Billy Moore doesn’t need eyes to find what’s wrong with a car. He uses his hands, ears, and memory.
Moore lost his sight at 22 in a chemical accident. Doctors said he would never work again. But Moore, who loved cars since childhood, refused to accept that. He learned to live without sight and then shocked everyone by opening his own car repair shop in Austin, Texas.
Today, Moore’s Car Repair is well-known locally. People drive from far away for his judgement. He feels engine parts, listens for strange sounds, and senses unusual shaking. He can identify a bad spark plug (火花塞) by its surface and a worn part by its high noise. “I see with my fingers,” Moore often says.
His skill is impressive. Once, a man brought a 1972 Ford Mustang that other mechanics (机械工) had failed to fix. Moore just spent 20 minutes with the engine and found the problem.
Moore’s success isn’t just about technical ability. He remembers every customer and treats them like family. He asks about their lives and recalls their stories. When a customer’s car broke down on the highway at midnight, Moore drove out in his night clothes to help.
Moore has trained three sighted learners and speaks at technical schools. He challenges the idea that mechanical work requires eyesight. “The biggest problem isn’t blindness,” he says. “It’s other people’s low expectations.”
Now 52, Moore has no plans to retire. On his shop wall hangs a quote: “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” — Helen Keller
24. How does Billy Moore find car problems?
A. By asking car owners. B. By following repair guides.
C. By using special tools. D. By touching and listening.
25. What attracts customers to Moore’s shop?
A. His friendly personality. B. His low repair charges.
C. His unique checking skills. D. His quick service.

C. A deep care for customers. D. A great need for extra income.
27. What can be learned from the last two paragraphs?

You put on scent in the morning, but by noon you can’t smell it. A coworker lights a candle, and soon the scent seems gone. What’s happening? The answer lies in a phenomenon called olfactory fatigue — your nose’s way of ignoring continuous smells.
Your sense of smell works like this: smell molecules (分子) enter your nose and stick to special cells. These cells send signals to your brain’s smell center, which identifies the scent. It’s a highly sensitive (敏感的) system — humans can notice some smells at extremely low levels.
But when the same smell stays around you, your cells become less sensitive. They stop sending strong signals, even though the scent remains. This isn’t a mistake. It’s a natural skill. Your brain ignores unchanging information to focus on new, possibly important things. After all, if you’re living near a bakery, you don’t always need to be aware of the smell of bread. But you do need to notice if smoke starts coming in.
Olfactory fatigue happens faster than you might think. Complete adaptation to a smell can occur within two minutes of continuous exposure (接触). The effect is also smell-specific: you may ignore your rose candle but still smell the neighbor’s fish.
For the same reason, you usually can’t smell yourself. Your brain ignores your own scent because it’s always present. This is why you might not notice your body smell, while others can smell it clearly when they first meet you.
Scientists are now using this knowledge. They are creating “digital noses”, which never tire and can monitor air quality or find gas escape around the clock. They don’t suffer from olfactory fatigue.
So next time your candle seems to lose its scent, don’t be angry with the maker. Your nose is simply staying ready for the new while letting the familiar fade.
28. Which is an example of olfactory fatigue?
A. You catch the smell of bread. B. You notice gas escape quickly.
C. You ignore your body smell. D. You taste food more sharply.
29. What happens to the smell cells during the continuous exposure?
A. Send weaker signals. B. Grow more sensitive.
C. Stop molecule production. D. Weaken sense of smell.
30. What can be inferred about “digital noses”?
A. They are cheaper than real ones. B. They never have smell tiredness.
C. They smell as well as humans. D. They need frequent recharging.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Magic of Cells B. The History of Scent
C. How do we smell? D. Why is smell gone?
C 29. A 30. B 31. D
根据第五段“For the same reason, you usually can’t smell yourself. Your brain ignores your own scent because it’s always present.(出于同样的原因,你通常无法闻到自己的气味。你的大脑会忽略自己身上的气味,因为它始终存在)”可知,你忽视了身体的气味是嗅觉疲劳的例子。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“But when the same smell stays around you, your cells become less sensitive. They stop sending strong signals, even though the scent remains.(但当同样的气味持续存在时,你的细胞会变得不那么敏感。即使气味还在,它们也会停止发送强烈的信号)”可知,在持续暴露期间,嗅觉细胞会发出更弱的信号。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“They don’t suffer from olfactory fatigue.(它们不会出现嗅觉疲劳)”可知,“数字鼻子”永远不会感到嗅觉疲劳。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“You put on scent in the morning, but by noon you can’t smell it. A coworker lights a candle, and soon the scent seems gone. What’s happening? The answer lies in a phenomenon called olfactory fatigue — your nose’s way of ignoring continuous smells.(你早上喷了香氛,但是到中午你就闻不到它了。一位同事点燃了蜡烛,很快那股香味似乎就消失了。这是怎么回事?答案在于一种叫做嗅觉疲劳的现象——你的鼻子会忽略持续不断的气味)”结合全文围绕香味很快闻不到的现象,解释嗅觉疲劳原理,可知,D选项“为什么气味消失了?”最符合文章标题。

