Every morning,98-year-old Angel Delgadillo opens his gift shop in Seligman,Arizona.
Tourists from around the world come to buy Route 66 souvenirs like T-shirts and key chains.Inside
the shop sits an old chair, where Angel gave haircuts for 75 years.
Route 66 was built in 1926,connecting Chicago to Los Angeles. In its best days, about 9,000
cars passed through Seligman daily. But on September 22,1978,a new freeway opened near
Seligman.Traffic stopped almost overnight.Businesses failed,and many families left.Angel and
his family could not afford to move away.
Route 66 was officially removed from the highway system in 1985.However,travellers still
came to Seligman, sharing memories of driving along the old road with their parents. That gave
Angel an idea.He believed that if the old road became a historic highway, people would return.
So Angel and his wife drove along Route 66,asking businesses to join him.In 1987,they
formed the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona. They wrote many letters and finally talked the
state into declaring(宣告)part of the road“Historic Route66”.After a car race Angel helped
organize received national attention, people from other states called Angel for advice on saving their
parts of the road.Soon all eight states along Route 66 formed their own organizations.
Today, towns like Seligman have come back to life.Angel is called "The Father of the Mother
英语3第3页
Road".He even helped Pixar with the movie Cars, inspiring the fictional town of Radiator Springs.
Visitors line up to shake hands with him and thank him.But Angel says it is not about him-it is
about all the people who worked together. Thanks to one man who refused to give up,Route 66 will
live on forever.
24.How did the freeway opened in 1978 influence Seligman?
A.The number of cars kept rising.
B.People started more companies.
C.The transportation became convenient.D.Local businesses suffered a lot.
25.What inspired Angel to save Route 66?

The C-8 boat looks like a simple speedboat in Stockholm's cold water. But when it speeds up,
something amazing happens:it takes off!The electric boat's body lifts out of the water and flies half
a meter above the surface, held up by three thin supports.
These supports are connected to "hydrofoils"-wings that work underwater. They lift the boat
up,which greatly reduces drag()and saves up to 80%of the energy needed to move.Digital
equipment on the boat checks the waves and reconciles the wings 100 times every second, making
the ride feel very smooth.
Its maker says these electric hydrofoils are extremely suitable for city travel. They are quiet,
produce no pollution, and cost very little to run.Because they create only small waves, they can go
faster in cities where boat speed is often limited.Supporters believe they can help reduce traffic on
crowded roads by using city waterways more.
Light weight is important for the boat's performance. Therefore, boat makers use carbon fibre
(碳纤维),a material that is strong and extremely light. This has been key to making hydrofoils
possible.Besides, these boat makers apply used electric vehicle engines and batteries, lowering
costs and supporting common vehicle charging units.
In short, new technology is changing the boat industry.Hydrofoils will become the normal way
to travel fast on water within ten years. As a matter of fact, nearly half of people around the world
live near coasts, and many city roads are too busy.Using waterways-or "blue highways"-makes
a lot of sense, first for people and later for goods.Today, although these flying boats cannot carry
vehicles across oceans, they are perfect for short passenger trips in city waters.
28.What does the text say about the C-8 boat?
A.It runs on electricity.
B.It can hold many passengers.
C.It requires no supports.
D.It can travel fully under water.
29.What does the underlined word "reconciles"in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Locates.
B.Cleans.
C.Repairs.

C.By simplifying production processes.
D.By removing unnecessary equipment.
31.What is the author's attitude towards hydrofoils?
A.Hopeful.
B.Doubtful.

Recently, scientist Thomas Chouvenc made a worrying discovery in a Florida park:a wild
group of hybrid termites(杂交白蚁).These new termites are the babies of two of the most harmful
termite species on Earth:the Formosan and Asian subterranean termites.Every year, these two
parent species cause losses of about $20 billion around the world,as they eat away wood and even
damage electric wires by biting.Unsurprisingly, their hybrid young are likely to be even more
harmful.
This dangerous hybrid is part of a growing natural phenomenon that challenges old scientific
beliefs.Researchers used to believe that different animal species could not mix to produce healthy
young. But in fact,cross-species hybridization has become increasingly common in nature. Many
hybrid creatures look almost the same as their parents,so people can only tell their mixed genes(
apart through scientific tests.
Different from weak and unable-to-reproduce hybrids like mules and ligers, these hybrid
termites have clear "hybrid vigor".They develop better survival abilities that their parent species
do not have.Lab tests prove they can live in a wider range of temperatures, which makes them
more adaptable to the environment.
However, though such strong adaptability helps living things survive climate change and live in
terrible environments,it brings serious ecological (problems. These powerful hybrid
termites can spread fast and take over large areas that their parents cannot reach.Meanwhile, the
mixing of different species will lower biological diversity()and put native species at risk of
disappearing forever.
In short, whether species mixing is good or bad depends on its role in nature. The super
adaptive and fast-spreading hybrid termites in Florida may destroy local ecological balance.Their
unclear spread range and great destructive power are exactly what make scientists feel extremely
worried.
32.What can be learned about the two parent termite species?
A.They prefer to live alone.
B.They cause huge damage globally
C.They are newly-found insect species.D.They produce babies at an alarming speed.
33.What has changed scientists'idea about cross-species hybridization?
A.The common gene structure of wild creatures.
B.The scientific test on harmful animal species.
C.The wide existence of healthy cross-species creatures.
D.The different appearance of hybrids and their parents.
34.Why does the author mention mules and ligers?
A.To stress the unique strengths of hybrid termites.
B.To show the weaknesses of newly-born insect species.
C.To compare different living habits of hybrid creatures.
D.To prove the wide popularity of cross-species animals.

35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?

B.The Ecological Impact of Hybrid Termites
C.The Development of Species Hybridization
D.Effects of Climate Change on Insect Survival

Bree,a middle school teacher, was packing up her desk in the teachers'room when the bell
rang.It had been such a tiring week, and she was glad the day was over. Finally free for the
weekend, she walked out of the school to catch her bus, determined to leave her worries behind.
As Bree waited at the bus stop, she noticed the little boy sitting quietly beside the woman
again.Unlike the other noisy kids, the boy was serious, looking carefully at a plastic bag
containing a single goldfish. The scene repeated itself every Friday for two months.Every week,
the boy bought a goldfish and looked sad.Bree's curiosity was gradually replaced with deep
concern. Why did he always look so sad?Why a goldfish every week?It was as if the boy was
carrying a heavy burden()that no child should bear.
This time,Bree decided to ask him.She approached the boy and introduced herself. For a
moment, the boy just looked at her, very confused and frightened. The woman, who turned out to
be the boy's mother, said,"This is my son Tom.He is in the same school as you.He picks up a
goldfish each week.Through deeper communication,Bree learned that Tom's beloved dog he'd
raised for years had gone missing. After searching everywhere carefully,Tom failed to find it.In
order to avoid another painful loss caused by a pet's disappearance,he turned to goldfish, thinking
they could never run away.
On the bus,Tom's mother told Bree that Tom had stopped speaking and eating properly ever
since his dog went missing. His only routine()was buying a goldfish every Friday, which
usually died by mid-week.Hearing those words,Bree felt her heart aching for the poor boy.She
knew the frequent death of his goldfish kept reopening his wound, leaving him trapped in endless
