In Baltimore’s Ellwood Park neighbourhood, the Hipp Laundromat (自助式洗衣店) gets crowded with nearby residents. But during the washing process, they’re often idle. Alongside the washers and driers, a new station with laptops and tablets in the corner is providing internet access. It’s part of a new programme called the Wash and Learn Initiative (WALI) at this and three other laundromats, started by Enoch Pratt Free Library and Libraries Without Borders.
The devices are loaded with classes and other offerings from the library. At two of the laundromats, librarians will also be on hand to provide programming around digital skills and one-on-one guidance. “You’ve got 30 minutes where everything’s in the dryer and there’s nothing to do. That’s when you can sit down at a computer, and ask a librarian to help you reset your E-mail password and to do the stuff that you aren’t comfortable doing on your own,” said Lo Smith, a leader of WALI.
WALI also aims to provide digital access in areas where residents can benefit from neighbourhood internet connectivity. A report released in 2017 stated that more than 74,000 households in Baltimore lack internet access. “Without a wired internet connection at home, kids can’t do their homework, people can’t apply for jobs.” said Jane Brown, president of the Deutsch Foundation.
Adam Echelman, Director of Libraries Without Borders, said the setting is ideal: along with being a place where people have to stick around for multiple hours, it’s also near a specific community and draws repeat users. For those new to technology, librarians can also help break an emotional barrier coming with learning something new, Smith said. “It helps to have someone who understands where you are, to walk you through some of the harder parts and to coach and support you along the way.”
24. What does the underlined word “idle” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Bored. B. Lonely. C. Busy. D. Sleepy.
25. How do the librarians support residents in WALI?
A. By assisting people with job hunting. B. By supporting kids in school learning.
C. By providing users with digital devices. D. By guiding residents to digital resources.
26. Why does the author mention the 2017 report?
A. To prove the necessity of digital access.
B. To indicate the number of city households.
C. To show the limitation of home computers.
D. To explain the absence of wired connections.
27. What are the major advantages of WALI?
A. Free devices and faster Internet.
B. Digital courses and job opportunities.
C. Perfect sites and emotional support.
D. Expert librarians and in-person classes.

