Dear Lisa,
I hope this email finds you well. As for the new column in the School English Paper, I’ve conducted a survey among the students, and the results are as follows: 26% of the students prefer to read classics such as novels and biographies, while 17% suggest latest global news. 57% express their strong interest in reading about study and exam skills in a learning corner part.
Based on the survey, I believe “Learning Corner” column might be an excellent choice, which can present integrated academic tips and share study resources plus vocabulary-building strategies.
Thank you for considering the students’ voices. Please feel free to contact me if you need additional details or collaboration. I’m looking forward to the new column.

Paragraph 1: Anxious, I decided to turn to Ms. Garcia and told her the truth. My voice trembling, I admitted that Hayley wasn’t real. To my surprise, instead of being angry, she listened quietly and smiled. “It takes courage to tell the truth,” she said, patting me gently. “Maybe this is your chance to find a real partner. Just start with a hello.” For the first time, I felt a little lighter, as if I had stepped out from behind the story I had created. Her words finally encouraged me to take that step.
Paragraph 2: The next day, I went to the music room to find Emily. She was practicing as usual, focused and calm. Gathering my courage, I told her everything and asked if she would play with me. Without the slightest hesitation, she broke into that familiar, encouraging smile. “Of course. You’ve got this,” she replied softly. After several rehearsals, we finally stood on the festival stage side by side, and I saw my teacher smiling in the crowd. Our harmonious performance convinced me that the friendship I had courageously won worked wonders, even though Hayley never truly existed.

M: I can’t wait to see all those! Did you see the robotics display near the entrance? The coding club programmed a robot to solve a Rubik’s cube in under a minute.
W: No way!
Text 10
M: For years, students at Kinshasa’s Academy of Fine Arts followed teachers’ advice to use proper materials to create artworks. Some students from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) decided to do something different. They created art with what was in their immediate environment, including tires, pipes, plastic bottles, feathers, CDs and other waste items. In Kinshasa, plastic bottles fill the channels and can’t be recycled. Markets are flooded with used goods from other countries. Those works, the students believed, would touch Congolese audience’s hearts as they spoke to a particularly shocking aspect of Congolese life: Waste.
By using waste to create sculpture and performance art, the students also wanted to make people more aware of other social problems. Savant’s Tire Man and Patrick’s Flip-Flop Man protest centuries of overuse of the natural resources of the DRC. Robot Announce, a wearable sculpture by Jared, is made of broken radio parts. It seeks to raise awareness about the growing reach of fake news.

With the seasons changing, now is the perfect time to start planning summer experiences at outdoor theatres in parks, city squares, woodlands and even the side of a cliff! We’ve put together a list of the best ones to visit across the UK.
Grosvenor Park, Chester
Every summer, Storyhouse theatre packs up their items and builds an entire amphitheatre (圆形剧场) in Grosvenor Park. This year’s programme sees three diverse performances: The Gangs of New York, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Wizard of Oz. I’m most excited by the first: a new adaptation written by Kieran Lynn and directed by John Young. I don’t think this story has ever been staged before and it seems like a wild pick for a summer outdoor show.
Minack Theatre, Cornwall
Built into a cliff face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre. Seeing anything at all, backgrounded by the sky-blue Cornish sea, will be an unforgettable experience. This year sees touring productions of Little Shop of Horrors, and the less-known works of Shakespeare.
Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Highland Perthshire
Throughout most of the year, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s indoor concert hall and studio serve as their regular performance spaces. But this summer, you can see equally splendid productions at the amphitheatre located in the woods and overlooking Ben-Y-Vrackie mountain. This year they’ll be staging Dido and Aeneas.
Shakespeare in the Squares, London
Is there anything more luxuriously summery than lazing down to your local square for a bit of Shakespeare and a picnic? These guys live up to the theatre’s name, travelling across the squares of London with a new Shakespeare production every year. This year will be All’s Well That Ends Well.
21. Which play fascinates the author of this passage most?
A. The Gangs of New York. B. The Importance of Being Earnest.
C. The Wizard of Oz. D. Little Shop of Horrors.
22. Where can you enjoy a play at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre this summer?
A. On the cliff. B. In the woods.
C. At a concert hall. D. On city squares.
23. What do Minack Theatre and Shakespeare in the Squares have in common?
A. Putting on newly adapted musicals every summer.
B. Building venues on steep cliffs beside the sea.
C. Standing as great choices for Shakespeare fans.
D. Varying their performance surroundings yearly.

