二、Teaching Content
The reading passage Mother of Ten Thousand Babies in Unit 2 Morals and Virtues belongs to the thematic cluster Individuals Making Outstanding Contributions to Society under the big theme Man and Society. The text introduces the life story of Lin Qiaozhi, the founder of China’s obstetrics and gynecology field. Through multi-dimensional text analysis, this lesson guides students to sort out Lin Qiaozhi’s important life choices and dig out her valuable virtues behind these decisions. Meanwhile, it helps students learn from her spirit and form rational, positive values when facing personal life choices.
3、 Students Analysis
1. Language foundation: Students have mastered basic daily vocabulary, but struggle with abstract adjectives such as generous and responsible. They can understand simple sentences independently, yet complex long sentences rely on teachers’ detailed explanations.
2. Learning style: Most students are visual learners who absorb knowledge better with pictures and short videos; they enjoy cooperative group work to share ideas. A small number of quiet students lack confidence and need more teacher encouragement to speak up.
3. Reading ability: Students have basic skimming and scanning skills, but cannot logically sort out the chronological structure of biographies. 4.Background cognition: Students only know the name Lin Qiaozhi and have limited knowledge of her deeds, which arouses their curiosity. However, they tend to feel her experience distant from daily life. 5.Differentiated levels: Students have obvious gaps in English proficiency. Top students expect in-depth text exploration, while underachievers need basic vocabulary and sentence support.

Show a crossroad picture on screen and raise two questions:
Q1: What important life choices do teenagers face?
S1: Choosing between two high schools.
S2: Picking different majors.
S3: Deciding future careers.
Q2: How can we make regret-free life choices?
S1: We need firm determination to stick to our goals.

Activity 2: Guess three outstanding Chinese women
Describe three figures for students to guess:

B. She built free public high schools for girls in mountain villages. (Zhang Guimei)
C. She devoted her whole life to saving women and newborn babies in China. (Lin Qiaozhi)
T: Do you know much about Lin Qiaozhi?
Ss: We only know her name.
Activity 3: Watch a short documentary video about Lin Qiaozhi.
Visual pictures activate students’ thinking about life choices, naturally lead in the lesson theme and core character. Guessing great women and watching short videos stimulate students’ curiosity and lay background knowledge for the text.
Step2 Prediction
Ask students to predict the main content based on the title and pictures:
Fill in the blanks: The passage may introduce a female ______ who delivered thousands of ______.
Key: doctor; babies
Train students to predict text content with titles and illustrations, forming basic pre-reading reading strategies.
Step3 Fast-reading: Skimming & Scanning
Activity 1: Skimming (Silent reading)
Students read the whole text silently and answer three questions:
Q1: What genre is this passage?
A: A biography.
Q2: What writing order does the writer use?
A: Time order.
Q3: Divide the text into three parts and match main ideas:
Part 1 (Para.1): Lin Qiaozhi’s lifelong guiding principle.
Part 2 (Para.2–5): Lin Qiaozhi’s important life choices.
Part 3 (Para.6): Lin Qiaozhi’s lifelong achievements.
Activity 2: Scanning — Sort out the timeline
Students scan the text and find key events of Lin Qiaozhi by time:

At age 5: Her mother passed away.
At age 18: She made up her mind to study medicine.
8 years later: She graduated from Peking Union Medical College.
1939: She went to the US for further study.
1941: She became the first Chinese female director of PUMC.
1954: She was elected as a government official.

Guide students to conclude: respect from people, meaningful life, great social achievements.
Activity 2: Group discussion (4 students a group)
Topic: Among Lin Qiaozhi’s virtues, which one can guide your own life choices?
Offer sentence frames for reference:
I think being determined matters most to me. Sometimes I easily give up my plans because others doubt me. If I stick to what I love, I will move closer to my dreams.
Invite several groups to share their opinions in front of the class.
Build a bridge between the character’s spirit and students’ real life. Provide standardized language frames to support underachievers to express ideas, realize value education and achieve the teaching difficulty breakthrough.
六、Homework (Two optional differentiated tasks)
Students choose ONE task according to their own English proficiency:

A school magazine will launch a special column The Greatest Chinese Heroines. Write a recommendation essay for Dr. Lin Qiaozhi, covering the following points:
Her representative life choices and outstanding personal qualities;
The inspiration she brings to contemporary teenagers;

七、Teaching Reflection
1. Teaching Highlights
This lesson combines picture resources, documentary videos and group cooperative discussion. While training students’ reading skills and language competence, it carries out profound moral education. Students develop sincere admiration for medical workers, build a strong sense of social responsibility and mission. The lesson fully realizes the value-oriented educational function of senior high school English subject under the new curriculum standard.
2. Existing Deficiencies & Improvement Plans
(1) Insufficient group discussion time
Due to limited class time, some groups could not exchange ideas fully, and quiet students failed to express their thoughts completely.
Improvement: Assign fixed discussion roles (leader, speaker, note-taker) in advance; properly shorten the time of detailed reading low-level question tasks to reserve more time for open discussion.
(2) Single type of teaching resources
The lesson only uses pictures, texts and short videos. Richer multimedia resources are not fully utilized.
Improvement: Add audio interviews, animated short clips and real picture materials of Lin Qiaozhi’s medical work to enrich classroom presentation and further stimulate students’ learning interest.
(3) Insufficient layered teaching design
The whole class shares the same reading tasks without targeted exercises for top students and underachievers.
Improvement: Design differentiated worksheets: basic worksheets for underachievers ; extended worksheets for top students (critical thinking questions about life choices).