Walk through any city after dark, and you will find street lamps, office windows, and LED signs fill the night sky with a warm orange or white light. Scientists call this light pollution. For decades, researchers have known that light pollution harms nocturnal animals, affects sleep, and wastes energy. Now, a team at Vanderbilt University has discovered another hidden cost: it makes pollen (花粉) seasons longer, causing more serious pollen allergies (过敏).
The researchers used a special tool — satellite images. These satellites orbit Earth at night and take detailed pictures of artificial (人工的) light across the planet. The team compared these light maps with data on pollen levels in the eastern United States.
The results were striking. In dark, the countryside with little artificial lighting, pollen counts were significant for around 170 to 210 days per year. But in brightly lit cities like New York, significant pollen was found for up to 300 days — nearly two months longer!
Not only was the season longer, but it was also worse. In brightly lit areas, 27 percent of pollen-season days reached serious levels. In dark areas, only 17 percent of days were that bad.
The answer lies in biology. Plants use photoperiodism — they measure the length of night and day to know when to flower. When artificial lights shine at night, they confuse plants into “thinking” the day is longer than it really is. As a result, trees and grasses start flowering earlier and keep giving off pollen for a longer time.
The researchers suggest several practical steps. Cities could reduce light brightness, use covers on lamps to aim light downward instead of upward, or set up sensors (感应器) that turn lights off when no one is nearby. Changing to lighting with less blue light may also help, since blue wavelengths appear to have the strongest effect on plants.
For now, if you have pollen allergies and live in a bright city, you might have one more reason to wish for darker nights.
32. What makes pollen seasons longer in cities?
A. Artificial light. B. More plants. C. Wasted energy. D. Warmer environment.
33. Why did the researchers use satellite images?
A. To track the movement of pollen in the wind. B. To measure the temperature of different cities.
C. To count the number of trees in the countryside. D. To compare light maps with pollen level data.
34. What does the underlined word “photoperiodism” mean in paragraph 5?
A. A method to photograph pollen. B. A lighting system used for plants.
C. A reaction to the length of day and night. D. A plant disease caused by too much sunlight.
35. What is paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. Steps of setting up sensors. B. Reduction of light brightness.
C. Effects of blue light on plants. D. Solutions to longer pollen seasons.
A 33. D 34. C 35. D

此处为固定句型“a way for sb. to do sth.”,意为“对某人来说做某事的一种方式”,所以用动词不定式to sing作后置定语。

The Value of Money
Good morning, everyone. Today I’d like to share my understanding of the value of money.
Personally, money is necessary, but we can’t buy real happiness with money. As for my money habits, I keep a notebook to track every expense. About half of my money goes into savings for future needs, and the rest is spent thoughtfully on things that truly matter.
In short, money gains its real value not from how much we own, but from how wisely we use it.

Last month, I joined a youth volunteer group in our community, whose mission was to bring warmth to lonely elderly people living alone. My first task was to visit Mr. Carter, an old man living on Maple Street. The group leader told me that Mr. Carter had become extremely cold and silent after losing his wife to cancer two years ago, and few volunteers could bear staying with him for more than ten minutes. Despite the warning, I decided to give it a try.
On a Saturday morning, carrying a box of homemade cookies, I knocked on his heavy wooden door. The door opened a crack, through which a pair of sharp eyes stared at me with doubt. “What do you want?” he asked in an impatient voice. I introduced myself briefly, handing him the cookies. Without a word of thanks, he took them and shut the door right in front of me. Feeling disappointed but not beaten, I stood there for a moment before leaving.
The following week, I brought him several books about gardening, having noticed that his overgrown yard once contained beautiful roses. This time, the door opened wider. He stared at the books for a long while, his eyes softening a little. “My wife, who loved roses more than anything else, used to tend this garden,” he said in a much softer voice. We didn’t talk much, but he allowed me to sit on his porch(门廊)for a while, something he had never allowed any volunteer to do before.
On my third visit, I found him struggling to fix a broken wooden birdhouse with a hammer (锤子) in the yard, his shaky hands making the task almost impossible. He looked deeply discouraged, letting out a deep sigh (叹气). “I can’t do it anymore,” he whispered, almost to himself. I sat down beside him on the grass and said, “Maybe I can help, if you don’t mind.”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为80左右;
With a moment’s hesitation, he handed me the hammer.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With a moment’s hesitation, he handed me the hammer. I gently took the tool and started repairing the broken birdhouse carefully. Watching my steady movements, Mr. Carter stood quietly beside me, gradually relaxing. He slowly shared little stories about his wife and the lovely birds that once visited their yard. After finishing the work, a faint smile appeared on his face. He sincerely thanked me for my patience and company. From then on, he became warm and talkative, and genuine warmth finally filled his lonely little house.

26. What does Moore’s midnight help show?
A. A true love for work. B. A strong desire for popularity.
C. A deep care for customers. D. A great need for extra income.
27. What can be learned from the last two paragraphs?
A. Moore tries to inspire more people. B. Moore is satisfied with achievements.
C. Low expectations are easy to ignore. D. Curing blindness is key to success.

D

注意:
(1)续写词数应为80左右;
With a moment’s hesitation, he handed me the hammer.
