Weiqi, also known as Go in English, is a black and white board game from ancient China. The game is considered one of the Four Arts for ancient Chinese literators (文人) to master. Besides Weiqi, they had to learn Chinese calligraphy (shu), painting (hua) and guqin playing (qin).
Weiqi has a history of over 4,000 years, even older than Chinese chess. Old books show people called it Yi long long ago. People say Emperor Yao invented it. His son was easy to get angry and hated studying, which made Yao worried. He wanted a good way to teach his son, and then he created this board game.
The rules of Weiqi are easy to learn. Two players use black and white stones, and they take turns placing stones on the empty crossing points of the board. Players try to get more space on the board. At the same time, they must stop their stones from being caught by the other player. Once stones are fully surrounded, they will be taken away from the board and cannot move anymore.
Lots of old Chinese paintings show people playing Weiqi. When a player holds a stone above the board and thinks about where to put it, the scene turns into a popular Chinese idiom. It describes people who feel unsure to make a choice. We still use this idiom a lot in our daily life now.
With its development, Weiqi grew more popular. Later, it spread to other Asian countries and Western countries. Today, it has become an international board game.

Many schools in China are adding popular sports to their PE classes, giving students new ways to stay active. At Tsinghua University High School in Beijing, rock climbing (攀岩) is one such activity. Through the sport, students can improve their confidence and focus (专注力).
The school introduced rock climbing in 2023. Since then, students in grades 7, 8 and 10 have had weekly climbing lessons. A climbing club is also open to all students, allowing more people to try the sport.
Inside the school, there is a 15-meter-high climbing wall. In class, students carefully make their way up, using strength and focus for each step and handhold (把手点).
Student Lin Qingnong, 15, said climbing is not only about reaching the top. “You need to think about where your hands and feet should go,” he said. “You also need to find a safer path that saves energy.”
Rock climbing is fun, but students must stay safe. The school invites professional coaches from China University of Geosciences (中国地质大学) to teach and look after students in each class.
The activity also teaches them not to give up easily. Student Jia Qinkai, 14, shared his experience of pushing past his limits (极限). “Even when your body feels tired, you still want to climb one more step,” he said. “I enjoy challenging myself and getting closer to my goal. ”
