More grandparents are getting on social media to see their grandchildren, but online habits differ greatly by age. In the UK, over-55s are fast becoming the second largest group on a popular social media platform.
Sheila, a 59-year-old grandmother, tells why she started to use a social media app: “I can’t wait to see what my grandsons are doing, as my daughter shares videos and photos of them. It is a much better way to keep in touch than waiting for letters to arrive by post.” For Sheila, the digital world has also helped her reconnect with old school friends she had not heard from for forty years.
Interestingly, Sheila’s grandchildren are far less active on the same app. Data shows that children under 17 are leaving the site, with only 2.2 million users in this age group. However, these young people are never far from their phones. Chloe, aged 15, sleeps with her phone beside her, looking at it again and again before falling asleep and as soon as she wakes up. Unlike their grandparents, teenagers today spend so much time on their phones that they miss out on real-life time with their friends.
Teenagers may have their parents to thank for their pattern, since those parents were among the first to own smartphones. Peter, 38, recalls being glued to his own screens not long ago. “I was always checking emails, always feeling I was still at work. How could I tell my kids to get off their phones if I couldn’t do it myself?” He has since made a change: on evenings and weekends, he moves his SIM card into a basic phone that only makes calls and sends texts. “I am now more present with my children,” he says.

Hanfu, the traditional clothing of China’s Han ethnic group, has a history of nearly 4,000 years. In recent years, it has regained popularity both at home and abroad. More than just clothing, hanfu brings people together from different parts of the world.
Rachel Yu from Boston first came across hanfu by chance while browsing art videos online. Her serious interest, however, grew after she married her Chinese husband, who gifted her a set of hanfu. She began to study diverse hanfu styles from different dynasties, asking herself: Which dynasty does this style come from? How should it be styled? “It’s just like going down the internet rabbit hole and never coming back out,” she said.
Learning about hanfu was challenging for Rachel, as there was little information available in English. To overcome this, she chose to learn Chinese and shared her learning journey on social media, where she gained over 53,000 followers. Though she does not consider herself a teacher, she believes wearing hanfu in America shows a positive side of Chinese culture. She has joined a local hanfu club and even wore hanfu at her wedding, believing the tradition helps build friendships and smooths relations between countries.
Hanfu clubs are also booming across the US. Ming Liang, president of a hanfu corporation in New York, runs a network of more than a dozen clubs. During the pandemic (疫情), her club organized an online gathering that attracted hundreds of participants from eight countries on five continents. As a registered nonprofit with about 300 active members, the club holds regular activities on important traditional festivals, using hanfu as a way to honor cultural heritage.
To Rachel and Ming, hanfu is far more than a hobby. It allows them to express cultural identity, celebrate festivals, and share the beauty of Chinese tradition with the world. As these enthusiasts believe, better understanding between countries often begins with culture.
8. What does the underlined phrase “the internet rabbit hole” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. A pleasing website of rabbits.
B. An attractive endless online journey.
C. An unknown online hanfu game.
D. A technical problem in video-watching.
9. What does Rachel care most according to paragraph 3?
A. Showing Chinese traditional values. B. Speaking fluent Chinese.
C. Building cross-cultural understanding. D. Joining local hanfu communities.
10. Why did the author mention Ming Liang?
A. To highlight Liang’s success story. B. To show hanfu’s business value.
C. To explain hanfu club management. D. To stress hanfu’s growing influence.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Two women fall in love with traditional Chinese hanfu.
B. Various hanfu clubs have been set up across the USA.
C. Hanfu unites people worldwide through shared tradition.
D. More foreigners should wear hanfu at home and on the job.

