Nan Rendong, known as the "father of China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST)", was born in 1945 in Jilin Province. FAST, also called the "China Sky Eye", is the world's largest single-aperture radio telescope, which has helped scientists make many important astronomical discoveries.
Nan studied radio engineering at Tsinghua University and later got a doctorate in astronomy. In 1993, he learned that the International Union of Radio Science planned to build a large radio telescope. He thought China should have its own, so he decided to lead the project.
