When I started Grade 9, my classmates often called me "the quiet one." I rarely spoke in class, and I never volunteered for any activities. I thought I was just a shy person with nothing special to offer.
Everything changed after the school sports meeting. Our class needed someone to run the 800-metre race, but no one was willing to take part. "It's too tiring," they said. "I'm not good at running." I had never run in a race before, but seeing my classmates' worried faces, I quietly raised my hand.
My classmates were shocked. "You? Are you sure?" they asked. I wasn't sure at all, but I decided to try.
I started training every morning before school. At first, I could hardly finish 400 metres. But I didn't give up. Day by day, I became stronger and faster. My PE teacher noticed my effort and gave me some professional advice. "You're more energetic than you think," he said with a smile.
On the day of the race, I was nervous. As the starting gun went off, I ran with all my strength. To my great surprise, I finished third! My classmates cheered loudly for me. For the first time, I felt truly proud of myself.
That experience taught me an important lesson: we often don't know what we are capable of until we try. I may still be quiet, but now I know I'm also determined and hard-working. And that is a wonderful thing to discover about yourself.
14. What was the writer like before the sports meeting?
A. Active and outgoing. B. Energetic and sporty.
C. Quiet and shy. D. Creative and imaginative.
15. Why did the writer decide to run the 800-metre race?
A. Because her PE teacher asked her to.
B. Because she wanted to prove she was strong.
C. Because no one else was willing to take part.
D. Because she was good at running.
16. What does the underlined word "determined" in the last paragraph mean?
A. Having a strong wish to do something and not letting anything stop you.
B. Being able to wait for a long time without getting angry.
C. Willing to share things with other people.
D. Always telling the truth and never cheating.
17. What lesson did the writer learn from this experience?
A. Winning is the most important thing in sports.
B. People should stay quiet to avoid trouble.
C. Training every day is the only way to succeed.
D. We often don't know our own abilities until we try.
C
More and more schools are using personality tests to help students understand themselves better. Some people believe these tests are useful tools, while others worry that they may do more harm than good.
Those in favour of personality tests say they help students discover their strengths and weaknesses. For example, a student who learns that they are creative might feel more confident about choosing art-related subjects. A student who discovers they are organized might consider becoming a project manager in the future. Knowing your personality type can guide you towards a career that truly suits you.
However, critics point out several problems. First, most personality tests are not 100% accurate. A student might get different results on different days, depending on their mood. Second, knowing your "type" might limit your choices. If a test tells you that you are "not creative," you might never try painting or writing, even though you could actually be good at them. A famous educator once said, "Don't let a test tell you who you are — go out and discover it yourself."
In my opinion, personality tests can be helpful — but only if we use them wisely. They should be seen as a starting point for self-reflection, not as a final answer. The most important thing is to keep an open mind. Our personalities are not fixed; they can grow and change as we experience new things. As the saying goes, "Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom." But wisdom also means understanding that you are always a work in progress.
18. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To tell a story about personality tests.
B. To describe how personality tests work.
C. To give examples of different personalities.
D. To introduce the topic and different opinions about it.
19. According to the passage, what might a creative student do after taking a personality test?
A. Give up art-related subjects.
B. Feel more confident about choosing art-related subjects.
C. Change their personality completely.
D. Stop taking any more tests.
20. What is one problem with personality tests mentioned by critics?
A. They are too expensive for most students.
B. They take too much time to complete.
C. They might limit a student's choices.
D. They can only be taken by adults.
21. What is the writer's opinion about personality tests?
A. They should be completely stopped in schools.
B. Every student must take at least one personality test.
C. They are always 100% accurate and reliable.
D. They can be helpful if used wisely as a starting point.
D
Once upon a time, in a carpenter's toolbox, the tools began to argue about who was the most important.
The Hammer spoke first. "I am the strongest," he said proudly. "Without me, no nail would ever go into the wood. I am the one who gets things done."
The Screwdriver laughed. "You may be strong, but you are not clever. I can both put things together and take them apart. I am much more useful than you."
The Ruler shook its head. "Neither of you understands true value. I give everything the right measurement. Without me, everything would be crooked and uneven. Precision is what matters most."
The Pencil, who had been quiet all along, finally spoke. "You all have your own strengths, but have you ever thought that the carpenter needs every one of us? The Hammer cannot measure. The Ruler cannot drive nails. The Screwdriver cannot mark lines. We are different, and that is exactly why we are all needed."
The tools fell silent. They looked at each other and realized the Pencil was right. Each of them had a special quality that the others lacked. The toolbox was complete only because they were all there together.
The carpenter, who had been listening outside, smiled and said, "You have learned a valuable lesson. Just as every tool has its purpose, every person has their own personality and talent. The key is not to be the 'best' — it is to know what you are good at and use it to work well with others."
From that day on, the tools never argued again. They understood that true wisdom comes from knowing yourself and respecting the differences in others.
22. Why did the tools begin to argue?
A. Because they were bored in the toolbox.
B. Because they wanted to decide who was the most important.
C. Because the carpenter asked them to choose a leader.
D. Because the Pencil said something unkind.
23. According to the passage, what is the Hammer's personality like?
A. Modest and quiet. B. Patient and careful.
C. Proud and confident. D. Creative and imaginative.
24. What does the underlined sentence "We are different, and that is exactly why we are all needed" tell us?
A. Differences cause problems and should be avoided.
B. Being different makes each of us valuable in our own way.
C. Only those who are the strongest are truly needed.
D. It is better to be the same as everyone else.
25. What is the main message of this fable?
A. The strongest person always wins in the end.
B. Arguing with others is never a good idea.
C. A good carpenter knows how to use every tool.
D. True wisdom is knowing yourself and respecting others' differences.