There is more evidence that green does a brain good. School-aged children who have long-term exposure (接触) to green space are more focused and experience improved memory, according to a recent study conducted by researchers at University of California, Los Angeles. The research links, for the first time, improved cognitive (认知) function to structural changes in the developing brain. The findings could have global meanings, as half the world live in urban areas where access to nature can be limited.
The researchers found that children raised in homes surrounded by natural environment had more activity in brain regions associated with learning and the ability to engage with others. They also experienced less distraction and sharper memory — key indicators of academic and social success. A previous study had similar results: children attending schools with significant green space were more focused than those with less.
But why exposure to greenery has beneficial effects on the brain is anybody’s guess. “Lower levels of noise and air pollution could be factors,” said study coauthor Michael Jerrett. He also noted that people with better access to parks tend to be more physically active and have lower rates of mental illness. Besides, “biophilia hypothesis (亲生命假说) suggests humans have an inborn tendency toward nature, which affords children opportunities for creativity, risk-taking, and psychological restoration — all believed to aid brain development.”
The benefits of green space, however, are not shared by every community. In Los Angeles, 45% of residents in low-income neighbourhoods lack walkable access to a park. “These gaps are not accidental,” said Robert Garcia, founding director of the City Project, who blame them for unbalanced housing and land use practices.
Some progress has been made. In 2016, Measure A was passed to expand parks and improve facilities, giving priority to low-income communities. “As we get more and more of this evidence, it’s the duty of urban planners to start looking at nature as a very positive solution to many urban problems,” said Jerrett.
28. What is the key finding of the recent study?
A. Urban living harms focus. B. Nature improves brain development.
C. City life limits green space. D. Greenness makes children successful.
29. How does the author explain the beneficial effects of greenery?
A. By quoting research data. B. By offering various examples.
C. By listing possible causes. D. By comparing opposite views.
30. Why are the benefits of green space not shared by every community?
A. Funding shortage. B. Limited urban space.
C. Environmental issues. D. Unequal city planning.
31. What would Michael Jerrett probably suggest?
A. Further studies on brain health. B. More parks in poor neighbourhoods.
C. Stronger reduction in pollution. D. Larger investment in local economy.
D
It is well known that dogs can be trained to detect changes in levels of cortisol, a hormone (荷尔蒙) that floods the body in times of stress. But researchers wondered how smelling changes in cortisol might impact dogs’ emotional state.
To find out, researchers first put human volunteers through a stress test and then rewarded them with a video of natural scenes in comfortable chairs. During both activities, researchers measured multiple stress indicators, including cortisol levels, heart rate and self-reported anxiety. They also collect samples (样本) of people’s breath and sweat by sticking pieces of cloth under their armpits (腋窝).
Meanwhile, 18 dogs of different species were trained to learn that a food bowl on one side always contained a food reward, while a bowl on the opposite side was always empty. Over time, the dogs were fast to approach the full bowl and slow to the empty one. Then researchers removed the two bowls and placed a third one. This is where the sweaty cloths comes in. The dogs were led to smell the cloths before a bowl was put in front of them.
Researchers ran the test multiple times, with both stressed and relaxed smells in different orders and the bowls in all three locations. They found that the dogs were more hesitant to approach the bowl after smelling the scent of a stressed stranger, meaning they were more pessimistic that it would have any food in it. The relaxed scent, in contrast, didn’t have a measurable effect.
Although the study relies on volunteers who aren’t known to the dogs, Parr-Cortes, the lead author of the study at Bristol Veterinary School, says it shows that the dogs’ response is universal rather than learned. “This study highlights how trained dogs are at picking up on mood. It’s a good idea to keep in mind that situations that are stressful for humans are probably also stressful for dogs. So fun engagement is the best way to have a good relationship and a happy dog.”
32. Why did the researchers collect sweaty cloths?
A. To identify stress levels.
B. To measure changes in cortisol.
C. To analyse sweat samples.
D. To expose the dogs to the scents.
33. How did the scientists carry out the research?
A. By recording the dogs’ training process. B. By reviewing volunteers’ anxiety reports.
C. By tracking volunteers’ emotional responses. D. By comparing the dogs’ behavioural changes.
34. What made the dogs hesitate to approach the bowl?
A. Feeling sick from the smell. B. Expecting no food in the bowl.
C. Sensing threats from strangers. D. Noticing differences in location.
35. What can we know from Parr-Cortes’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Human emotions are hard to hide.
B. Dogs can be trained to sense stress.
C. Playful interaction makes happy dogs.
D. Stressful situation should be avoided.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Resilience (回弹力) has become a career popular word for good reason. It’s an important tool for many aspects of our working lives, from dealing with a competitive job market to knowing how to respond when promotions pass us by. The ability to work through hardships at work should never be underestimated. It’s easy to misunderstand resilience as something you are either born with or without. 36 Here’s how:
Set yourself career goals
Setting personal goals can help create a sense of achievement when you meet them. These goals don’t need to be far out of reach. 37 This in turn creates a positive mindset that builds mental resilience.
Understand what’s realistic
The “everyone’s a winner” culture taught in schools may help improve self-confidence, but it doesn’t prepare us for the often severe realities of what lies ahead. The competitive graduate job market can be a huge shock to high-flying students. They expected every effort to bring success. They have previously experienced few barriers to success. 38 Learning not to take rejection personally is important. Growing from these experiences helps you move forward.
Learn to give and receive support
When difficulty strikes at work, the people around us are often best placed to help. 39 Colleagues are more willing to do this when you have been supportive and cooperative.
Look after your health
Coping with difficult times at work is much easier when both your body and mind are fit and healthy. Eating well, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep are essential steps. Taking regular breaks at work helps. 40
A. Creating clear work-life boundaries also helps.
B. It can be emotional support or practical advice.
C. But it can be built with a few simple techniques.
D. It is often the first time they have to face rejection.
E. Such a positive attitude can improve your work efficiency.
F. Teachers should offer more practical career lessons at school.
G. Smaller and more achievable targets help us experience success.

