Accommodation at University College Cork, Ireland
On-campus accommodation
UCC Campus accommodation is more than just a place to eat and sleep — it provides social cultural and sporting shops and the chance to develop friendships that will last a lifetime. Our accommodation services are divided into our two areas of operation, one being the safe, modern accommodation for those studying during the academic year. The other one is the excellent summer accommodation for holiday or summer course visitors who are seeking what is a very special environment to stay in with every modern convenience but dipped in history and the atmosphere of one of Europe’s oldest and most highly regarded universities.
Rental Housing
This is where the student lives with a family and 1~5 other students and you get your breakfast, evening meal and light supper. Rates are available for both single and shared rooms, five days or seven-day board. Prices are set and no landlady can charge over this agreed rate. This is a very economical and safe accommodation option and particularly well suited to freshmen. Lists of landladies are available free from the Accommodation Office by post, fax and email.
Shared Student Housing
Available rooms are advertised in the Accommodation Office throughout the year. Updated lists of them are provided daily. Lifetime friendship is easily developed here.
Living with a Landlord
Usually this provides more mature students with a high standard of accommodation at reasonable rents, usually a little below the market price. Vacancies are advertised in the Accommodation Office throughout the year.

As 18,000-plus hockey fans filed into climate Pledge Arena for the Seattle Kraken’s first-ever home game, Brian Hamilton, one of the support staff members for the visiting Vancouver Canucks, lay out the team’s hockey sticks, masks and bottled water. As he did so, he didn’t notice the woman, Nadia Popovici, who took the seat directly behind him. Nor did she pay much attention to him. That would change soon enough.
Halfway through the action, Popovici’s eyes locked onto something odd on the man sitting with the Canucks players. Through the stadium glass, she spotted an ugly-looking mole(痣) on the back of Hamilton’s neck: reddish and raised with an irregular border. She had seen plenty like it as a hospital volunteer and soon-to-be medical student, so she was pretty sure it was a cancerous mole.
What she wasn’t sure of was how to approach Hamilton. “It’s so uncomfortable to have something on your body pointed out,” she told the Seattle Times. But she knew she had to say something. As Hamilton lingered near the ice between periods, Popovici, dressed in Kraken kit, tapped on the glass, keyed in a message on her phone and held the screen against the barrier: “The mole on the back of your neck looks like it might be cancerous. You might want to go see a doctor!”
Hamilton glanced at the brightly lit message for only a second. That’s strange, he thought. Walking away, he uneasily rubbed the back of his neck. A few days later, he visited the Canucks’ doctor, who agreed that the mole looked alarming and ordered a tissue examination. It came back positive — life-threatening if left unattended. Hamilton had the mole removed, and his recovery is excellent.
“She took me out of a slow fire,” says Hamilton. “The words out of the doctor’s mouth were if I ignored that for four to five years, I wouldn’t be here.” The two connected at the next Canucks-Kraken matchup, where Hamilton was able to express his heartfelt gratitude to his guardian angel in person and tell her that his mom loves her. No thanks were necessary, Popovici told the Athletic, “It was just one moment in our lives where we crossed paths at the right time.”
4. What was Brain Hamilton?
A. An assistant. B. A coach. C. A player. D. A doctor.
5. How did Nadia Popovici warn Hamilton?
A. By passing a note. B. By informing a doctor.
C. By typing a message. D. By telling him directly.
6. What was the result of Hamilton’s tissue examination?
A. The mole was cancerous. B. He needed further tests.
C. The mole was incurable. D. He needed regular treatment.
7. What can we infer from Popovici’s words in the last paragraph?
A. She regretted not acting sooner. B. She wanted Hamilton to thank her.
C. She believed it was pure coincidence. D. She planned the encounter in advance.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. A 7. C

