Unit 1 Knowing me, knowing you (人物交际) 阅读理解 [2023·新高考全国Ⅰ卷] D On March 7, 1907, the English statistician Francis Galton published a paper which illustrated what has come to be known as the“wisdom of crowds” effect. The experiment of estimation he conducted showed that in some cases, the average of a large number of independent estimates could be quite accurate. This effect capitalizes on the fact that when people make errors, those errors aren't always the same. Some people will tend to overestimate, and some to underestimate. When enough of these errors are averaged together, they cancel each other out, resulting in a more accurate estimate. If people are similar and tend to make the same errors, then their errors won't cancel each other out. In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people's estimates be independent. If, for whatever reasons, people's errors become correlated or dependent, the accuracy of the estimate goes down. But a new study led by Joaquin Navajas offered an interesting twist(转折) on this classic phenomenon. The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of independent individuals. For instance, the average obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five was significantly more accurate than the average obtained from 20 independent individuals. In a follow-up study with 100 university students, the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion. Did they tend to go with those most confident about their estimates? Did they follow those least willing to change their minds? This happened some of the time, but it wasn't the dominant response. Most frequently, the groups reported that they“shared arguments and reasoned together.”Somehow, these arguments and reasoning resulted in a global reduction in error. Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain, the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous. ( )32.What is Paragraph 2 of the text mainly about? A.The methods of estimation. B.The underlying logic of the effect. C.The causes of people's errors. D.The design of Galton's experiment. ( )33.Navajas' study found that the average accuracy could increase even if .  A.the crowds were relatively small B.there were occasional underestimates C.individuals did not communicate D.estimates were not fully independent ( )34.What did the follow-up study focus on? A.The size of the groups. B.The dominant members. C.The discussion process. D.The individual estimates. ( )35.What is the author's attitude towards Navajas' studies? A.Unclear. B.Dismissive. C.Doubtful. D.Approving. 根据第二段内容“This effect capitalizes on the fact that when people make errors, those errors aren't always the same…the accuracy of the estimate goes down.” 根据第三段“The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of independent individuals.” 根据文章第四段“In a follow-up study with 100 university students, the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion. Did they tend to go with those most confident about their estimates? Did they follow those least willing to change their minds?” 根据最后一段“Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain, the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous.” [2018·全国卷II] D We've all been there:in a lift,in line at the bank or on an airplane, surrounded by people who are, like us,deeply focused on their smartphones or,worse, struggling with the uncomfortable silence. What's the problem? It's possible that we all have compromised conversational intelligence. It's more likely that none of us start a conversation because it's awkward and challenging, or we think it's annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it's an invaluable social practice that results in big benefits. Dismissing small talk as unimportant is easy, but we can't forget that deep relationships wouldn't even exist if it weren't for casual conversation. Small talk is the grease (润滑剂) for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.” In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction(互动) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience.“It's not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband,” says Dunn.“But interactions with peripheral(边缘的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also.” Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense of belonging, a bond with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk.“Small talk is the basis of good manners,” he says. 32.What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph? A.Addiction to smartphones. B.Inappropriate behaviours in public places. C.Absence of communication between strangers. D.Impatience with slow service. 33.What is important for successful small talk according to Carducci? A.Showing good manners. B.Relating to other people. C.Focusing on a topic. D.Making business deals. 34.What does the coffee-shop study suggest about small talk? A.It improves family relationships. B.It raises people's confidence. C.It matters as much as a formal talk. D.It makes people feel good. 35.What is the best title for the text? A.Conversation counts B.Ways of making small talk C.Benefits of small talk D.Uncomfortable silence 【要点综述】 本文是一篇说明文。 