M: And are there any special shows right now?
W: We have a fascinating one on ancient Egypt.
(Text 4)
W: Can you tell me about your previous experience?
M: I’ve worked in marketing for the past five years.
W: And what skills do you think are most related to this position?
M: I believe my project management and communication skills will be valuable.
(Text 5)
W: I’m planning a trip to Paris. Can you help me book a hotel?
M: Of course! What’s your preferred location?
W: I’d like something in the city center, but not too expensive.
M: I have a few choices that might suit you.

M: Have you heard the weather report? It sounds as if we’re expecting a drop in temperature.
W: Yes. Snow is expected.
M: I hate the cold and there’s always a problem with accidents on icy roads — a real trouble when you are driving to work.
W: I know. Remember when Pete went off the road last winter and ended up with a broken arm? Despite all that, I love cold winter weather.

M: Sally, I got an email about your class visit to the car factory on November 4th. The email included the factory’s address, but it didn’t mention how much we need to pay. Don’t worry. I’ll find out.
W: OK. I’m surprised we’re visiting a factory. I mean, our teacher loves the museum — that’s where we usually go for trips. A factory visit is unusual, but this term’s topic is cars.
M: It’ll be fun seeing the latest models!
W: Well, maybe for some people. I’m just excited to see the car from that action movie we watched.
M: Oh yeah, the one that raced against the train!
W: Exactly!

M: Hi, Sally. So you’re back from New York. How was your trip?
W: Good. The conference was successful. And I met some really interesting people there. But I’d go crazy if I lived there.
M: Why’s that?
W: Well, people there are always in a hurry. Everybody’s always running and running. No time to stop and think. Do you know what I mean?
M: Yes, of course. So what will you do if they offer you a job there? It’s quite possible. Our company is looking for new people to work there all the time.
W: Well, if it is only for a year or two, I might say yes. It would be good for my promotion.
M: But only for a short time?
W: Yes. If they want me for longer, I won’t accept it.

M: Alice, you showed your designs in the London Fashion Show. How did you feel about that?
W: I was so lucky to get the chance. I never expected to be invited, but a famous designer asked me to join his team and show a couple of my designs. I hope it’ll give me more opportunities in the future as he mentioned my name in his speech.
M: What do you like most about your work?
W: I know many models and photographers who do a great job, but I’m quite shy so nothing makes me happier than sitting at my work desk putting my ideas on paper. I’m often away looking for new materials, especially in Asia, and when I am traveling, I miss working at home.
M: Would you like to try anything new?
W: Apart from designing, I’m interested in the production process, which can be done with a 3D printer. I’m exploring more possibilities of this as it reduces waste and uses recycled materials, which is important nowadays.

Mirco Della Vecchia, born in 1980, is an Italian cook and artist. Since he was thirteen years old, Vecchia has known how to make delicious dishes from chocolate, and he has won many prizes for his cool ice creams and chocolate cakes. Today, he has cafes all over the world, which are popular for coffee and the thirty different tastes of homemade ice cream you can buy. His smooth, creamy ice cream is made from fresh milk, cocoa from Venezuela, Colombian coffee, and nuts from Italy. No one knows how Vecchia makes it. That’s a secret! In 2011, Vecchia organized the World Chocolate Exhibition. He visited many famous sites around the world and carefully built a small model of each place he visited in white chocolate. White chocolate is extremely difficult to work with. The sugar, cocoa butter, and milk solids must be exactly the right temperature. Despite this, in July 2012, Vecchia successfully made the largest chocolate structure in the world! It is about four meters tall! Amazing!
