Use Your Notes to Study
Concentrate on the left-hand column and summary at the bottom. These contain the most important
points you will need for your assignment or exam.
Cover the right side of the page(the note-taking column)with your hand or another sheet of paper.
Quiz yourself by giving answers to the potential questions that you included in the left column. Then
uncover the right side and check your comprehension.
Reviewing frequently over a longer period of time, rather than cramming before a test, will greatly
increase your memory and deepen your understanding of course material. With your effective notes made
using the Cornell system, you will be able to study efficiently and with minimal stress.

We were sailing on a white boat through the clear waters of Turks and Caicos. The view was so
beautiful that even my teenage daughter,Kavya, paused her usual rudeness to admire the scenery and
breathe in the salty air.
Instead of relaxing by the pools,we had spent the previous day training for our big scuba trip.We
took a course with written tests and did two exhausting pool practices. Now,the moment had arrived.
Our instructor was about to place the helmets on our heads.I took a deep breath. This was it-my
chance to connect with Kavya through a new experience, something we could finally share.
But suddenly,Kavya pulled my arm.Her face showed the same worried look she had during math
homework.I could sense her emotions tightening under her diving suit.Just as the instructor approached,
she whispered,"Dad,can I quit?The waves sounded louder,the gear heavier.Surprisingly,I didn't say
what I normally would:"Quitting is not an option!"I even stopped myself from thinking,"But this was
my plan."Trying to give her a gentle hug in the heavy gear only resulted in me splashing water all over
高一英语试题第4页共13页
her and making us both laugh awkwardly.
When she was little, connecting with Kavya was effortless.I knew everything about her,and she
always joined my adventures with pure excitement. But as she grew older, she discovered her own
interests,drifting away from mine.What followed were sighs,eye-rolls,and half-hearted "I guess so"
replies.I had hoped this scuba course would bring us closer again.I didn't expect her quitting to hit me
so hard or so suddenly.
Even without the dive,we enjoyed our vacation. We swam, collected seashells, and played word
games. In those slow, quiet moments,I realized joy isn't only in big adventures. It wasn't the moment of
closeness I had imagined-but it turned out to be exactly the one we needed.

Today, with the help of AI tools, anyone can instantly generate impressive architectural images.Yet
this raises a serious question for architects:if technology lowers the technical barrier, what remains the
true value of design? The answer, many experts believe, lies in deeper philosophical (thinking.
Architecture is not only about structure. It also reflects how humans understand life. This
understanding begins with the individual-how a building can shape people's emotions. It then extends
to the community-whether a neighborhood design brings people together or drives them apart.
Ultimately,it touches upon time itself-how to balance the preservation of historical identity with the
need for change. In many cities, preserving every old structure,no matter its function or relevance, has
become something of a sacred cow, admired by all but discussed by few.Yet true architectural
philosophy requires us to ask whether preserving everything always serves the community's best interest.
高一英语试题第5页共13页
AI can copy thousands of design styles, but it cannot make value judgments. It does not know why,
for instance,a library in Colombia places its reading rooms-not offices-in the brightest and highest
spaces:a design choice symbolizing equality. As scholar Nayef Al-Rodhan points out,"good design
should possess valuable qualities, including fairness, inclusion, and safety, which cannot be outsourced to
AL”
In the future, the best architects may not be those who master AI tools, but those who master
philosophical reflection.Saudi Arabia's planned city "The Line"is one such example. Its design is not
only technological but also philosophical-it asks whether humans can create a sustainable city that
allows people to live in harmony with nature.By turning a traditional city into a single vertical (
line,it challenges our deepest assumptions about urban life.
Freed from repetitive drafting work, architects in the age of AI must think more deeply about
humanity, community, and sustainability. The great designs of the future will emerge where technology
meets philosophy, not where one replaces the other.
33.What is the main function of paragraph 2 in the passage?
A.To introduce examples of modern cities.
B.To compare architecture with philosophy
C.To describe how AI will change construction.
D.To present architecture from a philosophical view.
34.What can we learn from the example of the library in Colombia?
A.Great design is human-centered
B.AI will reshape public buildings
C.The best design feels almost invisible.
D.Equality is the core of modern design
35.Which of the following best describes the nature of "The Line"?
A.A philosophy-guided theory.
B.An eco-friendly city design.
C.A social-welfare housing plan.
D.An economically-driven project.
36.According to the passage, what should architects do in the age of AI?
A.Shift from drawing to building
B.Employ AI as a powerful co-pilot.
C.Bring soul and meaning to designs.
D.Prioritize philosophy over function.