A new study warns that artificial intelligence (AI) systems tend to give overly agreeable responses, which could negatively affect how people handle interpersonal problems and social conflicts (矛盾).
To investigate this, researchers evaluated 11 large language models (LLMs), including ChatGPT and Gemini. They presented the models with thousands of harmful actions, such as illegal or dishonest behavior, and 2,000 requests based on real online posts where the original writer was generally considered wrong. The results were striking. On average, the AI models agreed with the user 49% more often than humans did. Even more worrying, the LLMs supported harmful or bad and improper behavior 47% of the time. This suggests that AI tools do not stay fair and objective. Instead, they tend to agree with users, even if users hold wrong opinions.
The team then had over 2,400 people chat with both overly agreeable and normal AI models. Participants considered the agreeable responses as more reliable, which strengthened their own views and made them more likely to use that AI again. Interestingly, they thought of both types as equally objective, suggesting they could not see when an AI was being too agreeable.
Why does this happen? One reason is that LLMs rarely say “you are right” directly. Instead, they use objective academic language to indirectly support the user. For example, when a user asked if lying to his girlfriend about being unemployed for two years was wrong, the AI replied that his actions, while unusual, seemed to come from a genuine desire to understand the relationship beyond money.
The researchers worry that increased reliance on AI for personal advice could harm people’s moral growth and narrow their perspectives. Lead author Myra Cheng warned, “AI makes it really easy to avoid disagreements with other people, but such disagreements can be productive for creating healthy relationships.” In effect, AI tells people what they want to hear, not what they need to hear. If this continues, people may gradually lose the skills needed to deal with difficult social situations.
12. What do the data in paragraph 2 reveal?
A. Human judgments are often stricter.
B. Most LLMs support illegal actions.
C. AI tends to side with users unfairly.
D. Nearly half of LLMs prefer online posts.
13. Why does the author find the result “interesting”?
A. People failed to tell LLMs apart.
B. People were objective in the chat with AI.
C. People trusted AI models blindly.
D. People seldom chatted with agreeable AI.
14. What is discussed in paragraph 4?
A. The major findings. B. The research method.
C. The long-term effects. D. The underlying reasons.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce the functions of AI.
B. To explain the development of AI.
C. To warn against the risks of AI advice.
D. To show the conflicts created by AI.

C 13. A 14. D 15. C

根据第二段中的“On average, the AI models agreed with the user 49% more often than humans did. Even more worrying, the LLMs supported harmful or bad and improper behavior 47% of the time. This suggests that AI tools do not stay fair and objective. Instead, they tend to agree with users, even if users hold wrong opinions.(平均而言,人工智能模型认同用户的概率比人类高出49%。更令人担忧的是,大语言模型有47%的概率支持有害、恶劣且不当的行为。这表明人工智能工具无法保持公平客观,反而即便用户持有错误观点,也倾向于认同用户)”可知,相关数据揭示了人工智能往往会不公平地站在用户一边。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Interestingly, they thought of both types as equally objective, suggesting they could not see when an AI was being too agreeable.(有趣的是,他们认为这两种类型同样客观,这表明他们无法分辨人工智能何时表现得过于迎合顺从。)”

Lead author Myra Cheng warned, “AI makes it really easy to avoid disagreements with other people, but such disagreements can be productive for creating healthy relationships.” In effect, AI tells people what they want to hear, not what they need to hear. If this continues, people may gradually lose the skills needed to deal with difficult social situations.(研究人员担忧,人们愈发依赖人工智能获取个人建议,这可能会阻碍自身道德素养的培养,还会局限个人视野。

Financial literacy (理财能力) isn’t about memorizing professional expressions — it’s about building habits to control your money as you grow. The demand for this education is real — 68% of teens say they would sign up for a financial literacy course if available. ____16____. The following guide covers practical concepts (概念) you should know.
Budgeting is simply tracking your income and costs to keep your money from disappearing faster than you expect. By mapping out where your money goes, from food with friends to a new hoodie, and recording it in a spreadsheet or budgeting app, you gain a whole-picture view. ____17____. You don’t need to be perfect; you just need to be aware.
____18____. Start with a clear, achievable target, like $200 for concert tickets or $2,000 for long travels, then break it down into weekly or monthly amounts. Make it a habit by setting up automatic transfers or putting cash somewhere you won’t touch. ____19____ . Best of all, saving teaches patience.
Credit is simply borrowed money, and using it wisely while paying it back on time builds a strong credit score, but missed payments or too much borrowing can cause your credit score to drop. Since your score affects major life moves, keeping a healthy score is important. Another key piece is interest, the cost of borrowing money. And you should know that the better your credit score, the lower interest you will pay. ____20____.
Money shapes major life choices. With early access and abundant resources both online and offline, building financial confidence has never been easier.

