Emile and the Field is the story of a little boy who spends every season playing in a field by his house,
whispering to the trees and collecting leaves.Usually it's just Emile and his little black dog,and that's the way
he likes it.In winter, though,Emile has to share his field when other kids come sledding ()and it
annoys him.But then his dad helps him understand that nature is for sharing."If we share,Emile's father said,
who usually had an answer, and learn to take care,it means the field will be here forever,"wrote Young.
Young originally wrote Emile and the Field years ago as a bedtime poem for his son,but this poem about
Emile lives on,now as a children's book illustrated by Chioma Ebinama.
"I make sure that all of the images are vibrant,"Ebinama said.To reflect Emile's love of nature, she used
bright colors like pinks, blues, and sunny yellows to create warm and beautiful pictures. She wanted each page to feel
like a piece of fine art,so she hand-painted the illustrations in watercolor.
Ebinama even drew her dog,Luna, into the story as the scruffy (little dog that follows Emile
around. She got Luna as a gift right when she was starting to illustrate this book.Even though there was no dog
in Young's original poem,Luna came in very handy."If we include this dog, then you know that the character
on the page is Emile right away,"Ebinama explained.
"Obviously there is a kind of family quality to the book for me,"said Young. He named the main character
of his poem after his great-grandfather,Emile,a farmer who lived to be 103 years old.The story also drew
inspiration from Young, who ran around his family's fields as a kid in Louisiana.
24.What is the main focus of the story Emile and the Field?
A.A boy's adventure in the city.
B.A boy's connection with nature.
C.A boy's trip in the cold winter.

Saltwater is typically harmful to most plants. As sea levels rise, crops in coastal regions are at great risk,so
scientists are racing to find solutions to this problem.
One strategy is to look for ways to engineer plants to tolerate()saltwater.To this end,Adam Roddy,
a plant biologist at New York University, seeks to better understand what enables mangroves-among the few plants
that can live in saltwater-to grow so well in that environment.
Researchers usually group mangroves based on their physiological qualities rather than genetic ties-there
are about 80 species of mangroves covering nearly 20 plant families, and many mangroves have developed special
abilities to block or pump salt out of their systems. However,Roddy and his team wondered if other qualities, such as
the size and shape of cells()that make up the leaves'outer layer, called the epidermal pavement cells, might
contribute to mangroves'ability to tolerate salty waters as well.
To test this hypothesis(),the researchers observed the leaves of 34 mangrove species and 33 of their inland
relatives under the microscope. They measured cell size, cell wall thickness, and other features. Then, they
analyzed whether any of these characteristics were different between mangroves and their relatives that live
farther from the coast.
The team discovered that compared with the cells of their inland relatives, mangroves'epidermal pavement
cells were significantly smaller and had thicker cell walls, supporting the researchers'hypothesis. However,
there was no difference in the size of the stomata (small openings in leaves),meaning mangroves rely more on
their cells'strength than on gas exchange to survive.
Roddy said,"Our study shows that only a few simple cell features are key to surviving extreme conditions.
These results point to a promising strategy for engineering other salt-tolerant plants in the face of rising sea levels:
by changing the size of cells and the structure of their walls."
28.What does Roddy's research want to explore?
A.The effects of saltwater on plant cells.
B.Why mangroves can survive in saltwater.
C.The deadly results of rising sea levels.
D.How salty water affects trees on the coast.
29.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The value of the study.
B.Notable qualities of mangroves.
C.The process of the study.
D.Newfound species of mangroves.
30.How do mangroves'epidermal pavement cells differ from those of their inland relatives?
A.They are less dependent on cells'strength.
B.They tend to grow better in hot conditions.
C.They are smaller and have thicker cell walls.
D.They are weaker than those of inland plants.
31.What can we infer from Roddy's words?
A.These results are far from satisfactory.
B.The study provides a complex method.
C.Engineering salt-tolerant plants is risky.
D.The finding suggests a practical approach.

The semantic Web does not sound fun and easy to use,but it could make surfing Web 3.0 a more rewarding
and interactive experience. Some believe it could even lead to a new form of artificial intelligence (AD).
In simple terms, the semantic Web is that things on the Internet will be described with descriptor languages
so that computers can "understand"what they are.For example,a car part or a person could be marked with a
special label. If everything on the Web was marked like this, computers could create a huge network of connected
data. With their high-speed processing power, computers could suggest unexpected and useful connections that
the human mind could never come up with, making this a step toward Al.
A group of German researchers has created an experimental kiosk (that lets you experience the
semantic Web-even if you have no idea how it works. All you need is a phone and a finger to touch the screen.
This kiosk uses music files as an example of how the semantic Web works.Music files have ID3 tags that
provide information about the song, like the artist. When you place your phone on the kiosk,it recognizes the
music file and shows you a list of songs by artist or title. You can also use "spotlets",which can perform actions
with these objects. For example, you can drag a music file to a spotlet to play it.
These are just simple examples.Much more can be done with the system. The German team will soon set up
a website version, where you can interact with the system using voice commands. They believe this system could
be used in busy places like airports or train stations, making it easier to interact with content.
The semantic Web isn't meant to replace the current Web,but to enhance()it.When fully developed,
it could make using the Internet more enjoyable and interactive.
32.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2?
A.Explain an idea.
B.Support an opinion.
C.Make a suggestion.
D.Draw a comparison.
33.What will the German team do about the system according to the text?
A.Create a mobile app version.
B.Develop it for online shopping.
C.Replace other search engines.
D.Search for its new possibilities.
34.What is the author's attitude towards the semantic Web?
A.Tolerant.
B.Positive.
C.Doubtful.
D.Negative.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Understanding the Semantic Web
B.A First Step Towards the Age of AI
C.Discovering an Applicable Web 3.0
D.The Highs and Lows of the Internet