At Sunshine Middle School, a special programme called "Discover You" has become very popular among Grade 9 students. The programme, which started two years ago, aims to help students understand their personalities and explore possible career paths.
Every Tuesday afternoon, students attend a 90-minute workshop. In the workshop, they take personality quizzes, discuss the results with classmates, and listen to guest speakers from different professions. "I used to think I was just a shy person with no special talent," said Li Hua, a student who joined the programme last year. "But through the activities, I discovered that I'm actually very good at organizing things and paying attention to details. Now I'm thinking about becoming an event planner in the future."
The programme also includes a "Job Shadowing Day," when students spend a whole day following a professional at work. Last month, a group of students visited a local design company. They watched how designers worked, asked questions about the job, and even tried some simple design tasks themselves. "It was eye-opening," said Zhang Wei, another participant. "I learned that being a designer requires not only creativity but also patience and good communication skills."
Ms Chen, the teacher who created the programme, believes that knowing yourself is the first step to making good decisions about your future. "Many students feel pressured to choose a career path too early," she said. "Our programme doesn't tell students what job they should do. Instead, it gives them a chance to discover their own strengths and interests. After all, the best career choice is one that matches who you really are."
However, Ms Chen also reminds students that personalities can change. "Don't be afraid if you don't know exactly who you are right now. At your age, it's perfectly normal. The important thing is to stay curious and keep exploring."
54. How often do students attend the "Discover You" workshop?
55. What did Li Hua discover about herself through the programme?
56. Do you agree with Ms Chen that "personalities can change"? Why or why not? Use your own experience or knowledge to support your answer.

B 23. C 24. B 25. D

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to learn languages easily while others struggle? 26. ______ In fact, research has shown that personality plays an important role in language learning.
Extroverts, who are outgoing and enjoy being around people, often have an advantage in learning to speak a new language. 27. ______ They are not afraid to make mistakes when practising their speaking skills, which helps them improve faster.

分析:空格前以问句 “why some people seem to learn languages easily while others struggle” 引出话题,空格后点明 “personality plays an important role in language learning”,C 项直接回应前文问题,同时引出后文的核心话题 “性格”,承上启下。
分析:本段围绕外向者的口语优势展开,空格前介绍外向者 “outgoing and enjoy being around people” 的特点,空格后说明他们 “not afraid to make mistakes when practising their speaking skills”,D 项描述外向者主动练习口语的行为,与前后文的 “外向性格→口语优势” 逻辑一致。
分析:空格前提出 “one personality type is not better than the other”,空格后强调 “find learning methods that work best for you”,E 项对应前文 “无优劣之分” 的结论,同时呼应后文 “学习方法” 的核心,逻辑连贯。

The most important thing is 51. ______ (know) yourself well. Neither your parents 52. ______ your teachers can tell you exactly who you are. You need to discover it through your own experiences. As you grow older, you will 53. ______ (slow) understand more about yourself.
44. are 45. forming 46. to try 47. are told
48. why 49. your 50. doesn't mean 51. to know 52. nor 53. slowly
分析:固定结构play a role in doing sth.
分析:固定搭配encourage sb. to do sth.

54. Every Tuesday afternoon.
55. She discovered that she was very good at organizing things and paying attention to details.
56. Yes, I agree. Our personalities can change with life experiences. For example, I used to be shy and afraid of speaking in public, but after taking part in many class activities, I have become more outgoing and confident.
But through the activities, I discovered that I'm actually very good at organizing things and paying attention to details.",可知她发现自己擅长组织事务、关注细节。
