Before I was in Grade Eight, I didn’t like to help others. I would get irritated when someone asked me for help. Then things changed.
One cloudy day, when I was walking to school, I met a tall man. Carrying a long thin stick and wearing sunglasses, he stood at the crossing. I found this a little strange as it was early in the morning and yet he was wearing sunglasses. But I didn’t think much about it and crossed the road.
When I reached the other side, suddenly I heard cars sounding their horns (喇叭). I turned around and saw that the man was in the middle of the road. It seemed that he was too scared to move. Just then, I knew that the man wasn’t able to see. I ran quickly back to him and helped him cross the road. The man turned his head to me and said, “Thank you very much for your kind help.”
It made me feel good to hear those words. In fact, I felt so good that I asked him where he was going and if he needed more help. He told me that he was going to a supermarket, which was not far from my school. I walked with him to the supermarket and then went to school.

Do you have your dream job? What job do you want to have when you grow up? When I was a little girl, I always dreamed of being different kinds of people. At first, I wanted to be a teacher because I thought it was cool to teach students new knowledge. I could see the sweet smiles on their faces when they understood something new. It felt like I was lighting up their minds. But later, after watching many exciting medical dramas on TV, I changed my mind. I hoped to become a doctor. I was deeply drawn by how doctors worked under pressure, using their skills to pull patients back from the edge of death. It seemed so amazing to me.
Now, as a middle school student, my dream is to be a scientist. I really like science, especially chemistry. I love doing experiments (实验) in the science lab (实验室) at school. They are the source of wonder. Every time I see a chemical reaction (反应) happen, I feel so excited. I believe that science can change the world. I dream to make some great scientific discoveries in the future. Maybe I can find new ways to make our environment cleaner or develop better medicines to help sick people. I even dream of walking on the moon or even travelling to Mars one day.
I know that the path to becoming a scientist is long and full of difficulties. But I’m ready. To make my dream come true, I am working hard at all subjects, especially math and science. No “I” in “Team”
At noon on 24 May 1960, four climbers stood alone on the “roof of the world”. They were near the top of a thirty-meter-high wall of rock. It was called the Second Step. The top of Mount Qomolangma seemed right within reach. But no one had ever climbed the last few meters of the Second Step before.
Liu Lianman led the way. He tried four times. Each time, he fell back into the snow. The thin air took his strength away. “I’m not strong enough to try again,” he thought. So he chose to be a “human ladder” for his teammates! He lowered his body and let Qu Yinhua stand on his shoulders. Slowly, bit by bit, Liu stood up and helped Qu climb to the top. Every second was painful, but Liu stood still. And he did the same for Gong Bu. Then he and Wang Fuzhou climbed up with a rope.
But Liu was too tired to keep going. The team were worried, but they had to carry on. They gave Liu all their oxygen. It was dangerous to climb without oxygen, but they knew Liu needed it. They made every effort through the cold and dark. Hours later, they reached the top of the towering mountain at 4:20 am on 25 May. They were the first Chinese to do so! They were also the first people to climb the difficult North Ridge. What’s more, no one had done so without using oxygen!

Dear You (A Love Letter to Grandma) is a movie from Chaoshan, China. It tells a touching story about love, family, and keeping promises.
The main character is Grandma Ye Shurou. She waited for her husband for 50 years after he went to Nanyang (Southeast Asia) to find work. But her husband never came back.
Her grandson, Xiaowei, owes (欠) money to others. He runs away to Thailand. While there, he also wants to learn about his grandfather. But he finds out a big secret: the person who wrote letters and sent money to Grandma all her life was not her husband. It was a stranger named Xie Nanzhi.
In the old days, many people from Chaoshan went to Nanyang to work. They sent letters and money home called Qiaopi. These letters were full of love and care for their families. In 2013, Qiaopi was added to the UNESCO Memory of the World Register (世界记忆名录) because it shows the deep love and duty Chinese people have for their families and homeland.
Xie Nanzhi was thankful to Grandma’s husband. After he died, she kept writing letters and sending money to help Grandma’s family. She did this for many years.
