Four years ago,Rebecca Mayhew lost her job;then the pigs on the farm she owned with
her husband Stuart were troubled by health problems due to the way they were intensively
高一英语试题·第3页(共10页)
farmed. The couple became uneasy about the animals and the health of their farm land,so
they sold their pigs and took a holiday in Scotland, where Rebecca fell in love with a friend's
Jersey cows.
Four years on,their crop and pig farm is very different. The Mayhews have embraced
regenerative farming,a way of working that aims to fix the food production system by
improving soils and reducing and finally stopping using fertilisers (and pesticides.
They began with a small herd of Jersey cows on their south Norfolk farm.Unlike a
traditional milk farm, where young cows are taken away from their mothers after a few hours
and fed man-made food, they chose to produce milk naturally, allowing young cows to feed
from their mothers."Looking into what's good for the cows, and what's good for us,led us
into looking at what's good for the land",says Rebecca.
The Mayhews have stopped the farming method of the past half-century.Decades of
endless expanding is changing:big fields are turned into smaller field-trees replanted to
protect the soil and provide shelter and food for the cows.Fields that would normally be
sown with only rye-grass are now seeded with up to 20 species to provide healthier food for
the cows.Fields are also planted with nitrogen-fixing (plants to produce a free
fertiliser and soil-improver.
"Modern conventional farming is a constant war with nature. It's about killing
everything so one plant can grow",says Mayhew,"We need to learn from nature and work
with it.”
24.Why did Mayhew and her husband Stuart sell their pigs?
A.They worried about the farm.
B.They were out of work.
C.They longed to take a holiday.
D.They hoped to raise Jersey cows.
25.What is the goal of regenerative farming?
A.To use more fertilisers.
B.To rebuild healthy farmland.
C.To increase chemicals
D.To get rid of harmful insects.
26.How are Jersey cows different from those raised on a traditional milk farm?
A.The way of feeding.
B.The length of time.
C.The size of the animals.
D.The location of the farm.
27.What is Mayhew's attitude towards modern conventional farming?
A.Favorable
B.Disapproval
C.Indifferent
D.Unclear
Stories of shapeshifting creatures have existed for thousands of years. From ancient
myths to modern technology, shapeshifting has always been a significant theme in human
imagination. But is changing from one form to another really possible?
Shapeshifting, often linked to magic and witchcraft(),is a common theme in
myths and fairy tales. The Native American Navajo people tell tales of "skinwalkers,"
高一英语试题·第4页(共10页)
witches who can turn into animals with mind control and super-speed.Similarly,gods like
Zeus and Loki in mythology could change shapes to gain power or hide. These stories likely
began as explanations for mysteries like strange crimes or physical features, helping people
understand those who seemed "possessed"or"out of control."
Modern technology has brought a new aspect to shapeshifting. With Artificial
Intelligence (AD),we can now digitally transform our faces to look like someone else's,
enabling us to pretend to be a celebrity,a politician,or even your teacher. This"deepfake",
while quite new, raises important questions about identity and trust online. If you see
something online that you are unsure about, talk to a trusted adult.
Biologically, animals control their body changes using hormones-chemicals that
carry instructions to each part of the body.Humans also undergo hormonal changes as part
of growing up and aging, but full-body transformation would require much more advanced
technology.Scientists are exploring regenerative medicine inspired by nature, like how
starfish regrow limbs, which might one day help humans regenerate injured limbs and even
change physical features such as eye color.
While changing from one species to another is not possible, the idea of transformation
is a powerful one.We grow,we change,and we learn.The concept of shapeshifting,
whether in myth or technology, reflects our inborn desire to understand and control the
changes we undergo in life
28.What do people usually think of shapeshifting
A.It is used to control minds.
B.It's a history-recording method.
C.It is used to explain mysteries
D.It's a theme linked to technology.
29.What does"deepfake"underlined in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.A hormone to control body changes.
B.A game to pretend to be a politician.
C.A technology to change faces digitally.D.An ability to make photos look better.
30.What possible change will technology make to the human body?
A.Changing species.
B.Stopping aging fully.
C.Becoming unseen.
D.Regrowing lost limbs.
31.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Science behind transformation.
B.Human exploration of shapeshifting.
C.The harm of artificial intelligence.
D.The history of fairy tales and myths.

Given that you can't even grab hold of it,the idea of harvesting fog might seem far-
fetched. However,it's already happening in parts of the world, and researchers have now
suggested that harvesting fog on a larger scale could be an effective way of supplying water
to places that really need it.
高一英语试题·第5页(共10页)
Fog,which is just a cloud that has formed close to the Earth's surface,is made up of
tiny water droplets. It is harvested by hanging wire mesh (between poles. When the
fog passes through the mesh, droplets form. The water trickles down to a collection pipe
and into storage tanks.
To find out more about the potential of fog harvesting, researchers carried out a study
in Alto Hospicio,a city in the Atacama Desert,Chile. There's very little rainfall there, and
not many people have easy access to water. However, fog regularly forms in the mountains
around Alto Hospicio-and the researchers thought they could use it.
For the study, researchers measured how much fog they collected. They then combined
the data with other information, including weather forecasts,to work out how much fog
harvesting Alto Hospicio would need to meet its water demands.
They calculated that 17,000 square metres of mesh would provide the 300,000 litres of
water that is delivered to the city's poorest areas each week. They also estimated that
another 110 square metres would be enough to water the city's green spaces.
The researchers say that, for fog harvesting to work well, there needs to be a way of
storing and distributing large amounts of water. They hope their work will inspire other
people to explore fog harvesting as a way of supplying water to areas with similar
conditions to Alto Hospicio.
32.Why do researchers suggest harvesting fog?
A.It can reduce poverty.
B.It can relieve water shortage.
C.It can help distant areas.
D.It can improve work efficiency.
33.What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?
A.The elements of the cloud.
B.The use of storage tanks.
C.The importance of the water.
D.The method of fog harvesting.
34.Why did the researchers conduct a study in Alto Hospicio?
A.To make more accurate weather predictions.
B.To decide the means of water transportation.
C.To explore the possibilities of fog harvesting.
D.To learn about the water demands in the area.
35.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A.Promoting fog harvesting in proper regions.
B.Developing new rainwater collection methods.
C.Upgrading water supply systems in urban areas.
D.Conducting more studies on weather forecasting

Qi Baishi, one of the pioneers of modern Chinese art, remains my favourite painter. Born in Xiangtan, Hunan in 1864, he worked as a carpenter in his early years before starting to learn painting at the age of 27. Specializing in Chinese ink painting, he is world-famous for his vivid shrimp paintings, which blend realistic details with abstract charm.
Through his works, Qi showed deep love for nature and simple life. Even today, his art continues to inspire people, making him a timeless legend in Chinese painting.
