Like a lot of Canadians, Andrew Suboch grew up knowing little about Canada’s national game — lacrosse(曲棍球), other than watching some neighbours pass a ball using old wooden sticks.
It was only when his two children started playing the game as part of their training for hockey (冰球) that he took much notice. His son, Jack, went on to excel at lacrosse and he now plays for the Vancouver Warriors of the National Lacrosse League.
Both children came up through the Mimico Minor Lacrosse organization, in the Toronto area, which has been around since 1890. When the number of players in the kids’ league began falling in 2014, Mr. Suboch, who is a personal injury lawyer in Toronto, volunteered to step in. He offered to sponsor the “Baby Peanut” program, which introduced children ages 3 and 4 to the game.
Thanks to his sponsorship, more than 100 children play for free each spring for eight weeks. They spend an hour every Saturday learning the game and every player is given a lightweight stick and a shirt. “They are taught to catch, throw, pass and shoot in a non-contact environment,” he said. “You get them running around. Get them away from the screen. It is our national game, so you get them exposed. And sure enough, they caught on.”
To fund the program, Mr. Suboch came up with a novel idea. He started searching his neighbourhood for used appliances, metal and electronic items, such as computers and cellphones. He sorted the material and sold it to a local recycling centre. “Word has gotten out, so people now will give me their used electronics and metal stuff,” he said. The recycling effort raises around $20,000 annually, which covers the cost of the lacrosse program.
Mr. Suboch said watching the kids play has given him a lot of satisfaction and joy. Not only is far less junk going to landfill sites, he said, but “we’ve also got kids who are not in front of a screen.”
24. Why did Andrew start sponsoring the “Baby Peanut” program?
A. His son asked him to support the game.
B. The kids’ league faced declining participation.
C. He wanted to promote his own law firm.
D. He hoped to popularize a hockey organization.
25. What does the underlined phrase “caught on” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Learned the rules. B. Got injured.
C. Attracted donations. D. Became interested.
26. How did Andrew obtain funds for the lacrosse program?
A. By organizing charity matches. B. By collecting and selling used items.
C. By charging participation fees. D. By raising money from the community.
27. What can we learn about the program’s impact?
A. It reduced screen time for children. B. It increased waste sent to landfills.
C. It made lacrosse popular worldwide. D. It created jobs for the local residents.

When Sonja Detrinidad opened her online shop selling houseplants, she didn’t have high hopes for it. But the opposite happened: She was flooded, shipping out 1,200 orders in June of 2020 alone. In the past year, Detrinidad sent out more than 70,000 plants. Her success is just one example of increased time at home leading to an explosion in the houseplant industry.
“Plants are in fashion right now,” says Dr. Melinda Knuth, a researcher from the University of Florida. “People who live in plant-rich environments report a higher life satisfaction rating, ” she says. “Adding more nature to our environment can change our mood and how we think.” Plants can improve our state of mind in a few ways but the biggest is by decreasing our level of cortisol, the stress hormone (激素) in our body.
“Students who are around plants perform better academically than students who are in a classroom without plants,” says Knuth. “This productivity also translates into the workplace for adults. Our study showed that there was a 30% decrease in sick leave for people who were in plant-rich workplaces.”
If you’re among the groups of people who are enjoying the mental and physical health benefits of surrounding yourself with plants, don’t beat yourself up if one (or a few!) doesn’t make it. “Doctors practice medicine and lawyers practice law and you should allow yourself the practice it takes to sustain a plant. Tending to plants is an exercise in patience and learning. Be invested in taking care of it, but if it dies, go get another one,” Detrinidad says.
28. How was Detrinidad’s business when it started?
A. It faced tough competition. B. It suffered a great loss.
C. It got lots of financial support. D. It went surprisingly well.
29. What is one of Knuth’s findings about plants?
A. They appeal more to students. B. They purify the environment.
C. They raise the cortisol level. D. They enhance productivity.
30. What does Detrinidad try to explain by mentioning doctors and lawyers?
A. The necessity of social skills. B. The meaning of sustainability.
C. The importance of repeated efforts. D. The value of professional opinions.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Time to Replace Houseplants B. Plants Boost Your Mood
C. Tips on Choosing Houseplants D. Plants Brighten Your Home