For over seven decades, fluoride (氟化物) has been added to public water supplies in many countries as a dental health strategy. This practice began in 1945 in the U.S. city of Grand Rapids, where scientists first tested water fluoridation to fight widespread tooth decay (衰变). By the 1950s, it became standard public health policy across America, particularly helping children in low-income families access cavity protection. However, recent scientific findings have reignited debates. A 2024 study published in Environmental Health suggested possible links between high fluoride exposure and subtle changes in children’s cognitive development, though researchers stressed these findings require confirmation through further studies.
Fluoride strengthens teeth through two distinct mechanisms. When applied directly — such as through toothpaste — it chemically combines with tooth enamel’s mineral structure, forming a protective barrier against acid attacks from sugary foods. This process, called remineralization, can repair early damage. Systemically, swallowed fluoride enters the bloodstream and gradually releases into saliva, providing continuous enamel reinforcement. Research reveals striking differences between these methods: brushing with fluoride toothpaste delivers 10 times more enamel-protecting fluoride than drinking eight glasses of fluoridated water daily.
Natural sources contribute significantly to fluoride intake. A single cup of brewed tea contains fluoride equal to 1 — 2 liters of treated water, while processed foods made with fluoridated water (like canned soups) add more exposure. Modern children’s primary fluoride source has shifted dramatically since the 1950s. A 2022 analysis showed daily toothbrushing exposes children to fluoride matching 2 — 6 cups of fluoridated water, compared to just half a cup from actual water consumption. This shift explains why some scientists now question the necessity of water fluoridation in areas with good dental care access.
The debate centers on health equity. While fluoride-free alternatives exist, 40% of American children under 12 still develop cavities (龋齿), with rates three times higher in low-income communities. Dental associations argue fluoridated water remains a crucial safety net, especially for families who might forget to brush or lack dental insurance. Current U.S. regulations maintain fluoride levels at 0.7 milligrams per liter — a balance between dental benefits and potential risks. Health authorities recommend continued monitoring, advising parents to oversee young children’s toothpaste use to prevent accidental over consumption.
As global health organizations review new evidence, this decades-old public health practice faces its most serious challenge. The core question remains: How can societies protect vulnerable populations while respecting evolving scientific understanding?
8. What historical fact is mentioned about fluoride use?
A. It was first tested in canned foods. B. It became U.S. policy in the 1920s.
C. Tea companies promoted its benefits. D. Grand Rapids conducted early experiments.
9. How does fluoride repair early-stage tooth decay?
A. Through blood circulation. B. By forming a mineral barrier.
C. By killing all mouth bacteria. D. Through saliva mineral release.
10. Why do some scientists question water fluoridation today?
A. It causes immediate health risks. B. Modern children consume more tea.
C. Canned soups contain excess fluoride. D. Toothpaste provides sufficient fluoride.
11. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Fluoride Sources Comparison: Toothpaste vs Drinking Water.
B. The Historical Success of Water Fluoridation Programs Since 1945.
C. Public Health Dilemma: Reassessing Present Fluoridation Policies.
D. How Fluoride Prevents Childhood Cavities: Mechanisms Explained.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. D 11. C

【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“When applied directly — such as through toothpaste — it chemically combines with tooth enamel’s mineral structure, forming a protective barrier against acid attacks from sugary foods. This process, called remineralization, can repair early damage. (当直接使用时,如通过牙膏,它会与牙釉质的矿物质结构发生化学反应,形成一层保护屏障,抵御含糖食物产生的酸性侵蚀。这一被称为“再矿化”的过程,能够修复早期的牙齿损伤)”可知,氟化物通过形成一种矿物质屏障来修复早期的蛀牙。故选B项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“A 2022 analysis showed daily toothbrushing exposes children to fluoride matching 2 — 6 cups of fluoridated water, compared to just half a cup from actual water consumption. This shift explains why some scientists now question the necessity of water fluoridation in areas with good dental care access. (2022年的一项分析表明,每日刷牙使儿童接触的氟化物量相当于2到6杯氟化水,而实际饮水量仅提供约半杯氟化水的氟含量。这一数据变化解释了为何部分科学家开始质疑在口腔保健普及地区继续推行氟化水政策的必要性)”可知,部分科学家质疑水氟化的必要性是因为牙膏能提供足够的氟化物。故选D项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第四段中“The debate centers on health equity. (争论的核心在于健康公平性)”和最后一段“As global health organizations review new evidence, this decades-old public health practice faces its most serious challenge. The core question remains: How can societies protect vulnerable populations while respecting evolving scientific understanding?

Artificial intelligence-enabled voice cloning tools have made it easier for criminals to imitate strangers’ voices and trick victims into handing over large sums of money.
For example, a scammer might target a victim posing as their grandchild and claiming they require cash fast. Older people who might not be familiar with new technologies such as AI can be particularly subject to these types of scams, particularly when the caller on the other line sounds identical to a loved one.
In 2023, senior citizens were cheated out of roughly $3.4 billion in a range of financial crimes, according to the FBI data. The agency recently warned that AI has increased the “believability” or criminal scams by assisting with content creation and correcting human errors that might otherwise serve as warning signs of a trick.
“So much of the fraud (欺诈)is based on psychology,” Chuck Herrin, field chief information security officer for F5, a security and fraud prevention firm, told CBS MoneyWatch. “They say things that bring about a fear-based emotional response because they know when humans get afraid, we get stupid and don’t exercise the best judgement.”
Cybersecurity experts have a simple but effective recommendation for avoiding getting victimized by such scams: creating a family “safe word” to verify a family member or loved one’s identity. That means choosing a word or phrase that can’t be easily guessed.
“It needs to be unique and should be something that’s difficult to guess,” James Scobey, chief information security officer at Keeper Security, told CBS MoneyWatch. “It shouldn’t be something that can be researched online about you or your family. Avoid street names, towns, phone numbers and individual names as part of a pass phrase.” A safe phrase, consisting of at least four words, offers a greater degree of security, he added.
Using a safe word is a good first line of defense against scammers. So, any time you are asked for financial assistance, always ask for the safe word before transferring any money.
12. What is the threat posed by AI-enabled voice cloning tools?
A. They help strangers create fake identities.
B. They trick victims into giving away money.
C. They increase the believability of a grandchild.
D. They prevent victims from recovering lost funds.
13. What is the psychological strategy used in fraud?
A. Inspiring physical response.
B. Assisting with content creation.
C. Using fright to cause poor judgement.
D. Interrupting the decision-making process.
14. What does the underlined word “verify” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Expose. B. Confirm. C. Suggest. D. Represent.
15. What is recommended when creating a safe phrase?
A. It should be shared with new friends.
B. It should be the same for every family member.
C. It should be easily recalled by family members.
D. It should avoid using personal details found online.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. D

