On April 19, 2026, a special marathon (马拉松) was held in Beijing. Around 12,000 human runners and more than 300 human-like robots began the 2026 Beijing E-Town Half Marathon together. It was the world’s first half-marathon for both humans and two-legged robots on the same road.
A Chinese-made robot named “Lightning” finished the 21km race in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, breaking the human world record for half marathon. But another robot ran even faster at first. Since it was controlled by people from far away, its time was changed by the game rules. Finally, Lightning became the real champion, for it ran without any human control.
Great progress has taken place in robot tech since 2025. Last year’s robot marathon winner spent over 160 minutes finishing the race, and most robots needed workers’ help to run. However, nearly 40% of robot teams could finish the race all by themselves this year with the help of sensors (传感器) and cameras.
The marathon means much more than a competition. Running on difficult roads helps robots improve their battery (电池), heat control and quick reaction skills. Such skills make robots helpful for factory work, housework and disaster rescue in our daily life.
In a word, this special marathon shows the fast development of Chinese robot technology. We believe robots will become smarter and play a more important role in people’s daily life in the future.
36. What makes the 2026 Beijing E-Town Half Marathon special?
A. It was shown in a science fiction movie.
B. Only robots took part in the marathon.
C. The race distance was longer than usual.
D. Humans and humanoid robots ran on the same course.
37. How many robot players took part in the marathon?
A. Over 300 B. About 500 C. About 12,000 D. Over 2100
