Unit 1 Life Choices
The age-old question of whether choice or effort holds greater significance in achieving success has generated countless debates. While some argue that effort is the cornerstone of achievement, others claim that the ability to make strategic choices is vital.
Effort, without a doubt, is the engine that drives progress. The saying “no pain, no gain” rings true in countless success stories. Hard work and commitment are essential qualities that separate those who achieve from those who merely wish. Effort is the consistent application of willpower toward a goal, and it is this application that bridges the gap between intention and realization.
However, the direction in which effort is applied is equally crucial, if not more so. This is where choice comes into play. A person can employ maximum effort in a field, but without a strategic choice, their efforts may produce minimal results. For instance, an individual might work tirelessly in a declining industry, but his hard work will likely be overshadowed by the industry's unavoidable downturn. On the contrary, someone who chooses a dynamic and growing field with a passion for it can achieve remarkable success with comparatively less effort. The ability to make informed and strategic choices can expand the impact of effort significantly.
A well-chosen path provides focus and motivation, making the effort more meaningful and productive. For example, a student choosing a major that agrees with his interests and strengths will likely put in more effort and perform better than one who is forced into a field he dislikes. This encourages a deeper engagement. In addition, the sense of purpose generated by pursuing a meaningful personal path often translates into greater power in the face of setbacks, which is invaluable in both professional and personal fields.
As I see it, while effort is undoubtedly a critical factor in achieving success, the importance of choice cannot be overstated. Effort is the vehicle, but choice is the compass (罗盘) that guides it. Without a strategic direction, effort may lead to exhaustion without accomplishment.

(2025·北京·高考真题)The call to “know yourself” has been there since ancient times, but our sense of self doesn’t always match what others perceive. Considering the stories we tell about ourselves can help us to change our minds for better.
For many years, psychologists saw identity as a combination of someone’s values, beliefs, goals and social roles. Then, in the 1980s, Bob Johnson created the life story model of identity, in which he proposes that, as we go through life, these core features are built in with our memories to create a personal story through which we understand our lives.
Our life story is something that starts coming together in our teenage years, when we begin to organise our lives into chapters around key events or life changes, and begin to see ourselves as both the central character and, to a varying extent, the story’s author. People with more consistent stories tend to have a stronger sense of identity, and they feel their life has more meaning, direction and sense of purpose. Such people show greater overall life satisfaction, too.
Johnson has also investigated the link between well-being and certain story themes. He discovered that whether someone describes having had some control over events in their past is an important predictor of a person’s mental health. Another key theme involves finding some kind of positive meaning after stressful events. “People could talk about gaining knowledge or personal growth,” says Johnson. His research shows that this is often missing for people with mental health conditions. The good news is that there is evidence we can learn to change our own story.
Lisa Green, another researcher, sounds a few notes of caution (谨慎). For instance, hearing about the power of redemptive (拯救性的) stories, many people may feel forced to find a positive angle on horrible events. She says that Western culture already pushes people to look for the silver lining behind every cloud.
If you want to turn over a new leaf, though, one top tip is that it helps to choose a significant date that signals the start of a new “chapter”. Contrary to popular doubt, resolutions made on 1 January are more effective for this reason. So, whether your goal is saving money or getting fit, there is no better time to become the author of our own destiny (命运).
1.What can be inferred about personal stories?
A.They are unrelated to health. B.Consistent ones lead to stress.

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·海南儋州·期中)When I entered high school, there were many things that worried me. I felt homesick and couldn’t study well, which resulted in low marks as well as low self-esteem (自尊心). I didn’t know what to do so I just followed others.
One day, all students were called to the school playground. We were asked to meet an education expert for personality development. All of us were waiting for him when we saw a thin man and the headmaster. He looked confident, with a smile on his face. He introduced himself to us and started his work. Most of it was interactive (互动的) lessons with students. Then he said, “Now I need 20 students, who want to take a talent (才能) test and consider them to be the best in the world.” We all wanted to attend, so all of us raised our hands in unison.
He chose 20 among us and gave them a question paper and said, “There are 10 questions on the paper, and the quickest person to answer it will be the winner! … When finishing it, write your name on the paper and give it to me.” When he said “Start”, all the students wrote quickly. Between their funny actions and our loud laughter, somehow the competition was over. At last, he told us the name of the winner … NOBODY. We all were surprised, and silence fell upon us. He said between the first instruction and the first question, there was another line which said, “Read all the questions carefully and answer ONLY THE 10TH QUESTION.” Needless to say, all the students were awkward.
After a few minutes, he spoke at last and told us to keep careful and have creativity in life. He got all our attention; he is none other than Dr. Tyler Ralph, one of the most famous experts in American education.