结合第一段的“We've all been there…the uncomfortable silence.” 结合第三段的最后一句话“‘The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.’” 结合第四段的“The results showed…for our well-being also.” 结合第二段的最后一句话“…it's an invaluable social practice that results in big benefits.”和第三段的“Small talk is the grease(润滑剂) for social communication…”以及最后一段的“‘Small talk is the basis of good manners’…” 七选五 [2025·浙江1月考] One of the most common mistakes in communication is trying to do too much. 36. There􀆳s no value in delivering any kind of communication, whether written, spoken, formal, or informal, if the message doesn􀆳t come across clearly. Being clear and brief—while maintaining interest and including everything your listeners need to know—is a high-level communication skill.   Here are some tips worth following in order to communicate more effectively. ·Keep your audience in mind. Your audience will naturally be more interested and engaged when you tailor your communications to their interests. 37. This will engage their desire to understand and interact with the information.  ·Don􀆳t use ten words when one will do. Even the most engaged and committed audience will eventually get bored. Keeping your message simple and clear will make it easier for people to understand.38. However, they􀆳re hearing it for the first time. Keep it simple.  ·39.     If you􀆳ve ever worked as an instructor, manager, trainer or coach, you􀆳ll know that there are few better ways to learn new information than to teach it. Ask the audience to contribute their ideas or to take a role in explaining new concepts and policies to others. Allow them to lead discussions and meetings to develop their communication skills. ·Consider the best method to deliver your message. If the information you􀆳re communicating isn􀆳t urgent, consider sending an e-mail. Written communication will give your audience more time to review it, think it over, and follow up with questions. 40.     Building effective communication skills takes time, but the effects are worth the effort. A.Be patient. B.Get the audience involved. C.The best messages are often simple. D.Speak directly to what matters to them. E.You may be surprised by what your listeners offer. F.It will also give them a handy record to refer back to. G.As the speaker, you already know what you􀆳re going to say. 36.C 根据上文 “One of the most common mistakes in communication is trying to do too much” 可知,文章开篇即指出“沟通中常见的错误是试图做太多”,下文 “There's no value... if the message doesn't come across clearly. Being clear and brief... is a high-level communication skill” 则强调了“清晰”和“简洁”的价值。 37.D 根据上文 “Your audience will naturally be more interested and engaged when you tailor your communications to their interests” 可知,此处提出 “根据听众兴趣调整沟通内容能提升其参与度” 的观点,下文 “ This will engage their desire to understand and interact with the information” 说明该做法能 “激发听众理解和互动信息的意愿”,this指代空格处的内容,说明空格处需具体说明 “如何根据听众兴趣调整内容”。 38.G 根据上文 “Keeping your message simple and clear will make it easier for people to understand” 可知,此处强调 “信息简洁清晰易理解”,下文则以 “However, they’re hearing it for the first time. Keep it simple” 转折,提醒需考虑听众的信息接收状态。G 选项(作为演讲者,你早已了然自己要说的内容。)中 “you already know what you􀆳re going to say” 与下文 “they􀆳re hearing it for the first time” 形成转折对比,解释了 “为何需要反复强调简洁”—— 说话者因熟悉内容易忽略冗余,而听众因陌生需更简洁的表达。故选G。 39.B 根据下文 “Ask the audience to contribute their ideas or to take a role in explaining new concepts and policies to others. Allow them to lead discussions and meetings to develop their communication skills” 可知,本段围绕 “让听众参与沟通” 展开,具体列举了听众分享想法、参与解释、主导讨论等做法。 40.F 根据上文 “Written communication will give your audience more time to review it, think it over, and follow up with questions” 可知,此处介绍书面沟通 “方便听众查看、思考、提问” 的优势,空格处需补充其额外价值。 中a handy record to refer back to是书面沟通的独特优势,also表明与前文优势的并列关系,进一步凸显书面沟通的实用性,故选F。 [2022·浙江6月考] I have a drawer full of letters to Santa. Each year my children would write up their Christmas wish lists. They were polite requests for the latest game or toy. As the children got older, they would give Santa some hints(提示)on where to buy their presents. 31.       Those letters taught my children a valuable lesson about writing: it has a purpose. Sometimes our purpose is to achieve something; other times it may be to entertain, inform, or persuade. 32. And when writing doesn't seem to have any purpose or get any kind of meaningful response, then it can be hard to get excited about doing it.   Christmas is a great time of year for children to communicate with others through writing. When children write for real audiences and real purposes, they can learn to choose their words accordingly. 33. You write “Dear Santa” because you don't know him personally and you want to show him respect.   34. Texting, online messaging, live chats while playing video games all mean that they are constantly producing written messages. However, because they are usually writing to family and friends, they use informal language most of the time.   There is nothing wrong with this kind of writing. It suits the audience and the purpose and gets the job done. 35. This type of writing won't be rewarded by the school examiner, nor by a future employer or a potential client. The very best communicators are those who know how to adjust their language to match their audience.  