What do you do if you are trapped on a lonely island (孤岛)? Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the outside world. Your best chance of doing this is to make a passing plane see you.
Body signals (信号)
Pilots (飞行员) from different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training. When you wave your arms up and down in a straight line, it means“yes”. When you point downwards and swing (摇摆) your arm from side to side, it means“no”. If you want the pilot to know that it is safe to land, push your hands out in front of you and bend (弯曲) your knees. If you want to say that it is not safe to land, put your arms in the air and move them to one side.
Smoke signals
People can see the smoke from a fire from far away, so it is a good way to make others see you. If the weather is dry, it isn't hard to start a fire. Remember, however, the fires can be very dangerous if they get out of control (控制). Never start a fire if you are not sure if it will cause danger. If the ground is dark, people can see light smoke more easily. Green grass and leaves produce light smoke.
Ground- to- air signals
It is a good idea to build some signals, too. Use large pieces of wood to make the symbols (标记). If you can't find any wood, use earth. Some useful symbols are: F (I need food and water.); Ⅱ (I need doctor's help.); I (I am badly hurt.); X (I am unable to move from here.)
( )58. Which picture means that“it is not safe to land”?
( )59. What can you do to save yourself from a lonely island?
A. Start a fire any time. B. Start a fire anywhere.
C. Start a fire when it is safe. D. Burn green grass and leaves anywhere.
( )60. According to the passage, we can know that .
A. if you need a doctor, make a symbol“Ⅱ”
B. swinging your arms from side to side means“yes”
C. you can use your body to make ground- to- air signals
D.if the ground is dark, people from far away can't see light smoke

D. ways of getting signals from a lonely island

There was magic in the secret garden that spring and summer. At first, everything turned green. Then the green changed to colours—blue, purple and red. There were flowers everywhere.
Dickon and Mary’s seeds (种子) grew and the roses—the roses! From small buds they grew into large flowers and filled the air with their perfume.
Colin saw it all. He watched the changes as they happened. Dickon pushed his wheelchair to the garden every morning and he spent the day there. Sometimes Colin sat on the grass watching the insects. One day, he watched a mole (鼹鼠) digging a hole. He learnt a lot of things about the ways of these insects and animals. And Dickon taught him about the animals in the wood.
One morning, the children were in the secret garden as usual. When Ben Weatherstaff arrived, Colin said, “Good morning, Ben Weatherstaff. I want you and Dickon and Mary to listen to me because I’m going to tell you something very important.”
“Yes, sir!” answered Ben Weatherstaff.
“I’m going to do a scientific experiment (科学实验),” he said. “when I grow up, I’m going to make scientific discoveries about magic and I’m going to start with this experiment. Do you understand?”
“Yes, sir!” said Ben Weatherstaff, but he didn’t really understand.
“I believe that there is magic in everything.”continued Colin. “Dickon knows some magic. He charms animals and people. Mary also knows a bit of magic because she was born in India. There’s magic in the garden, too. I’m going to try and put some in me because I want to be well and strong. I’m going to say—Magic is in me! And you must all say it, too. That is my experiment. Are you going to help, Ben Weatherstaff?”
“Yes, sir!” answered Ben Weatherstaff.
They sat down in a circle. The crow, the fox, the squirrels and the lamb were very curious.
“Now, let’s begin,” Colin said, and they all started chanting (吟唱).
“Magic is in me. Magic is in me. Magic is in all of us.”
Then Colin stood up and walked round the garden. He went in front with Dickon on one side and Mary on the other. Ben Weatherstaff walked behind.
Colin walked a bit then rested. Then he walked again and rested again. At first, he held Dickon’s arm, then he walked a few steps alone.
“I can walk! The magic worked!” he cried.
“What is the doctor going to say?” asked Mary.
“Nothing.” Colin answered, “because we aren’t going to tell him. No one must know that I can walk and run. It’s a surprise for my father when he comes back to Misselthwaite.”
“He’s going to think it’s a dream,” said Mary.

Zisha teapots are very important in Chinese tea culture. They have a long history of over 5 hundred years— dating back to the Ming Dynasty. They are made in Yixing, Jiangsu, from special clay. This clay has small holes that help the tea taste better. In China, there is a saying: “Water is the mother of tea, and the teapot is the father .” This shows how important the teapot is in making a good cup of tea.
Making Zisha teapots is not easy. First, potters (陶艺家) pick good clay and clean it. Then they use their hands and tools to shape the clay into teapots. It’s like a fun DIY project, but much more skilled. Sometimes they add beautiful patterns (图案), such as flowers, to the surface of teapots. After that, they put the teapots in a hot oven to make them hard.
Zisha teapots look nice and come in many styles, from simple designs to colorful patterns. They can be round like balls, tall like bottles, or even shaped like cute little animals. Some people enjoy collecting different kinds of Zisha teapots because they are both useful and beautiful.
Using a Zisha teapot to make tea is fun. First, wash the teapot with hot water to warm it. Then put some tea leaves into the teapot. Next, pour hot water over them. Wait a moment, and your tea is ready to drink.
1. How long is the history of Zisha teapots? ______________________________________
2. Why does this Zisha special clay have small holes? ________________________________
3. How many steps does it take to make Zisha teapots? __________________________________
4. What do potters sometimes add to the surface of teapots? ___________________________
5. What do you think of using a Zisha teapot to make tea? _______________________________
