第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
One Possible Version:
Standing beside the hospital bed, I held his old rough hands tightly with eyes full of tears. He looked much weaker than before, yet a gentle smile still appeared on his face when he saw me. “Don’t worry,” he said softly, “we still have time.” His words struck my heart deeply. I could not help apologizing again and again for breaking my promise. He shook his head slowly, telling me that what mattered was not the trip itself but my growth and happiness. At that moment, I realized how much love and patience he had given me all these years.
After calming down, I packed my bag quietly and decided to head for the ancient town alone to keep our long-awaited promise. Walking along the narrow streets, I imagined him walking beside me, telling old stories as he used to. I took photos of the mountains, the river and the old houses, hoping to share everything with him. When I returned to the hospital, I showed him the pictures and described the journey in detail. Tears filled his eyes, but this time, they were mixed with joy. I finally understood that keeping a promise is not only about action, but also about love and responsibility.

Confucius, a famous teacher, was a politician and philosopher who lived in the Spring and Autumn Period in China. During his lifetime, he planted the seeds of the transformation by teaching thousands of people. Therefore, he is thought to be one of the world's greatest teachers today.
Confucius grew up in a poor family. As he grew up, Confucius worked to help his mother earn money. When he wasn’t working, he would read. His favorite thing to do was learn. His mother saw this and did her best to help him learn. One day, rich families noticed how smart he was and offered him jobs of counting their money and keeping track of their crops.
Confucius did these until he was 30 years old, but he always wanted to do more. He didn't like the way rulers treated their subjects. He wanted to find a way to help people who were less fortunate than he was. Later, he founded the philosophy “Confucianism”. Confucianism states that by educating yourself, loving your family, and respecting tradition you could become a better person. Confucius believed a person could achieve these things by practicing self-discipline. In the majority of his life, Confucius traveled and taught the people of China about self-discipline and the importance of education. He even opened China’s first school to teach both the poor and the wealthy as equals. Today, Confucius is celebrated all over the world for his philosophy of education, equality, and peace over money, and injustice.

B. The core ideas and great influence of Confucius.
C. The difficulties Confucius met when travelling.
D. The jobs Confucius took in rich families.