When we think about animals storing food, the image that usually comes to mind is a squirrel busily
hiding nuts for the winter. We don't usually think of a small songbird taking down enormous prey
)like worms, tearing it into pieces, and hiding it in the branches of trees to snack on later. But this is
also a form of food-storing behavior.
The accurate spatial memory is therefore crucial for retrieving these hidden food items, and
it has long been assumed that spatial memory is under strong selection pressure in food-storing species.
For selection to act on a feature, there must be individual variation that is passed onto the young and that
influences survival and reproduction. While previous research only studied how spatial memory affects
winter survival, new research aimed to fill this gap.
Researchers measured the spatial memory performance of 63 wild toutouwai (a small songbird)
during winter. They gave the birds a round puzzle that had a mealworm treat hidden inside one of eight
compartments ()For each bird, they put the puzzle at the same location in their territory multiple
times in a single day, with the food always hidden at the same spot.Over time, the toutouwai learned the
location of the hidden treat and began opening fewer compartments to find the mealworm. The
researchers then followed these same birds through the next breeding (season and looked at whether
their spatial memory performance-measured as the number of compartments opened to find the
mealworm-was related to their ability to feed chicks, and whether it influenced the survival of their
chicks.
The researchers found that males with more accurate memory performance successfully raised more
chicks per nest and provided larger prey for their young.By contrast, they didn't find the same patterns
for females. This is the first evidence that spatial memory is linked to reproductive fitness in a food-
storing species.
The mystery remains:why does spatial memory appear less important for female fitness? One
possibility is that long-term spatial memory for specific locations(rather than the short-term memory
they measured)may matter more for female reproduction because females do all of the nest building and
incubation.
37.What can replace the word"retrieving"underlined in paragraph 2?
A.Feeding on.
B.Looking after.
C.Handing out.
D.Taking back.
38.What was the new research mainly about concerning spatial memory?
A.Its role in winter survival.
B.Its difference between genders.
C.Its effect on reproductive success.
D.Its formation process in the brain.
39.Why was the mealworm always placed in the same compartment?
A.To train the birds to adapt to a new feeder.
B.To guarantee equal access to food for all birds.
高一英语试题第7页共13页
C.To facilitate observing the birds'speed of eating.
D.To test the birds'recall of a stable food location.
40.Which of the following agrees with the findings of the research?
A.The food-storing birds are smarter than squirrels.
B.The spatial memory performance is sex-specific
C.Female toutouwai contributed more to raising the young.
D.Male chicks got better spatial memory from their breeder.

In today's digital world,we often give our thinking to algorithms ()influencers,and public
opinion.We consume endless opinions,yet rarely ask:What do I actually think?41 It's the ability
to let information in without letting it control your conclusion. Here's how to reclaim your own mind.
Notice when you're outsourcing your opinions to your social circle. As social creatures,we often
unconsciously align (....our thoughts with those of people around us.That's natural, but problems
arise when you can no longer distinguish their thoughts from your own.42 As with changing any
behavior in life,it all starts with awareness. So next time you're about to voice an opinion, pause and ask:
Is this really what I think?
43 Nowadays,we tend to be addicted to immediate resolution. But developing intellectual
)independence requires us to accept uncertainty. Some thoughts need a bit of time to develop, and
complex issues deserve more than instant reactions.Give yourself time to think before forming
conclusions.
Stop treating opinions like identity markers.Today, people often treat their opinions as core parts
of their identity, which makes changing their minds feel like self-destruction.But when opinions become
identity, intellectual independence becomes an identity crisis. We can't explore ideas freely because
we're busy protecting our sense of self.So separate your current thought (I currently think this)from
your core self(I'm this kind of person).44
Practice expressing your thoughts to yourself first. You may think out loud on social media,
testing half-formed thoughts in comments sections and letting the crowd shape your views.45 But
when you express a thought only to yourself, without an audience or social consequences, you're not
performing or seeking approval. You're finally hearing your own voice.
A.Learn to say,"I changed my mind."
B.This takes time but makes you much more confident.
C.Sit with discomfort instead of reaching for instant answers.
D.Your current views are just where you stand today, not who you are.
高一英语试题第8页共13页
E.In doing so,you just discover what gets the best response, not who you are.
F.Becoming intellectually independent doesn't mean rejecting all external input
G.For example, you may adopt a friend's views even when they don't feel right.

I'm delighted to learn that you're considering joining a club this term.Among the three choices,I would strongly
recommend the Technology Club.
To begin with, the Technology Club offers opportunities for you to explore programming, robotics, and even 3D
printing through hands-on projects. Moreover, the club regularly invites guest speakers from local universities, which
will surely broaden your horizons and deepen your insights into China's rapid technological development. Most
importantly, you will team up with like-minded peers and even get the chance to participate in regional science
competitions,making your experience truly rewarding.
To apply, simply fill in the online application form on the school website and submit it to the club office by next
Friday.I hope my recommendation helps, and looking forward to seeing you in the club!
Yours,
LiHua