A.Following others slowly.
B.Doing something doubtfully.

4.What does Dr. Tyler Ralph think the students should be?
A.Energetic and thoughtful. B.Careful and creative.
C.Confident and active. D.Brave and honest.
Passage 2
(25-26高一上·湖南株洲·期中)Do you have anything you want to share with others? Starting a high school club can help you build a group and connect with like-minded students. Here is a step-by-step guide to get started.
Step 1: Choose Your Club and Set Goals
First, decide the type of club you want to create. Consider whether you are starting a new club, bringing back an old one, or making a present one bigger. Set clear and achievable goals. For example, if you want to start a chess club, you may need at least eight members to hold competitions. Knowing your goal will help you plan well.
Step 2: Know Who You Want to Join
Think about who might be interested in joining the club. For a math club, students who are good at STEM subjects are a natural choice, but don’t limit yourself. Students doing well in other fields, such as drawing and structural (结构的) design, may also provide unique ideas. A clear target group increases the chances of getting members.
Step 3: Recruit (招募) Members
This is the most important step. You can use several methods:
·Posters: Make eye-catching posters and place them in classrooms, halls, and online.
·Announcements: Ask the school to include your club in daily announcements.
·Club Days: Set up a special place where you students can try things. Fun activities get more attention than a simple sign.
Step 4: Welcome New Members
Once members join, make them feel included. Plan activities that allow everyone to join in, even beginners. Members are more likely to stay and help the club do well.
Starting a club needs planning, creativity, and teamwork. Follow these steps, and you can build an active and growing group in your school and finally enjoy your school life.

A.By setting a low goal.
B.By making eye-catching posters.
C.By encouraging them to invite friends.
D.By organizing beginner-friendly activities.
Passage 3
(25-26高一上·湖北·期中)My first day as a teacher, I was told I had a “sweet group of kids” by their fourth grade teachers, and after making it through that first day, I found this to be true. I quickly grew to love each child in my classroom. But in the following days, I found it hard to compete with the endless stream of fast-paced technology that filled their lives. It was a struggle to keep the students’ attention.
As the year progressed, it came time to teach the American Revolution and I wondered how I would connect something that happened over 200 years earlier to the students’ lives. Another teacher suggested I try staging a revolution of my own, and so one Monday morning, the students arrived to find me in an elegant purple dress with long white gloves.
I explained to the students that for a few weeks I would be “queen” of the classroom, and they would be my “colonists (殖民者).” I passed out five pennies to all the students each day and told them as long as they kept their pennies until the end of class, they would be rewarded. As the unit progressed, I began taxing (收税) a penny to go to the restroom or sharpen a pencil at other times than the given times. The tax reduced distractions (分心) because students didn’t want to give up their daily reward for a few minutes of playtime in the restroom. Then, my system took a sharp turn.
At times, I would step aside from my queen act to give the “colonists” advice. “Think about what the early colonists did to solve their problems with the taxes. What can you do that might convince the queen to stop taxing you?” The unit took twists and turns (一波三折) that weren’t in my lesson plans, but I let the lessons unfold without concern over everything turning out a specific way. For the first time that year, I saw students pawing through their textbooks. One student even said, “This is cool. We are learning and having fun at the same time.”
Through that unit, I realized that if the students could see how their input influenced the class, they would be engaged.

B.Competing with other teachers in teaching skills.