________ will be built in the moon’s South Pole region是关系词引导的非限制性定语从句,修饰前面的先行词the International Lunar Research Station,先行词是事物名词且所填关系词在该从句中作主语,要用关系代词which。
46. Trolls / use / several false names / so that they can stay on a site.
分析句子结构可知,Trolls作主语;use作谓语;several false names作宾语;so that they can stay on a site为so that引导的目的状语从句。
47. She / immediately / became / the first woman / ever to be hired as a resident physician.
句中She作主语,immediately作状语,became作系动词,the first woman作表语,ever to be hired as a resident physician是不定式短语作后置定语,修饰名词woman。
48. No matter how different they may seem, / the spirit of sharing joy, gratitude, love, or peace / is / common / in all festivals.
“No matter how different they may seem”为no matter how引导的让步状语从句;“the spirit of sharing joy, gratitude, love, or peace”作主语;“is”是系动词;“common”作表语;“in all festivals”作状语。
49. Seeing pictures of our planet as an island in a black sea / made / people / realise that our planet’s resources are limited.
分析句子结构可知,“Seeing pictures of our planet as an island in a black sea”为动名词短语作主语;“made”为谓语动词;“people”为宾语;“realise that our planet’s resources are limited”为省略to的动词不定式短语作宾语补足语(此处为固定用法 make sb. do sth.“使某人做某事”,do sth.
50. This year’s Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine / has been awarded / to Tu Youyou, / whose research led to the discovery of artemisinin, / a crucial new treatment for malaria.
本句中,“This year’s Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine”作主语;“has been awarded”为被动语态,作谓语;“to Tu Youyou”为介词短语作状语;“whose research led to the discovery of artemisinin”是由whose引导的非限制性定语从句,修饰先行词Tu Youyou;“a crucial new treatment for malaria”是名词短语,作artemisinin的同位语,对其进行补充说明。

52. ________ (earn) a living, some opened up shops and restaurants in Chinatown. Many others found jobs on farms, joined the gold rush, or went to build the railway.
To earn

53. Finally, in the 20th century, the southern part of Ireland broke away from the UK, ______ resulted in the full name we have today: the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
【答案】which

54. About a month ago, I found myself carried out to sea by a strong wind towards night, and the next morning I ___________ (spot) by a ship.
【答案】was spotted
55. It is indeed an honor for China’s ______ (science) research and Chinese medicine to be spread around the world.

_____________________________________________________________
Her heart, however, was elsewhere. She was more interested in tending patients, publishing medical research on care for women and children, and training the next generation of doctors.
更感兴趣”使用固定短语be more interested in,“照顾病人”使用动词短语tend patients,“发表妇幼护理相关医学研究”使用动词短语publish medical research on care for women and children,“培养新一代医生”使用动词短语train the next generation of doctors,三个动词短语并列作介词in的宾语,使用动名词形式,使用and连接,句子描述过去发生的事情,使用一般过去时。
(construction; gold rush period; residential; turn into)(汉译英)
_____________________________________________________________
Historically, Chinese immigrants settled in the area during the railroad construction and gold rush period. What started as a residential area for Chinese immigrants then turned into a centre for Chinese culture.
时,“从历史上看”置于句首作状语,译为Historically,用逗号将其与后面内容隔开;“华人移民在铁路修建和淘金热时期定居到这片区域”是简单句,陈述过去的事情用一般过去时,“华人移民”译为Chinese immigrants,“定居到这片区域”译为settled in the area,“在铁路修建和淘金热时期”放在句末作时间状语,译为during the railroad construction and gold rush period,该句整合为“Historically, Chinese immigrants settled in the area during the railroad construction and gold rush period.”。 的地方”,符合语境,且在该从句中作主语,“起初只是作为”译为started as,“华人移民的居住区”译为a residential area for Chinese immigrants,即What started as a residential area for Chinese immigrants;“后来”译为then,“发展成了”译为turned into,“中华文化中心”译为a centre for Chinese culture,该句整合为“What started as a residential area for Chinese immigrants then turned into a centre for Chinese culture.”。

Dear Chris,
I understand your concern upon reading a handful of one-sided online comments. However, my own Mid-Autumn experience tells a far more vivid story.
Take last Mid-Autumn Festival for instance. Rather than simply eating out and shopping, my family gathered on our balcony decorated with lanterns. We arranged mooncakes and fresh fruits like star fruit as offerings to the full moon, a centuries-old custom in Guangdong. As we enjoyed the sweet mooncakes and snacks, my grandmother told the legend of Chang’e. What impressed me most was making paper lanterns with my younger cousins, a hands-on tradition that truly bonds us. Such vivid rituals, far from being lost, still carry our deepest wishes for reunion.
I’d like to invite you to the Dragon Boat Festival. We can watch the races and wrap zongzi together. You’ll find it truly unforgettable!
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Chris,
I totally understand your concern that festivals seem reduced to dining and shopping. Yet our folk traditions are still vibrantly alive.
Every Mid-Autumn Festival, my family follows traditions handed down for generations. A table in the yard is covered with mooncakes, fresh fruits, and delicious snacks. With lanterns lit, we honour the moon and gaze up at its silver glow. Grandma tells the tale of Chang’e as we listen, spellbound. Sweet flowers scent the air, and laughter fills the yard. Far from fading, these customs go far beyond a meal, strengthening bonds and keeping our heritage alive.
I sincerely invite you to join us for the Dragon Boat Festival. We can watch exciting boat races and make zongzi. I really hope you can experience the beauty of our living culture.
Yours,
Li Hua