Ants have the ability to smell cancerous cells in humans, a new study has discovered, suggesting they could be used for cancer diagnosis in future. Researchers from the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) discovered that ant species Formica fusca has a well-developed sense of smell. It was able to differentiate (区分) cancerous cells from healthy cells in humans, thanks to their sense of smell, limited trials revealed.
To conduct their research, the scientists performed tests with 36 ants, smelling cells under a laboratory setting. First, the specialists exposed the ants to the smell of a sample of cancerous human cells. This smell was then associated with a reward of sugar solution. In a second step, the researchers exposed the ants to two different smells. One was a new smell and the second was the smell of the cancerous cells. Once this test was successful, the researchers exposed the ants to different cancerous cells.
As such, the scientists found that ants discriminate between cancerous and healthy cells and between two cancerous lines. After training, Formica fusca ants are able to detect volatile organic compounds given off by cancerous cells. This first study shows that ants have high potential, are capable of learning very quickly, at lower cost, and are efficient, CNRS points out in a news release.
This isn’t the first time that scientists have used the animal sense of smell to locate cancerous cells. “Dogs’ noses are well suited for medical diagnosis. However, training them to do so requires several months to a year. Ants therefore represent a fast, efficient, inexpensive, and highly discriminant detection tool for detection of cancer cell volatiles,” the team explained, “our approach could potentially be adapted to a range of other complex smell detection tasks including the detection of narcotics, explosives, spoiled food, or other diseases.”
But more clinical tests must be carried out before they could be used in clinical settings like hospitals, the team said. They suggest that in future, ants could turn out to be better than dogs when it comes to locating cancerous cells in humans. Who knows? Let’s wait and see.
28. How does the author introduce the topic of ants’ potential use in cancer diagnosis?
A. By comparing ants to dogs. B. By presenting the results of a new study.
C. By describing the training process of ants. D. By discussing the history of cancer diagnosis.
29. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The process of the research. B. The reason of the research.
C. The limitation of the research. D. The conclusion of the research.
30. What can we infer about the use of ants in cancer diagnosis?
A. Ants have already been used in clinical settings.
B. Training ants to detect cancer takes more than one year.
C. Ants may become a cost-effective diagnostic tool.
D. Ants will replace dogs in cancer detection entirely.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the use of ants in cancer diagnosis?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Indifferent.
D
The variety of bacteria(细菌) in our guts(肠道) has been used as a measure of overall health for years now. But recent studies suggest that what makes the guts of centenarians (people who live to be 100 or older) different is not the variety of bacteria species living there, but the balanced spread of those species.
A 2023 study looked at the guts of over 1,500 people, including 297 centenarians. Dr Shuai Wang at China’s Guangxi Academy of Sciences says that while this study’s findings support the idea that centenarians have special gut bacteria linked to their long life, it showed that rather than variety, their good health was better reflected by balance.
In fact, says Wang, “in many diseases, the variety of gut bacteria can be greater in sick patients than healthy people. This increase often happens due to a loss of gut barrier(屏障) resistance, allowing rare bacteria or bacteria that usually live elsewhere to settle there.” In older adults, he says, “A weaker gut barrier can cause a sudden increase of rare gut bacteria, which may lead to more types of bacteria, but not necessarily bring any extra health benefits.” The key to improving a weak gut barrier is fibre. Eating a high-fibre diet with plenty of vegetables keeps those barriers strong, and so does avoiding alcohol.
Dr Mary Ni Lochlainn is another expert who thinks that bacterial variety isn’t everything. She ran a experiment providing older twins with prebiotic(益生元) fibre and found that “they all had a decrease in variety, because the prebiotic was causing certain bacteria to grow,” she says. “But they also all had improved cognition(认知), so it shows me the limitation of variety.”
While variety may not be the most important thing for gut health, it can still play a positive role in later life. A 2016 study into weakness and the gut by Lochlainn’s colleagues at King’s found a link between weakness and lower bacterial variety.
32. What is the key to centenarians’ good health according to Dr Shuai Wang?
A. A high-fibre diet with vegetables. B. A wide variety of gut bacteria.
C. The strong function of gut barriers. D. A balanced spread of gut bacteria.
33. Why do some sick patients have higher gut bacterial variety?
A. They take some vitamin pills. B. They eat more fibre-rich food.
C. Their gut barrier becomes weaker. D. Their illness leads to more bacteria.
34. What can be inferred from the experiment led by Dr Mary Ni Lochlainn?
A. Higher bacterial variety can improve cognition.
B. Lower bacterial variety may not harm cognition.
C. Prebiotic fibre can promote people’s physical health.
D. Prebiotic fibre increases the total number of bacteria.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Secret of Long Life: Regular Exercise.
B. Prebiotic Fibre: The Way to a Healthy Gut.
C. Weakening Gut Barrier: Survival of Rare Bacteria.
D. Balance Over Variety: A New View on Gut Health.

Since childhood, my grandfather has been the person who cared about me most. He used to take me to climb mountains, fly kites and tell me interesting old stories in his spare time. He once made a serious promise with me that he would take me to visit the famous ancient town located in the remote mountain area when I entered senior high school.
I had been looking forward to this trip all the time and kept this promise firmly in my heart. However, after stepping into high school, endless homework and various training courses occupied almost all my daily time. I became busier and busier, and gradually put the original agreement behind unconsciously. I even had fewer chances to sit down and chat with my grandfather patiently.
Every time he mentioned the trip gently, I always found various excuses to put it off again and again. I thought there would be plenty of time in the future, so I did not cherish the precious time staying with him. As my academic pressure became heavier, I paid less and less attention to his physical condition and inner feelings.
Until one cold evening, I received a phone call from my mother, telling me that my grandfather fell ill suddenly and had to stay in hospital for treatment. Hearing the bad news, my heart sank instantly, and endless regret began to sweep over my whole mind. I realized that I had broken the most precious promise I had ever made.
I rushed to the hospital as fast as I could, not knowing how to face the weak old man lying on the bed.