2.Why did the teacher dress up as a “queen” in class?
A.To show her elegance to the students.
B.To make students understand the history better.
C.To get students to pay attention to her clothes.
D.To celebrate the American Revolution.
3.What did the teacher do to reduce distractions during the “revolution” teaching?
A.She taxed students for ungiven times.
B.She asked students to study textbooks quietly.
C.She allowed students to go to the restroom freely.
D.She gave students extra pennies as rewards.
4.What did the teacher learn from this teaching experience?
A.History lessons should be taught in a fun way.
B.Students should be given more freedom in class.
C.Students should be involved to attract their attention.
D.Teachers should use more multimedia in teaching.
Passage 4
(25-26高一上·湖南长沙·期中)Teenage life is quite dramatic but that doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy your life in these years. Even with your daily troubles, your life is not very hard if you know how to deal with them.
I know exactly how you feel. Life as a teenager can be hard. You are not a kid anymore, because you are smart enough to observe and analyse your surroundings. However, you are still not an adult because there are still lots of experiences that you need to have and lessons that you need to learn from these experiences. To top it all, the hormonal imbalance (激素失调) in your body can really mess you up emotionally. I have been there. I was in it for 6 years exploring what life is about.
As a teenager, I had a major problem completing my chores (琐事) on time. And at that time, all that I needed to do was to finish my homework, study for the test and clean my room. Now, I have many more things to do: cooking, cleaning and working while striking a balance between all my relationships related to work, family and friends. That is really a lot of work. So, I will just give you one golden tip — “Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today.”
Life becomes much easier now because I finish all my work on time and I have enough time to let my hair down. Half the problems in adolescence are because we hate doing things. We’d rather go and have fun than sit down and take care of our duties and responsibilities. That is why you have so much trouble in your life. Your parents won’t let you go out with friends because you haven’t cleaned your room or your teacher is always criticizing you because you haven’t finished your assignments.
1.What does the writer mainly want to tell us in the first paragraph?
A.Teenage life is hard. B.Teenagers can’t enjoy life.
C.Teenage life is changeable. D.Teenagers should learn more.
2.What plays a key role in making teenage life hard most according to paragraph 2?
A.The failure of concentration. B.The lack of life experience.
C.The adolescent changes. D.The unfamiliar surroundings.
3.How did the writer feel about her teenage life?
A.It was difficult. B.It was simple.
C.It was enjoyable. D.It was boring.
4.What does the writer advise teenagers to do?
A.Go and have fun. B.Shoulder the duties and responsibilities.
C.Complete their homework. D.Leave their friends.
Passage 5
How to Get Along with Friends
Movies and TV shows make friendships seem effortless with little conflict, but real-life friendships require effort and can be complicated. 1
Be positive.
Focusing on the upside makes you a better friend. 2 And balance emotional chats with cheerful topics (books, games, funny stories) to improve friendships and moods. Lean on friends when in trouble — no need to be always positive.
Show sincerity.
3 Whether you’re getting to know each other or are being asked for your feedback, being honest and authentic with your friends will strengthen your bond with them. It’s a lot easier to get along with friends if you’re comfortable sharing your real thoughts and personality.
4
Our friends want to feel cared about. It’s natural to talk only about yourself when unsure what to say, but this might annoy them. Making an effort to learn about their lives shows your care and strengthens your bond. Ask open-ended questions about their lives and interests — this helps a lot!
Make time for each other.
Spending time with your friends has a huge impact, whether it’s for a few minutes or for several hours. Schedule fun activities with your friends, or just find time to talk for a while. You don’t need to have big outings; it can be something as simple as catching up while getting food in the canteen. 5
Real friendships aren’t the effortless ones on screen — they grow when you bring positivity, sincerity, curiosity, and time. Nurture these, and your bonds will stay strong through the years.
A.Talk more about personal life.
B.Show interest in your friends.
C.Or it can be sending them a link they might like.
D.Fortunately, a few tips can make all the difference.
E.Sharing your worries often helps friends feel trusted.
F.Yet constant complaints or hopeless talks tire friends.
G.Your friends don’t need you to be someone you’re not.
Passage 6
How to Create Good Study Habits for Exams
With good study habits, you can reduce your stress and face exams with confidence. While building lasting study habits might seem challenging at first, soon these new habits will become part of your daily routine. 1
Set a daily study time.
You should plan your study time long before the exam day. You should set aside time every day to study so that you can finish homework and review what you have learned. 2 . Daily study periods are needed to give yourself time to make connections between concepts.
3
Choose an area that is clean, well-lit, and free of distractions so that you can focus on your study materials. Avoid sitting in front of the television or around a busy part of your home. Some people like to study in the library or coffee shop, but this may not work for you if you’re easily distracted by movement or noises.
Turn off your electronics.
Electronic devices are a big distraction, so remember to turn off your phone and television. When you need to use your computer during your study session, stay away from social media, email, and off topic websites. 4 This way, your phone gets the power it needs, and you won’t be disturbed by it.
Make a study plan.
5 . Then, work backward to plan how you will study for each one. Your plan doesn’t have to be very detailed. Breaking the information into smaller parts and solving a little each day can prevent you from feeling stressed. This method also makes it easier to reward yourself for following the plan.
A.Create a learning environment.
B.Regular study keeps you busy every day.
C.Mark your exam dates on a calendar.
D.You will enjoy the process of studying this way.
E.Here are some tips to improve your study habits.
F.Charge your phone in another room while studying.
G.It enables you to keep the knowledge fresh in your mind.

