One Saturday Maria and I had a 30-mile bike ride. At 10:30 a.m., when we stopped for a rest, a cold wind came. That was when our perfect day began to change.
By noon, we knew a big storm was moving our way. Dark clouds rolled up out of the southwest. There was no way to stay out of the storm. We would have to wait it out, but where?
Then ________. The temperature fell suddenly. I looked up and saw the sky had now turned dark green. I looked around and saw no animals.
Then a blue car stopped beside our bikes. The driver shouted, “Get in!” She looked afraid, and so did we. We did as she said. That was when the hail (冰雹) started. Ice, the size of golf balls, hit the windows of the car.
She drove fast to the north. Maria and I looked back at the black sky. Maria cried, “Tornado!” It was so close. We would never run faster than the tornado! The driver said, “There’s an overpass (桥) ahead. We’ll stay under it for protection.”
When we parked, we jumped out of the car and ran to the wall of the overpass. Before I could count to 20, there came a loud noise. It sounded like a train passing overhead. Then, suddenly, it was over. We had made it!

One night when I was in the eighth grade in a school in Los Angeles, I saw something on the news. It was about a group of homeless people sleeping outside in the cold. They didn’t have a warm and comfortable place to stay. That really worried me.
So I decided to start a club. The goal was to raise money to help the homeless. I called it the Rock Club as I decided to make beautiful paintings on rocks and sell them. There were only five members when I first started the club. But the number quickly grew to twenty. It was unnecessary to ask people to join the club, because people came up to ask me if they could do anything to help.
We spent all of our free time painting animals, flowers and even the names of sports teams on the rocks. We went around the school to search for teachers and students and hoped they could buy our rocks. By New Year’s Day we had raised thirty-three dollars and then we decided to give the money to a homeless person. We were so happy that we could help the homeless by ourselves.
A few days later, our club’s story appeared in the newspaper. We all felt proud that we did something great and people began to pay more attention to the needs of the homeless in our town. Our school decided to start a program, just for kids to help the homeless.
Something, as simple as some rocks and paintings, made me know that we’re never too young to do good things and every little thing helps to make a big difference.
62. What made the writer start the Rock Club?
A. Seeing homeless people on the news. B. Wanting to show his painting talent.
C. His friends’ advice on starting a club. D. His teacher’s hope of helping others.
63. What does the underlined word “unnecessary” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. useless. B. not needed. C. impossible. D. important.
64. What happened after the club’s story appeared in the newspaper?
A. The club members got a lot of money from the newspaper.
B. The writer became very famous in the town.
C. People began to pay more attention to the homeless.
D. The writer stopped people from joining the club.
65. What can we learn from the text?
A. Only rich men can do something to help the homeless.
B. We are too young to make a difference.
C. Small actions can bring big changes.
D. It’s very difficult to raise money by selling painted rocks.
【答案】62. A 63. B 64. C 65. C

When the children arrived at the tunnel, they looked up and saw something strange. The trees on the hill were moving down the hill! It was a landslide.
The children knew the trees would fall on the railway line. If the train hit the trees, there would be a big accident. They had to stop the next train. The next train was arriving at 11:29, only five minutes away, and it was just 15 kilometers from them.
“We can run towards the train and wave to the driver,” Phyllis said.
“He won’t think there is anything wrong,” Roberta said. “We always wave to him.”
“We need something red to wave,” Peter said. “Red is for danger.”
“My skirt is red,” Phyllis said. “I’ll tear pieces off.”
Phyllis tore strips (条) from the bottom of her skirt.
“We need sticks to tie the strip to,” Peter said.
The children ran to a nearby tree. With his knife, Peter cut off three thin branches. He tied each of the strips of red skirt to one of the branches.
“Now we have red flags,” he said. “When we wave these, the engine driver will know something is wrong. He will stop the train and ask us what the matter is.”
The children ran through the tunnel and waited at the other side for the train to come. When the train arrived, the children waved their flags. Roberta was so excited that she fainted (晕). The engine driver saw the red flags and stopped the train at once. All the passengers cheered for the children.

第二节 阅读表达(共5题,每题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
Have you ever heard of Saihanba, a very big forest that lies in Chengde, Hebei? In Mongolian (蒙古语), its name means “beautiful highlands”. Just as the name means, across the area were endless forests, grasslands and clear lakes.
Saihanba used to be a royal hunting ground (皇家狩猎场) with warm and nice weather all year round. However, in 1863, to make enough money, the land was open to all people. In the following years, tree cutting and wildfires quickly destroyed the forests and grasslands. By the 1950s, Saihanba had poor land without animals or plants.
The plans for rebuilding a national forest in Saihanba started in the 1960s. A number of scientists travelled through Saihanba and studied there in 1961. When they reached Saihanba, they could hardly find any trees. They finally found one standing alone in the large land. It greatly encouraged them.
From then on, they asked the workers to keep working until they turned Saihanba into a new national forest. Although they met lots of difficulties planting trees, they solved them and the land has changed a lot since then. Today, Saihanba is famous as the “Emerald (绿宝石) of North China”. It is very important to Beijing’s water and air quality because it can make the environment better. It is also a natural protection that can prevent sandstorms. There are fewer sandstorms in Beijing over the years.
