Professor Peng believes that the new coat can be used in many ways. For example, a driver or a bicycle rider can use it as a GPS map. Everybody enjoys acts of kindness. But why? Research shows that being kind can activate (激活) a part of the brain called Striatum (纹状体) and make us feel better. How does it happen?
First, being kind makes someone smile. If you see yourself smile, people around you may be smiling too. A kind act makes someone who is sad feel better. It can also make ourselves feel good. So why not start that chain of good feeling to people around?
Secondly, being kind starts a social connection with other people. Kind acts like buying someone a present make friendships stronger. Research shows that spending money on others may help you get a stronger feeling of happiness than spending it on yourself. In the same way, charities also help people to connect with someone on the other side of the world.
Thirdly, even middle school students know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind, he or she makes others in the group kind. Imagine that you make cakes for your friends and it makes others do it each month. Then you are eating cakes a lot more days than giving them away.
The story doesn’t end here. Being kind and being happy make a wonderful two-way relationship. Being kind may make you feel happier, and if you are happy, you can act much more kindly.
7. What can we learn about being kind according to Paragraph 3?
A. It can help build stronger social connections with others.