Cristina, a teen who grew up in a poor neighborhood in Madrid, never imagined herself playing the violin. But today she is first violinist in an inventive orchestra (乐团), bringing together two dozen other disadvantaged youths, using instruments made from recycled materials. “I am really happy, because the project has changed my life a lot,” said Cristina, her eyes gleaming.
Luis, 18, credits the project with keeping him on a right track in a neighbourhood like Vallecas, which has a high school dropout rate. “Instead of meeting up with friends, I preferred to listen to music, play it, and little by little it became a way of life,” he said.
The project, called “Music of Recycling”, aims to breathe new life into junk while also benefiting youths from disadvantaged backgrounds and it is run by Spanish environmental group Ecoembes and is inspired by Paraguay’s Cateura orchestra, made up of musicians from a poor neighborhood who play instruments made from materials found in waste.
After Ecoembes invited the Cateura orchestra to perform in Madrid in 2014, the group decided to found its own similar ensemble (小乐团) that same year, said Gil, the director of Music of Recycling. The ensemble put on its first concert just four months later and “the kids could not play more than four notes,” said Gil.
Now after having performed in cities across Spain, “We already have four boys studying in scholarships at music schools,” he added. More than 100 children are taking music classes from members of the orchestra as part of the project.
The instruments are created by Soler, a third-generation instrument maker, from cans, wooden boxes and parts of abandoned instruments. He tried to make the instruments as close to their “normal” shape as possible so the children won’t have difficulty playing regular equipment in the future.
32. What does the author intend to do by referring to Cristina and Luis?
A. Praise the teens for their efforts. B. Introduce the startup of the project.
C. Show the effects of the project. D. Present ways to mix music and recycling.
33. Where does the project’s inspiration come from?
A. A group of musicians. B. A children’s orchestra.
C. Disadvantaged youths. D. An environmental group.
34. What can we learn about the project?
A. It was started in 2014. B. It was funded by the government.
C. It spread across the world. D. It made a large amount of money.
35. What’s Soler’s attitude towards the project?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Tolerant. D. Uncaring.
While technology addicts teens to their devices, they are not helpless against the draw of it. Here are five ways educators can support their students’ digital well-being.
Explore design tricks companies use. The technology we use daily is designed to catch and hold our attention. Companies know what keeps our eyes on the screen. To help, teachers can unpack design tricks and explain how companies employ features like auto-play to get users to stay on their apps. ____36____
Talk about how technology can increase feelings of anxiety. The decline in youth mental health is associated with an increase in social media use. ____37____ We can help our students by allowing them to consider the benefits of technology and then to think about changing the habits that aren’t serving their well-being.
____38____ Social media can bring the feeling: “All my friends have better lives than me.” Plus, design features like “read receipts” can lead to teens knowing their messages have been seen and stressing about why friends haven’t yet replied. These are classic examples of thinking traps. Identifying them can help teens get rid of some negative thoughts.
Uncover the ways that AI can play a role in misinformation. AI is rapidly transforming the world. Recommendation algorithms (算法), which determine what we do and do not see on our feeds and in our search results, can have very real consequences. ____39____ By understanding how these technologies work, students can start to enjoy more benefits of technology.
Encourage families to have meaningful conversations with their child. Take the time to share with families the topics and resources you’re teaching in class. ____40____ Knowing we’re all in the same boat is crucial.

The July sun was burning over Oakwood Avenue. Twelve-year-old Mia felt sweat dropping down her back as she arranged the freshly made lemonade (柠檬水) on her folding table. She’d made the chalk drawings that morning: pink hearts and blue skateboards. Her big poster swung desperately in the hot wind: Lemonade 50 cents — Save for Skateboard!
“Business slow, eh?” Mr. Rossi’s voice carried flour-dusted kindness from his grocery store doorway. And the smell of freshly baked bread followed him. Mia nodded, smoothing seven sweaty coins on the table.
As they were talking, a silver car stopped by. A businessman in a nice suit stepped out, phone glued to his ear. “I said I would be there soon!” He seemed to be in a hurry. Grabbing a bottle of lemonade, he put a $20 bill onto the table. “Keep the change!”
Mia was surprised. “No, sir. But...” Hurriedly, she counted out $19.50. “Here’s your change, sir.”
“Keep it. Consider it a tip.” The businessman said with a gentle smile.
“No, I can’t. The lemonade’s fifty cents.” Mia insisted. The car door was closed, with only tire (轮胎) marks left on the dirt road.
Mia stared at the bill. Twenty dollars. Enough for skateboard wheels! Her fingers brushed through the cash box.
“Wow, good luck.” Mr. Rossi said and went back to his grocery store.
“But my mom used to say, money weighs heavy in dishonest pockets.” Mia whispered. As she was about to put away the money, she spotted something under the maple tree — a black leather wallet sticking out through dead leaves.
Mia’s fingers shook as she opened it. Credit cards. A driver’s license. And a hundred-dollar bill. Her skateboard fund screamed in her ears, but Mom’s voice shouted louder. Mia could feel the wallet was heavy and realized the owner would be very worried.
Without any hesitation, Mia went to Mr. Rossi for help. Looking through the contents of the wallet, Mr. Rossi said the owner would surely return and look for it. So maybe the best choice was to wait.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Mia waited at her lemonade stand until darkness fell.

W: Hello, everyone. I’ve got some good news to share. I signed up for a hip-hop dance course at a dance club two days ago. Yesterday was my first lesson. As I was anxious, I arrived 15 minutes before the class began. So I got to meet some of the people in my class, which relaxed my mind a bit. When our dance instructor entered the room, I felt even better because she was very easy-going and nice. This encouraged my confidence.
And who knows, I may convince some of you to come with me. We can easily get there on foot from our university. What’s even better about this club, though, is that it offers adult classes in a variety of dance styles, including Latin jazz, disco, and traditional dance. All beginner classes are on Saturday, which is very convenient for university students like us. Each beginner course consists of two levels, each one lasting four months, and I will take both levels. As for the cost, it’s £250 per level, no matter what type of dance you pick. And there’s a 20% discount for university students. Let me know your decision. Talk later.