Last Saturday afternoon, the sun was shining brightly as Leo and his three best friends,Sam,Mia and Joe,
headed to their usual spot in Riverside Park for a football match. The grass field by the old tree was their
kingdom.Laughter filled the air as they ran and passed the ball.Leo was chasing a long pass from Sam,his eyes
fixed on the ball, when his foot suddenly caught on something hard.He tripped and fell face-first onto the grass.
"Ouch!"Leo cried. He looked back to see what had tripped him a half-buried,torn plastic bottle.Angry,he
was about to throw it away but stopped and looked around carefully. For the first time,he saw it:the field was
littered with plastic bags, food wrappers, and thrown-away bottles here and there. The cheerful atmosphere of
the game disappeared right away.
His friends hurried over."Are you OK,Leo?"Sam asked,reaching out a hand.Leo stood up,brushing dirt
and grass from his body."I'm OK,"he said, his voice no longer cheerful."But look at the field.Rubbish is
everywhere. We play here all the time. How did we not notice?"The others looked around and got concerned.
Then Leo had an idea.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
"What if we played a different match before continuing the football match?"Leo suggested.
Soon,the park looked completely different.

(Text 1)
M:What clothes did you buy?
W:Well, the blue dress was too expensive. The shoes I liked were too small. So I just got a new pair of jeans.
(Text 2)
M:Are you still planning on going running tonight? The weather is really nice.
W:I know. But I've had a headache after lunch,so I've decided to stay at home tonight and rest.
(Text 3)
W:You're such a good dancer!Do you take dancing lessons?
M:Thank you. No,I'm not taking any lessons. It's just my hobby and I've been dancing ever since I was a kid.
(Text 4)
M:What a busy year!I've read four books, which is only half of the year before.
W:Well, that's not too bad.I finished six,so one book every two months.
(Text 5)
W:Michael,do you know where New York is?That's my home state.
M:Yes,Mrs.Smith.It is on the east coast of the United States. My dad has a company there.
W:Good. We will do a geography test here in the classroom tomorrow.
(Text 6)
W:We had an interesting day at school,Dad.The teacher told us about the American author Helen Keller. She was both deaf and
blind since she was a baby.
M:How did she manage to become an author?
W:She had a great teacher who taught her to read by spelling out words on her hand.Helen even went to school like her brothers and
earned a degree.
(Text 7)
W:Class, for the test tomorrow, what's the longest river in the world?
M:The Nile.It flows north from Sudan.
W:Good,Johnny. Now,what are the next two longest?
M:The Amazon and the Yangtze.
W:And where is the Amazon River located? You can look this up on the Internet or in a book.
M:It starts in Peru, then goes east across South America and flows into the Atlantic Ocean in Brazil.
W:So the"headwaters"are in Peru, but the "mouth"of the river is in Brazil.Isn't that strange how we describe rivers?
(Text 8)
W:Excuse me,Mr.Black.I almost forgot there is a phone message here for you.Professor Green called and asked you to call him back.

W:How is your project going?I've heard good reports.
M:We are having problems, but at least we're not spending too much money.
W:When must the building be done?
M:In two months. The company wants to move into their new office building three months after.
W:I heard that a Chinese firm finished a hospital in Africa in less than a month.
M:I heard that story too.But I can't find good workers.When somebody quits,or is sick,it's hard to find people with skills.I can't
just put up a sign or an ad in the newspaper.
W:How do you find workers?
M:Mostly through the Internet. You get fast results that way,but you still have to interview people and find out if anyone can do the
job.It takes time, and it takes me away from my work.
(Text 10)
M:Good evening. Before we start our concert today,I want to talk about the man who wrote the music.Mozart was good at music
from a young age. Before the age of five,he played the piano and the violin, and at five,he began to create his own music. He
even performed in front of kings and queens of Europe. He became famous for his music, but he remained poor and disappointed.
He made good money, but he was tired of trying to prove his worth, and his wife spent more than he made.Still,he wrote more
than 600 works, even though he died at 35.I know you are excited to hear his music, and we have a wonderful musician who will
play for you.He also began learning music at a young age.By the time he was 11,he was playing in concert halls. And he still
has the power of youth.

football on a field like this.Let's clean our kingdom up first!"He pointed at the rubbish."Let's make it a quick challenge.Fifteen
minutes. We each take a section.Whoever collects the most pieces wins!"The others agreed, and they got to work. For the next

They could run as fast as they wanted, with no rubbish to trip them up.Their laughter returned, louder and brighter, echoing in a
space they had made better with their own hands. That day, everyone was a winner of a new kingdom built not by one person but by
a team.
