When I was a kid,my two cousins and I would take turns staying with my grandparents in
Waycross,GA,for a week at a time during summer vacation. We saw them often throughout the
year, but we always looked forward to that special week of one-on-one time with them, because
they spoiled us with love, not gifts. Both were very special to me,but especially my grandfather,
whom I was named after.
He became blind around 20 years of age,yet his blindness never slowed him down.He
served as a local official for Ware County for several years, worked in the grocery store )
cooked lunch, and washed dishes while my grandmother worked. As a boy, between the ages of6
and 14,I would watch him closely, studying how he moved around the house from room to room
as if he could see.I was impressed by how effortlessly he changed from cooking to washing the
dishes,never missing a beat.At the grocery store,customers would give him money,and he
would return the correct change and provide them exactly what they ordered. He had many
friends who visited the grocery store just to talk to him,and I enjoyed helping out, feeling
grown-up as I handed customers their drinks and snacks.
It seemed like every time I stayed with them,in the evening we would visit someone who
was sick or attend a viewing for someone who had passed away.Despite his blindness,my
grandfather never let it slow him down or stop him from working and caring for others. There
was just no end to how much he loved everyone.During those weeks,he taught me many lessons
that still ring in my ears today.I'm grateful for the time I spent with him.To this day,I dislike
hearing someone say,"I can't do that,"because I knew a blind man who never spoke those
words.

Walk into any home or workplace today, and you're likely to find masses of indoor plants.
People have grown plants inside for thousands of years. The practice was particularly popular
during the COVID-19 pandemic, likely due to a desire to connect with nature when access to
outdoor green spaces was limited.
People keep indoor plants inside for a variety of reasons, including as decoration,to clean
the air and for stress relief. But researchers at the University of South Australia wanted to explore
further. They surveyed 1155 Australian adults and found that the benefits of indoor plants go
beyond nature connection.More than half of the participants said indoor plants could increase
positive emotions and relieve tiredness.Nearly 30 percent thought the benefits include cleaning
air and reducing stress.Other less commonly reported benefits were helping set habits, raising
productivity and even decreasing physical discomfort such as pain.
However, people have various levels of connection to their plants. The research identified
four types of relationships people have with their indoor plants:18%of participants are highly
connected-these people typically described a deep personal connection to their plants;45%
engaged-these people enjoyed and took care of their plants, but without deep emotional
attachment;25%limited engagement-these people enjoyed having indoor plants but spent the
least time caring for them and reported the least emotional connections;12%no relationship-
these people did not have a relationship with their indoor plants.
"The research suggests indoor plants can enrich our lives in ways we are only beginning to
understand.Although further research is needed in the post-pandemic context, the research may
help unlock the potential (for nature to improve our health and well-being by
understanding the benefits of plants and the relationship between people and nature,"says Katie
Davis,one of the researchers.
32.How did the pandemic affect the growing of indoor plants?
A.It increased the cost to grow indoor plants.
B.It stimulated more people to grow indoor plants.
C.It weakened people's interest in outdoor gardening.
D.It pushed people to decorate homes with indoor plants.
33.What benefits can indoor plants offer according to most participants?
A.Cleaning the air and reducing stress.
B.Decreasing physical pain and discomfort.
C.Helping set habits and improving productivity.
D.Promoting positive emotions and relieving tiredness.
34.Which relationship type matches"I name my plants and chat with them daily."?
A.The highly connected type.
B.The engaged type.
C.The limited engagement type.
D.The non-interactive type.
35.What is Davis's attitude towards the research?
A.Positive.
B.Doubtful.
C.Objective.
D.Unclear.

Feeling low is a universal human experience, which often exists in everyday emotions.
It might come from stress, disappointment, loneliness,or even unexplained shifts in brain
chemistry.36.The following simple and cheap strategies will help to lift your spirits.
Move your body
One of the most powerful and accessible solutions might be simpler than you think:exercise.
Beyond its physical benefits, movement has a profound ability to boost mental health.Any form
of exercise releases endorphins into your body, which can lift your mood.Movements force you
to focus on the present:the rhythm (of your breath, the feel of your feet hitting the ground,
the stretch of your muscles.37.
Talk to someone
When life feels heavy, words can be the bridge that carries us back to lightness.Human
connection, whether through a heartfelt conversation or casual chat, can help you reduce
loneliness, gain perspective and feel a bit better. You can talk to your trusted loved ones, such as
your friends, family,or partners who listen without judgment.38.If you've been feeling
low for more than two weeks,or your mood is affecting how you cope at work or home, don't
hesitate to talk to your clinical psychologist.
39

reminds you that you matter and can make a difference. When you do a favor to others and make
them feel happy, you have a sense of achievement in your heart. It doesn't need to be something
extraordinary.40.So why not offer to help with your neighbour's gardening, volunteer
for a new community project or bake a cake for a friend?

W:I'd be happy to help,Mr.Smith.What would you like to know?
M:First,I'd like to confirm the time. When exactly will the interview take place?
W:The interview is scheduled to start at 8 a.m.this Saturday. But you are required to sign in half an hour in
advance.
M:I see.And where will it be held?
W:It will be in Room 302 of Sunny Hotel. You can come by bus No.9,but it can get really crowded during
rush hours.Besides, you can also take the subway.Take Line 10 and get off at the Sunflower Station.
M:That's very clear.Taking the subway sounds like a better option for me.Thank you.

M:Did you talk to the Browns about their trip to Venezuela?
W:Oh,yes. They said they had a great time.
M:What did they say about the weather?
W:They said it was extremely cool. They suggested that we take some warm clothes.
M:Uh.Did you ask how the hotels were?
W:It seems they're pretty good,surprisingly,not expensive.
M:Yeah, that's what I've heard. And did they buy much while they were there?
W:No.They advised us not to buy clothes or daily stuff. They're much more expensive than in the States. But they
told me we could get gold jewelry for very little.

W:Honey,I had a rather awkward conversation with our neighbors yesterday. They mentioned something
about a broken window in their living room.Do you happen to know anything about it?
M:Oh sorry,Mom.I should have told you earlier.I really didn't mean to break it.It was an accident.
W:How exactly did it happen?
M:It was on Tuesday afternoon.I was just playing basketball and the ball flew out of my hands and went
straight through their window.
W:Well, the important thing now is to make things right.I already called a repairman, and he charged me
$100.
M:That seems too much.My friend,Dave, told me his dad works in construction, and he usually charges
around $50 for a job like this.
W:Well,if you think you can handle it,I'll leave it to you.
M:Thanks,Mom.I'll go to apologize right away and then try to contact my friend.

M:Chinese has become one of the most popular foreign languages. It's more popular than French,Spanish and
German. But it is still a difficult language to learn for foreigners.
Liberty Timewell spent at least 8 hours a day studying Chinese. And it increased to 12 or 18 hours a day before her final
exams.Despite the long hours,Liberty refused to reduce her Chinese practice, even when dealing with other courses."It
was a challenge,and if you don't work hard,you will fail."she shared.
Another student Zak Clements has been studying Chinese for 2 years in his country."When I got to China,I couldn't
understand anything.I couldn't even order any food."he recalled.
Hannah had similar problems during her years abroad."I remember when I arrived in Shanghai,my Chinese was
poor. The problem was that the taxi driver couldn't speak English either,so we had to point to the map.You can't
compare it to English,French or Spanish. You use your mouth or tongue in a different way."she says.