Education plays a significant role in our lives. Learning, more than just gaining knowledge, actually 1 (help) you develop your mind, way of thinking and many other skills, 2 make you become sharper in many ways.
When 3 (study) subjects such as mathematics and physics, you are not sure whether you will use 4 (they) or not in the future, but what these subjects teach you is how to think deeper. Learning can also lead you to better opportunities. Why not study a wider 5 (various) of things to explore the promising future?
But sometimes, learning can get a little boring. How do we make it more interesting? First, don’t burn 6 midnight oil. Many students do this and end up becoming 7 (extreme) tired. Take breaks and manage your time wisely. Don’t think that you need to study all the time. Second, study smart, and then the time and effort 8 (spend) on studying will generate positive results. There’s no need 9 (stay) up late at night. Never study at the last minute for your exams. Instead, spend only a few hours studying 10 all of your attention, and you’ll probably learn more in a much shorter time.

C.They are relevant to happiness. D.Thematic ones hold back change.
2.What can we learn from this passage?
A.Talking about gains from failure is negative. B.New Year resolutions are well received.

C.Make a comparison. D.Illustrate an approach.
4.What is the passage mainly about?
A.How self-identity works. B.How story-tellers are made.

A.Because he can’t get along well with others.
B.He often follow others.

D.He was not confident.
2.What does the underlined part “in unison” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Following others slowly.
B.Doing something doubtfully.
C.Having no purpose or thought.
D.Doing something at the same time.
3.Why was there no winner among those 20 students?
A.The questions were difficult. B.None of them was a talent.

4.What does Dr. Tyler Ralph think the students should be?
A.Energetic and thoughtful. B.Careful and creative.

1.Who is the text written for?
A.Parents. B.Teachers.
C.School leaders. D.High school students.
2.Why is setting goals important for a club?
A.It attracts students quickly. B.It helps with good planning.
C.It makes others know about the club well. D.It allows the members to communicate.
3.How can clubs make sure members feel included?
A.By setting a low goal.
B.By making eye-catching posters.
C.By encouraging them to invite friends.
D.By organizing beginner-friendly activities.
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.D

