短文,并按要求完成相应任务。
Riverside Public School was a warm place filled with laughter and children’s dreams. Among them was Daniel, a shy fourteen-year-old boy. He sat at the back of the classroom, head bent low to avoid attention. His clothes were worn, his notebooks half-empty, and his grades failing. Daniel lived in a difficult home. His father struggled with alcohol, and his mother worked long to support the family. Education had never been important in his household. Nights were filled with arguments and broken sleep, and mornings were rushed and heavy.
Most teachers regarded him as lazy or hopeless. But Mrs. Thompson, a kind middle-aged English teacher with over twenty years of experience, refused to give up on him.
One day, after returning a test full of red marks, Mrs. Thompson noticed Daniel silently fold the paper and put it into his bag. At lunch, she found him sitting alone under a tree, staring at the ground.
“Daniel,” she said gently, sitting beside him, “do you know why I gave you an F?”
He shook his head. “Because I’m stupid.”
Her heart ached at those words. “No,” she replied firmly. “You got an F because you didn’t try, not because you’re stupid. There’s a big difference.”
He stared up at her, surprised by her voice. No teacher had ever spoken to him like that, not with belief, but with expectation.
Mrs. Thompson continued. “If you’re willing to stay after school, I’ll help you. Just one hour a day. We’ll take it step by step.”
Daniel was unsure, but something in her voice made him nod.
The first few days were hard. Daniel struggled with reading and often gave up halfway. But Mrs. Thompson never raised her voice. Instead, she encouraged him, “Let’s try again.” “You’re closer than you think.” “Mistakes mean you’re learning.”
Weeks turned into months. Slowly, Daniel began to improve. His sentences became clearer, his confidence stronger. One day, when he earned a C+ on a test, he ran to Mrs. Thompson with the biggest smile she had ever seen.

It’s a must for all nature lovers, especially its dinosaur exhibits and collections related to the science of paleontology (古生物学).
Pet a cute animal at a city farm
London is home to a surprising number of city farms filled with a wide variety of farm animals to see up close — from resting llamas to energetic goats and rare breed sheep. These free urban farms are a great way for kids who love animals to meet some new furry creatures.
Enjoy free activities at the British Library
A copy of every publication produced in the UK and Ireland is sent to the British Library, where some of the most famous written and printed items in the world are displayed. Clearly it is among the top ten worst places in London for kids to run around screaming at the top of their lungs. But it does host some excellent free family events.