Some of us like to keep some things private — maybe we don’t want people knowing about our relationship status, our age or where we live because these details are personal.____16____.
On our social media accounts, we often display things like our opinions, connections and holiday photos. However, how do we stop everybody seeing everything? Maybe we don’t want a random stranger knowing our favourite type of coffee. ____17____. Now they seem to be popping up on websites. So how can you stay more private?
There are some steps you can take. First, on your social media accounts, check your privacy settings. Many social media platforms allow everything to be visible by default (默认) and the responsibility is on you to set your boundaries. And limiting the amount you share isn’t only confined (限制) to social media. There are many sites out there that help you to share documents so a good tip may be not to put anything too private, like passwords, on there.____18____. Finally, cookies are designed to improve your browsing (浏览) experience by tracking and saving information about your visits to a site, helping to personalize your sessions. ____19____, but there are certain apps which can block them if you don’t feel comfortable.
____20____, maybe only share things you’d be happy with a stranger seeing — and if you don’t feel comfortable with cookies, you might decide to invest in some tech to block them. If that’s not enough, just don’t accept them and visit another site — and why not have a yummy cookie to eat instead?
A. Hopefully, when you take the advice
B. Deleting your browsing history may help
C. So, if you want to maintain your privacy online
D. One mistaken click may send it to the wrong person
E. Try to adjust the settings on each device and browser you use
F. And cookies — there was a time they were just something nice to eat
G. The problem is, everywhere we go online, we seem to leave a digital footprint

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My Parents and I had been planning my brother’s birthday party since the beginning of March. Johnny would be six years old in two weeks. My mom was going to bake her special chocolate cake with white icing. As I watched her, I thought, “I wonder what I can do to make my brother’s birthday special.”
I knew my parents had already bought a present for me to give to Johnny but I wanted to buy him something I had chosen myself and with the money I had saved. After giving it some thought, I wanted to buy him the paint-by-number kit (数字涂色小套装) I had seen at the store around the comer.
I decided to empty my coin jar (存钱罐) and see how much money I had saved. However, I was disappointed to find there was much less than I had imagined. “Oh, no, I only have about three dollars,” I muttered to myself. The set cost more than I had saved.
Suddenly a “great” idea occurred to me. I slid into my parents’ bedroom where my dad kept loose change (零钱) on top of the dresser (梳妆台). I stood on my tiptoes and saw some coins. I carefully counted out what I needed to make up the difference. “I'm sure Dad won't mind just this once,” I thought.
However, I was soon overcome by guilt (负罪感). Even though there was no one else in the bedroom, I felt like I was being watched. Mom was always telling us about the importance of honesty. Maybe my plan wasn't such a great idea after all. However, I still put all the change I found into my own pocket.
I slid out of my parents’ room and headed toward the door. “Where are you going, Arwen? ” Mom asked, “Oh, just up to the corner store,” I replied. “Well, don't stay out too long, Daddy will be home soon.” “Okay, Mom” I ran out of our house.
Once I got to the store, I took the paint-by-number kit from the shelf.
“Can I help you, young lady?” the saleswoman asked.
“No. I'm just looking, thank you,” I said.
“That's a really nice paint kit. We sell a lot of them and, as you can see, that's the last one.” she said.
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1:
I nodded my head in agreement, thinking hard.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
I would just have to wait until I saved the extra money I needed.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
I nodded my head in agreement, thinking hard. Finally, I decided to place the paint-by-number kit back on the shelf and headed home. Luckily, when I got home, Mom was busy talking on the phone and Dad wasn't back home yet, so I was able to slip past the kitchen without being noticed. I went to my parents' room to return the coins I had taken. I arranged them into a neat stack — just like they were before — and sighed with relief, knowing I had done the right thing.
Paragraph 2:
I would just have to wait until I saved the extra money I needed. The saleswoman had even agreed that she would keep the paint kit behind the counter for me until I had enough money to pay for it. I figured I could earn it by doing odd jobs around the house. Then I managed to earn the money I needed and bought the kit just one day before Johnny’s birthday. When opening the gift box at his birthday party, Johnny was wild with joy. “Thank you so much, Arwen.” Johnny said, “This kit is so special!” I smiled with content.

第二节 (满分25分)
I knew my parents had already bought a present for me to give to Johnny, but I wanted to buy him something I had chosen myself and with the money I had saved.