根据Step 4: Welcome New Members部分中“Once members join, make them feel included. Plan activities that allow everyone to join in, even beginners.(一旦成员加入,让他们感到被接纳。计划一些能让每个人,甚至是初学者都能参与的活动)”可知,通过组织适合初学者的活动可以确保成员感到被接纳。故选D项。
1.What did the teacher find difficult at the beginning of teaching?
A.Loving each child in the classroom.
B.Competing with other teachers in teaching skills.
C.Connecting historical events to students’ lives.
D.Keeping the students’ attention away from technology.
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.A 4.C
根据第一段“But in the following days, I found it hard to compete with the endless stream of fast-paced technology that filled their lives. It was a struggle to keep the students’ attention. (但在接下来的日子里,我发现很难与充斥着他们生活的快节奏科技相抗衡。让学生集中注意力是一件很困难的事。)”可知,老师一开始遇到的困难是让学生的注意力从科技上移开。故选D项。
2.推理判断题。根据第二段“As the year progressed, it came time to teach the American Revolution and I wondered how I would connect something that happened over 200 years earlier to the students’ lives. Another teacher suggested I try staging a revolution of my own, and so one Monday morning, the students arrived to find me in an elegant purple dress with long white gloves.(随着这一年时间的推进,教授美国独立战争的课程提上了日程。我不禁思索,该如何将这桩发生在两百多年前的历史事件与学生们的生活联系起来。另一位老师建议我不妨亲自“策划一场革命”,于是在一个周一的早晨,学生们到校时,发现我身着一袭雅致的紫色长裙,搭配着白色长手套。)”可知,老师装扮成“女王”是为了通过模拟历史场景,让学生更好地理解美国独立战争的历史。故选B项。
3.细节理解题。根据第三段“As the unit progressed, I began taxing a penny to go to the restroom or sharpen a pencil at other times than the given times. The tax reduced distractions because students didn’t want to give up their daily reward for a few minutes of playtime in the restroom. (随着课程的推进,我开始对在非规定时间去洗手间或削铅笔收一便士的税。这种税收减少了分心,因为学生们不想为了在洗手间玩几分钟而放弃每天的奖励。)”可知,老师通过对非规定时间的行为征税来减少学生分心。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Through that unit, I realized that if the students could see how their input influenced the class, they would be engaged. (通过这个单元,我意识到如果学生们能看到他们的参与如何影响课堂,他们就会投入其中。)”可知,老师从这次教学经历中学到,让学生参与进来才能吸引他们的注意力。故选C项。
1. 根据第一段中“Teenage life is quite dramatic but that doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy your life in these years. Even with your daily troubles, your life is not very hard if you know how to deal with them.(青少年生活相当富有戏剧性,但这并不意味着你不能享受这些年的生活。即使有日常的烦恼,如果你知道如何应对,你的生活也不会很艰难)”可推测,作者让青少年多学习,这样即使生活有烦恼,也不至于太难。 D. Teenagers should learn more.(青少年应该多学习)符合以上说法,故选D。
根据第二段中“To top it all, the hormonal imbalance (激素失调) in your body can really mess you up emotionally. I have been there. I was in it for 6 years exploring what life is about.(最重要的是,你体内的激素失衡真的会在情绪上把你搞砸。我经历过。我花了6年时间探索生活的意义)”以及整段对青少年时期身体、心理变化的描述可知,青少年时期的变化,包括身体激素失调等,是使青少年生活变得艰难的关键因素。故选C。

That is why you have so much trouble in your life.(我们宁愿去玩乐,也不愿坐下来承担我们的责任和义务。

2.由上文“Focusing on the upside makes you a better friend.(关注积极的一面会让你成为更好的朋友。)”和下文“And balance emotional chats with cheerful topics (books, games, funny stories) to improve friendships and moods.(要平衡情感交流和轻松话题(书籍、游戏、趣事),让友谊和心情更美好。)”
和下文“Whether you’re getting to know each other or are being asked for your feedback, being honest and authentic with your friends will strengthen your bond with them.(无论初识还是朋友征求意见,真诚相待都能加深彼此的关系。)” G项“Your friends don’t need you to be someone you’re not.(你的朋友不需要你伪装自己。)”
4.由下文“Our friends want to feel cared about.(朋友都希望感受到被在乎。)”和“Making an effort to learn about their lives shows your care and strengthens your bond.(用心了解朋友的生活,是在乎的表现,也能加深联结。)” B项“Show interest in your friends.(对朋友表现出兴趣。)”符合语境,该句精准概括本段主旨,与后文的“learn about their lives”和“Ask open-ended questions about their lives and interests”完全呼应,逻辑清晰。故选B项。
5.由上文“You don’t need to have big outings; it can be something as simple as catching up while getting food in the canteen.(不必安排盛大的外出,简单如食堂打饭时闲聊近况也可以。)” C项“Or it can be sending them a link they might like.(也可以是给他们发一个他们可能感兴趣的链接。)”

You should plan your study time long before the exam day. You should set aside time every day to study so that you can finish homework and review what you have learned. 2 . Daily study periods are needed to give yourself time to make connections between concepts.

Make a study plan.
5 . Then, work backward to plan how you will study for each one. Your plan doesn’t have to be very detailed. Breaking the information into smaller parts and solving a little each day can prevent you from feeling stressed. This method also makes it easier to reward yourself for following the plan.