B 25. D 26. B 27. A
When the number of players...began falling in 2014, Mr. Suboch...volunteered to step in(2014年当儿童联赛参与人数开始下降时,Suboch先生自愿介入)”可知,赞助直接原因是儿童联赛参与率下降。
根据文章第四段中““They are taught to catch, throw, pass and shoot in a non-contact environment,” he said. “You get them running around. Get them away from the screen.(他说:“他们被教导要在非接触环境中捕捉,投掷,传球和投球。”“你让他们四处奔跑。让他们离开屏幕”)”可知,教孩子们打球,四处跑,孩子们应该是很感兴趣,由此可推知,caught on指孩子们对运动产生了兴趣。故选D。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。 根据文章第五段中“He started searching his neighbourhood for used appliances, metal and electronic items, such as computers and cellphones. He sorted the material and sold it to a local recycling centre. “Word has gotten out, so people now will give me their used electronics and metal stuff,” he said. The recycling effort raises around $20,000 annually, which covers the cost of the lacrosse program.(他开始搜索自己的附近,寻找二手电器,金属和电子产品,例如计算机和手机。他对材料进行了分类,并将其卖给了当地的回收中心。他说:“消息已经出来了,所以人们现在会给我他们二手的电子和金属东西。”回收工作每年筹集约20,000美元,涵盖了曲棍网兜球计划的成本。)”可知,资金来源于回收物品。故选B。
【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段中“we’ve got kids who are not in front of a screen(孩子们不再盯着屏幕)”可知,项目显著减少了儿童屏幕时间。故选A。

D 29. D 30. C 31. B
根据第一段中的“When Sonja Detrinidad opened her online shop selling houseplants, she didn’t have high hopes for it. But the opposite happened: She was flooded, shipping out 1,200 orders in June of 2020 alone. (当Sonja Detrinidad开设她的网店售卖室内植物时,她并没有抱太大的期望。但结果却恰恰相反:订单如潮水般涌来,仅在2020年6月就寄出了1200份订单)”可知,Sonja Detrinidad刚开始开网店卖室内植物时,并没有抱太大希望,但实际情况是订单很多,生意出奇地好。故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的““Students who are around plants perform better academically than students who are in a classroom without plants,” says Knuth. “This productivity also translates into the workplace for adults. Our study showed that there was a 30% decrease in sick leave for people who were in plant-rich workplaces.”(Knuth表示:“身处植物周围的学生,其学业表现比在没有植物的教室里的学生更出色。这种效率提升同样适用于成年人的工作场合。我们的研究显示,在植物丰富的工作环境中,人们的病假率降低了 30%。”)”可知,Knuth的研究发现,接触植物的学生学业表现更好,成年人在植物丰富的工作环境中生产率提高,病假率降低,因此,“植物能提升生产率”是她的发现之一。故选D。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的““Doctors practice medicine and lawyers practice law and you should allow yourself the practice it takes to sustain a plant. Tending to plants is an exercise in patience and learning. Be invested in taking care of it, but if it dies, go get another one,” Detrinidad says.
D
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Tolerant. D. Uncaring.
C 33. A 34. A 35. B

根据第三段“it is run by Spanish environmental group Ecoembes and is inspired by Paraguay’s Cateura orchestra(它是由西班牙环保组织Ecoembes运营的,其灵感来自巴拉圭Cateura乐团)”可知,这一项目的灵感来自于Cateura乐团的音乐家们。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“After Ecoembes invited the Cateura orchestra to perform in Madrid in 2014, the group decided to found its own similar ensemble (小乐团) that same year (在2014年Ecoembes邀请Cateura乐团在马德里演出之后,同年这个团队决定发建立自己的小乐团)”可知,他们建立自己的小乐队也是在2014年。故选A。
根据最后一段“He tried to make the instruments as close to their “normal” shape as possible so the children won’t have difficulty playing regular equipment in the future.(他试图让这些乐器尽可能地接近它们的“正常”形状,这样孩子们以后玩普通乐器就不会有困难了)”可知Soler正在努力为这一项目贡献自己的力量,因此可以推断出,他对这一项目是持支持态度的。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Mia waited at her lemonade stand until darkness fell.

The businessman promised to buy Mia a skateboard.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mia waited at her lemonade stand until darkness fell. The street quieted down, and most neighbors had already gone inside. Just as Mia began to pack up, headlights lit the road. The silver car returned, and the businessman came out, his expression filled with concern. When Mia handed him the wallet, his shoulders relaxed and a thankful smile spread across his face. He glanced inside, and clearly relieved that everything was still there. Mia simply told him she had found it by the maple tree.
The businessman promised to buy Mia a skateboard. However, Mia hesitated for a moment and then politely declined. She explained that saving up for it by herself made the goal more meaningful. Instead, she offered him another bottle of lemonade — this time chilled with extra ice. The man smiled and paid the proper amount before driving off. As Mia packed up her stand, she felt a quiet pride settle in her heart. Though she hadn’t reached her goal yet, she knew she was on the right path.