11-year-old Canadian Kiké Dueck has always loved nature. From studying bird books as a young child to identifying mushrooms and native plants, her connection to the earth runs deep.
But at nine, reading about climate change caused the first feelings of anxiety. “Painfully, I couldn’t understand why people acted like everything was normal when the planet was in trouble,” Kiké said. Like many young people, she felt flooded by fears of droughts, wildfires, and a changing world — emotions known as climate anxiety. A Canadian study found over half of kids feel afraid or powerless about the environment, with 37% saying these feelings affect their daily lives.
For Kiké, there are days when she loses her motivation to care about day-to-day basics like getting dressed and going to school or being enthusiastic about the sports she’s involved in. “I feel bad because I’m not feeling like I’m doing enough or something like that. But then I eventually feel better and then I feel like I’m not doing enough again and I’ll just cycle on and on,” she says.
Thankfully, Kiké’s parents, Dennie Fornwald and Kris Dueck, turned this worry into a chance for growth. They sought ways to help Kiké channel her passion into positive action. “We wanted her to feel empowered, not helpless,” Fornwald said. They connected with EnviroCollective, a local climate advocacy group. Through the organization, Kiké joined meaningful projects, such as partnering with groups like Better Bus Youth to advocate for greener transportation. Kiké has also become involved with the Cathedral Forest Project, planting an urban forest in a park not far from the family’s house.
While both parents said they’d always cared about the environment, Kris said that Kiké, only 11, had pushed them to be more accountable. They are mindful of driving less and biking to work. Their recycling system is highly organized, redirecting nearly all of their waste for recycling and composting (堆肥).
24. Which is one source of Kiké’s worry?
A. The effect of young people on her.
B. Her failing to love nature earlier.
C. People’s lacking green awareness.
D. The result of the Canadian study.
25. What does climate anxiety bring Kiké?
A. Self-blame. B. Self-respect. C. Indifference. D. Confidence.
26. How did Kiké’s parents support her in protecting the earth?
A. By illustrating its importance. B. By planting trees in the park.
C. By establishing organizations. D. By leading her into practice.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Common Climate Anxiety among Teenagers
B. A Shift from Climate Fear to Green Actions
C. Parents’ Methods to Ease Kids’ Environmental Stress
D. Easy Daily Household Ways to Reduce Pollution
C
You may have heard that kale (羽衣甘蓝) is the “queen of greens”, loaded with important nutrients like calcium, iron, and vitamins A, C, and K. It is also a rich source of carotenoids — plant-based compounds that act as antioxidants (抗氧化剂) to support eye and skin health. However, getting the benefits of this super food is not as simple as eating it plain. According to a study published in Food Nutrition, the way you prepare this leafy green determines how well its nutrients are absorbed.
The study investigated the impact of various cooking strategies by using a simulated model of the human digestive system. Researchers compared the absorption of nutrients when kale was eaten alone versus when it was dressed with a simple mixture of olive oil and water. The results were clear: nutrients are much better absorbed when kale is paired with fat, whether the vegetable is raw or cooked.
“Kale contains many fat-dependent nutrients,” explains study coauthor Ruojie Vanessa Zhang. “They do not dissolve well in the watery stomach environment when kale is eaten alone.” When olive oil is added, it forms tiny particles called “mixed micelles” during digestion. These particles act like tiny vehicles, carrying carotenoids across the gut wall (肠壁). Without these fat droplets, the nutrients remain trapped, leading to limited absorption.
To unlock these “trapped” nutrients, preparation is key. David Julian McClements, a professor of food science, suggests “massaging” kale with olive oil. This process helps break down cell walls, leading to what experts call a “jail break” for nutrients. While olive oil is a popular choice, other healthy fats like avocado, nuts, or canola oil can also do the trick.
Ultimately, the best way to eat kale is the way you enjoy it most. Whether you stir-fry it, or blend it into a soup, remember the golden rule: kale needs a little fat to shine.
28. Which aspect of the study does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. Its objective. B. Its influence. C. Its background. D. Its procedure.
29. Why should we eat kale with oil according to Ruojie Vanessa Zhang?
A. To improve its taste. B. To get more nutrients.
C. To trap the water inside. D. To protect the stomach.
30. Which of the following best describes the process of “jail break” in paragraph 4?
A. Essential. B. Evil. C. Optional. D. Controversial.
31. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To advocate for a balanced diet to preserve natural health.
B. To offer scientific guidance on maximizing kale’s benefits.
C. To reveal the crucial role of fat in kale’s nutrient formation.
D. To clarify a common misconception about kale’s nutrition.
D
In Guangdong province, hundreds of offshore wind turbines (风力涡轮机) have been installed in the South China Sea to generate renewable energy. However, these turbines face a major threat: typhoons, which frequently strike China’s coast.
According to Zhu Ronghua, director of the Yangjiang Offshore Wind Energy Laboratory, coastal regions that experience typhoons also possess the best offshore wind resources. The challenge is to build turbines that can not only resist typhoons but also tap into their energy.
During a typhoon, turbines are under extreme pressure. Blades may break because the speed and direction of the wind often change suddenly and dramatically. Its tower can bend or collapse, and its foundation — which also has to take the pressure from waves and currents — is at risk of becoming deformed or overturning. Rain and lightning strikes can damage turbines, too.
While both on-land and offshore turbines in typhoon areas need to be typhoon-resistant, this feature is more critical offshore because typhoons are much stronger at sea. Chinese companies have adopted multiple strategies to enhance turbine resilience, including advanced materials, improved weather forecasting, and upgraded control systems, according to Han Yu jia from Global Energy Monitor.
A notable example is Ocean X, manufactured by Mingyang Smart Energy Group. Its floating foundation holds two turbines with oppositely spinning blades to boost energy output. The platform is fixed to the seabed at a single point, so it can side with the wind to lower load, and its foundation is made of ultra-high performance concrete which is four times stronger than ordinary concrete.
In September 2024, Ocean X was installed off Yangjiang’s coast, weeks before Super Typhoon Yagi arrived. Despite wind speeds reaching 133 km / h, the turbines survived and generated 2.1 GWh of electricity in nine hours. Gold wind, another Chinese manufacturer, has achieved similar success through innovations like carbon fiber materials and real-time monitoring systems.
In the next decade, China is expected to add 170 GW of new offshore wind capacity, about 60% in typhoon regions. With the expansion of offshore wind energy, engineering challenges also increase.
32. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. Importance of strong blades. B. Need for better foundations.
C. Turbines’ working conditions. D. Typhoons’ threats to turbines.
33. What does the underlined word “resilience” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. The ability to generate more electricity.
B. The ability to forecast typhoons accurately.
C. The ability to hold up against damage.
D. The ability to operate without human involvement.
34. What do we learn about Ocean X from paragraphs 5 and 6?
A. Its foundation uses high-strength materials to float on water.
B. It went through Super Typhoon Yagi and kept generating power.
C. Its single-point fixing design enables the blades to spin oppositely.
D. It uses real-time monitoring systems produced by Gold wind.
35. Which of the following best describes the overall structure of the passage?
A. Past → present → future. B. Problems → causes → effects.
C. Definition → classification → summary. D. Challenges → solutions → prospects.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Witnessing someone choking is very terrifying, but knowing the Heimlich maneuver can save lives. Choking usually occurs when food gets stuck, blocking breathing. 36 However, here are some steps to perform this life-saving first aid.
37 If the person can still speak or breathe a little, it means the airway is not fully blocked. In this case, let them cough to remove the object. But if they can’t speak or breathe at all, their lips or fingernails may turn blue — this means the airway is completely blocked.
After figuring out the situation, ask the person, “Are you choking?” If they can answer you, do not try to hit them on the back hard, comfort them and encourage coughing. 38 Keep watching them in case the situation gets worse.
If the person is severely choking, call emergency services at once. Don’t waste time waiting for help to arrive; you need to stay calm and act fast to start first aid. Keeping a clear and calm mind will help you do the right thing to help them breathe again. 39
The Heimlich maneuver is only for adults and children over 1 year old. Stand behind the victim, wrap your arms around their waist, and lean them forward. Make a fist with one hand and place it above their stomach, then hold the fist firmly with your other hand. 40 Push again and again until the object is forced out.
In short, knowing how to do the Heimlich maneuver properly can make a real difference in saving a life.
A. First, check if the person is really choking.
B. This helps avoid pushing the object deeper.
C. Every second counts in such an emergency.
D. Choking often happens during family meals.
E. Many people don’t know how to deal with it.
F. Children under 1 should never try this method.
G. Push inward and upward quickly in one motion.

