Last Sunday morning, I was sitting on the sofa in my parent’s living room. Before me on the tea table was a worn journal of thin and discolored pages. It was my grandfather’s journal and now belongs to my father. My grandfather had passed away in the months leading up to my birth. I never got to visit the places he had frequented and the people who had been a part of his life’s journey.
I was now about to enter his world, through the words he had left behind. Within minutes, I was touched by the power of the written words. In the magical script before me, I was transported to another age when food was planned, prepared and enjoyed in the company of others, and a time when people had the heart to pause their own lives to embrace each other’s struggles. All this was conveyed to me in the beauty of the words that flowed together to connect with the writer’s mind and understand the world they lived in.
This kind of writing seems to be lost on us today. We have gotten used to writing in bite-sized pieces for a public looking for entertainment, and hungry for information. No wonder, there are nearly 200 million bloggers on the Internet and a new blog is created somewhere in the world every half a second. Instead of adding to our wisdom, most of these writings reflect the superficiality (肤浅) and impatience of our day and age.
This not only steals our skills of writing impressive essays, it also prevents us from exploring what is indeed important. Writing teaches us in a way that is important for our character growth, by reminding us about the limits of the self and our right place in the flow of life.
Writing frees us by helping us explore the unknown so that we really open up to the magic of the world around us. I saw all of this in the writing of my grandfather. And I’ve seen it again and again in the writings of the greatest thinkers of humanity. Their writing reflects deep thought on issues of human importance.
24. According to the author, what is a feature of the age described in his grandfather’s journal?
A. Mutual support. B. Artistic food. C. Popular diaries. D. Public entertainment.
25. What is the main purpose of the third paragraph?
A. To give internet statistics. B. To contrast past and present writing.
C. To promote traditional media. D. To blame the public’s tastes.
26. What message does the author convey in the last two paragraphs?
A. Writing skills ensure success. B. Writing shows reality.
C. Writing shapes character and personality. D. Only great thinkers’ works are valuable.
27. What is the author’s attitude towards his grandfather’s writing?
A. Critical B. Confused C. Indifferent D. Admiring
C
Deep in the underwater world, animals like starfish use unusual ways to escape hunters. In an act called autotomy, starfish drop one or more of their arms to survive attacks. The lost body part perturbs the attacker, allowing the starfish to run away quickly. Over time, the starfish can grow back the lost arm, returning to their usual life after a brush with death.
A few years ago, Maurice Elphick, who studied starfish behavior at Queen Mary University of London, and Ana Tinoco, a postdoctoral researcher, often saw starfish missing one or more arms when they collected these creatures along beaches. Amazed by this observation, they decided to investigate how the autotomy works.
Recently, Elphick’s team discovered a molecule (分子) that helps starfish drop their arms. Researchers found that a neuropeptide (神经肽) called ArSK/CCK1 controls this process. When injected into starfish, the molecule caused some of them to drop their arms.
However, not all starfish injected with this neuropeptide lost their arms. This suggests that the molecule works with other factors, like stress. To test this, scientists pressed starfish arms with a special tool. When stressed and injected with the neuropeptide, most starfish dropped their arms.
This study showed that the neuropeptide may soften and break tissues (细胞组织) at the base of the starfish arm, which is an important step in autotomy. Researchers also found that the molecule exists in starfish even when they are not losing arms, ready to act when needed, since starfish are often attacked by hunters mid-meal.
“It’s a really beautiful study,” said Emily Claereboudt, a biologist at the University of Bergen. “The study can provide insights into similar molecules in humans, which may eventually help improve tissue regeneration. But that would be a long-term goal.” Elphick agreed. For now, Elphick is excited about the results. “I hope this will deepen our understanding of autotomy and regeneration across the animal kingdom,” he said.
28. What can we know about autotomy
A. It is starfish’s survival skill. B. It allows starfish to grow fast.
C. It is starfish’s unique ability. D. It helps starfish hunt for food.
29. Which best explains “perturbs” underlined in the first paragraph? )
A. Searches for carefully. B. Draws someone’s attention.
C. Count on unwillingly. D. Warmly welcomes someone.
30. What did Elphick’s research find?
A. How starfish cut ties with their arms.
B. How hunters manage to attack starfish.
C. How starfish recover from serious injuries.
D. How wild animals survive natural disasters.
31. What did Claereboudt expect of the study?
A. It’ll avoid misunderstanding about molecules.
B. It’ll change our attitude towards cute animals.
C. It’ll inspire new ideas for human tissue repair.
D. It’ll ask us to put effort into wildlife protection.
D
A recent study on digital human (数字人) industry has uncovered a noticeable trend: more and more people are forming deep emotional bonds with AI-powered digital humans, which are widely used as virtual companions, online idols and customer service agents. Though whether these digital humans have real emotional feedback remains unproved, this trend has greatly widened the split in the existing cultural and ethical divide.
Ethicist Professor Zhang Wei has clearly outlined the two sides of this divide: “One side will accuse (指控) the other of dangerously being addicted in virtual relationships and escaping real social communications, while the other will argue the first group as refusing to accept the new form of emotional connection in the digital age.” His concern is not unreasonable. Today, some people already share their deepest secrets with digital humans and even treat them as life partners, while others laugh off the idea as nothing more than “confusing programmed responses with real feelings”.
So what might a digital human with widely recognized “emotional value” look like? Imagine a lifelong companion that listens to your troubles, celebrates your achievements, accompanies you through hard times, and even grows and changes with you over the years. Crucially, this companion will have a continuous “memory” and form a unique interaction mode with you, much like a real friend. While today’s digital humans are not yet at this stage, they are developing at an amazing speed. When that future arrives, more intense conflicts over their status and rights will be unavoidable.
History offers similar examples. Consider the wide acceptance of telephones, which were once strongly opposed by people who argued that they would destroy face-to-face communication and weaken real human relationships, even decades after they became popular. There’s no reason that the debate over digital humans’ emotional value will be any different. What’s worse, unlike telephones whose function is clearly defined, we have no unified standard to judge whether the emotional connection with digital humans is “real” or valuable.
Undoubtedly, these deepening divisions will reshape our legal rules, social norms and even family concepts. That’s why now — before the divide becomes too deep to bridge — is the key moment to act. We need to build a reasonable ethical and legal framework for the digital age through in-depth and rational discussion, and guide society forward in an orderly way, rather than let the division divide us apart.
32. What is the core message of Paragraph 1?
A. Digital humans can provide real emotional feedback.
B. Digital humans are widely used in the service industry.
C. The popularity of digital humans has widened social ethical divide.
D. People have reached an agreement on digital humans.
33. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. People all agree that sharing secrets with digital humans is a normal emotional experience.
B. Current digital humans already possess complete continuous memory and can grow alongside users.
C. There has been a universal standard to assess the authenticity of emotional bonds with digital humans.
D. People once worried that telephones would damage offline communication and human bonds.
34. Why is “the wide acceptance of telephones” mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A. To stress the importance of digital technology development.
B. To prove telephones have changed people’s way of communication.
C. To show the debate over digital humans will last long.
D. To deny the value of face-to-face communication.
35. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce the development of digital humans.
B. To explain the function of digital humans.
C. To solve the conflict over digital humans.
D. To call for early action to deal with the coming ethical divide.

