后文体现小心翼翼呵护花园,take care of符合语境;falls in love with侧重喜爱,has a look at只是看一看,均无法体现细心看护。 “who wants to hear the story”作定语修饰空格单词,anyone表示“任何人”;someone多用于肯定陈述句,no one“没有人”与句意矛盾。 be made of意为“由…… turn...into... A Come to Dover! ▲ An old town in England ▲ Three famous places to visit: Nutshell (famous for its beer), Abbey (a church with more than 1,000 years’ history), King Shop. ▲ Single (单人的) room: £50 a night, including breakfast. ▲ Double room: £95 a night, including breakfast. ▲ Open on July 10th. He tried to get a job as a government official (官员), but he failed. When he arrived home, his family looked down on him and didn’t want to speak to him. His sister-in-law (嫂子) treated him worst and even refused to offer any food to him. Su Qin felt very sad, but he didn’t give up. He studied hard every day, and finally became good at the zong-heng principle Later on, Su Qin travelled to many states and explained his idea to the kings. He told them that small states should join together to fight against the strong state, Qin. Luckily, his idea was accepted by two states, Yan and Zhao. Then the kings of the two states asked him to persuade other states to use his idea. In the end, Su Qin joined six states and became the prime minister (丞相) of them. One day, Su Qin passed by his hometown. His parents, brother, wife and sister-in-law all came out to welcome him. When he saw his sister-in-law, he laughed. He still remembered how she treated him in the past. Then he asked her, “You were impolite to me before. But why do you look up to me now?” His sister-in-law answered, “You are an official now, so I dare (敢于) not treat you like before.” This is the story of the Chinese idiom qianjuhougong It describes that someone treats a person badly at first, but later respects him because of his high status (地位). 24. Why did Su Qin’s family treat him badly at first? A. Because he didn’t join six states together. B. Because he didn’t want to speak to them. C. Because he failed to be a government official. 25. What does the underlined word “persuade” mean in Paragraph 2? 26. What can we know from the third paragraph? A. Su Qin’s sister-in-law changed her attitude to him. B. Su Qin was moved after seeing his family welcome him. C. Su Qin’s sister-in-law didn’t come out to welcome him finally. 27. What does this story try to tell us? A. We should share our ideas with others. B. We should not look down on other people. C. We should try to protect ourselves always. C 25. B 26. A 27. 【24题详解】 第一段指出“He tried to get a job as a government official, but he failed...his family looked down on him”,因此苏秦的家人最初对他不好是因为他未能成为政府官员。 【25题详解】 第二段指出“the kings of the two states asked him to persuade other states to use his idea”,结合语境,苏秦需要说服其他国家采纳他的主张,“persuade”意为“说服”。 【26题详解】 第三段指出“his parents, brother, wife and sister-in-law all came out to welcome him...He still remembered how she treated him in the past”,表明嫂子的态度从之前的冷遇转变为欢迎,故态度发生了改变。 C Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: Music helps develop certain language abilities in the brain. A study from Northwestern University shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were found to be able to hear the talking person more clearly. “Musicians hear better,” says study leader Nina Kraus, “because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. For example, when the violinists play in an orchestra (管弦乐队), they must listen closely to what they are playing and ignore (忽视) the other sounds. In this way, musicians can hear certain sounds better, even in a room with lots of noise.” Gottfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke (中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find singing words helped his patients finally speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to be able to make different parts of the brain active, including the bad parts. As a result, this helps patients use those parts of the brain again. So music is not only enjoyable, but also good for us in many other ways. “Playing an instrument or singing,” says Nina Kraus, “can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp (灵敏的) as we get older.” 28. What were the people in the first group asked to do in the study of Northwestern University? A. To listen to what the talking person was saying. B. To give the second group some musical training. C. To learn different kinds of music in a noisy room. 29. Why does the writer use the example of violinists in Paragraph 3? A. To tell us how musicians ignore certain sounds. B. To explain why musicians have better hearing ability. C. To find out how musicians play instruments in an orchestra. 30. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A. Stroke patients can still sing. B. Singing words helped the stroke patients finally speak. C. Music seems to be able to make bad parts of the brain active. 31. Which is the best title of the passage? A. A Useful Study on Hearing Problems B. Different Kinds of Musical Instruments C. How Music Improves Language and Brain 【答案】28. A 29. B 30. C 31. 【28题详解】 第二段指出“As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians”,因此第一组的人被要求听说话者在嘈杂房间中的讲话内容。 【29题详解】 第三段以小提琴手为例,说明“they must listen closely to what they are playing and ignore the other sounds”,从而解释了音乐家为什么听觉能力更强,即他们学会了专注于特定的声音而忽视杂音。 【30题详解】 第四段指出“Music seems to be able to make different parts of the brain active, including the bad parts...this helps patients use those parts of the brain again”,因此“this”指代的是前一句提到的音乐使大脑部分(包括受损部分)活跃起来这一现象。 Every year, wildfires destroy (摧毁) tens of thousands of square kilometres of forest land. People lose their homes and some are hurt or even killed. Smokejumpers help stop this. Smokejumpers are special firefighters. Some fires are in hard-to-reach areas, such as in the middle of a mountain forest. These firefighters jump from planes or are lowered into those areas by helicopter (直升机). When they arrive, smokejumpers first check the land and decide how to fight the fire. Their main job is to stop the fire from spreading (传播) until other firefighters arrive. Smokejumpers use shovels (铲子) or axes (斧子) to clear the land of burnable things, like dry grass and dead trees. They carry water with them too, but not a lot. Most smokejumpers are men, but more women are joining now. The most important things are height and weight. Smokejumpers in the US, for example, must be between 54 and 91 kilograms. This way, they don’t get blown away by the strong winds or get hurt when they land. Smokejumpers also need to know how to survive in the wild. In Russia, many smokejumpers know how to find food in the forest and can even make simple furniture (家具) from trees. The work is dangerous, and the working hours are long. But for these firefighters, smokejumping isn’t just a job. They love being able to jump out of planes, fight fires and live in the forest. Wang Yamin, a Chinese smokejumper, says, “This is the best job for tough (坚强的) people.” 32. How do smokejumpers get to hard-to-reach areas? ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 33. What is smokejumpers’ main duty? ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 34. B. We should share our ideas with others. B. We should not look down on other people. C. We should try to protect ourselves always. C Is there a connection between music and language? How Music Improves Language and Brain D Every year, wildfires destroy (摧毁) tens of thousands of square kilometres of forest land.