A.It isn't that these young people can't write. B.But it is always purposeful—or at least it should be. C.The age of pen-and-paper letter writing may have passed. D.As a result, each year they received something they wanted. E.You write “Hi Nanna and Pop” because you are close to them. F.As technology develops, young people are writing more than they ever have. G.But if this is the only kind of writing young people do, it will cause problems. 31.D 结合上文“As the children got older, they would give Santa some hints(提示) on where to buy their presents.” 而D项“As a result, each year they received something they wanted.” 32.B 根据上文“…it has a purpose. Sometimes our purpose is to achieve something; other times it may be to entertain, inform, or persuade.”可知,写信都应该带有目的性,B项“But it is always purposeful—or at least it should be.” 33.E 根据上文“When children write for real audiences and real purposes, they can learn to choose their words accordingly.”和下文“You write ‘Dear Santa’ because you don't know him personally and you want to show him respect.” 此处E项“You write ‘Hi Nanna and Pop’ because you are close to them.” 可知,F项“As technology develops, young people are writing more than they ever have.” 35.G 根据上文“There is nothing wrong with this kind of writing. It suits the audience and the purpose and gets the job done.” G项“But if this is the only kind of writing young people do, it will cause problems.” [2021·全国乙卷] According to Jessica Hagy, author of How to Be Interesting, it's not difficult to make yourself interesting at a dinner party. 36. , if you're out of your comfort zone or if you're wandering into somebody's house for the first time. So the main thing is just to show up and be adventurous, trying different foods and talking to strangers.  People love to talk about themselves. If you can start the conversation with a question other than “What do you do for a living?”, you'll be able to get a lot more interesting conversation out of whomever it is you're talking to. 37. , it can bring in “I have this old, broken-down vehicle” or “I rode the bus with these crazy people who were laughing at silly jokes in the back.” It just opens up conversation.  38. ? If you can't take their wine away, you should certainly try to take away their soapbox (讲台).If you're the host, you can ask them to help you in the kitchen with something and just remove them from the situation.39. .  And what about that other dinner-party killer: awkward silence? If you're faced with an awkward silence at a dinner party, the only thing that always gets everyone talking again is to give the host a compliment (赞扬).40. . Just quickly turn around and say, “This cake is extremely delicious and you have to tell me all about it.”  So being interesting at a dinner party isn't that hard. A.How do you know the host B.The first step is to go exploring C.If you ask the question “How did you get here?” D.Be prepared to have awkward conversations with strangers E.Or turn the conversation into a topic where they have little to say F.What about that person who has had too much to drink or won't stop talking G.He or she is the person who is feeling the weight of that awkwardness the most 【文章大意】 本文是一篇说明文。 36.B 根据下文“So the main thing is just to show up and be adventurous, trying different foods and talking to strangers.” 再结合下文“I have this old, broken-down vehicle”和“I rode the bus…” 再结合“If you can't take their wine away, you should certainly try to take away their soapbox (讲台).” [2020·全国卷II] Emoji(表情符号) and workplace communication In Asia, messaging platforms are growing rapidly, with users in the hundreds of millions, both at work and play. 36. . It's been reported that 76 per cent of employees in some western countries are using emojis at work.  Written communications can often read as cold and dull. Using emojis can add humour and feeling, keeping intention clear. 37. , encouraging better and more frequent communication.  In any given office, employees can range from age 22 to 70 and beyond, and finding common ground in communication style can be a challenge. 38. . While the younger generations prefer to communicate visually, for those used to working with traditional tools like e-mail, it may feel like a learning curve(曲线). The good news is that it's simple to learn and can be worth the effort.  There is also the matter of tone(语气). Who hasn't received an e-mail so annoying that it ruined an entire day? 39. . Emoji can help communication feel friendlier, and even a serious note can be softened with an encouraging smile.  40. , and emoji can contribute directly to that positive outcome. And when your employees begin adding smiling emojis to their business communication, you'll know you have succeeded in improving your work culture.  A.Messages with emojis feel more conversational B.Even a formal e-mail can seem cold and unfriendly C.Sending smiling faces to colleagues may seem strange D.The popularity of these platforms is spreading globally E.Giving employees the tools enables them to communicate honestly F.Studies show that friendlier communication leads to a happier workplace G.An easy way to bring all work generations together is with a chat platform 【文章大意】 本文是一篇说明文。 