As someone who’s been saving money for her first trip in the new year, I certainly have my fears and reservations. My brain keeps trying to scare me with worst-case situations and excuses to stay home. But the entire point of traveling is to get yourself out of your comfort zone. 36. ________
Start small.
Many people assume that travelling requires week-long or even month-long trips to resorts or expensive hotels, but true exploration doesn’t have to be costly. Begin with short, manageable trips to build confidence. A nearby overnight stay, a dinner reservation at a local restaurant, a small-town hotel, or a weekend escape to a city you’ve long wanted to visit — all count as meaningful first steps. 37. ________ Once you’re comfortable being alone, gradually extend your travels or travel farther. Starting small prevents overwhelming (压垮) yourself, which could avoid killing the interest in travel entirely.
38. ________
When you plan your first travel trip, make sure you have a light schedule to follow. That way, you don’t show up unprepared or overwhelmed by choices. For instance, I’m designing my New England trip as a mini writer’s retreat: visiting specific cafes, exploring charming downtowns, spending time in nature and writing in my hotel. I have a list of must-try eateries, landmarks, and shops. 39. ________ I just outlined key experiences I’m excited about. A loose plan helps guide you without limiting your choices.
Take the proper safety prevention.
Traveling can be frightening. No matter how long you’ve been traveling, you might still feel scared on your journey. This is completely reasonable, but it doesn’t mean you should avoid travels altogether. Instead, focus on what you can do to stay safe. 40. ________ Also, stay aware of your surroundings, follow basic safety measures, and trust your intuition. Those steps will help you feel secure as you embrace your adventure.
A. I’m not over-scheduling.
B. Plan every detail in advance.
C. Create a plan that inspires and excites you.
D. Here’s how to start traveling in the new year.
E. For example, you should never travel alone to remote areas.
F. Then gradually build your ability to enjoy your own company.
G. For instance, choose a well-researched destination and a trusted place to stay.

It was supposed to be the best day of our school trip. Our class had set off early to hike up Green Hill, laughing and chatting as we climbed through the bright morning sunshine. By noon we had almost reached the top, proud of how far we had come. The view from the slope was lovely, and nothing seemed to worry us.
Then, without warning, the weather changed. A thick grey fog rolled in from the valley, and within minutes we could barely see the classmate walking just ahead. The cheerful voices died away, and a worried silence fell over the group. Some of us had no idea which way led back down the hill. What had felt like an easy, happy walk now seemed strange and a little frightening. Some students quietly reached out to hold the hands of those beside them.
Our teacher, Mr. Wang, told everyone to stop and stay exactly where they were. “Nobody moves alone,” he said firmly. A few students looked frightened, and one girl began to cry softly. The path we had walked up so happily had completely disappeared into the white mist around us. For a few long moments, nobody knew quite what to do, and the cold air pressed in around us. We all turned to look at one another, each hoping someone would be brave enough to speak first. Mr. Wang’s calm voice was the only steady thing in the swirling fog.
Taking a deep breath, we calmed down and tried to think of a way out.

At last, the fog began to thin, and we walked safely out of the hill.
