In China, a group of people help old people by using a red card, known as the Pat Card (拍拍卡). The card, stuck to schoolbags or bags, carries the message, “If you need help, just pat me.”
Zhao Chen came up with this idea. Zhao’s story started in 2014. “When my daughter was born, my mum came to Xi’an to help, but she got lost. A student helped her find the way to the hospital,” Zhao said. “I was really touched by this nice act and decided to do something like this to help old people I don’t know.” Zhao even made the Pat Card to help old people.
Zhao kept his act of kindness secret until early 2024. In September 2024, when Zhao saw an old man walking slowly through a subway station in Xi’an, Zhao helped him get out of the station, called a taxi and sent him home. On the way, some strangers joined in — one food seller gave the man a cheap meal, and the driver gave him a free ride. This made Zhao see how powerful it is to work together. Then he asked people to help each other, and many volunteers got together to help old people!

A few weeks ago, our classmate Wu Ruijie told us a story. We all enjoyed the story and learned a lot from it. Here it is. One day, she talked to a Chinese friend on her mobile phone on the New York subway. A foreign woman stood beside her. She used a Chinese word quite a lot. Its pronunciation was like a rude English word. So the woman angrily glared (怒视,瞪着) at her.
Then our teacher Ms. Tang also shared an experience. It happened when she was in Australia. It was a sunny day. She walked on the street with an umbrella. She wanted to protect herself from the sunlight. A man behind her asked, “Is it raining?” In Australia, people don’t use umbrellas on sunny days.
We can see cultural differences between countries from the two stories. How should we deal with the differences? Here are some suggestions. First, respect everyone everywhere. Second, learn local culture before going there. Third, explain if we make mistakes. Finally, always be kind.

33. How did the man in Australia feel when he saw Ms. Tang taking an umbrella on sunny days?

B. Glare back at the woman angrily.
C. Stop talking at once and leave quietly.

Have you ever heard of stone rivers? Such rivers can be found in some parts of the world. Among them, the Big Stone River is a very amazing one.
The Big Stone River is the most interesting sight of Taganai Park in Russia. Different from other rivers, it is filled with thousands of rocks and stones. Not a drop of water can be seen. Interestingly, as one comes near to the rocky river, the sound of running water can be heard.
The Big Stone River is about 6 km long and is made up of many small rocky rivers. It cuts through a thick forest like a real river. It is about 200 meters wide and in some places, it is up to 700 meters wide. Some of the rocks weigh up to 10 tons each and the layer (层) of rocks goes down to 6 meters deep.
Scientists believe it is the consequence of the movement of glaciers (冰川) about 10,000 years ago. At that time, ice covered the top of the mountains, reaching up to 4,800 meters in length. As time went by, the ice melted (融化) and turned into water. The rocks fell down from the mountains slowly and became the river of rocks.
While seeing the amazing river is such a great experience, the best way to enjoy this natural wonder is from above. If you could visit Russia, it wouldn’t be a bad experience to go and see it. Come and you won’t regret it.
36. Why is the Big Stone River special?
A. Because it is near Taganai Park.
B. Because it is full of fish.
C. Because it is impossible to see water there.
D. Because the sound of running water is loud.
37. How does the writer describe the rocky river in Paragraph 3?
A. By giving examples. B. By comparing it with other rivers.
C. By listing numbers. D. By asking questions.
38. What does the underlined word “consequence” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Reason. B. Result. C. End. D. Beginning.
39. Why does the writer write the sentence “If you could visit Russia, it wouldn’t be a bad experience to go and see it.”?
A. To tell people not to go to Russia.
B. To advise people to visit the Big Stone River.
C. To show traveling in Russia is a bad experience.
D. To explain how the stone river came into being.
40. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Big Stone River B. A Very Amazing Stone
C. An Unforgettable Experience D. A Running River
【答案】36. C 37. C 38. B 39. B 40. A

根据第二段中“Different from other rivers, it is filled with thousands of rocks and stones. Not a drop of water can be seen.(与其他河流不同,它充满了成千上万的岩石和石头。看不到一滴水。)”可知,大石河的特殊之处在于那里看不到水。
【37题详解】
第三段中出现了“about 6 km long(约6公里长)”、“about 200 meters wide(约200米宽)”、“up to 10 tons(重达10吨)”等一系列具体数据。作者通过列举数字来描述石河的规模和特征。
【38题详解】
根据第四段单词所在句“Scientists believe it is the consequence of the movement of glaciers (冰川) about 10,000 years ago.(科学家认为它是10000年前冰川运动的……。)”,以及后文解释了冰川融化,岩石落下形成了石河。因此,石河是冰川运动带来的“结果”。Consequence意为“后果、结果”,与Result同义。
【39题详解】
文章最后一段提到“seeing the amazing river is such a great experience(看到这条神奇的河流是一次很棒的经历)”以及“Come and you won’t regret it(来了你不会后悔的)”。作者写这句话的目的是为了推荐和建议人们去参观大石河。
【40题详解】

He wanted to encourage volunteers to look after old people. So he started the “Mutual Help Parents” (互助父母) activity. Today, more than 48,000 volunteers around China are spreading kindness through the Pat Card.

A. Sad. B. Touching. C. Boring. D. Interesting.

A. He felt it was funny. B. He felt it was strange.
C. He felt it was boring. D. He felt it was embarrassing.

B. Glare back at the woman angrily.
C. Stop talking at once and leave quietly.
D. Keep talking and pay no attention to her.
35. What do the two stories want to tell us?
A. Talking manners on subway B. When to use umbrellas
C. Suggestions on Traveling D. Cultural differences