36.D 由空前“In Asia, messaging platforms are growing rapidly, with users in the hundreds of millions, both at work and play.” 37.A 根据上一句 “Using emojis can add humour and feeling, keeping intention clear.” 38.G 根据上一句中提到的“…employees can range from age 22 to 70 and beyond…”和a challenge以及下一句中提到的“While the younger generations…” 39.B B选项中的“…a formal e-mail can seem cold and unfriendly”与空前句子中的an e-mail so annoying呼应,且unfriendly与空后句子中的friendlier形成对比。 40.F 根据下文“And when your employees begin adding smiling emojis to their business communication, you'll know you have succeeded in improving your work culture.” Talking with your doctor Talking freely with your doctor can make you feel better and gives your doctor the information she or he needs to give you the best care. The first time we 41 there, we heard the chug-chug-chug of a motorbike 42 its way down the hill towards us. It was a 43 called Mario, coming to 44 us a box containing some tomatoes and a bottle of wine. It was a very nice 45 for him to make. But when we looked at the tomatoes, we were 46 because they were so misshapen: not at all like the nice, round, 47 things you get in a supermarket. And the wine was cloudy, in a funny old bottle with no label(标签) on it. These can't be any 48 , we thought. But we were 49 his kindness, so we 50 them.  What we discovered is that it's 51 to judge what you eat only by its 52 . Those tomatoes had a 53 that reminded me of the ones my uncle used to grow when I was a child. Nowadays supermarket tomatoes 54 perfect but taste of water. Mario's wine may have been cloudy and come out of an old bottle, but it was 57 .  It's good to eat things at the correct time, when they're 58 , and as close as possible to where they were 59 . I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought. That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn􀆳t heard of the bus station. I thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car. Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue (队列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face.“We made it,” he said. Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out. At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: “Out of order. Sorry.” Paragraph 1: I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news.      Paragraph 2: Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. Possible version 1: I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. He looked at me in disbelief, asking me what to do. Flashing him another apologetic smile, I begged him for a delayed payment. “If I miss this last bus to Prague, I􀆳ll be late for the conference which is so important that I can􀆳t afford to miss it!” I explained. “May I have your phone number? I will call you and return the money I owe you. I promise I will keep my word or you keep my watch!” I added, handing him my watch as well as my business card. Gunter accepted my business card but rejected my watch. He wrote down his phone number and gave it to me. “Just keep your promise, sir.” A feeling of gratitude washed over me as I heard his words. Giving him a firm handshake, I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the bus, and jumped onto it just before its departure. Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. He picked me up at the bus station where he had dropped me off four days before. Beaming a warm smile at him, I gave him a big hug the moment I saw him. We chatted happily on the way to the airport. I told him that thanks to his generosity and timely help, everything had gone smoothly. When he stopped his taxi outside the airport, I paid him for the “double car rides”, back and forth from the airport to the bus station, together with a generous tip that he turned down. I also gave him an attractive souvenir I had bought at Prague, which he accepted with delight. We became good friends and kept in touch with each other regularly. I felt blessed to have such a warm-hearted friend like Gunter. Possible version 2: I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. I explained to him the urgency of catching the bus, emphasizing that otherwise I would be forced to sit overnight and buy a new ticket the next morning. Ultimately, I suggested, “I will return to Vienna in 4 days. If it􀆳s OK with you, I can pay you then, with an additional 10 euros as a gesture of my gratitude.” After an uncomfortable pause, he simply nodded, saying,“I agree to this arrangement and trust you.” I thanked him with the biggest smile and we exchanged contact information before I got on the bus. Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. We arranged to meet at the airport, and upon our arrival, we hugged each other like long-lost friends. When I gave him the extra 10 euros I had promised, he didn􀆳t accept. “Buy me a beer next time you are in Vienna,” he said with a warm smile. Then we parted ways with a firm handshake and a promise to keep in touch. Gunter􀆳s kindness had turned a potentially disastrous evening into a memorable story I would cherish for years to come.