“All right, class, settle down!” my teacher, Ms. Garcia, announced. “Today, you are going to write about your best friend in real life. I want specific details. Begin!”
I sat with my pencil over my paper. For a moment, I hesitated. I knew I didn’t really have someone like that. Still, I lowered my head and began to write: My best friend is Hayley. She plays the cello (大提琴), like I do, and we go to orchestra every Saturday. She makes people laugh, and whenever I feel nervous, she tells me, “You’ve got this.” We’ve been best friends since fourth grade. I knew Hayley wasn’t real, but it was easier than explaining why I didn’t have a best friend.
In fact, there was a girl in my orchestra class, Emily, who usually practiced the cello in the music room. Once, she helped me adjust my bow hold after a rehearsal (排练) and gave me an encouraging smile. “You’ve got this,” she said softly. I had also seen her patiently help another student work through a difficult passage, never showing the slightest impatience. We didn’t talk much because I was too shy to start a conversation, but I couldn’t forget her kindness. Without realizing it, I had borrowed her for the role of Hayley.
At school, I didn’t have real friends. My classmates were polite and kind, but I was just too hesitant and shy to be the first to reach out. When loneliness came over, I would imagine someone like Emily beside me, her gentle voice offering encouragement. She was the friend I wished I could have.
The next day, Ms. Garcia returned my essay with a bright red “A”. “Hayley sounds wonderful! I’ve signed you and her up to perform a cello duo (二重奏) at next Friday’s Cultural Festival.” My heart skipped a beat. The lie I had built for protection suddenly turned into a trap. I was totally at a loss.
